Slavery in the South

This is a picture of a southern colony slave working in the fields.

The majority of Africans in the southern colonies were enslaved. Enslaved Africans like the Yeomen came to the colonies as loyal servants, laborers, craftsmen and sailors. But, even though Africans were enslaved, they could still start their own cultures and religions so they had a bit of pride in their lives.

Enslaved Africans did back breaking work from day to night and they slept in small crowded cabins. But, the slaves made each other feel loved by bonding with each other. They did that by telling each other stories about their homeland and playing traditional music because after all, they did have life, hope and emotions. Enslaved Africans made instruments out of gourds and animal hair.

In 1622 and 1644 the tribe of natives named the POWHATANS (Poe- waa- tunz) fought for their land after the settlers came in because the settlers ate all their food and hunted all their food. Of course, the settlers had to plan counter-attack. William Berkeley, (The governor of Virginia) thought that the only way that they could get along is that is for them to separate. In 1646 William Berkeley set up the boundary line around the Native American’s territory that the settlers weren’t aloud to cross.

=Post Road

Path to South During the earlier times, the path from Virginia to Georgia was different. People can only travel south either by land or by water. If they decided to travel by land, they had to ride a horse or get carried by wagon and the roads were bumpy with holes and when it rained there would be streams of mud. When you traveled south by water, you had to board oceangoing ships or row river canoes. Luckily a post road was built from Maine to Georgia in the 1600s. Inns were often found at crossroads. They served as a meetinghouse, tavern, and post office; letters and newspaper were laid out until people collected them. Charleston was a city near the bay on a path to the South. Charleston was a big city, like the cities in the north. Charleston acted as a place that indigo and rice planters traded and also as a center of culture. Its population included Jews, Scot-Irish, and French Africans. Many tradespeople became quite rich working for Charleston’s richer planters. Most of those tradespeople were free Africans.

This was Charleston in the colonial times. 4

Geography and Agriculture The Southern coast was a watery world. There were many rivers, bays and swamps. The rivers on Southern coast were affected by the ocean tides, so it was called tidewater. The people who lived near the tidewater grew cash crops a lot. Cash crops were crops that were only for selling, and the settlers around tidewater grew more cash crops then a settler around

mountains. There were a lot of different cash crops. Tobacco was the first cash crops. Then, when they were using rice they new that the Africans used more rice and better at making it, so they went to Africa to learn the easier

way to make rice. It was very helpful. This is a picture of a town in Southern Colony. That was made after 4 years.
