UMHLANGA A BRIEF HISTORY From lone cottage to tourism hub, we look back at Umhlanga’s humble beginnings almost 120 years ago. By Jeni Haywood

U

Mhlanga - the charming, trendy resort town on the coast of KwaZulu-Natal just north of Durban city is known today as the oasis from the hustle and bustle of the city, and is the destination of choice for many. uMhlanga boasts prestigious luxury hotels, breathtaking beaches, and some of the finest dining in South Africa. It’s hard to believe that this hub of activity had such humble beginnings. uMhlanga Rocks was founded in 1895 as a quiet holiday resort town for mill workers and friends by Sir Marshall Campbell. In 1863, his son Alfred built a cottage named

Oyster Lodge out of Burmese Teak, corrugated iron and reinforced concrete. The roof, painted white, served as a navigational beacon. The site of this lodge is now the site of the Luxury Oyster Box Hotel & Oyster Rocks Apartment Buildings. It didn’t take long before there were a few more cottages, and a well had to be sunk to supply water, this well still exists in the park opposite 5Durban

“the lighthouse was built to prevent ships from mistaking the Umgeni River mouth for the Harbour”

Development proceeded and the first hotel, The Victoria Hotel, was built in 1923 and included two old trams as annexes. The hotel was enormously successful and hosted, among others the famous George Bernard Shaw in 1935. After several alterations, additions and improvements, the name of the hotel was changed to Umhlanga Rocks Hotel. Among the many developments was the Wave Crest Boarding House, on the site where Umhlanga Sands Hotel now stands. In 1955 the lighthouse was built to prevent ships from mistaking the uMgeni River mouth for the Harbour. At that time the owners of the Oyster Box Hotel had purchased a large area of land from the South African Railways and Harbours Authority, who now wanted permission to erect a lighthouse on this land. After much negotiating, the parties eventually settled and the lighthouse was erected on the beach. uMhlanga continued to grow in popularity as increasing numbers of people and businesses moved out of the busy city to more luxurious offices and homes in the area. Surrounding suburbs experienced prolific development too, and this small town north of Durban has become KwaZulaNatal’s very own “Sandton by the Sea”. 

REMO’S ORIGINALE Tel: +27 (0)31 539 5955 http://www.remos.co.za Remo’s Originale is a bustling restaurant and bar very well known for its quality of food. The addition of our artisan bakery nextdoor adds a wonderfully “European” experience - think fresh artisan bread, cakes, croissants, quiches, brownies, imported meats and cheeses, olive oils, pasta and sauces to name a few. It screams Europe in the heart of suburban Durban. Being able to play with the fabrics, rich textures, threads and bobbins was my first foray into fashion. After a stint in London, my family and I returned to beautiful South Africa and my goals had moved from working to make a living to working at my passion. I started small with a few garments in a small room at Churchills. A year later I opened Carol Clark Designs in Durban North and five years later I own three boutiques and have a wonderful, loyal customer base. Some of my best moments in life are when I see a woman transformed with just a few items and some expert attention from my personally trained stylists. SK8SHADES DURBAN UPCYCLER TAKES THE WORLD BY STORM “Necessity leads to invention is what I was always told” In the case of Dave de Witt, a new pair of sunglasses was all it took. One of South Africa’s best skateboard ramp builders, Dave has taken his love for skateboarding and turned it into a creative and stylish business venture. By Forrest Schafer

S

k8Shades, launched in 2012, combines style with the urban cool of Durban skating culture in a pair of sunglasses that are not only fashionable but have also seen a long history of kickflips and skate parks. Handcrafted out of used skateboards collected from across South Africa, the shades are available in a unique range of styles and colours and can even be fitted with prescription

lenses to be completely customised for you. Bonus? A pair of these will definitely ease your environmental conscience – being completely recycled and built using environmentally-friendly materials. 5Durban

Dave de Witt, founder of Sk8shades Inaugural Issue

I caught up with the creative mind behind the shades to find out more.

“ I ended up doing the odd handyman job, repairing floors and windows, etc. while constantly researching ways to improve my work.”

1.What is the story behind Sk8Shades? I had been building skateboard ramps and bowls for a few years, after returning from working on Cruise Ships in the Caribbean. Things were good until 2010, there were no more ramps to build and I used what tools I had to make things for my parents around the house and do general handyman work to pay rent. My friend’s wife started giving me work which was always challenging. With her designs always pushing me to do more complex woodworking, I started researching joinery techniques, especially with my favourite Inaugural Issue

tool, the router, which I used to cut curves when building skate parks. I ended up doing the odd handyman job, repairing floors and windows, etc. while constantly researching ways to improve my work. Working in the driveway with one work bench didn’t help, I was always at the mercy of the elements: if it rained, no work; too windy, can’t paint. I kept saying to myself, I need to find something small that I can make, then figure out how to sell it.

When my VZ Fernsteins broke after 5 years of solid abuse, I was waiting for some quotes to be approved, one for Red

Bull, building ramps in a pool in Durban central and a backyard ramp for a friend in Pretoria amongst others. I did some research online and found most wooden sunglasses to be made from solid wood or veneers. Having no Walnut or Bamboo lying around, nor jigs to mould curves or a bandsaw to cut veneers, I wondered if I could use a piece of an old skateboard, being that it already had a curve. Some more research and I saw a few people had tried it, and there were some manufacturers out there, but I was determined to make mine different. I made the first pair on June 1st 2012 and from then on I couldn’t think of anything else other than how to make better sunglasses. The Red Bull Ramps got approved as well as the backyard ramp in Pretoria. I bought a scroll saw and any free time I had in between I dedicated to figuring out Sk8shades. I got back from Pretoria in July, paid a few months rent upfront, bought a small bandsaw, some Dremel equipment and started declining quotes for anything other than ramps or Sk8shades.

sanding, and finishing. I do all the design and manufacturing of the frames and jigs while keeping the machines setting up accurately. 4.What would you consider to be your greatest struggle so far? In the beginning the biggest struggle was how to shape the frames accurately, then figuring out how to cut the groove for the lenses. Nowadays my biggest mission is finding good help! It’s hard to find people dedicated to making things with their hands. A lot of people nowadays want to be paid for doing as little as possible.

5.Where can people buy Sk8Shades? If you are in Durban people are welcome to come out to my workshop in Pinetown and choose a pair or head out to Gateway and find them at the new Vans shop. They are also available online from my etsy shop. In Cape Town you can find them at Baseline Skate Shop in Kloof street and IYOS stores. Internationally, Chum5 in Hong Kong, Paolo Cristante in Italy, and I am working on deals with distributors in Canada and Poland. 6.Do you see yourself opening your own shop in the near future? I would love to open my own shop in Durban! It would have to be the complete package, a legit skateboarding shop to sell boards and collect boards as well as selling shades, a skateboard ramp or bowl, my workshop and office! It’s going to be a while before I get there but it’s always in my dreams.

2.Where do you find all the skateboards you use? I use my old skateboards (yes, I still skate at 36 years old) and my friends give me theirs when they are finished. That kept me going in the beginning but I now have a small network of skaters across the country collecting boards for me. I trade old boards for new boards and depending how many they have and the condition they are in, I’ll trade them a new board, a pair of shades or something that they need. 3.How long does the whole process of making one pair take? Do you do all the designing and manufacturing alone? If you gave me a skateboard on Monday, I could have 4 pairs of Sk8shades made from it by Friday (depending on the boards condition.) I have a young assistant who helps with preparation,

24

http://www.5stardurban.co.za

7.Sk8Shades have also been successful internationally. Did you ever think it would become such a success? Someone told me to open an etsy shop and after a post by itswhatiminto it went viral and I had more orders than I knew how to handle! I didn’t expect the international success, I thought I would maybe sell a few pairs locally but couldn’t believe the support I received from overseas! Having made over 600 pairs of sunglasses, over 50% have been exported! 8.What advice do you have for any creative entrepeneurs out there? Don’t forget what it’s like to be a kid. DURBAN CITY HALL Tel: +27 (0)31 311 2264/9 Durban Art Gallery Tel: +27 (0)31 311 2256 Natural Science Museum The City Hall was built in the early 1900s due to the rapid growth of Durban, which had resulted in the original town hall taking on a new mantle as the Durban post office. The city fathers commissioned the new town hall in 1903, choosing what they termed a ‘bold and progressive’ design submitted by architect Stanley Hudson. Hudson set about creating a replica of the Belfast City Hall in Northern Ireland. In addition to the mayor’s parlour and municipal chambers, the building houses a public library, auditorium, and the Durban Art Gallery and Natural Science Museum. The art gallery showcases an array of South African and international artworks, while the museum displays a selection of fossils – including that of a dodo – animals, birds, reptiles and insects. The house with its antique furniture, set in park-like gardens, offers visitors respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life and provides a glimpse into the lifestyle of the upper middle class settlers. Time-travellers can reflect on an era when the use of wagons was almost as common as our use of cars today and how a former Prime Minister was smuggled from Dundee to Greytown in a post cart. 31 Diakonia Street, Durban Open: Mon-Sat 8:30-16:00 Closed: Weekends and Holidays

ENTERTAINMENT

Catch a show at the theatre, or roll with laughter at a live comedy show THE BARNYARD THEATRE GATEWAY Tel: +27 (0)31 566 3045 http://www.barnyardtheatre.co.za The Barnyard Theatre’s 400-seater venue offers Durban theatre-goers a unique experience in evening entertainment. Theatre remains magical because it responds to the communal needs of society and the informal atmosphere at The Barnyard lends itself to this as shows are particularly formatted to ensure that the audience becomes the final cast member. The appeal of The Barnyard, and what distinguishes it from other supper theatres, is that patrons are able to take their own food. Although a new kitchen was added to the venue at the beginning of 2007, The Barnyard retained its “bring your own” food policy, but now provides the convenience of food (gourmet pizzas, platters and hot meals) available in the venue. 5  Durban is a fresh, new approach to tourism in Kwazulu-Natal, we are absolutely passionate about what we do, and we are set to put Durban and the Kwazulu-Natal Province firmly on the global tourism map. Durban is, quite simply the most amazing and idyllic coastal tourism destination in South Africa, with over 30% of domestic tourism already heading our way. 5  Durban was established in 2013 to show the world that the luxury, high-end experiences they are looking for are right here. Taking notes from international destinations, and the way that they market their destinations as brands, we are using “DURBAN” as a brand, the umbrella under which all our wonderful KZN experiences come together. There are so many things to offer in KZN - bet you didn’t know you could take a tour of a sugar mill, or go and explore the smallest desert in the world, or see some of the oldest rock paintings in Africa, or that you could get up close and personal with Africa’s wildcats, or even see the elephant with the world’s longest tusks! PHOTO SPOTLIGHT: THE BEACHFRONT AMPHITHEATRE AND SUNKEN GARDENS These beautiful gardens, located on Durban’s Beachfront, were built as a relief project during the Great Depression years of the late 1920s/early 1930s. The project was one of several initiated by the state/city council to provide work for the growing numbers of unemployed. Unemployed white-collared lawyers and blue-collared workers worked shoulder to shoulder with picks and shovels to put food on the table during these difficult times.
