Introduction Ever wondered what the International Space Station is? Well The ISS [International Space Station] is a big satellite that floats above the earth. Read on to find out more!

What is the ISS? The International Space Station is bigger than a three bedroom house and it is surprisingly larger than a football field! The structure of the ISS is several large cylinder sections called modules that were put together. The ISS is approximately 250 mile above our earth, and it goes from 52째 north to 52째 south. Sixteen different countries have been working together on the ISS. These include: Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the USA. The International Space Station has many different parts. One part is called the Zarya. In the early time when they were just starting the ISS, the Zarya housed everything. Now it is used for storage. The ISS is used for astronauts that come and go in ships for 6-12 months. That is a long time!

What They Do on the Station. Astronauts experiment, eat, sleep, exercise, collect data and have fun. With 2-2.5 hours of exercise there is much more to an astronaut’s schedule. Experiments fill most of their day. Astronauts do experiments to help humans down on earth understand more about space. Some experiments measure space conditions, weightlessness and more. Also they grow portioned crystals. From all these experiments and data collecting we might result more accurate clocks and better weather predictions and stronger metals. As you can see astronauts have a very busy day, wow!

International Space Station News The ISS is still up there today. Many things happen up there. About one or two weeks ago two Russians went out of the station. They were Commander Oleg Kotov and Flight Engineer Sergey Ryazanskiy. They took an 8-hour space walk. During their space walk they installed two cameras on the ISS. The cameras were for Canadian business so Canada could see what was going on, on the earth. More new is that on Sunday, January 12, 2014 NASA sent a supply vehicle to the station. It was named Cygnus. The Cygnus was pulled to the station by a robotic arm. Cygnus had experiments and many other items. Also on January 23 another rocket will launch to the station. Conclusion Soon the ISS will be the largest man made object in space, Wow! The ISS is a really cool place. By the way ever year the station passes by earth, at a height that we can see. Look up on the web to find out when. Hope you learned about the International Space Station!
