A Rich History

The history of Phelps, Wisconsin, is inextricably intertwined with the fur trading and logging days of the 18th and 19th centuries, and with the tourism trade. Lac Vieux Desert was a crossroads for the fur trade and helped to draw the first business to the area in 1896. Learn about this and more with a visit to the Phelps Historical Museum, open May through October.

Nestled in the Forest Phelps is located 15 miles northeast of Eagle River, WI, in Vilas County. With a population of just over 1,500 people, this quiet town is nestled within the 650,000-acre Nicolet National Forest. And Ottawa National Forest is just two miles to the north in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Plans are underway to create a green space on the shore of North Twin Lake, the previous location of the infamous Big Store. This space will enhance the outdoor offerings of the area and provide a beautiful, functional area for community events, weddings, reunions, or lounging on a warm summer day. Even bigger and better steps forward are on the horizon as our Town Board and local organizations work together to ensure a successful future for this small community.

e c I e h t On Get Hooked on Ice Fishing You can’t beat ice fishing in Phelps! Many of our larger lakes have resorts and restaurants right on the shore that welcome fishermen and families year-round. You can find great views and great fishing activity on North Twin Lake, South Twin Lake, Big Sand Lake, Long Lake, Lac Vieux Desert, and Smoky Lake, to name a few. Phelps is home to two ice fishing tournaments every year, one on Big Sand Lake and one on North Twin Lake. These tournaments are a fun way to get out on the ice and get to know your fellow fishermen better, or if you are new to ice fishing and just want to give it a try come to Phelps the third weekend in January. This is Wisconsin’s free ice fishing weekend every year with no license required!

Phelps Maple Syrup Fest April 10, 2021 8 am–4 pm Celebrate the Wisconsin heritage of making pure maple syrup at this unique festival, held each April. This familyfriendly event is free to attend and full of educational fun. Take a self-guided driving tour of local sugarbushes to see where the trees that produce this tasty treat and learn how sap becomes syrup. Then stop by the Phelps Chamber of Commerce to purchase apparel to commemorate the fun event. Maple Syrup Fest typically attracts over 4,000 people and continues to grow and evolve. Find all things maple syrup in Phelps this April!

Music on the Lake Looking for a relaxing evening during your summer stay in the Northwoods? Boat into Phelps and enjoy the live musical acts that will be performing on the bandstand on the shore of North Twin Lake several evenings this summer. Phelps Scarecrow Fest

This fall event, held mid-September every year on the shore of North Twin Lake, provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy the autumn colors in Phelps. Try your hand at pumpkin chuckin’ – flinging a pumpkin at the target in North Twin Lake with a giant sling shot – or get your vote in for the Homemade Wine Tasting Contest. Browse arts and crafts while enjoying a stroll through Scarecrow Alley, featuring the creative entries to the Scarecrow Contest. Kids will love the games and activities and the Live Scarecrow Contest! There is so much going on at Scarecrow Fest, but our favorite part is the food! The day features booths from several local businesses and organizations where you can sample a unique appetizer, sandwich or dessert of your choosing. Fan favorites include caramel apples from the Women’s Club, handbreaded cheese curds at the local Lions Club booth, and the tastiest cream puffs ever. With over a dozen food vendors, you won’t leave hungry!

Phelps Historical Walking Tour

Our small town has a rich and interesting history. This tour will help you envision the bustling Phelps of the 1930s – a time when lumberjacks, retailers, and summer visitors from Chicago and other areas all mingled, worked, and played together. Well-known personalities like politician Homer Galpin, auto electronics pioneer Elmer Wavering, Lilian Kerr, J. C. Higgins, Dr. Lester Frankenthal, and Bishop Anderson were part of the Phelps community. On the walking tour, you’ll stop at the chemical plant, Christiansen Lumber Company, Library, company houses, the depot, the Big Store, the band shell, the Christiansen home, Town Hall, the opera house, the theater, the Chevrolet garage, Congregational Church, the Northwoods Hospital and Catholic Church, and more!

Discover Adventure... Answer the Call of the forest... Did you know that nearly 75% of Phelps is national or state forest land? You may think that the trees and forests are just pretty scenery, but we know better in the Northwoods! We see them as even more countless adventures to be discovered!

Bird Watching

Bird watching may be a quiet hobby, but it can be an exciting one, especially in an area with nearly 400 different species! Any season can offer a rewarding and unique birding experience. The best part – this outdoor activity requires no skills or gear. (Although a pair of binoculars and a good bird book help.) From wild turkeys and great horned owls to the more delicate indigo buntings and warblers, your eyes and your ears will be delighted. And you can’t miss the magnificent bald eagles and large ospreys flying above.

Wildlife

Although a slightly less common sight, it’s quite easy to catch a glimpse of any number of wild animals. You can spot them through the trees while driving the country roads or hiking the forests. Watch for whitetail deer, red fox, otter, black bear, and more. Just remember – they are wild animals and shouldn’t be approached. Enjoy the chance to see them in their natural habitat from afar.

In the Woods! FOREST FACTS: • The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest boasts of more than 1.5 million acres of trees and water for all to enjoy. • Beaver Creek Natural Area features large red pines and the Little Deerskin River.

Geocaching

Geocaching is another great example of how you can enjoy Mother Nature with very little equipment or expense. Phelps alone has dozens and dozens of hidden treasures throughout the public forests. So take a breath of fresh air, grab your GPS device, and go on a treasure-hunting adventure! Local Tips: • A traditional cache typically features a logbook but could hold a travel bug that is meant to move around the world. • Multi-cache involves 2 or more cache locations, with clues leading to the final logbook. • A mystery cache requires a puzzle to solve to get the correct coordinates. Sometimes these can be a puzzle to solve at the actual cache, which can be the most amusing!

• The 5,800-acre Blackjack Springs State Natural Area boasts of pines over 30 inches in diameter and 4 crystal clear springs.
