Description
DId you know that Mauna Loa is a shield-forming volcano?
Kilauea crater
Appearance
This cinder cone volcano has an
elevation of 13,679 feet or 4,169 meters above sea level. Also known as “Long Mountain for its size, it is also the largest volcano in the world, this very large volcano is one of the most popular too. This volcano is about 600,000 to 1,000,000 years old; for a volcano, that is like being a teenager; it may seem old to us, but that is really quite young. The Yellowstone Caldera is over 16.5 million years old!
General Information This volcano, along with Hualalai, Mauna Kea, Kilauea and Haleakala (also known as East Maui Volcano) helped form Hawaii! After the volcano erupts, the lava hardens into igneous rock and soon creates new land. Mauna Loa is a cinder cone volcano. It is still active; who knows if it will erupt again?

How it was Formed
History Eruptions
It was said that Mauna Loa has erupted 39 times and that the first eruption was dated back in the year 1780. The most
Like all other volcanoes, Mauna Loa was formed by the earth’s tectonic plates. When the tectonic plates move and rub against each other and sometimes move apart from each other. Pushing against each other will make the land rise, into a volcano shape. But when the tectonic plates sink, below the earth’s surface is really hot and melts the rock into magma/ lava.
Did you know that by itself, Mauna Loa takes up to about 85% of all the Hawaiian islands combined!
recent eruption happened in 1984. When Mauna Loa erupts, the lava hardens into igneous rock that later turns into land.

LOCATION Big Island, Hawaii As you know, Mauna Loa is located at Big Island, Hawaii. Did you know that it actually helped Big Island take form? When the volcano erupts, the lava will harden into rock that will later turn into land. The elevation of Big Island is up to 4,205 meters high. Big Island is bigger than all the other islands combined. It is also the only island with an active volcano.
Pacific Ocean Did you know that Mauna Loa and five other volcanoes helped form Hawaii?
The Pacific Ocean is located between Asia/ Australia and America. The word “Pacific can also mean “peaceful. It is the biggest ocean in the world, which can cover up to 30% of our earth! Did you know that the Pacific Ocean is actually larger than all of the land on earth added up together!

Plants & Animals
Animals
To have a species living on Mauna Loa would be very rare because who lives at volcanoes? A khaoahe, misssialeoees, and peolrueddns are examples of animals that can live a Mauna Loa. An `Akiapola`au is a type of bird; an Hawaiian honeycreeper. It lives in forests of kipuka.
Plants
Another example of rare life on a volcano.
On Mauna Loa it is very hard to grow plants
because of the carbon dioxide but there are types of plants such as finger grass, ohia ichua, koa,
Spanish clover etc. that grow on Mauna Loa. Only
several plants can handle and survive above 10,000 ft. of elevation. In Mauna Loa you can see several
plants next to the trail walk, such as a several blades of grass, etc.
