1. FIAMMA GRILL

2. LUCKY SHAKER

Dressed to the nines, red lipstick perfectly applied we start on the North Coast in Ballito, at Fiamma Grill. This restaurant is sophisticated with a relaxed ambiance, boasting sleek touches like the Koi pond and outdoor pool area as it forms part of the luxury Coco De Mar Boutique Hotel, with it’s unique coastal charm.

We hop into the drop top and drive South bound on the M4 towards Umhlanga where we make our next stop at Lucky Shaker, a cocktail bar that focuses on creating fresh, seasonal drinks as well as a selection of simple but delicious burgers, tacos and bar snacks.

It is the perfect place to meet with friends and one is truly spoilt for choice with the variety of quality food, craft beer and cocktails to elevate the experience.

Boasting an enormous selection of over 70 carefully chosen whiskies including bourbon, rye, Irish, Scotch, Japanese, Canadian and Taiwanese. Lucky Shaker’s spirits, liqueurs, aperitifs and digestives are sourced from around the world and it’s a collection they’re proud of. The craft beer on tap is rotated on a weekly basis to try and showcase some of the great beers being made by passionate South Africans.

The weekly Deep House Sunday Sessions have become a local favourite. Sporting events are broadcast live and private functions are catered to often. At Fiamma Grill you choose - traditional fine dining or grill house and the trendy outdoor pool bar is a perfect spot for sipping a cosmo poolside as we inhale the hazy mist of the ocean that swathes the outdoor area, sorry Jo’Burg - that’s something money can’t buy!

What’s their signature dink you may ask? None other than good ol’ H2O. Water is refilled all evening to keep patrons adequately hydrated and to ensure they have an enjoyable yet responsible experience. Good on you Lucky Shaker, guilt free drinking is always a good idea!

3. BREWHAUS Still further down the yellow-brick-road aka the M4, we arrive in Durban North and find ourselves at BrewHaus. This establishment is likened to the great Oz because these people are pure wizards. ‘All are welcome’ is the underpinning philosophy, encouraging people from all walks of life from those (like moi) who prefer the LBD to those trendy hipsters who sport torn jeans and multiple tattoos – all are welcome to indulge in an ice cold draught with a classic chicken mayo zaam (The Brewster).

Photo: Lucky Shaker © Murie Bros

Brew Haus provide a platform for brewers, micro-breweries and distillers alike to showcase what they have to offer, and be pioneers of a trend taking the world by storm. Beer lovers are in for a treat boasting 16 craft beers on tap in conjunction with local lagers and imported Japanese rice beer as well as Belgian ale. Thirsty anyone? Better yet, Brew Haus is probably the only establishment I know of that offers ‘bottomless popcorn’, yes please! The aroma of fresh popcorn would certainly entice anyone and everyone up the carpeted, neon lit staircase straight to the “craft federation”. 

In 2015 the city found its place in yet another prestigious article - the New York Times’ “52 Places to go in 2015”. Durban beat the likes of Burgundy - France, Orlando - Florida and even Lower Manhattan - New York to reach #7 on the list, with the New York Times saying; “No one has bad things to say about Durban… they will agree that its beachfront promenade is lovely and the weather is pleasant year round.” We’re sure Durbanites will certainly agree!

to other SA cities. While most of the country’s dollar millionaires live in Johannesburg, Durban is producing millionaires at a faster rate than the country’s average “millionaire growth rate”. With this “millionaire growth” came many new opportunities, and employment has spiked in recent years, with Durban’s unemployment rate sitting at 16.5% according to Statistics SA’s quarterly Labour Force Survey. This, when compared with Nelson Mandela Bay, with the highest unemployment rate at 33.2% is proof that Durban is ahead of the pack, and is setting an example for the rest of the economy to follow.

With tourism booming in the city and so many things to do, it shouldn’t be long before Durban is on everyone’s mind. Only time will tell just how many more accolades Durban can rack up - but the future is very bright for this golden child of South Africa… Must be those soft, golden beaches! 

LOERIES LAND IN DURBAN The Loeries are the “Oscars” of the highly competitive brandcommunication industry in Africa and the Middle East. On the 15th & 16th August, they were held in Durban for the very first time, with a sell-out audience of 2 000 people, at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

O

ver 4 000 delegates were in town, although the total footprint was estimated at around 7 000 as a result of both ceremonies. Visitors included high-powered chief executives and key decision-makers in the advertising industry, which is worth R40 billion in South Africa alone. Some 160 judges, including celebrity industry big shots from around the world, spent the week deliberating over 3 000 entries in more than 20 categories. Preceding this landmark event was a week of activities, stimulating minds in the industry, and creating quite the buzz around various venues and hot-spots in the City. Win or lose, there was no stopping the parties being held around Durban. Various party venues were along the beachfront, which was a big attraction for delegates, many of whom have not been to the city for years or seen the upgraded promenade until this week. A special Loeries I Heart Market, “I Heart Loeries Market”, was held at the beachfront on Sunday and thrilled all in attendance. Some judges even went surfing before heading off to the Durban ICC for their judging sessions. And what some influential visitors have seen could lead to more TV adverts being shot in the city. Egyptian film director Ali Ali, said on Friday that he was keen to do just that. “I love the beachfront, the art deco… I have asked Carol Coetzee, the chief executive of the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission, for some images so that I can help market the location,” he said. One of the highlights of Sunday night’s ceremony was the surprise appearance by South African hip-hop kingpin AKA, performing the first official Loeries song, “No”. As part of a social campaign to celebrate brand creativity, Songstruct brought together Burna Boy, AKA, DJ Clock & Timo ODV to record the song specifically for The Loeries 2015 For the first time in 2015, winners from across Africa and the Middle East region were announced together in each category. This year also saw the addition of two new categories - Music Videos and Service Design. Music video production in the region has seen tremendous growth in both quality and creativity over the last number of years, and the inclusion of the new category recognises exceptional work and talent in this sphere.

5Durban

The value of the Loeries to the city is estimated at R100 million, and the public relations value is a further R150m. Mayor James Nxumalo said the city was excited to host an event of such magnitude -“The architectural layout of our city alone complements the creative theme that is central to this global gathering of creative minds. We are confident we will deliver one of the best Loeries in history because of our world-class events facilities. This alone shows that the city is indeed a hub of creativity and innovation.” 

EXPERIENCE AUTHENTIC AFRICA IN DURBAN Durban boasts more than just a few attractions, coupled with amazing sub-tropical weather – Durban lures sun-seekers from around the world, and they’re discovering that Durban is more than just gorgeous beaches. Something on everyone’s to-do list when they travel, is to experience the culture. Township Tours are right up there when it comes to culturally rich experiences. By Zamaswazi Mdhluli

ownships are home to a vast cross-section of the KwaZuluNatal province’s population. The next time you’re wondering what to do with yourself, try a Township Tour! Townships such as Inanda, Umlazi and Clermont are establishing routes for tourists, giving you the very best of what they have to offer. These three places have tour guides who are very familiar with each township and will ensure that you won’t miss a thing. For those who have never stepped foot in a township, taking one of these tours will be an eye-opening experience. It really is a cultural experience for local and international tourists. Don’t self-drive and get lost though, call one of the many reputable tour operators in the area.

Shisa nyama (a Zulu term for a traditional barbeque literally meaning to “burn meat”) at Tate’s Kasi Grill, Clermont

“to delve even deeper into the cultural experience, you can visit the institution that is Shakaland”

These tours give you a first-hand look at how people in the townships live. You’ll get to see historical sites, see their taverns, shisa nyama’s (braai or BBQ restaurants) and mingle with the locals. If you’re headed to Umlazi, Max’s Lifestyle should be one of your stops. You’ll get to experience how people in the township have fun and you’ll probably learn a few dance moves along the way. If you find yourself in the small township of Clermont and want to grab a bite to eat, head over to Tate’s Kasi Grill for some shisa nyama. You’ll get a platter of your choice of meat and sides for “cheap-cheap” as they say. The Inanda heritage route is also worth a day – see where Mahatma Ghandi developed his philosophy of passive resistance. While you are experiencing authentic township life, you should complete the cultural experience and see how the Zulu’s live at the Phezulu Safari Park, here is where you’ll see how interesting and beautiful this African culture is. Here, for over 30 years, the Gasa clan has allowed visitors to Phezulu the opportunity to savour the taste and feel the rhythm of Africa. Visitors are taken into traditional thatched huts, where the various artefacts, beliefs and rituals are explained, giving visitors an understanding into the charming Zulu culture. The Zulu dancing show is impressive with the dancers in their traditional apparel, showing off their skills with elegance, liveliness and humouryou’re guaranteed a remarkable experience. If you’d like to delve even deeper into the cultural experience, you can visit the institution that is Shakaland – originally built as a set for movie productions like Shaka Zulu & John Ross it truly has stood the test of time. Many would suggest one of their two day packages – including all sorts of information, and a visit to the Sangoma (Traditional Healer)! KZN is not just a pretty face, it has some substance to its beauty which makes it even more wonderful. 

ou would be forgiven for thinking you’ve magically popped up in the middle of a glossy postcard. It’s just the kind of feeling you get when you first take in the sprawling beaches of the magnificent Seychelles. The whitish sand, mesmerising blue waters and unpolluted sky create an effect that can best be described as nature’s version of a perfectly “photoshopped” image. And this nearly-flawless beauty is precisely what attracts more than 200-thousand tourists here every year. If that doesn’t sound like much to you, consider this – the entire population of the Seychelles could comfortably fit into Joburg’s FNB Stadium, with seats to spare. That means the island receives more than double the number of its actual residents in international visitors annually. It stands to reason, then, that the Seychelles could teach other countries a thing or two about tourism and good business. Its economy – a fairly stable one, I might add – relies almost exclusively on tourism-related income and tuna exports. In 2013, the archipelago joined the east3ROUTE, which includes Mozambique, Swaziland and KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. The crossborder initiative, launched in 2011 and driven by KZN, promotes economic growth, job creation and tourism among its members. But the connection between South Africa and the Seychelles started long before 2013. One look at the fabulous Eden Island will prove that – 39 percent of the luxury homes there are owned by South Africans. The exotic group of islands – situated in the Indian Ocean, off the African coastline – was the location for the 2015 edition of the east3ROUTE Investment Seminar. The other three countries have already hosted the event previously. In essence, these gatherings offer an opportunity for the government and business sectors of the four countries to find ways to share resources, skills and investment opportunities.

rand holiday resort in Tinley Manor, on the KZN North Coast. Delegates were blown away by the five-star Savoy Resort and Spa, where they were hosted during the conference. Since opening its doors last year, the Savoy has proven to be a resounding success and the destination of choice for international visitors. As a result, KZN will be seeking expert advice from those who were involved in that development on how best to tackle the local one. Although the resort plan is still in its infancy, Tongaat Hulett Developments and the KZN government guarantee it will happen - and say it will be unlike anything else on offer currently. There are also plans for a tourism school nearby, similar to the internationally-acclaimed Seychelles Tourism Academy. But to realise the dream of creating a resort that will attract visitors from far beyond our borders requires a lot more than just great accommodation. “We need to increase air connectivity between the various member countries,” says Michael Mabuyakhulu, KZN’s MEC for Economic Development and Tourism. “We’ve already established a technical committee that is now working to coordinate this and working with airlines in discussing the issues of route development between the various member countries. For instance, we want to see a direct flight between Seychelles and Durban.” And that improved air connectivity is also expected to boost the economy through increased trade. To that end, Durban already has a huge trump card – the Dube TradePort, a southern African air logistics platform that forms part of the King Shaka International Airport precinct. Its acting CEO, Hamish Erskine, says there has been an increased focus on promoting intra-African trade.

The five-day expedition by government officials, business leaders and other interested parties proved to be quite fruitful. As a result of the relationships formed there, some interesting things are now in store for KwaZulu-Natal.

“West Africa has a very developed distribution cargo system. Southern Africa hasn’t developed as strong a network, (while) East Africa is developing a similarly strong network,” he says.

“We looked at the resorts that are out here. Obviously we know the Seychelles is a fantastic tourism destination; they’ve really got it right,” says Trenley Tilbrook of Tongaat Hulett Developments, on the sidelines of the seminar.

“We’re very much wanting to see that as our future growth area. You’ll notice next time you go to some of the more high-end retailers you’ll see goods from Kenya, from Ethiopia. There is already a flow of fresh produce and things like that coming into South Africa and we need to get that intraAfrican trade moving now.”

“It’s really been great to learn what the guys have been doing out here, as well as build our relationships and collectively work on projects. We’ve had some great meetings out here as well.” One of the projects Tilbrook is referring to is the creation of a multi-million

LAMBERT HOUSE

DELIGHTFULLY GRAND Durban has a new darling - the charming Lambert House, a refreshing change from the ordinary! By Meredith Haywood

S

teeped in history, this 118 year old house has been transformed from a grand manor family home into a delightfully grand boutique guest house. Coowners Lisa Woodhouse & Willard Maseko manage this beautiful retreat, which has been lovingly restored, updated and decorated by Lisa herself. Lisa had in the past owned her own interior design company, Woodhouse Designs, which certainly shows in every detail. Once Lisa’s family home, she and Willard meticulously transformed the house into a luxurious 5 suite boutique guesthouse. Each space with it’s own distinct style, and stylish flair. Every fitting, fixture and design element of this hotel pays careful homage to the history and colonial backbone of the property. One of the reasons for this perfection may be the sentimentality that Lisa lent to the space, “Each of the rooms has been decorated according to my children’s personalities. We have the tranquil Sun Room, the enchanting Safari Room, the exciting Jungle Room, the magical Honeymoon Suite, and the calming Ocean Room. We also have the very sophisticated bar - the Rose Bar” explains Lisa Lambert House boasts gorgeous terraces, and several calm and relaxing lounging areas, as well as a picture-perfect formal lounge and dining room - perfect for any occasion Lisa continues, “Lambert House is not just a guesthouse, it’s also an ideal venue, catering to every need of bride-to-be’s, corporate events and exclusive birthday parties and occasions” One could easily imagine a splendid affair of a wedding, complete with unrivalled, grandiose photo opportunities. Lambert House is a dream destination for weddings indeed. High Tea is soon to be an offering too - and they already offer High Teas for birthdays and special occasions. This darling of Durban is truly an absolute retreat - with two heated pools, a warm and inviting kitchen - offering a refreshing personal touch and absolutely breathtaking views over the city. FOOD SHOPPING IN DURBAN

I’m a chef. Most people assume I toil over boiling pots, spend hours with a spoon poised over creative concoctions, barking orders to a brigade. I do. But to be honest most of my time is spent in costing, recipe development and shopping; A lot of shopping… By Andrew Draper

W

hen I opened Harvey’s over twenty years ago, sourcing food was a very different matter. Farmers had to be contacted; specialist food orders were placed weeks in advance, so that they could be grown. Seafood scavenged off the rocks, fish haggled in the early hours at the market. Herbs, I planted, were grown in my parents’ garden with seeds brought back from holidays overseas, which I drove to Westville to pick daily, stopping the car along the way for wild sorrel, nasturtium leaves and wild rocket on the side of the roads. Vegetables came on the daily truck by Mr. Govender, opening on both sides. Housewives and myself stood in line and had our produce weighed on an old brass scale in the rain, and a wish list was placed for the next day. Specialist lettuce, fruit and herbs were unheard of, and strawberries in season for eight weeks of the year.

nowadays. I take a deep breath and run in finding Ivan, who helps me with sweetbreads, brains and tongues. Organic and health food is also becoming very popular and my favourite is the new gem, taken over from Earth Mother in Mackeurtan Avenue called, ‘It’s All Good’, and it is. I am always reluctant to enter a shop that brands

It is wonderful how things have changed. Just this week, I’ve flown in fresh figs from Europe, Mussels from South West Africa, organic ducklings from the Midlands, trout roe from Lesotho. All by fax and email and delivered the next day. I do, however still like to go out and see what is available and fresh, for inspiration and to meet the people who work hard creating it. Here are a few of my gems. Asian food has always been popular, and I love exploring the passages of tottering steam baskets, crockery, huge wok pots and strainers, with the smell of fermented soy and dried shiitake mushrooms. Sun Sun, on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, is my favourite for many reasons. Firstly, I can order some of the best Chinese takeaway to nibble on whilst I browse freezers full of duck tongues, dim sums and pig trotters. Fridges spill with Pak Choi, Galangal, fresh Turmeric bulbs, Shemji mushrooms and quail eggs. Chinese greens are wonderfully cheap; you can pick up a bin bag full for under a hundred rand. I also like rice paper wraps, dark fermented rice vinegar with its heady aroma, ‘1000 year old’ eggs and instant noodle packets with interesting innovative flavours, containing shiny capsules of spicy duck that will still be edible long after my own expiry date. My favourite spice shop is Chohan’s opposite the Old Fort in town. The spices and nuts are well packaged and the variety is incredible. Ancient regal ilaychi nestle together, from the vibrant green fruity, floral scented ones from Sri Lanka to the smoky, citrusy darker ones from Scandinavia. Nuts so fresh, they crunch beautifully and a variety of saffron kept under the till points make me do little happy jumps. The staff is incredibly helpful, and love shaking their heads and hands in disapproval when I choose to do something odd with their spices. But the old spice market in town still has the best blends with the most wonderfully persistent sellers, with blends like ‘mother in law’s tongue’, which, when I was a child, I thought contained bits of the poor woman’s mouth. It’s also just across the road from the fish and meat market which is perfect for fresh fish, and offal that is so hard to find

itself ‘organic’, I fear I will be scolded for my leather shoes and polyester shirt by people with practical shoes made of hemp and excessive body hair. This is definitely not the case; Fridges and shelves full of organic, wheat free, gluten free, fat free, sugar free items are nestled between fruit and vegetables organically grown with that distinctive, ripened on the branch, flavour and smell. They also sell a large collection honey, dairy, soya alternatives and the best healthy pre-made meals in Durban, brownies so decadent that it is hard to believe they contain nothing naughty and let’s not forget their green bean coffee! With a crema and milky foam that only vegans could coax by pretty, hippy, maidens, bestowed with soft hands, manipulating the teats of lucky cows. It’s All Good happens to be just up the road from Bartho’s, the best fresh fish supplier in Durban, who fillet and prepare fish beautifully, a warning though - it is hard to resist the wonderful sushi available. We are also very fortunate to have some incredible markets like ‘The Morning Trade’ and the Assagay farmers market. I brave the winter mornings with my pug Barkley in tow and venture up the hill where ladies have a penchant for ponytails, bright sweaters, riding boots and dirty jodhpurs, and I go straight to Chrissies cheese. She is passionate about her variety of rotting dairy, and us cheese connoisseurs are extremely fortunate. This award winning cheesemaker has Stilton aged several years, Brie oozing under their powdery skins and cheddars of dizzying varieties. Carefully pointing out to me, where a mouse has nibbled on the edge of a block ‘because a mouse, Andrew, will only choose the best!’ finger wagging in my face, I realise she is odd - passionate, but odd, and thank God for that, or the market, and the world, would be considerably duller without her. I then toddle off, dragged by Barkley to Wild Meats where the best biltong and a variety of venison can be found. To have not experienced their wildebeest biltong, is to not have experienced a piece of mouth heaven on earth. On my way back to the car I always pop in to the organic vegetable store and get excited by courgette flowers, and wilted greens and large bulbs of celeriac. Closer to home at The Morning Trade, there are mouth treats like Coltempo, the best cured meats, that luckily for us are made in Lambert Road, and the course herb pate and smoked meats you will find at Mr Mozzies. And bread - The elixir of the Gods! Adam, the most accolated and wonderfully rude chef I know, creates manna from stoneground wheat. Speciality breads are produced on a rotational basis throughout the week, you’d do best to get there early before they run out, or wait for the next batch whilst sipping Glenwood’s best coffee and homemade ice cream.

With all this shopping… It’s no wonder I was told by a car guard yesterday; I was looking ‘prosperous’. I didn’t tip.

Fashion Scene

with Bianca Warren

“Get Red Carpet Ready” The Oscars, Golden Globes, Actors Guild Awards and many more red carpet events inspire me each and every year. These prestigious red carpet runways set the tone for high fashion evening wear trends world wide. My absolute passion is creating a masterpiece from a blank canvas for a black tie event such as the Durban July, Formal weddings, Matric dances, year-end work functions and even SA Fashion Week.

Small tips when preparing for a formal event. 1. Don’t over do your make up - a little goes a long way. This important event is not the time to experiment. 2. When in doubt add gloss - add sheer illuminating powder to the top of your cheek bones and lip-gloss and you’re ready to go.

It’s not often in Durban we get to dress up, so when there is an occasion it’s always special to make the effort and have a timeless and beautiful tailor made evening gown designed to fit your body perfectly. My tips for that perfectly “you” outfit;

3. Always finish off with a beautiful heel - ladies, pain is beauty for one night - don’t compromise. Practice a few weeks before around the house. If you can’t manage then opt for a wedge which provides a little more support and still elongates the leg.

Always be aware of your body type. Don’t find a picture of Jennifer Anniston in a fitted bodycon plunging low back line if you have an apple shape and need a bra for support. Get inspiration from celebrities that have your body shape and structure.

4. Don’t forget to shave and moisturise your legs. Adding a shimmer cream to your moisturiser also makes for stunning photographs of exposed skin.

Ask your designer to help you bring out your best features. I am always honest with my clients and find the right tones of colours and correct fabrics to warm and compliment their skin tones. I will not make an outfit that is not going to compliment your body type and won’t make you feel beautiful in it. Please be realistic when thinking of different styles or else you going to be more than a little disappointed. In order for a great fit, take along the correct bra or stick on boobs (they’re essential sometimes), spanx (you don’t want any undies lines) and shoes to your fittings. I cannot emphasise how important these items are, they can change, finish and polish your over all look.

5. Avoid showing too much skin - if you’re unsure, always show your shoulders and neckline this is flattering on all body types. We have ready to wear evening gowns available in our signature store and we’re just a phone call away to assist you for your next function. I think Durbanites need to experiment a bit more when attending events. I often have clients too scared to wear long evening gowns for formal functions and will rather be underdressed than overdressed. Walk proud and set a new standard - lets get the beautiful people of Durban back on the trend setting scene in South Africa! Till next time, live life fashionably

xoxo Bianca

DURBAN CITY HALL Tel: +27 (0)31 311 2264/9 Durban Art Gallery Tel: +27 (0)31 311 2256 Natural Science Museum The City Hall was built in the early 1900s due to the rapid growth of Durban, which had resulted in the original town hall taking on a new mantle as the Durban post office. The city fathers commissioned the new town hall in 1903, choosing what they termed a ‘bold and progressive’ design submitted by architect Stanley Hudson. Hudson set about creating a replica of the Belfast City Hall in Northern Ireland. In addition to the mayor’s parlour and municipal chambers, the building houses a public library, auditorium, and the Durban Art Gallery and Natural Science Museum. The art gallery showcases an array of South African and international artworks, while the museum displays a selection of fossils – including that of a dodo – animals, birds, reptiles and insects. The appeal of The Barnyard, and what distinguishes it from other supper theatres, is that patrons are able to take their own food.
