CALIFORNIA DREAMING Situated on Durban’s prestigious Golden Mile, California Dreaming is a prime location for enjoying the finer things the city has to offer. The Beach Bar is the perfect venue for sundowners with friends, offering a wide variety of flamboyant cocktails, extensive wine list, local and imported beer and other spirits of choice. There can be no greater joy in life than being amongst friends sipping on a cold drink and listening to the ocean waves lap the shore. California Dreaming has definitely struck gold with their 250 seater deck stylishly lit up at night, which exudes an ambiance of jenesequa. The menu is a mix of palate-pleasing dishes to delight young and old. If a majestic view is what you are after, then The Terrace is where you should spend the evening, looking out on the Promenade and the Indian Ocean. The Terrace, which can be booked for private functions, has a private lounge and bar offering an awe-inspiring Platinum Drinks menu. California Dreaming is ideal for brunch and late suppers and will leave patrons inspired to dream of the warm ocean, delicious cuisine and enchanting atmosphere.
THE SANDBAR SandBar, which can be found along the Dolphin Coast in Umdloti is KZN’s best kept secret, but not for long! This establishment is a combination of restaurant and 20 seater cocktail bar boasting an assortment of local and international award winning wines, mind-numbingly delicious cocktails and good, honest food. The mood is both vibrant and relaxed with a touch of sophistication, very much like the city of Durban itself. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with warm colours and the walls flanked by old images of long board surfers to beautiful photography of past generations. SandBar is the perfect venue for a Sunday afternoon to sit back and soak up the sea views, enjoying melodic music while you indulge in a colourful cocktail or two.
HARRY’S COCKTAIL BAR Secluded in the Umhlanga Centre one can find the benchmark for innovative food and fine dining in Durban, which is none other than Harvey’s Restaurant. The constantly evolving menu and inventive specials can be found amidst crystal chandeliers and leather cladded walls. A dramatic venue for equally theatrical food, efficient and chic service and home to sensational cocktails is Harry’s Bar, inside Harvey’s, which hosts an exciting evening extravagance with their flaming award winning cocktails. At Harry’s Bar, you can find the classics. But you can also find drinks they have restored from unfortunate neglect by history and other drinkeries of ill repute. And by ‘find,’ of course they mean ‘drink’. “Time To Tanqueray” is fast becoming one of their signature cocktails which is sure to tantalise and tease your tastebuds. The light snack menu and the unforgettable “Harvey’s Signature Chocolate Journey Designed for Two” caters to the discerning and to the indulgent appetite. So why not just pop in for a coffee, cocktail and dessert after a wonderful evening of jolly good times, frolics and tomfoolery.
THE CHAIRMAN A visit to The Chairman is like being transported to a time of impeccable dressing and when jazz ruled the world. You may easily think you are in a New Orleans or Sophia Town lounge. Driving on Gandhi Road (the former Point Road) the first thing you notice about the Chairman is the dazzling chandelier that immediately gives patrons an idea of what to expect. The interior is an eclectic mix of ‘old school’ leather finery with a barber chair being one of the focal pieces. However, there is so much aesthetic charm within the space that the eye wanders in all directions trying to take it all in. The vinyl wall is decorated top to bottom with records of the most famous jazz musicians of all time and staying true to form, the unmistakable toot of trumpets and scintillating saxophones can be heard all night. The Chairman is a great place to sip on a cognac or whisky after a long day in the bustling city.

Recently I was invited to stay at the gorgeous Fairmont Zimbali Resort & Zimbali Lodge for a weekend. Little did I know that not only would I be a guest, but that I would experience true world-class luxury, right on my own doorstep.
U
pon arrival we were greeted warmly, and washed our hands in the customary Zulu way, and from there not a single thing made me feel lost or anxious at all – and admittedly I usually find myself feeling nervously awkward at these things… Hotels are big, scary places, full of people, and I never quite know what I should be doing… But here the staff are quite intuitive, and I was left with no uncertainty of what was in store for our group. We were treated to a sumptuous lunch at the Mexican cantina style AYOBA Restaurant, located next one of the most inviting pool areas I have ever seen! After sampling everything that was on offer, I can recommend the calamari, and the cocktails! Oh those cocktails! What a spoil!
5Durban
As if just being treated to this weekend wasn’t enough, we were all given treatments at the Willow Stream Spa too… and I must say it truly is relaxing and does everything that it says on the tin – and then some! My feet have never looked better than they did after that little pedicure – I really neeeeeed to go back and try their other offerings! My first night was to be spent at the 5 Star Fairmont Zimbali Resort Hotel, in a full suite no less! The suites are all beautifully appointed, with simple, understated décor, yet managing to encompass the full luxury experience… My favourite part had to be the cute kitchenette setup. And the bath – in the MIDDLE of the bathroom! Ooooh it’s enough to make any girl go “Squeeee!”

The stunning view from Fairmont Zimbali Lodge
Dinner on this first evening was at the OSA Restaurant, Fairmont Zimbali Resort’s fine dining establishment… I was in awe of what we were presented! Not only is the Vinum Bar area where we had our pre-dinner drinks spectacularly pretty, but the chefs certainly know their stuff!!! The highlight of dinner being the Beets and Salmon – served on a solid block of Himalayan salt – yep! A plate made of salt! So cool!!! All of the courses were skillfully paired with wines which accompanied the meals perfectly, and I can’t wait to return for more.
“I woke on the morning of our departure to nothing but the sound of birds and the most beautiful sunrise”
The following morning saw our media group heading off on a gorgeous nature walk through the eco-estate, we even spotted a few buck and birds (not that I had a clue!) The guide, Jane Bertram is an exceptionally knowledgable and entertaining guide – she made me engage with our beautiful environment in a way I didn’t know I could! After our bit of physical
exercise we were transported back to the resort, where we enjoyed a great buffet breakfast spread at the Coral Tree Restaurant – complete with pastries and all the breakfast delicassies you’d expect from Fairmont.
Above: Vinum Bar at Zimbali Resort. Left: That spectacular bathroom
After our breakfast spoils, we made our way to the Fairmont Zimbali Lodge – Fairmont Resort’s older sister. This lodge, with its cute and elegant colonial touches, is a true African gem. I was immediately drawn to the Victorian tub and just crashed into the warm arms of the luxurious bed… Room service sent me a lovely snack to nibble whilst I recouperated and relaxed after our long morning in the balmy coastal outdoors. Dinner was served at the Thandi restaurant – a proper treat that I had at this point become quite acustomed to. The highlight for me has to have been the Fillet Steak, it was a mouthwateringly well prepared dish! I woke on the morning of our departure to nothing but the sound of birds and the most beautiful sunrise. I reluctantly dragged myself out of bed to have another great breakfast and head home… sadly.
TOP TIPS Pack your sunscreen! It’s an essencial under the African sun Don’t forget comfortable walking shoes. There are many trails and paths you can walk and discover during your stay. There are golf carts available and they will transport you and your bags anywhere you need them to! Simply dial 9 on any of the phones to request a bellhop or golfcart to save yourself from wrestling with your luggage. Non guests at the resort are welcome at any of the restaurants. Call reception to make your booking (in advance!) The toiletries supplied are really lovely, but if you are partial to a particular spoil – I’d suggest you bring it along, that way your soak will be every bit as special as it should be! *nudge nudge wink wink* LUSH bath bomb anyone? The beaches at Fairmont Zimbali are beautiful indeed, but they are not great for swimming in. That stretch of beautiful beach is not protected by shark nets and there are no lifeguards on duty either. Add to that the fact that the backwash is very strong - and it’s just better to look rather than swim.

Roxi’s SPOONFUL
Looking back and reflecting on my life, who would have thought I would be living out my dream and following my passion! Food has always been a staple in life, when other things weren’t! Food for me is something extremely special, as it can evoke many memories (good and bad) from just a simple smell to something visual. When I smell freshly grated lemon zest, it takes me back to my childhood, watching my Avò (my Portuguese gran) in the kitchen making her special spiced cake and adding lemon zest to the batter! I zone out completely as I can see myself sitting on her counter waiting to lick the bowl! Don’t you get like that by a certain smell? I was fortunate that, growing up my parents encouraged me to go wild in the kitchen, and I definitely owe my passion for food to them! I entered Masterchef SA to try change my life and try to follow my dreams and begin a career career of food - I entered as a very shy, confidence lacking girl, thinking her food was not good enough… But, as I progressed further and further in the competition my confidence grew, and finally I had that a-ha moment, where I began to think I could win! I began to believe that my food was really good enough - more than that! It was winner! I won Masterchef SA Season 3 and my life has changed dramatically, the only thing that is staple is the food! It has been a humbling and uplifting experience, and I don’t think I’ll ever match the high that came with being announced the winner. After all of the experiences and highlights, I am now about to embark on my very own culinary adventure - following my dreams and opening up my very own café and Patisserie right here in Durban! I decided to call it Spoonful Eatery, as I will be dishing up spoonfuls of love! I’m keeping the location a secret for now - but in the coming weeks I will be sharing hints with all of my loyal fans, to whom I am eternally grateful! I am very excited to be chosen as part of the 5 Star Durban team - As a food Guru, and look forward to sharing more with everyone, from my favourite spots to eat, recipes, tips to… Well you name it! Look out for future issues of 5 Star Durban, where I’ll be sharing recipes and favourite eating spots - let’s go on a food journey together!

“Black is the new black” More than any other item of clothing, I believe the classic “Little Black Dress” will take you anywhere - it has long been a wardrobe essential. With simple clean lines, a timeless style and quality fabric a typical LBD is intended to be a long lasting, versatile staple item in your wardrobe for years to come. I often have Clients coming to me asking me to design them something that they can dress up or down and able to wear to any occasion. And I always recommend we design a little black number. Having that perfect LBD you can dress up or down with a few minimalistic accessories. Leaders in fashion ring out ranges each season “navy is the new black” “red is the new black” but at the end of the season “black is the new black” always returns. 2015 sees us adding key trends that will keep us feminine, sophisticated, well groomed and confident for any occasion. The LBD could not be more tasteful this season in the shift dress silhouette or flair in an A-line skirt. This winter a combination of leather, lace and sheer long sleeves are very on trend when added to your timeless LBD.
To keep warm and also add a pop of colour this season are a selection of sophisticated throws, jackets and wraps available at my signature store. A LBD can, depending on the occasion be teamed up with a leisure slouchy blazer or leather jacket. One of my personal favourite LBD’s was from the movie ‘breakfast at tiffany’s’, accessorised with pearls and worn by Audrey Hepburn. This Givenchy dress was simple and stunning. The dress set a record in 2006 with it was auctioned for R8 million rand, confirming that owning a “Little Black Dress” is not only a major investment, but it makes a woman confident and elegant and it oozes love and romance. Perhaps you can turn your LBD into a family heirloom and hand it down to your daughter! A selection of Commercial LBD’s and one off couture numbers are available from my signature store, come in and chat - let’s make you timeless and ageless! Until the next issue, have a good LBD evening out you deserve it!

DURBAN CITY HALL Tel: +27 (0)31 311 2264/9 Durban Art Gallery Tel: +27 (0)31 311 2256 Natural Science Museum The City Hall was built in the early 1900s due to the rapid growth of Durban, which had resulted in the original town hall taking on a new mantle as the Durban post office. The city fathers commissioned the new town hall in 1903, choosing what they termed a ‘bold and progressive’ design submitted by architect Stanley Hudson. Hudson set about creating a replica of the Belfast City Hall in Northern Ireland. In addition to the mayor’s parlour and municipal chambers, the building houses a public library, auditorium, and the Durban Art Gallery and Natural Science Museum. The art gallery showcases an array of South African and international artworks, while the museum displays a selection of fossils – including that of a dodo – animals, birds, reptiles and insects. The appeal of The Barnyard, and what distinguishes it from other supper theatres, is that patrons are able to take their own food. Although a new kitchen was added to the venue at the beginning of 2007, The Barnyard retained its “bring your own” food policy, but now provides the convenience of food (gourmet pizzas, platters and hot meals) available in the venue.
