Editor’s Column Great Getaways Await You in the Northwoods It appears winter tourism in the Northwoods is progressing at a high note – plenty of snow for sledders and skiers and plenty of cold for ice fishermen to travel across frozen lakes for some angling adventures. One resort owner who caters to cross-country skiers told me that 2021-22 is shaping up to be her best winter season ever. From the national parks to local facilities, there’s been a real surge in people seeking out Nature’s best. The snowmobile trails are keeping the trail groomers busy. Give them a wide berth – and a thumbsup or wave – when you encounter them. They do a heck of a job keeping the trails in excellent shape for us sledders.
When they get here they will find a large number of events for all ages to enjoy, whether as participants or spectators. I’ve marked a number of them on the calendar myself to visit, including truck and snowmobile hillclimbs, the zany bar stool races in Drummond and sled dog races. When it’s time to sit back for a spell, pubs and family-owned restaurants offer excellent food and drinks, including locally crafted brews. Check out the calendar of events in this issue of Action, book a motel or resort room for the weekend or the week, and come to the fabled land they call Up North. Dean Acheson, Editor

oon the frozen lakes of northern Wisconsin and the U.P. of Michigan will shed their winter coats, new generations of the animal and aviary kingdoms will repopulate the forests and fields, and the migration of city dwellers eager to explore the wonders of this land will commence. If you’re among the latter, it’s your cue to start making vacation plans to head here for some fishing, water skiing, shopping, or just plain enjoying the Up North lifestyle that encourages you to stay a spell. After the rough last year due to the pandemic (we all really, really need a vacation), it will be great to spread your wings, take in the refreshing air and relax by the beach with a pina colada in hand. Don’t think you can get away from work? There’s ample evidence that proves you’ll be happier and more productive overall if you give yourself time to rest and recharge! And doesn’t it seem that the days are more enjoyable when you know a vacation or day trip is in the works? There are literally thousands of pristine lakes to cast a fishing line, or to tow the kids behind your powerboat, or to set sail, or jump on a paddleboat. There are numerous rivers and streams to explore, either with a flyrod or by paddle. If you are one of the lucky ones with a cabin or condo in our neck of the woods, you don’t have to worry about making lodging reservations. However, for the rest of you travelers it’s best to book early to secure a cabin or campground spot at one of our resorts, campgrounds and motels. Early spring can be a refreshing time in the Northwoods. The major surge of visitors occurs in July and August, so the months of May and June see little if any wait time to get a seat at a favorite restaurant, there are fewer powerboats on the lakes, and good chances abound to see fawns and nesting birds. Looking ahead, there is always lots going on during the summer months to entertain the family. There are lumberjack shows in Woodruff and Hayward, Crandon comes alive with the roar of off-road races, the beat of a drum can be heard at Native American events in Lac du Flambeau, Hayward and elsewhere.
Minocqua and Superior will dip their paddles into the lake water to the beat of a different style of drum – heard during a dragon boat race. Running feet, spinning spokes and the cheers heard at a finish line speak loudly of foot and bike races. Depending on the family make-up and desires, there are waterparks, museums, wildlife parks, zip lines, golf and mini-golf courses, county fairs, and a host of other activities and venues to enjoy. There are many reasons to visit the Northwoods, including the fact that it’s relatively close to your home – ideal for multiple affordable trips in a season or two!

Fat Bike Racers Ready to Zip the Trails MINOQUA – Dozens turned out for last year’s Rip, Zip and Sip Fatbike Race in Minocqua, despite the nation in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the pandemic easing, the Lakeland Area Mountain Biking Organization (LAMBO) is planning for a comparable turnout, if not more, for the seventh annual event on Saturday, Feb. 19. The race will be held at the Zip Mountain Bike Trail, located just south of Minocqua off U.S. Highway 51. For those unfamiliar with the connotations of the event title, “Rip” stands for the bike race, the “Zip” is for the nearby zip line (race entry includes one free zip line on the Northwoods Zip Lines race tower) and “Sip” is for the Hinterland brew that those 21 and older will partake after the races. Riders have two options: one lap around the 7 km course or three laps required for the challenging 21 km race. They will experience single-track and epic flow trails, all expertly groomed for winter fat biking. The ride will be fast and flowy, with some berms, downhills and a few challenging climbs. There will be music, food, raffles and a giant fire ring with lots of room to spread out. There also will be a changing tent for individual use. Masks and hand sanitizers will be available. Masks will be required in the set-up area.

As a bonus, there will be another sweet class --- this one on honey production. Be sure to visit the Maple Café for breakfast and lunch specials. There, you will also find delicious maple caramel cinnamon rolls, maple elephant ears, maple cheesecake, cream puffs and hot maple apple crisp and other tasty treats. Take a driving tour of local sugar bushes to see where this popular treat originates and how sap becomes maple syrup. Trees require that mixed bag of weather — temperatures above freezing during the day and below freezing at night — to coax sap into flowing. That usually happens toward the end of February. Maple syrup collection continues until the trees are in bud and spring is well under way.
Each year contestants from Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine and New York submit their maple syrup samples for judging. Entries are evaluated on density, clarity, flavor, color and containers. A portion of the proceeds from Maple Syrup Fest will benefit area high school graduates through education scholarships. Don’t forget to get a raffle ticket for the grand prize drawing. For more information and details on Maple Syrup Fest visit phelpswi.us. Phelps, the official Maple Syrup Capital of Wisconsin, is located on the eastern end of North Twin Lake, less than 20 minutes north and east of Eagle River via Highway 17 in Vilas County.
Fun Facts about Maple Syrup Did you know that maple syrup was one of Wisconsin’s first agricultural products? It takes 10 whole gallons of sap to make 1 quart of syrup. Maple syrup is actually good for your health – it increases red blood cell growth and is proven to treat digestive disorders. Humans aren’t the only ones that take advantage of maple trees – squirrels tap the trees with their 2 front teeth and drink the sap straight from the tree. Not all maple syrup is the same; flavor can be affected by the tree tapped, weather and climate, and different production methods. Don’t just buy one bottle – try out different maple syrup products for a variety of sweet tastes. Wisconsin produces an average of 74,000 gallons of maple syrup a year.

Junker Sled Races Provide a Different Kind of Buzz THREE LAKES – We were intrigued when we first learned of the upcoming Junker Sled Weekend in Three Lakes. The lyrics to the cover of Royals (as sung by the clown Puddles Pity Party) came to mind: “And we’ll never be royals It don’t run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain’t for us
We crave a different kind of buzz”
The different kind of buzz is the sound of “beaters” – snowmobiles valued at no more than $500 – that will be racing on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Snowmobile Park, which is part of Don Burnside Park in Three Lakes. The entrance to the race is just outside of town off County Highway A. Racing starts at 10 a.m.
Northcentral Region
The drive behind creating Junker was to offer competitive fun for snowmobile enthusiasts starting at a very amateur skill level. And, might we add, those with limited funds and time. Their website describes this loosely-formed group and what you might expect to see: “A perfect mix of competition, hilarity, and unreliability (sleds only; the people are great),” it says. “You’ll have a hard time finding another competitive event with more racers working on each other’s machine.”
The main Junker race will have multiple heats as determined by racer turnout, a Last Chance Qualifying race or two, and the final race. There are separate races for women participants, youth and those 50 years and older. The 2up races are a crowd favorite. The racers will do multiple laps on a roughly half-mile track with left and right turns. There are banked corners, small jumps and rough terrain. The layout varies each year. Those wishing to race can do so by e-mailing junkersledreg@gmail.com. For more information, visit their website, junkersled.com.

Merrill Hosts Racers with an Appetite for Action MERRILL – The Ice Masters are at it again in Merrill. Each winter the Merrill Ice Draggers transform a stretch of ice on Lake Alexander off Council Grounds State Park into four lanes of 1/8th-mile long drag strips. Each Saturday in February muscle cars, dragsters and trucks will line up in head-to-head competition, and when the Christmas tree blinks green, they’re off in a flash. With a January race already in the record books, the other dates are Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26. Races start at noon. Spectator admission and parking on the ice is free (on land requires a state park sticker). Access Lake Alexander from Council Grounds Drive (not Forest Dr.) and follow signs to the boat landing. For updates check out their website, merrillicedrags.com.
Northcentral Region
The club notes they host “the fastest 1/8th mile drag auto racing on ice in the world.” The world record -- 141.6 MPH and 5.431 ET in 660 feet – was set on this track!
26
The event includes more than 15 race classes, including classic muscle cars, high-speed “rail” cars, souped up trucks and SUVs, even family cars and minivans. An average of 50 racers compete for cash, prizes and trophies. Drivers come from as far away as Ohio, Indiana and Iowa to race. The track setup is a hybrid of Mother Nature and man-made technology. It features frozen snow banks separating the two drag tracks, a modern timing system, a two-story race control tower and the Christmas tree. Some of the racers run “nailies” -- tires with 3,000 to 3,5000 dry wall screws protruding from the tires for the absolute best ice traction. Club volunteers actually plow four lanes at season start; rotating the two tracks so they can flood and freeze the battered starting box once weekend races are done.

Polish Off a Day of Fun at a Gem of a Ski Hill BRYANT -- If you are looking for winter fun in the Antigo area, travel about 15 miles northeast to Kettlebowl Ski Area. The ski hill is one of Langlade County’s inexpensive winter gems, offering downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. It’s an excellent place to learn how to ski, especially for families with children. The non-profit facility is run by the Langlade County Ski Club and by other volunteers. The ski hill has a vertical drop of 325 feet. It features five rope tows and seven ski runs, including a “baby” hill. Snowboarders are welcomed, too. The XC ski trail is 2.7 miles long, with one loop along the Ice Age Trail. Kettlebowl Ski Hill is open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. when there is enough naturally made snow. Lift tickets cost $5 for adults, $3 for high school students, $2 for kids 6-12, and free for kids 5 and under. Antigo Ski rents skis/boots/snowboards when the hill is open: $20 for those 6 years old to adult and $15 for those 5 and under years of age. After an afternoon of skiing or snowboarding, step inside the cozy chalet for coffee, cocoa, soup, hot dogs and other tresyd. The chalet, built in 2005, has indoor restrooms. There is also a snowmobile trail for riders to access the chalet. The facility is located at N6875 State Highway 52, Bryant. For more information, go to langladecounty.org or check out Kettlebowl Ski Hill & Cross-Country Trails on Facebook.

Bar Stool Races Provide a Zany Fun Day DRUMMOND – The most outdoor fun you can have – on a bar stool? We’ve been there and laughed with the other spectators at the Drummond Bar Stool Races, where competitors on bar stool-mounted skis compete head-to-head down the man-made hill. The event’s full name is Bar Stool Races and Chili Feed, so you know you won’t go hungry on Saturday, Feb. 19 when they celebrate the “22nd-ish” annual event with a special race of champions from the past two decades. It all takes place on Brian Miller Hill, behind the Black Bear Inn on Hwy. 63 in Drummond. Sponsored by the Sno-Jacks Snowmobile Club as a club fundraiser, there will be chili and brats, raffles and drinks for purchase. class racing. New this year is a spectator class. The bar stools can be unique as “accessories” are added on. The best of the best will get an award for creativity. There are few rules in this event, but all bar stools must be mounted on skis and the rider’s feet must not touch the ground when going downhill. Each competitor has a “pusher” who gives the rider a mighty shove at the start signal. Some riders don’t make it to the finish line and tumble none-so-gracefully to the packed snow to the sympathetic cheers of the crowd. Dress warm as this is a mid-February event in northern Wisconsin when the temps can be quite cold. A roaring bonfire will warm you up in any event, and you can duck into the restaurant too.

Lake Gogebic is a Snowmobiling Paradise By Mary Beth DeFazio In most parts of the country, getting dumped on with three feet of snow in two days would give folks a good reason to stay inside and hibernate. However, in the Upper Peninsula’s Big Snow Country, it’s a welcome sight as it signals adventure and good times are on the horizon.
Voted one of the Top Snowmobile Destinations by Snowmobiler Magazine, this region receives 200 to 300 inches of snow each year complemented by some of the best-groomed trails and gorgeous scenery on virtually every turn. Trails officially open Dec. 1 and won’t close until April 1. While January and February are prime season, some of the best riding and lodging options are attainable during those shoulder periods.
Hub of UP trails
What’s exceptionally nice about the Western UP is that it’s centrally located in the heart of Big Snow Country and has been coined the snowmobile “hub,” as there are many choices of great rides whether you fancy a weekend getaway, a week of family fun, or just an overnighter. There are more than 600 miles of groomed trails that offer riders the opportunity to experience winding forest trails, scenic overlooks, railroad grades, waterfalls

U.P. Michigan Region
No matter what trails they travel or how much they ride, all those who know the Lake Gogebic area in the Western U.P. of Michigan have one wish in common – let it snow! When you enter the Lake Gogebic area you have entered every snowmobiler’s utopia. The “sledhead” culture is intense here, and locals and visitors alike wouldn’t have it any other way. In these parts, it’s not
uncommon to find more snowmobiles than cars at the local gas station or restaurant.

and bridges, hills, lakes, and logging roads – all in a day’s ride. Lake Gogebic itself is less than 20 miles from Lake Superior, Porcupine Mountains and Lake of the Clouds. Lake Superior graciously provides the moisture, and the Porcupine Mountains provide the lift to the moist air that brings down that wonderful lake effect snow that lasts for days and days! There are some trails around Lake Gogebic where you feel you are nowhere. You can turn off your engine, listen to nature, and soak in the beauty of this pristine region. Also, it’s only on Lake Gogebic can you ring in the New Year twice as this 18-mile long lake occupies two time zones. One will find plenty of dining and lodging on Lake Gogebic. On the north shore you can stop in Bergland Bay Bar, enjoy a wood-fire pizza at AJ’s Oven, fill up with gas at the Outpost, and have a choice of several lodging options. If you don’t own a sled, that’s not a problem as you’ll find Timberline Sports right on the north shore of Lake Gogebic.
Established Rides
U.P. Michigan Region
You can’t visit Lake Gogebic without riding the Lake Gogebic loop. Circling the lake on trails 1, 100, 13 and 8 will take you on a ride of about 72 picturesque miles. This is a good family ride as it’s not too challenging and there most likely will be wildlife. There are several restaurants located right on the lake including Fishtails on the west side of the lake and the Root Cellar on the east shore. On the south end, you can always find a good time at Gogebic Lodge, and on the north shore is the iconic Hoop and Holler and the newly opened AJ’s Oven, which is a lakefront restaurant featuring wood fired pizzas and Chicago style sandwiches.

One of the most popular rides on a sunny winter day is what’s known as “Lake da Lake,” which takes riders from Lake Gogebic to Lake of the Clouds. This tour starts on the north shore and follows Trail 1 north toward White Pine to Silver City. In White Pine you will find Konteka which is a good place to stop off and get a bite to eat, fill up for gas, and catch up with other riders. Continuing Trail 1 north to Silver City, then west to the Porcupine Mountains and Lake of the Clouds for an amazing view. You can head back the same way, or on the way back down from Lake of the Clouds, you can pick up Trail 11 South and follow that to 102. Follow 102 back down to Lake Gogebic where you can visit your favorite stop and catch up with friends. One favorite destination for both the diehard rider as well as the seasoned novice is the “Copper Harbor Cruise,” which you can make as either a day trip or an overnighter. From Lake Gogebic, head north on Trail 13 out of Bergland to Rockland and Greenland. There you pick up Trail 3 – known as the Bill Nichols Trail, popular for riders as it’s scenic and you’ll also cross the famous Firesteel Trestles. These former railroad trestles soar hundreds of feet over deep gorges. Continuing into Houghton, take Trail 3 to Trail 132 and into Copper Harbor. Gogebic Area Groomers do a great job of not only maintaining trails, but also in updates on the trails so that guests know what to expect before they arrive. You can follow Gogebic Area Grooming on Facebook and on their website at gogebicareagrooming.com. U.P. We Go: To Exciting Hillclimbs SOUTH RANGE & IRONWOOD – There’s nothing that tops the thrills and spills those that accompany the snowmobile hillclimbs in the U.P. of Michigan. Another season of hillclimb ac-
tion organized by the Mid America Snow and Terran Expert Racers (MASTERS) organization is providing lots of entertainment for spectators. For the weekend of Feb. 5-6, the series will be at South Range for the Winternationals Snowmobile/Snow Bike Hillclimbs. Whealkate Bluff has been re-done to make it even more challenging. At last summer’s motorcycle hill climb, only one rider out of 100 attempts made it to the top! Another upcoming event is the Snowmobile/Snow Bike Hillclimb on Feb. 19-20 at Copper Peak, just north of Ironwood. It’s been 10 years since the MASTERS ran a hillclimb at Copper Peak. It’s being promoted as the largest such event east of the Mississippi. The gates will open at 7:30 a.m. CT, with competition to start at 9 a.m. CT on both days. Concessions and souvenirs will be on-site at Copper Peak during the event. The qualifying rounds will be Saturday, Feb. 19, along with running of the Children’s 120 & 250 cc, Vintage 1, Vintage II and Junior Finals. Then on Sunday, Feb. 20, events will feature the finals in the Pro Stock, Pro Mod, Women’s, Spirit, and Snow Bike.
U.P. Michigan Region
The goal is simple: make it to the top of the extremely steep Copper Peak hill while zig-zagging around gates. This event will send its Pro Stock, Pro Mod, and Spirit King of the Hill winners, along with the Queen of the Hill title, to the World Championship in Jackson, WY.

Later that month, the MASTERS Top Dog Terra-X schedule dips down into Wisconsin. It will be at the Iron County Fairgrounds in Saxon on Saturday, Feb. 26. Terra X Racing is a form of snow oval/snocross racing and consists of time trials with the top 3 advancing per class. For the more skilled riders, there is a Pro Stock Open and Pro Mod Open class for cash. The final race will be the Vintage Enduro, which is for 1999 and older 500cc sleds. The MASTERS season concludes with the Terra-X Top Dog Championship on March 5 at Greenland. Visit mastersracing.net for information on registration, ticket prices and other information.
