Editor’s Column Time to Explore the North Thoughts of visiting the Northwoods may be playing through your head. Thinking of the great fishing, clean beaches, and the fresh, unpolluted air to inhale. We have thousands of lakes in the Northwoods, unequal in number anywhere in the U.S. Among the memories of your last visit may have been sitting around a campfire, waterskiing, visiting the wildlife zoos, spending the day at a festival, attending a play, playing miniature golf and racing go-karts. The Northwoods is ready for you and your family to visit. From privately-owned facilities, to town, county, state and federal parks and campgrounds, they’re clean, accessible and in many cases,

equipped with Wi-Fi. (Kids, quiet down, they’ve got Wi-Fi!) Best of all, you can reach these favorite Northwoods areas on a tank of gas or less. You spend less time on the road, and more time relaxing or enjoying activities such as hiking and mountain biking (have we got trails!), golfing, shopping antique and specialty shops, going on a train ride and much more. Now all you have to do is pick some dates and make reservations for quality family time in the land they call Up North! Dean Acheson, Editor

Get Up. Get Out. Get Moving! Unique & Fun Attractions in the Northwoods
6
June 2022 | UpNorthAction.com
Add a dash of adventure and thrills to your next Northwoods trip this summer. In this selection, we’ll take you to soaring heights, bring you back to terra firma, and finally take you underground. Listed is a sample of the many attractions that will get the adrenaline flowing.
Up in the Clouds
Capture the magnificent landscapes that only the Upper Peninsula of Michigan can provide with a trip to the International Copper Peak Ski Flying Hill and Recreation Complex, northeast of Ironwood. The mammoth structure rises some 241 feet above the crest of Chippewa Hill. Thousands of visitors each year enjoy riding the chairlift 819 feet to the crest of the hill. Then the 18-story elevator ride takes about 55 seconds to reach the observation deck. Climbing the final 60 feet of stairs to the top starting gate allows the visitor to “experience” the feelings of the ski flyer about to launch himself down the 469-foot inrun. The view overlooking Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park is truly impressive.
Ziplines
Not quite up in the clouds but nor on earth are the ziplines we all love. Northwoods Zip Line, Aerial Trek, Argo ATV, and Kayak River Adventure Tours in Minocqua has an extensive zip line canopy tour, aerial trekking tour, kids zip line tour, Argo ATV tour, kayak river tour, wilderness group dynamics, and more. All tours are guided. They have a total of 13 zip lines, 14 aerial trekking obstacles, 4 adventure bridges, 2 zips that go over a lake, side-by-side dual race zip, and more.
Photo: Northwoods Zipline
Trollhaugen’s Adventure Park in Dresser has an aerial challenge course and zip line park tour. The park provides the thrill of playing on a giant, floating playground. Imagine climbing trees, hanging from tires, and swinging on ropes just like when you were a kid, but on a far bigger scale and creative environment. The aerial challenge course offers 7 different circuits and 5 levels of difficulty. The zip line tour offers 6 ziplines across multiple platforms, and also features a dual-zip for tandem thrills with a friend.

Drivers, Start your Engines!
Go-karting is one sport in which kids can outrace their parents. And they don’t need a driver’s license. Rock their world by taking them to Holiday Acres Recreational Park in Minocqua. Holiday Acres boasts three excellent tracks, including the original Super Track. Each track has different features where the Mario Andretti set – young and older -- can zoom around hairpin curves, carve a path up the hills and zip across bridges as they race friends and family. Rocking W Stable and Kartway theme park in Eagle River give families the most fun together this summer. Kartway offers go-kart racing, Naskart racing, slick track (they also have a zip line). Big Track is their most competitive track, a circle-8 with varying karts suited for both double and single riders. Ride the Slick Track and you’ll be a pro at drifting before you know it. Head over to the oval track if you’re a real speed demon or a NASCAR-wannabe. Mini-“Jeeps” suit those not quite ready for full size go-karts.

Tubing & Paddling Adventures
You’ve seen them sliding down a hill in the winter. Now see them in the summer! We’re speaking of inner tubes, and they’re an essential part of floating down the river. But that’s the mild side of fun; wild is when you hit the whitewater. In Vilas County, Hawks Nest Outfitters will rent you a tube, kayak or raft. They will also take you to the launch point on the Wisconsin River and pick you up at the takeout. A paddle on the scenic Namekagon River can be found at Jack’s Canoe & Tube Rental in Trego. In addition to rentals, including kayaks, they provide full shuttle service to all of the Namekagon and most of the St. Croix River landings. Jack’s offers delivery and pickup service to most local lakes. Step it up a notch by riding the whitewater roller-coaster, including the rapids on the Peshtigo and Menominee rivers in Marinette County. Among outfitters offering a canoe, raft or kayak ride are Kosir’s Rapid Rafts, Thornton’s Rafting Resort ad Campground, and Wildman Adventure Resort. Another suggestion is Wausau Whitewater Park in Wausau where a dam provides a constant flow of water regardless of weather. You and a team of 20 friends and family can also take part in the annual Minocqua Dragon Boat Festival races set for Aug. 20.
Down, Down, Down We Go
Lastly, we take you underground to experience what it’s like to be in a once-working mine shaft. At Adventure Mine near Greenland in the U.P. you can experience copper mining as it was in the 1800s. You will traverse underground wearing a hardhat with headlamp. Four guided tours are offered: a 45-minute underground walk, an 80-minute underground hike, a three-hour underground tour that includes rappelling down an 80foot shaft, and a six-hour long excursion to the second level of the mine. See large stopes and in-place copper specimens, as well as other features and mining remnants.

Explore Marinette County by ATV/UTV Sprawling Marinette County – known for its breathtaking 14 major waterfalls – is also home to a network of wide, well-groomed, award-winning ATV/UTV trails that offers over 300 miles of riding pleasure. And, Marinette County’s forests total 230,000 acres, giving everyone room to roam. Most of the Marinette Trail System is open year round, with the exception of early spring when trails close to protect them from erosion. The majority of the county’s year-round ATV/UTV trails are located in the northern half of the county. Trails run from Lake Hilbert in the far northwestern corner of the county east to the Michigan border and south to the Peshtigo River State Forest. Trailhead locations: Three park-n-ride locations serve the north end of the trail system: in the Town of Dunbar via Hwy. 8, north of Pembine via Hwy. 141 and Barlow Lake Road, and in Athelstane on Eagle River Road via County A.
No matter which loop or trail you ride, you won’t be disappointed. The system accesses county forestlands as well as a few of the county’s waterfalls. You’ll ride rolling hills, twisty trails, sandy flats and forest roads. You can choose to cover as much ground as possible, or pick a backcountry loop and explore it at a more leisurely pace. McClintock Park on the west side of the trail system is a good place to start. Located just off Parkway Road (Cty I), this 320acre county park offers parking, 10 rustic campsites, a picnic area
and three bridges over the Peshtigo River. The falls are a series of cascades under the bridges that connect smaller islands within the park. Stately pines frame hardwoods that are particularly colorful in autumn. ATVs are not permitted in the day use areas, however a parking lot for ATVs is available across the road from the day use area. Riders camping at the park can access hundreds of miles of ATV trails in Marinette and Florence counties.
ATV riders who enjoy primitive camping can also take advantage of the county’s policy of allowing camping anywhere along the trail system in the county forest for up to two weeks at a time. For more information, contact Marinette County Parks at 715732-7530. With the seven-mile trail addition near McClintock and 38 miles near Pembine, the Homestead Trail offers breathtaking vistas, sharp curves, steep hills and over nearly 300 miles of ATV excitement. The west side trails are a stacked pair of large loops, one to the north and one to the south. The common trail – the one that splits the two loops – is known locally at the “Bunny Run.” These are large loops, so as you play keep an eye on the gas gauge. There are no fuel stops in the southern loop; the northern loop offers gas stations in both Goodman and Dunbar. In this neck of the woods, it’s a good idea to carry extra fuel with you. North of Hwy. 8, a third, smaller loop tracks north into Florence County as it circles the Dunbar State Natural Area back to Dunbar. The final leg of your Marinette County adventure trails east from Dunbar on a series of forest roads through Pembine, all the way to the Menominee River and the Michigan border. For more information, including lodging and attractions, contact Marinette County Tourism, (715) 735-6681 or visit therealnorth.com.

Relive the ‘Resort Era’ at Antique & Classic Boat Show MINOCQUA – The Minocqua Antique & Classic Boat Show will once again delight spectators when owners of these classic beauties tour Minocqua Chain of Lakes on Friday and Saturday, June 17-18. As an added bonus, the partnering Minocqua Lions Club will bring in a top-rated band for Saturday’s musical entertainment.
The show will be headquartered at Torpy Park (new location), downtown Minocqua, where piers will accommodate some two dozen wooden boats. The public is invited to walk the docks, view the interiors of the finely-crafted boats, and talk with the owners. (While the owners will be cruising the lakes, no rides will be available for the public due to liability concerns.) There will also be a display of 1960s-70s classic fiberglass trihull runabouts on the park grounds. In all, there will be some 60 boats – large and small – either in the water or on land, says event director Marc Toigo of Minocqua Antique & Classic Boat Show LLC.
Friday’s boat show hours are noon to 7 p.m. There will be food (including a traditional fish fry starting at 3 p.m.), beverages, merchandise and clothing available for purchase. The Northwoods favorite singing duo Bret & Frisk will play from 3-6 p.m. Their music ranges from a few hits of the 1950s all the way up to present day alternative rock/folk. Captains of the boats will participate in a boat parade at 7:45 p.m. Friday, during the Min-Aqua Bats water ski show’s intermission. Saturday’s boat show hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Coyote Wild will perform from 3-7 p.m. Coyote Wild performs an eclectic mix of both classic and current rock and country with the raw and gritty edge you would expect from a seasoned band, and a female front line that rocks the room with their intoxicating harmonies, and electrifying performance. Their set list is a diverse mix of classic rock and contemporary country, meaning there is something for everyone. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the “Go-To” country rock band in the Midwest!

These resort-era vessels – the likes of Chris Craft, Gar Wood, Century, Hutchinsin -- will be coming from all corners of the upper Midwest for this annual event. The wooden runabouts with their powerful inboard engines, churning out a soul-stirring rumble, harken back to the 1930s and 40s when they ruled the waters in the Northwoods resort communities.
The Minocqua Lions will be providing the food, beverages and live music both days. The event will raise money for local charitable organizations.

SAYNER – A variety of terrain and maybe a couple of surprises will greet mountain bikers who take part in the InSayner Adventure Bike Race in Vilas County on Saturday, June 11. The Lakeland Area Mountain Bike Organization (LAMBO) is the event sponsor.
Route options are the “Sayner 25ish” and the “InSayner50ish.” Give or take a few miles, that denotes the mileage of each. The short route will be well marked; the longer one, less so, the organizers say. A GPS unit is required in any case. Riders will begin the race at 10 a.m.
The race course through the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest follows snowmobile trails, sweet stretches of downhills, an old ski hill run, logging roads, gravel roads and a small stretch of blacktop. We can’t tell you what the “surprises” are because, well, then they won’t be a surprise.
There is no on-site registration and the field is capped at 100 riders. The annual race gets underway at 10 a.m. from the Plum Lake Community Center in Sayner. Spectators are welcomed. For more information or to register, visit lamboriders.org/ events/the-insayner.

No matter how good a log roller is, he or she will end up in the water eventually. It’s a cold swim before those first few shows of the season.
Logging Lore Comes Alive at Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows WOODRUFF -- Weeks before the official start of summer, Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows begins preparing for the upcoming season. 2021 will mark the 40th year that Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows has been entertaining area visitors on Woodland Lake in downtown Woodruff.
“When you are climbing that pole at record speed, the last thing you want on your mind is its stability,” says Cassidy Scheer, world champion pole climber. The log dogs on which the lumberjacks stand and swing razor sharp axes in the event called the underhand chop are checked for structural safety. The specially turned cedar logs used for the logrolling and boom-run events are pulled out of storage and replaced if necessary. The gear and equipment used by the lumberjacks are also checked for safety. Steel-toed boots, leather leg chaps, climbing belts and gaffs (the spikes on the side of a climber’s shoes) must be in tiptop shape to protect the performers. They inspect and repair the special leather guards that are placed over a portion of saw blades
In addition to the lumberjack gear, the show site is prepared for the throng of summer guests who arrive with the warm weather. Bleachers, walkways and the handicap ramp are checked and the landscaping is refreshed. How about all the logs the lumberjacks saw and chop? Over 20 tons of aspen logs are hauled to the site throughout the summer. Logs need to be uniform in diameter and stripped of bark – the same guidelines adhered to in the Lumberjack World Championships.
“Logrolling and the boom-run are pretty darn cold events for us those first few shows of the season,” explains Zac Tom, show manager. “That lake doesn’t really warm up until the beginning of July. No matter how good you are at these events, you’re going to end up in the water at some point.”

A spin-off of the famous Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows that began in Hayward, the Woodruff show features the same world-class athletes in a performance that is identical to the Hayward venue. Preparing the site for the summer performances involves maintenance to guarantee the safety of performers, as well as guests. The climbing poles that rise 60 to 90 feet into the air are inspected and the pads are secured in place.

The season starts Memorial Day weekend and runs through Labor Day weekend. The Lumberjacks are eager to entertain and display the athleticism they’ve worked hard to keep tuned during the winter months. With everything checked out, cleaned up, and the staff eager to get another season underway, there is one element of the shows that cannot be controlled. That is the temperature of the water in Woodland Lake or Lake Hayward.

Discover the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Polk County
The Polk County portion of the trail leads hikers through the glacial features of St. Croix Falls, onto the Gandy Dancer multi-use state trail, past the basaltic outcroppings and glacial formations of Straight Lake State Park, through vistas of massive white pine overlooking McKenzie Creek, and into several county forests. Interstate State Park is the trail’s western terminus, serving as the start or finish for those who hike the entire statewide trail, whether in one go or in segments. Nearby St. Croix Falls, which calls itself the City of Trails, features other local intersecting trails. The city was the first in western Wisconsin to be designated by trail officials as a Trail Community, offering economic development and health benefits.
Key glacial features include eskers (narrow glacial ridges) in St. Croix Falls and along Long Lake, a tunnel channel carved by glacial meltwater that the Straight River follows through the park of the same name, and numerous kettles (mounds) and hummocks (depressions). Eagles and trumpeter swans may be spotted in Straight Lake Park.
The trail in Polk County was built by crews of local volunteers supplemented by others from across the Midwest. Segments of the trail are maintained volunteer labor. For more information about group hikes and other trail events, check the Facebook page of the Ice Age Trail Alliance - Indianhead chapter. Resources for planning a hike are available at www. iceagetrail.org. The Polk County Information Center has Ice Age merchandise, including the guidebook, atlas, t-shirts, pins/medallions and patches for sale.

Don’t Miss a Highlight of the Summer – a Lumberjack Show HAYWARD – It was 40 years ago Fred Scheer and his brother, Robert, created a new form of family entertainment, a lumberjack show, for northern Wisconsin visitors. The two brothers and their four sisters had spent numerous summers as kids balancing and rolling on the logs on Lake Hayward in the bay of North Wisconsin Lumber Company. Their summer fun trained them to become fierce competitors in the logrolling event (birling) of the Lumberjack World Championships (LWC) held in Hayward every July. The young Scheers expanded their activities and became skillful at the boom run and pole climbing, as well as other events that were part of the LWC. In 1981, the two brothers established the original Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and used their lumberjack skills to entertain area tourists. More than a demonstration, the show features a competition between two lumberjack teams as they do 10 different events, including logrolling, pole climbing and crosscut saw. Cheering the teams on gets the crowd involved in the show and down home humor has everybody chuckling.
For all the years Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows has been in Hayward, it continues to draw crowds. One might say that a visit to northern Wisconsin isn’t complete without seeing a Scheer’s Lumberjack Show.
Northwest Region
The original venue for the show in 1981 was a small dock on the shore of Lake Hayward, behind what was then Windmill Square. The show’s lumberjacks delighted small crowds and it soon became apparent the production needed more space. With encouragement from Tony Wise, the legendary Hayward promoter, Fred and Robert Scheer moved the show to its present location, Lumberjack Village. After that the Woodruff location opened up.

Fred is now the sole owner of Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows and the Lumberjack Village. Training young athletes to be lumberjacks is still a fulfilling role for Fred. Through the years many lumberjacks have come, performed and moved on to other careers. Numerous world champion logrollers, pole climbers and boom-runners had their start as apprentices in Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and the cast has always included world champion lumberjacks. A world champion log roller himself, Fred occasionally delights audiences by personally participating in a show.

Book a Wisconsin Great Northern
Train Ride
Whether you’re a dedicated train rider or wondering what a train ride is like, this is the year to hop aboard the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad. After a two-year hiatus (due to COVID) the Wisconsin Great Northern is back with some special surprises to delight passengers. The family-operated excursion train is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Among the new features is the introduction of America’s only all-private dining aboard the “dinner train.” Accommodating up to six people, each enclosed dining room is especially suitable for birthday and anniversary celebrations. A favorite of many, the “bed & breakfast train” returns with all firstclass accommodations. Like other trips, this one travels at a leisurely pace as it makes its way through farm fields, deep woods and along the scenic Namekagon River.
Northwest Region
Their renowned “family pizza train” will now feature pizzas made fresh onboard the train. Wisconsin Great Northern also has other train rides, including the “wine & cheese train,” and later in the year, the “Santa pizza train.”

The lull in luring visitors the past two years has allowed them to complete a major track improvement and upgrades to many of their cars. They are also putting the finishing touches on the complete rebuild of the Mark Twain Zephyr, a gleaming Art Deco passenger train from 1935. The Mark Twain Zephyr was one of nine stainless steel streamlined trains built by the Budd Company for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy in the 1930s. These shovelnose trains forever changed train travel as they ushered in a new era of passenger railroading in North America. You can learn more about the project at the website, marktwainzephyr. com. The train depot is located four miles north of Spooner along U.S. 53-63. For more information and reservations (required) call 715-6353200 or visit spoonertrainride.com.

There’s a cluster of waterfalls just north of Ironwoods that brings lots of visitors each spring and summer. Known for its spectacular waterfalls, idyllic beaches, scenic hiking trails and tranquil campground, the Black River Harbor Recreation Area is a popular destination throughout the year. (Note: Due to road work, the campground is closed until July 8, 2022. There is still full access to the harbor, beach area, suspension bridge, and the waterfalls.)
U.P. Michigan Region
Some 20 minutes of travel on the Black River Road will bring you to perhaps the most visited falls -- Great Conglomerate, Potawatomi, Gorge, Sandstone and Rainbow. Potawatomi and Gorge viewing platforms are only a short distance on a paved trail from the parking area.
Rainbow Falls is the last of the falls on the Black River before the river enters Lake Superior. Named for the mist-created rainbows that form over the river from the 40-foot drop over the rocks, Rainbow Falls has an observation deck but does require about a half-mile hike and down a stairway to reach the viewing platform. Capturing the rainbows that form over this waterfall makes this one of the most alluring and frequently photographed of these five Black River waterfalls. Venturing too close to the river and its waterfalls can be dangerous, especially in the spring when water is high and the ground and rocks are slippery. Be careful!

Another 20 tagged fish (walleye, bass, perch and pike) each carry a $250 reward. To be eligible, anglers must purchase a fishing contest button for $5, available at any Lake Gogebic area business, prior to the catch. The same button can be used to qualify for the chamber’s monthly fishing contest.
Monthly Fishing Contest There is another fishing contest for anglers plying the waters of Lake Gogebic. The chamber’s monthly fishing contest offers anglers a $25 chamber gift certificate if they catch the largest walleye, perch, smallmouth bass and northern pike during the month. The “chamber bucks” are redeemable at chamber member businesses. Successful anglers can bring their fish to one of the participating businesses on the lake to have it registered. Be sure to register your fish even if it isn’t a whopper, because it may be the winning fish for that month. Fishing is not the only recreational activity visitors will enjoy. Kayaking is popular on the lake and on several bays and streams
