Luxurious La Vue FLOATING RESTAURANT South Africa’s biggest floating restaurant and events venue is right here in Durban By Meredith Haywood

F

irst imaginings of this dinner boat cruise are that of a quaint European houseboat, much like those on the Seine in Paris, with cute little bistro tables and a rather tight fit whilst taking in all the views from the Seine. Or even something rather grand - like those from Manhattan Island or the iconic Washington dinner boat cruises – past all those monuments . Well, I almost guarantee that you’ve never seen or experienced anything like this, because there absolutely is no equivalent to this floating restaurant. The 85 foot luxury catamaran is absolutely massive, featuring two fully stocked, marble clad bars, a dance floor, as well as seating for up to 200 diners, split between the two wellplanned decks - with room to maneuver and enjoy the luxury. Their website will tell you that they are the only 5 star luxury floating restaurant and events venue in South Africa – and indeed they are - but what they don’t tell you is just how hard pressed one would be to find a similar experience anywhere else in the world! The owners have certainly outdone themselves with this endeavour. It is truly sensational!

Cruising 6 Days a week, La Vue offers a dinner cruise from Tuesday to Saturday which boards from 18:00-19:15 and sets sail at 19:30 for a 2 ½ hour cruise, returning at 22:00. A sunset cruise is also available on Sundays, boarding from 15:00 to 16:45 and setting sail at 17:00, returning at 19:30. Assisted boarding is always at hand for those of us with wobbly sea legs, whilst you will be seated promptly and guaranteed an exceptional view from wherever you are. During your cruise you will receive a choice of gourmet, fine dining options as part of your four course set menu, you will be treated like royalty, with Moët & Chandon readily available, and service to make even European restaurants quite bleak. Dine in sheer luxury while listening to the live band perform - music to all of your senses… The cruise leaves the harbour, showing off our rather sparkling coastline, with Durban in all her glory. The experience is cosmopolitan, and like none other – the stability that the catamaran offers will have you barely noticing you are on board a sea-faring vessel. Time will fly as you drink in the atmosphere of sumptuousness and beauty – with every sight being of absolute quality. From the endless views of the harbour and 5Durban

coastline, to the opulent interior and glistening tableware – no detail is amiss in this experience. It does evoke a sort of excitement, almost as if one simply must show this to EVERYONE! It makes your imagination run wild with flights of fancy over how absolutely grand a wedding would be on this boat! Or even a 21st Birthday Bash! Oh dear, well – my 21st is long gone – so I suppose I shall have to settle for salivating at the thought of a lavish wedding or perhaps even our next company party… either way I’d have some serious persuading to do! La-Vue is fast becoming a “must see” restaurant, and I’m pretty sure that in the coming months there simply will not be space available. My suggestion is to go get it while the getting’s good – they won’t be able to help most of us very soon - so book well in advance. Durbanites are indeed lucky folks to have this on their doorstep! Mayor James Nxumalo; “As a City we strive to be the tourism trendsetters and this new development bodes well for that. This comes at an opportune time as we approach the festive season, we will have an influx of tourists and this will be a fantastic offer to them as we host them in our City. La Vue is a major attraction for fine dining while experiencing the sights and sounds of Durban.” Head of Tourism Phillip Sithole has eagerly expressed that new product developments such as La Vue will positively impact on Durban’s offerings and the revitalization of the Durban Harbour precinct. The City is investing considerably in redefining Durban as the Smartest Port City in Africa and ensuring that Durban is the centre of Maritime Excellence. “Durban Tourism warmly welcomes La Vue to the Durban Harbour and we hope that this is just the beginning of the creation of new experiences and innovation for our Port City,” he said.

“The memories will stay with you long after the cruise has finished its journey.”

Owner, Nick Dranias; “La Vue will give Durban the opportunity to offer local residents, visitors and tourists, the unique and welcome alternative in fine dining and entertainment. The interest in La Vue has been overwhelmingly positive.” If you would like to book your very own special experience aboard the fabulous La Vue Floating Restaurant at just R595 per person (excluding drinks), please contact bookings@la-vue.co.za or info@la-vue.co.za. THE BEVERLY HILLS 50 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE The Beverly Hills was the first hotel of its kind in our country - the first new resort to be awarded five stars. It was the foundation of luxury tourism in South Africa - a statement of luxury and class, defining the uMhlanga coast as the place to be for the rich and influential. By Jeni Haywood

T

imelessly stylish and elegant, the hotel has been an icon for 50 years - the changes and additions merely aging the building with grace. Throughout the years the Beverly Hills hotel has been the classy, elegant and luxurious retreat for many – it has been a sanctuary and restful oasis, and a happy holiday spot for families. Built in 1964, the hotel was designed & built by Sol Kerzner himself, and was his very first endeavour into hoteleiring. The Hotel is an ode to beachfront architecture, with every single room featuring a sea view, yet the building itself is angled just so, so that all the spaces are light and bright and

8

cheerful. It truly is an astounding feat, and was certainly quite the genius design, inspiring many hotels in the area to “up their game”. 50 years on, the Beverly Hills Hotel stands proud, strong and iconic. On the 6th of November 2014, the timeless Beverly Hills Hotel celebrated it’s 50th birthday. It was a grand and glitzy event befitting the elegant stature and reputation of the hotel and its guests, all of whom have been a part of the amazing 50 year journey of the Beverly Hills Hotel. Guests at the event were treated to the world renowned food, wine & entertainment, in a typically impeccable event. 5Durban

The event was kicked off with a grand display of Moet et Chandon Champagne, and ended with a parade of handcrafted desserts clad with gold dust. The man who built the Beverly Hills five decades ago, launching his own prolific journey as a hospitality industry icon, was among the guests of honour – Sol Kerzner. Platinum-selling South African songbird Lira showcased her talents while guests were revelling in the spectacular displays of food, including sides of gravadlax salmon and prawns, displayed in ice carvings, as Tsogo Sun’s finest chefs took the opportunity to present modern variations on classical favourites. An operatic performance by ZigZag, complete with trapeze artists suspended from the iconic building took guests by surprise, adding yet another element to an outstanding evening of exceptional experiences. Addressing the guests, Sol Kerzner, former chairman and chief executive officer “At the Beverly we of Southern Sun Hotels, always knew that said; “It is a great pleasure ‘good enough never is’ and privilege for me to have been asked to be part of the and that the customer celebration of the Beverly was everything” Hills 50th anniversary. The Beverly was the first hotel that I designed, built and operated in South Africa and the opening of the hotel in December 1964 was an important moment in my career in

the hospitality industry. The Beverly was a cornerstone of the Southern Sun Group, which I started in 1969 and which later became Tsogo Sun. It was also South Africa’s first new resort hotel to be awarded five stars and the property set a new standard for hotels in this country and was part of the foundation for the country’s tourism future. The hotel has proudly maintained its five-star status for its entire 50-year history and I attribute this in large part to the dedication of the hotel management and employees who were, and remain, committed to providing an outstanding service for all guests.

I look back on the exciting times we had back then – setting new standards in the industry and working with a great team to establish and maintain the reputation and status of the Beverly Hills as South Africa’s first true luxury resort 5Durban

hotel. Employee turnover was very low and the team learnt the importance of delivering consistently excellent service and memorable experiences for our guest. At the Beverly we always knew that ‘good enough never is’ and that the customer was everything to us. I am delighted that the Beverly remains a five-star property today and is still clearly an important part of Tsogo Sun. I wish Marcel von Aulock and his capable team every success in the future and wish the Beverly another 50 years of success and relevance to South African tourism.”

von Aulock stated; “For thousands of South African and international guests, the Beverly Hills is so much more than a luxury hotel; and the outpouring of memories that have come from its loyal guests since the start of its 50th anniversary celebrations are testament to the fact. For five decades, the Beverly Hills has been a place where memories have been made. It carries an air of grace and luxury, and there’s something intangible about the hotel that strikes you the moment you enter the doors. ‘Something special’ is hard to put into words, but that’s what the Beverly Hills is. This is a hotel that is close to our hearts at Tsogo Sun. It was the first hotel to be opened by

5Durban

Sol Kerzner and was a core part of the group on its formation when Kerzner joined forces with South African Breweries. It remains as iconic to Tsogo Sun as it ever was, epitomising our brand values of passion, energy, variety, seductiveness and leaders, and holding true to our promise of creating great experiences. There’s no doubt that exceptional experiences are the hallmark of our property on the rocks in uMhlanga – and we consider it a privilege to have been part of so many wonderful memories for the people who have been our guests for the past 50 years. In celebrating this iconic hotel we pay tribute to our guests and to the special moments they have allowed us to share with them. Saluté to the Beverly Hills on her 50th anniversary!” World renowned chef, Dr Bill Gallagher, also past director at Tsogo Sun in the communications and food and beverage departments, posted this comment on Facebook: “Congratulations to John de Canha and his fantastic team on the 50th anniversary of the Beverly Hills hotel. I’m sorry I cannot be there with you to celebrate but send my best wishes for what I am sure is going to be a beautiful celebration. Sol will be a little nostalgic I bet, yet at the same time feel a great sense of pride for this is his real baby that has turned into the grand dame of five-star hotels. I look back with great fondness of my many memories of the fantastic people that I had the pleasure of working with at the ‘Heavenly Bills’ as we affectionately called it.” As a group with a portfolio of over 90 hotels and 14 entertainment destinations, Tsogo Sun is undoubtedly taking the lead in the South African hospitality, gaming and entertainment industry in southern Africa. With the Beverly Hills being one of its most exceptional properties. Durban and the 5 Star Durban team celebrates 50 years of the Beverly Hills Hotel, fondly remembering it’s grace and elegance throughout the past 5 decades! 

onestly, I was a little apprehensive about the whole houseboat thing, not least of all because most of my experiences on boats and yachts have been uncomfortable and exhausting to say the least. (to my credit though – they were mostly ocean experiences in terrible weather) I’m not the easiest person to please, and I really didn’t expect much by way of luxury from a houseboat on a lake I hadn’t ever seen or heard of before – Pongola… Jozini… these places sound close to Swaziland and Mozambique – The kind of “African Experience” I’d grown up with in Mpumalanga, filled with bugs, scary noises and not much by way of comfort. I’m a shameless stiletto and Chanel No.5 kind of girl, and I had braced myself for a proper camping-like experience. Boy was I wrong! The 3.5 hour trip from uMhlanga to Jozini passed quickly on the pleasant roads, scattered with indigenous Nguni Cattle and Goats – there was plenty to see – and I found myself enjoying the road trip itself, much to my surprise! We were in Zululand – The Zulu Kingdom. I focused on seeing all this through a tourists eyes, the crude mud-huts along the road, with views of the vast lake as far as the eye can see made me feel quite silly for our little piece of “prime real estate” with a sliver of a distant sea view. It was beginning to feel quite magical to be honest, the rains had left the landscape bright, lush green, and we were heading for an adventure… Shayamanzi Houseboats depart from their mooring on the jetty at Jozini Tiger Lodge – this was our destination. We arrived a little past noon, and were greeted by friendly staff at the hotel, ushered to the dining room where we were to meet up with the rest of our group, and treated to lunch. The rain came and went as we enjoyed conversations and

our meals, it didn’t seem to put a damper on anyone’s spirits – we were all far too excited, myself included. (this surprised me – I wasn’t expecting to be excited at all!) After lunch we were taken by mini bus to the jetty, far below the lodge on the water’s edge. As we awaited the tender boats to transport us to the main boat the rain showered us, and still none of us seemed to mind – it was all so carefully planned, and organized. we felt taken care of every step of the way. veg and simply fantastic corn bread, all prepared fresh, on board by the talented Malawian Chef; Mike. We were treated to a perfect Passion Fruit Cheesecake for dessert. This was the first of many succulent, indulgent meals that we would be treated to throughout the trip, including “Braai” and the best Lemon Meringue Pie that has ever passed my fussy little lips! The food was astonishingly divine, from breakfasts to snacks, to gorgeous dinners and desserts. The trip is a gastronomical treat, and will impress even the toughest critic. Having consumed our fair share of wine from the bar we decided to take a dip in the Jacuzzi, which were told had been heated by the engines throughout our journey – it was indeed quite the treat!

The next morning started early, with a quick cup of tea; then we were all off to do some Game viewing from the calm water we had moored in. Branson, our skipper on our vessel has the keenest eye, and pointed out all manner of wildlife and game, even turning off the engines and rowing us closer to take photos of the creatures. This was the closest I had ever been to most of these animals. You can go an as many game drives as you like, but I doubt that much can compare to the experience of a water safari. We saw Rhinoceros, Elephants, Crocodiles, Hippopotamus, Warthog, Zebra, many different antelope and birds that would make even a birding idiot like me go “waaaaow!…” – It was by far the most lovely experience I have ever had looking at wildlife. Once we’d returned and had our breakfast we set off yet again for the second leg of our journey, we were to moor on the other end of the lake, back close to Jozini dam, where we would set off on a fishing excursion that afternoon as the sun was setting through the clouds – again, an experience I had never thought I would enjoy quite so much, and no, we didn’t quite manage to hook a tiger fish, but we did all enjoy a drink, and talk about how the weather was causing such poor fishing… We had all begun to settle in on our little floating oasis, and our last evening aboard the Shayamanzi II was relaxed, as we all chattered away with the sound of nothingness in the background. We set off back to the Jetty the following morning, and we all said our farewells and goodbyes to the staff and new friends we had now made. It was informal and casual, but not gritty and yucky and muddy and gross, it was sophisticated but not pretentious, it was unassuming, Shayamanzi is what it says on the tin – and you owe it to yourself to experience it once in your life at the very least. I honestly didn’t want to go home; I wanted to go again, and a small part of me was so sad to give up this new found piece of absolute serenity… We shall have to return soon! 

Hudson set about creating a replica of the Belfast City Hall in Northern Ireland. The kiln which he designed and built himself is fired about eight times a year with paraffin oil to a temperature of 1380 degrees Celsius. It takes 18 hours to fire and 3 days to cool. There are several game parks in the area where a wide variety of African antelope such as the large eland, can be seen, and the bird life is nothing short of magnificent, with the bearded vulture or lammergeier often circling in the sky above. Flora includes the indigenous protea, rare cycads and ancient tree ferns. Photo: Mark Peacock

DAYS AT SEA BEACH LODGE Tel: +27 (0)39 313 0013 http://www.daysatsea.co.za The gentle murmur of the Indian Ocean is a constant lullaby. Here, close to the city of Durban in South Africa’s “forgotten paradise”, lies a true gem. Days at Sea - a luxury hotel with just 6 suites, is a hideaway in the true sense of the word, a refuge for lovers of nature, first-class cuisine and fine wine. The European background of artist and photographer Dr. Guido Schoeldgen and his wife Annette, a fashion designer, is evident throughout. Clear-cut lines, refreshing pictures and sculptures with accompanying texts characterise the beachfront hotel. Each suite is a world on its own, a masterpiece of design in exquisite shades of aqua blue. The spacious pool set over the ocean is illuminated at night. Above it are the restaurant and lounge with projected images and music ranging from Pavarotti to Café Del Mar. The chef makes suggestions, the guests decide and then enjoy - fusion cuisine, a combination of Italy and France with a dash of Asia, “con-fusion cuisine” as Guido jokingly calls it. The five-star country house is surrounded by three world-class golf courses - Wildcoast, San Lameer and Southbroom – and several leading game reserves, home to the “big five”, are within driving distance 39 Effingham Parade, Trafalgar
