Life slowly, but surely, is getting back to a new “normal.” It was re-energizing getting back out (safely) to capture stories and to see the life pump back into businesses and attractions. During the pandemic 605 had a lot of changes and updates, and one was that our multimedia designer, Yany Avelar, was leaving. She not only has made 605’s brand stronger, but she has forever made an imprint on our business creative-wise, with her friendship, and as an amazing collaborator/mentor. With her final issue, we also introduce our new multimedia designer, Jordan Cushman. I finally got my full-time USD Coyote. Welcome, Jordan!

M U LTIMEDIA DES IG NER Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t just love to travel, I love to travel. Which is why The Outdoor Issue is one of my favorites, and it seems like the perfect issue to close out my chapter at 605. I’m so grateful to have been part of such a special team and to have made the friendships I have. The last (almost) two years of working at 605 Magazine have been incredible. I’ve had the opportunity to meet some unforgettable people, visit some amazing places, and overall just reconnect with South Dakota. It's taught me to appreciate the things, places, and people that surround me, and (in a cliché way) to “stop and smell the roses.” South Dakota has so many unique places to offer, and I can’t wait to take some time off to go exploring. Happy trails, everyone!

“You can go anywhere to get burgers, but we're trying to make it more unique,” said Nefu Mageo, the general manager of Hillside Resort.

With a restaurant, bar, convenience store, and a lodge, Hillside in Wentworth always has something going on. “Jeff and Debbie Luther, who are my in-laws, bought the place in 2015. I’ve been running it since then,” said Mageo. The Hillside is broken into two restaurants— The Hillside Steakhouse upstairs and Hemingway’s Hideaway on the bottom floor.

“Upstairs is really focused on fine dining since we serve steak and seafood,” explained Mageo. “Downstairs we have burgers, sandwiches, and typical things you could go to other bars and get. However we make ours a little different; we put a twist into it.” Taking a new approach on classic bar food, Mageo says that Hemingway’s Hideaway has been a long time coming for Hillside. “A lot of the people here want to sit outside. Before, it was hard for us to bring food up and down so we decided to put a kitchen in the basement,” said Mageo.

16 |

The namesake of the restaurant comes from the owner, Jeff ’s, love of Key West, FL and the historical figures that it has to offer. “My father-in-law goes to Key West every winter and there is a bar there named after Ernest Hemingway. He thought it would be cool to bring back some pieces of his story to South Dakota,” said Mageo. Being on Lake Madison the atmosphere of Hemingway’s Hideaway is amplified by its lakeside views.

“On a nice day people just want to come sit here and look at the lake. An advantage that we have is our view. You don’t find a place this big around here,” said Mageo.

One of Mageo’s more recent creations is the Cocorona, which has coconut rum, cranberry juice, and a splash of lime, served in a quarter-full Corona bottle.

While customers can taste traditional menu items like the Highway 34 Burger they can also experience something different, like The Big Key Fish Tacos with crispy fried cod, creamy coleslaw, and fresh pico de gallo, topped with house made spicy mayo aioli.

“People who came in wanting a Bud Lite come in now and this is all they drink,” said Mageo.

“A lot of people who come here want appetizers or quick bites, and that stuff is quick to make,” he said.

The Hillside also doubles as a popular event space. They host class reunions, birthday parties, wedding ceremonies, and other big events.

“We do an annual luau. We have dancers from out of state come and perform here. It is one of our biggest events of the year,” said Mageo.

He left off, “Business is starting to pick up now that the weather is getting warmer. Hopefully we will be back to what we were at last year soon.”

The luau is currently scheduled to happen on August 1.

Loyal customers have shown unwavering support of the Hillside throughout the COVID-19 crisis, Mageo says. Whether it be through calling orders in for contactless pick up or sitting six feet apart on the patio, customers have found ways to enjoy the restaurant.

BUR OA K D I N E R B y A l a n a S ny d e r

“We were open for about five weeks before we had to shut down,” recalled William “Bill” Nooney. The chef and co-owner of Bur Oak Diner in downtown Yankton had just opened the new restaurant’s doors on February 5 with co-owner and wife, Hannah. I was chatting with the pair at a table in the eatery as their kids played around us on the official reopening on June 15, which was a Monday.

304 W. 3RD ST., YANKTON

At one point Bill realized the opening day sign was still inside. “Oh, I should probably put that outside, huh,” he laughed. Right now Bur Oak is doing a take-out menu that is limited, and they're currently only serving lunch. This was a major bummer, as the restaurant’s breakfast menu looked epic. My eyes bulged when I saw the Breakfast Pot Pie on the normal menu. It has sausage, egg, and hash served in a puff pastry pie and is topped with country gravy. “It’s like a biscuits and gravy pot pie. It has a pie crust with all of your f illings—you know, your country gravy, your sausage, and your bacon,” Bill continued, “and then we took a crispy layer of hash browns and made that the top. There’s lots of nice textures in it.” Another best seller on the breakfast menu was the Desayuno Burrito with chorizo sausage, bacon, egg, hash, and avocado, topped with green chili.

“Mexican food is like my favorite thing on the planet,” he said with a smile. “A few years back, me and two of my friends almost opened a burrito truck … we ended up not doing that. [My wife and I] waited it out, we got this building, and now we’re doing this.” The former bar has been transformed into a modern venue filled with hanging plants and a visible refrigerator filled with fresh ingredients. Coffee bags are hung on the walls from the coffee company Bur Oak gets its beans from, which is Coffee King out of Sioux City. Hannah raved about it, and I had zero caffeine and was elated when she poured me a cup (or three).

A quaint eatery, the business offers a modern take on diner favorites, like the popular Cubano with ham, pork, pickles, and Swiss cheese. Bill brought me that and the Western Burger with bacon, cheddar, barbecue, and onion rings. What Bill didn’t know is that sandwiches and burgers with a lot of toppings are my nightmare. One of my ultimate nightmares is mustard. “It’s just like a basic Cuban sandwich done with a little extra love,” he explained. “We have pitsmoked ham on it. We have slow-roasted pork shoulder, like barbecue pork shoulder. And we make our own homemade Cuban mustard sauce for it.”

A Familiar Face If you’re from the Yankton area, you’re probably familiar with chef Bill Nooney. “I’ve made food for pretty much every single person’s wedding for years and years and years [at Minervas],” he laughed. “I feel like once people found out that I had my own thing, it just snowballed.” His culinary résumé also includes food and drink pairings with Ben’s Brewing Company and catering other large events. Bur Oak carried several beers from the local brewery prepandemic and the Nooneys say they hope to again, when they get back to normal hours.

That would excite a lot of humans, but I was nervous. Also, I literally only eat a plain burger with a bun or a mushroom and Swiss burger if I’m feeling adventurous. And my typical sandwich choice is a bland turkey with some oregano. During moments like this I would normally hand it to my Try It buddy, but I was solo. I took a bite of the hamburger first. People… How have I never had an onion ring on a burger before that moment? And the barbecue sauce didn’t shoot out of the sides like I feared, which probably was kudos to how large the patty was. It came with a side of waffle fries, and they were cooked perfectly and weren’t diner fries that sometimes get too greasy.

Before I finished it and totally shocked myself, I tried the infamous Cubano. Everything looked so fresh, including the bright green pickles peeking out through the bread. Bill wasn’t kidding. The meat was juicy and full of flavor with every bite. This dish had a side of onion rings, and they not only were cooked just right, but the onion inside broke apart with no trouble. It’s always the worst when you eat onion rings with someone and you have the moment when you continue to make eye contact as you can’t seem to chew through the onion and it dangles. Just me? +

BOTTOM LINE: I’ve been stalking Bur Oak’s Facebook for months, and I’ll admit I was devastated when they closed. Thankfully it’s open again, and I’m looking forward to coming back when they have a full menu, which also includes salads like a Chef Salad, and breakfast items like pancakes and biscuits and gravy. And speaking of biscuits and gravy, you know I’m destroying that Breakfast Pot Pie.

The creative couple took an old bar and gave it a new life. A variety of plants bring a bright, natural touch, and Hannah told me about future plans to put a mural on one of the walls and to add custom booths.

While the diner menu has a new take on normal dishes, the pricing is what you would expect at a diner. Take out or stay in (eventually), it’s easy on the wallet.

These are average dishes with a not-soaverage twist on the execution. I can’t believe I almost finished a stacked burger, and that I found myself enjoying the Cubano with mustard. I am shook.

Severance Brewing Company began working toward its goal of “severing ties in life and drink” on August 2, 2019. “The brewery started with the idea of Mark Stavenger and I severing ties from our day-to-day jobs that we both comfortably had for a decade and jumping in to something new,” said head brewer and co-founder Scott Heckel.

Blood Orange Pilzenus Americanas STYLE:

A summer staple at Severance, the Blood Orange Pilzenus Americanas is a light-bodied beer. According to Heckel, it's intended as a stepping stone into drinking microbrews.

Heckel says that while he brews, his co-founder and taproom manager Stavenger works with their staff to make a strong team. As Heckel says, they stray from the norm of following different style guidelines, starting with an idea for the final beer and working backwards. And despite their best efforts to start smoothly, Heckel says that didn’t happen. After opening, Severance only caught the last couple shows with Levitt at the Falls before being thrust into winter, a time when breweries tend to be less popular, according to Heckel. Then 2020 brought COVID-19. “It’s been challenging,” said Heckel. Severance pivoted with to-go items and began taking online orders. At the start of summer they opened up the outdoor patio to create additional seating. Located in downtown Sioux Falls in The Cascade at Falls Park building, the brewery features an industrial look alongside rustic textures. According to Heckel, the

taproom is inviting, kid-friendly, and has a few "Easter eggs," including a shuffleboard table, bag hooks, and even changing tables in both gender bathrooms. Another of the brewery’s hidden features is its commitment to is sustainable operations, according to Heckel. “We have a 15-barrel hot liquor tank, and that allows us to actually capture the water that we use to chill the beer coming out of the brew kettle,” he said. By reusing that water, Heckel says the brewery saves about 13,000 gallons of water per year. Additionally, the yeast used for their brews doesn’t need to be temperature controlled. “We can allow the yeast to ferment at upwards of 90 degrees without getting any off flavors in the beer,” he said. “It does save a substantial amount of energy from our glycol system.” According to its website, the brewery sends its “spent grain to a local farmer near Brandon to help feed over 600 head of cattle.” Severance recently had some good news, receiving a gold Crushie Award, and was named one of the top four Coolest Taprooms in the nation by the 2020 Craft Beer Marketing Awards. “Despite all the hardships that we’ve come across in the first year here,” sad Heckel, "I don’t regret leaving my corporate job for one minute.” +

5 Random Facts + We moved to Sioux Falls three and a half years ago. Before that, we lived in New York for three years, and then before that I lived in India for 24 years. It’s been a journey—and a good one.

A r t A f fe cts

Being an arts writer, partner to artist Eli Show, and a writer at Fresh Produce and Ipso Gallery, I’ve had the opportunity to immerse myself as best I can in the local arts community. Our family of three frequents art openings and First Fridays at Ipso Gallery, the Visual Arts Center at the Washington Pavilion, Sioux Falls Arts Council, Third Eye Gallery at Vishnu Bunny Tattoo & Piercing, and Post Pilgrim Gallery, to name a few.

+ I’ve sewn almost a

week’s worth of clothing for myself.

We enjoy collecting art, and the last few years of being a part of Ipso Gallery has allowed me to connect with a lot of artists. So you’ll see a lot of different artworks around our house with the purpose of sharing artists we love with the people who come into our space. I have a good story about each piece we’ve collected and the relationships we’ve built from it. Some of our favorites are from Amy Jarding, Peter Reichardt, Mark Stemwedel, Sarah Cherrington, Chris Bostwick, and Erin Lynn Smith.

+ I love making things for our home, especially patchwork floor cushions from old pillows and repurposed quilting fabric.

Sips of Si g n i f ic anc e

Since becoming a parent, my love for good coffee and sours (beer) has grown tremendously. Is it directly related? Who knows. This has been the perfect excuse to support our friends at The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. and Fernson Brewing Company. My mornings and my summers would be dreadful without them.

+ My husband and I collaborate on different projects, and we recently made a bench that I’m obsessed with.

To D i ne O ut or Not t o D i ne O ut?

My office is located pretty close to our house, so we often make it home for lunches. But it’s always a resounding yes (maybe too often) to the No. 37 and B-04 at Pho Quynh Vietnamese Restaurant and the Vietnamese Fried Chicken Sandwich at Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen.

+ I’m ethnically from a

fairly small community (in context of the country) in Northeast India, a state named Mizoram. I haven’t met a Mizo yet in Sioux Falls, but I would love to! (If you’re Mizo and reading this: Uiha! Kan va vang ve, lo connect i la.)

P r osp er i n g w it h Plants

A few plants from New York made it to Sioux Falls with us when we moved in 2016, and since then I’ve been lucky to slowly fill our home with plants that have grown from clippings from friends. Other than visiting our local garden centers, one of my favorite things to do is scour local Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist plant listings to find some special ones. That’s how we found our monstrous 8-year-old lacy tree philodendron, which now has its own room.

In the last few years of producing concept-based publications, I’ve always enjoyed connecting with other creatives in the Sioux Falls community as well as working with small shops for our printing needs. Marc Wagner of Skullmore Magazine is a solid guide and has answered a lot of dumb questions from me, and shops such as Mailway Printers Inc. and The Mitographers Inc. have been a pleasure to work with.

I usually spend a few nights a week sewing and quilting. Since becoming a parent, I think a big struggle has been finding a space for myself and for some quiet. This has been a really big meditative practice for me and something that allows me to make things I love for myself, my family, and friends. The Conscious Clothing collection at Terra Shepherd Boutique & Apothecary has been an inspiration in building my wardrobe.

One of our routine activities from spring to fall is walking around our central Sioux Falls neighborhood in the evenings. We have a lot of alleyways, which are a prime spot for our toddler to explore and run around. We usually end up at Menlo Park midway through our walk. I love that we have so much space and so many facilities close by to unwind as a family. Our evening walks turn into mid-morning walks on the weekends where we visit our favorite Sioux Falls Food Co+op for a snack and a quick grocery run.

My office being downtown has allowed me to explore and walk around the area. This has really fed my love for photography, especially photographing abstract architectural elements around downtown. I’ve been building a body of work around this concept with photographs from downtown and the north side of town.

“We're the only place from Minneapolis to Denver that you can get Rodizio-style service,” said Carnaval Brazilian Grill bar manager Ben Schempp. Carnaval’s Gauchos have been carving rotisserie-cooked meats tableside in Sioux Falls since 2005. “We're a super unique restaurant in the way that we operate with our Rodizio-style service,” said Schempp. “We also have a great à la carte menu that you can order from.” Kitchen manager Gabriela Marquez says there are plenty of other options for guests to try if patrons want a more traditional way of dining. “The Churrasco Sampler platter of the Rodizio meats is pretty interesting,” said Marquez.

One of Carnaval’s newer menu items is the Antipasto Platter, which is an assorted platter of cheeses, olives, salami, pickles, hearts of palm, and fruit.

The Churrasco Sampler includes two mini skewers with parmesan chicken, picanha (sirloin), flank steak, and house sausage served with a side salad, farofa, freshly mashed potatoes, and chimichurri sauce.

“In Brazil, we often have something to drink like a beer or wine, so while eating this you can sip on a drink,” said Marquez.

Marquez is a native Brazilian from São Paulo. She joined the Carnaval team in June of 2018. “I love to cook. I am from Brazil, so I am very proud to be here doing what I know how to do and spreading my culture,” said Marquez.

Marquez says that the Coconut Shrimp is a menu favorite. “The flavors in the shrimp go really well with the coconut,” said Marquez. “It is our Tiger Shrimp with coconut breading served with sweet chili sauce and lime.”

What is Rodizio Service?

Rodizio service is when Gauchos bring guests unlimited skewered meat and a variety of sides right to their table. Guests are provided a two-sided disk—green for “meat” and red for “stop.”

Being a Brazilian steakhouse, Schempp says Carnaval uses a lot of fun, unique flavors, like passion fruit, pineapple, and coconut. “Our Brazilian 6.0 is one of our signature cocktails,” explained Schempp. “We hollow out the inside of a pineapple and then blend six different liquors with coconut milk and some of the pineapple, and serve it back in the pineapple. It’s super fun.” Among Carnaval’s drink options, you can find the locally brewed Carnaval Beer, which is a partnership with WoodGrain Brewing Company.

Schempp says the restaurant is always switching up its drink menu and offers a plethora of new rum-based cocktails for the summertime. However, he says that you can’t pass up on the national drink of Brazil, a Caipirinha. “You cannot come to Carnaval without having a Caipirinha. It’s lime, sugar, and cachaça.”

“The partnership that we have is something that we created around a year and a half ago,” said Schempp. “We give them our pineapple and they make an IPA out of it.”

Family Fun in the Town of No Rules and No Regrets

by Mol ly Sperl ich

Deadwood is known for its shootouts, parties, and gambling, but its newest addition, Outlaw Square, hopes to give visitors and locals a different experience. Located on the corner of Deadwood Street and Main Street, sitting on the site of the former Deadwood City Hall, Outlaw Square is an outdoor gathering space featuring year-round events. The inspiration for the attraction came almost 15 years ago after the community recognized the need for a central gathering place to host events like concerts, parades, festivals, and historical reenactments.

Bobby Rock, the director of Outlaw Square, says he was excited to be involved in the building, fundraising, and planning process. Rock has lived in the Black Hills since 1998 and grew close to the Deadwood community when he began volunteering to emcee town events. “I had left and moved back from Wyoming in 2018 and had heard about the concept,” said Rock. “I put my hat in the ring, and out of all the applicants they chose me. This gave me the honor of trying to bring everyone’s dream to fruition.” The square is built entirely from sponsorships. Rock says there’s no citizen taxpayer money involved. The square was built with the help of the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission and through a partnership with the state of South Dakota. The hope, Rock says, is that Outlaw Square will become a space for friends and family to come together.

“One thing we noticed about Deadwood is we don’t really have any family activities,” said Rock. “Deadwood is known for rough-and-tumble parties and gambling, and there’s really no place for Mom and Dad and the kids to go and enjoy.” With more than 200 programs scheduled at the attraction, there’s something for everyone, even in the winter. Outlaw Square also features a Glice rink—a synthetic ice rink made from plastic that can be skated on year-round and primarily runs in the colder seasons. “Since it’s a synthetic product, we’re able to skate on it in 90 degree weather if we decide to put it up,” said Rock.

54 |

The square opened in December, but the ice rink was closed early in March, due to the impact of COVID-19. Deadwood reopened to the public on May 14, but Rock says they’re still taking precautions and creating spaces that allow for social distancing. This included moving its Deadwood Alive program from Main Street to the Outlaw Square stage. Deadwood Alive is a performance group that provides entertainment to tourists and locals by recreating historical shootouts and the Trial of Jack McCall, perform musical numbers, and offer guests stagecoach rides.

“We wanted to give people a chance to spread out and get people used to giving their neighbors that extra six feet of space,” said Rock. The Deadwood Alive reenactments took place at the square until June 20, when they returned to their original location. “We’re beginning to roll things out slowly, and we’ve seen steady growth. We wanted to slowly open things up as people get more comfortable,” said Rock. The Summer Concert Series started June 24. July acts include The Young Dubliners (July 8), Boogie Machine with Zoe Keehn (July 15), and Dakota Country with Lacy Nelson (July 22).

58 |

Outlaw Square is expected to bring visitors to the area, but more than that, organizers hope it becomes a place where locals can enjoy family friendly activities while still being in the heart of downtown. “Everyone says that it was built for the tourists, but it’s not. It’s built for the locals,” said Rock. He continued, “Here we have provided a place in central Deadwood for families to come down and enjoy. Come down with the kids or friends and grab a piece of lawn.”

The D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery & Archives

b y S y d n e y Wo o d

Whether patrons are seeking out a piece of American history, or they’re interested in getting up close and personal with Rainbow Trout, the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery & Archives in Spearfish has a wide variety of attractions for all.

60 |

605MAGAZINE.COM

Located between Spearfish City Park and the Spearfish Campground, the grounds are open year-round and are free to the public. The hatchery was established in 1896, making it one of the oldest operating hatcheries in the country. “It is a fun, family-friendly learning environment that is free, which is always nice when you’re traveling as a family,” said April Gregory, curator of collections and exhibits. Gregory is going on her 11th year with the hatchery. Not being a South Dakota native, she says she moved to Spearfish from Minnesota sight unseen to work as an archives intern. She then went on to become the executive director of the Booth Society, the nonprofit support group of the hatchery, for five years before being hired into her current role with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. There are a multitude of things to explore on the 10-acre historic site.

Visitors have the opportunity to interact with the fish by feeding the Rainbow and Brown Trout, or watching them through the underwater viewing windows (photo on page 66). “We’re an active fish hatchery, even though we have the title 'historic' in our name,” said Gregory. “We’re still actively raising fish and restocking them.” The hatchery no longer hatches eggs. However, it’s still a part of the National Fish Hatchery System. The fish raised at the hatchery are distributed to regional tribal waters. “You can tour the Hector Von Bayer Museum, housed in the historic hatchery building, and it’s all about fish culture or the historic superintendent’s home, The Booth House,” said Gregory. “We also have a full-scale replica of a fish railcar. There were only 10 railcars used over 70 years to transport live fish from coast to coast.”

C U LT U R E + E N T E R TA I N M E N T

Visitors can expect to be surprised and find more than they might have imagined a hatchery to be like.”

Gregory says there are both traditional and newer available educational opportunities. The museum offers self-guided tours, and a smartphone app is available to give guests access to additional information.

“Hopefully this month the railcar will be open, but we don’t foresee the Booth House to open since social distancing would not be possible,” said Gregory. “We’re not sure if the museum will open.”

“Another fun thing that kids especially enjoy is the scavenger hunts we have available, which really engage them,” said Gregory. “If they turn in a completed scavenger hunt they get a free cup of fish food.”

The hatchery is one of the few on the National Historic Registry.

The museum and Booth House are typically open daily during the summer season, but due to COVID-19, they will remain closed.

62 |

“Visitors can experience the outdoors while learning about fisheries and a very unique piece of American history that not many people know about,” said Gregory.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is the oldest federal conservation agency, and was the first established by congress for the protection of national resources. The archives are host to 148 years of fishery conservation work.

“There’s something magical about visiting the hatchery,” said Gregory. “You don’t have to be interested in fisheries or fish and people still find something that they enjoy about visiting, and that’s why they keep coming back.”

There are 1.8 million archival records and 14,000 items spanning from 1871 to the present.

FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT DCBOOTHFISHHATCHERY.ORG.+

“We are, if not the largest, one of the largest collections related to fishery conservation work in the nation,” said Gregory. The archival records contain anything from fishery reports and studies to an assortment of photos. The objects in the collection are pieces of scientific equipment related to fishery work, including fish shipment containers and tags used to track fish.

WHEN DICK TERMES NEEDED A PL ACE TO CREATE HIS WORLD-FAMOUS SPHERES, IT WAS A NO-BR AINER TO CONSTRUCT SOMETHING AS AESTHETICALLY PLEASING AS HIS ART. FAST-FORWARD 20-PLUS YEARS AND IT’S NOW ONE OF THE TOP-R ATED AIRBNBS IN SPEARFISH. Nestled discreetly at the base of Spearfish Mountain, The Turtle House is a geodesic dome that at one time housed two art studios, one of which belonged to Dick, with the other belonging to his wife, Markie Scholz. “My dad’s studio is still upstairs, so having the Airbnb in the same building is really unique for travelers,” said Lang Termes, singer/songwriter son of Dick and Markie. The eccentricities don’t stop there, but actually continue throughout the entire property, starting at the road. A circular turtle sign welcomes guests down a long driveway that leads to the dome, passing a geodesic greenhouse and one of Dick’s earliest pieces.

HOME + LIVING

“Having my dad’s art available for guests to see is just part of the experience,” said Lang. The same turtle sign can be seen above the covered patio that marks the entrance to the rental. Complete with bike racks and a sliding glass door, Lang says the only inspiration needed for their construction was around them. “We wanted to keep things as organic to the Black Hills as possible, which is why we used lumber harvested from the pine beetle epidemic for the pillars,” said Lang.

70 |

The indoor space is no different, with timber pillars, raw wood butcher block, and local photography adding to the space’s sense of hominess and comfort. “Most of our art is either from my dad or from my cousin, Bonny Fleming, a local photographer out here,” explained Lang. Second to the art was the idea of combining coziness with the philosophy of tiny house living, which he says is to utilize space any way you can.

What the Shell? The Termes believe the geodesic dome represents home, much like a shell does to a turtle.

“We have some bunk beds in this nook area that are great for kids and raise our occupancy from two to four,” said Lang. “Our carpenter, Jeremiah Hansen, had the idea to make the awkward space into something useful.” Amongst other great ideas, Hansen also voted to keep the elevated square already present on the ceiling. To the naked eye, it looks like an artistic centerpiece for the room. Lang says there is much more to it than architectural appeal.

74 |

“When my dad was first working on his spheres upstairs, he realized he couldn’t get them out of the door,” he said. “He actually cut a hole in the floor so he could drop them into my mom’s studio and take them out through the garage door, which used to be where the sliding doors are.” The “old but new” theme carries into the bedroom and the bathroom, which has a dual entry to increase the flow of the quaint space.

Not much of a biker? Walk next door to the Termesphere Gallery, which houses Dick’s pieces, holds workshops, and offers lectures about his artistic process.

While the geodesic dome and outdoor area are enough to intrigue guests for a stay or two, the proximity to trails paired with the juxtaposing isolation from other homes create a rare experience.

“We are going to start offering an Airbnb package that allows guests to visit the gallery and Dad’s studio,” said Lang. “We just want to create the best experience we can.”

Over the last year and a half in Spearfish, Goetz has been able to go through enough inventory to make her business her main job.

People might know me from…

my calendars. This is what really started getting my name out there as an artist in South Dakota. I created my first calendar for my senior thesis in college. The next year I created another, but it was all Black Hills themed. It had a great response. What’s great about the calendars is you get 12 full-on illustrations all in one.

W hen I’m not working with my business, I’m … working on other

business ventures. Recently, my boyfriend, Kenny, and I have started a custom window blinds business called Kodiak Coverings. However, when I’m just relaxing, I love exploring new areas around the Hills for future illustrations or just hanging with my family.

My love for illustrating started… very young. I always knew I wanted

to be an artist. One of my favorite childhood toys was one of those magnetic drawing pads. The only thing that changed is I used to want to be a Disney animator. When I attended a portfolio review day at the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, the reviewer from Ringling College of Art and Design swayed me into the direction of illustration. I think about that interaction often, because he really did change my life. And now I definitely know being an independent artist is more my speed.

The art medium I use is… mostly digital, which I think a lot of people don’t understand, but it takes the same amount of effort and talent as if I were to draw on a regular piece of paper. However, I use every medium in my sketchbook—watercolor, gouache, different paint markers, pens, whatever I can find. One of my favorite parts of running my business is… seeing the

reactions. When anyone is thrilled about something they see that I created, it’s the best feeling. Especially when they don’t know who you are, and you’re standing right next to them listening to them talk about your piece. Priceless.

My favorite part about my job is…

I get to make money from things I created out of nothing.

The f irst piece I sold was…

also the first piece I got into a show. It’s called Biker in the Hills. It’s a simple linework illustration of a mountain biker. The show was the Illest of Ill, a Ringling College-run show for illustration majors. I was a freshman, and shortly after the show, a friend of a friend wanted to buy a print of the biker. The original showpiece now hangs in my dad’s office.

My favorite piece on my website is… called Meadow. It’s from my first calendar. It was for the

month February, and I have loved it for three years now. There’s just something about that color palette.

The inspiration behind each piece… varies. Some are just as simple as places that I think

are cool. Others have more meaning. For example, the Poet’s Table illustration was created when some hooligans decided to chop up the original table and take it from its home where it had been since 1969. My drawing shows the original table the way it should’ve stayed, and a portion of the profits went to building a new table and to the ranger station that caught the bandits.

Customers can find my work…

on my website or on my art-specific Instagram (@woodsia_ilvensis). I also keep a good print inventory at the Freckled Fox in Spearfish.

The hardest part of my work is...

the actual business side of things. When you’re an artist, you have to learn to be resilient when it comes to your pricing and asking for what you deserve.

Something I’m excited about right now is… my website. A few months ago I finally set up my site to

have its own shop and take orders. It’s fun to be able to create the site exactly how I imagine. Then when the notification appears on my phone that an order was placed, I do a little happy dance.

W hen I walk around downtown, one of my favorite places to stop by is… the

The best part of Spearf ish is... Spearfish Canyon. It’s so beautiful through there that it almost looks fake.

Something that’s inf luencing me right now is… other creators. I’m very motivated by seeing the way other creatives market and run their businesses. Sharing knowledge about how to monetize artistic endeavors shouldn’t be selfishly hidden. I admire creatives who are open to advice, and I hope to do the same.

Freckled Fox. This locally owned clothing store is a little bit off the main drag, but is a must see. They have the cutest clothes, the best smelling candles, and a beautiful space.

I love to grab a bite or drink at… Sawyer Brewing Co. The atmosphere, the pizza, the beer—and it’s right on the creek. What more could you ask for?

My favorite place to go for inspiration is… into the Black Hills. I like to go into the

small tourist towns up by Mount Rushmore or go for a hike. There are so many hidden gems out here.

Someone local who I admire is…

my father. He and my mother recently acquired the Spearfish KOA Campground, and it’s made me realize how involved and passionate he is about how businesses can thrive here in Spearfish. He will pull his car over in the middle of a road to pick up trash. That’s the kind of person to admire.

One thing I love about South Dakota is... there’s a real sense of community. You know

people when you go to the grocery store, you’ve known the same people since kindergarten. This is a special quality; don’t take it for granted.

Global pandemics and national protests have a way of making us parents think on our feet when it comes to summer activities and outdoor adventures. So, feeling up for a challenge, I decided to up the ante and have knee surgery, rendering me to crutches… with a toddler… during the nicest week of the year.

Imagine walking on stilts, blindfolded, into a crowd of puppies that have just heard the word “park.” That’s what it was like being on crutches with a 2-year-old. Not only does she not understand why she can’t use them or why I can’t pick her up, she also doesn’t get that suplexing Mama was not an option. Other things that weren’t options? Going on walks, running around the back yard, and literally anything that involved me getting on the ground. I was left with two options: make my incredibly active and headstrong daughter sit on the couch and watch old Disney movies all day, or re-enroll her in daycare (having taken her out when COVID-19 started). Neither option seemed like the right one, leaving me feeling guilty and full of self-pity, both of which looked terrible on me. This unexpected detour led me to put aside the fact that I wanted to cuddle Sloan all day and made me realize that giving her the opportunity to be around other kids her age, play with new-to-her toys, and engage in crafts and learning that I had yet to find on Pinterest was the only option I had.

WHAT I’VE

Trading our planned trip to the zoo for a week of binge-watching Netflix in a cocoon of ice packs and Cheez-Its was less than ideal. With that being said, it gave me the opportunity to appreciate the alternate routes we’re forced to take. What I want to be doing and what I have the ability to be doing are two different things. And while that’s frustrating and discouraging, it is what it is. For Sloan it’s been nothing more than a chance to see her friends and have new experiences, and I think understanding that has allowed me to be okay with this sudden change in plans. As unsettling as the unknown is, looking at it through a child’s eyes is beyond comforting, and quite honestly, enlightening. Not only do they devote all of their time and energy to the present, but they do so with such uninhibited fascination that it’s seemingly impossible to not feel captivated with what’s in front of you.

But I know that as soon as Reid picks her up from daycare, we can go to the park (crutches in tow). And walking trails, zoos, and our back yard will be there this weekend, or next week, or even next month. For now, I’ve been given this extra time to work on school, myself, and to plan the best summer I can. Do you know how amazing it is to read a book with no banging pots or cartoon theme songs in the background? It’s magical. And even though I love Sloan’s kitchen concerts and have come to think of Spirit the horse as my own, I’m enjoying this time, as unexpected as it may be. Whether it be miles and miles of one-lane construction, or weeks of bed rest and crutches, take the detours for what they are: Extra time to slow down and welcome the moments that we’re in, instead of longing for where we want to be.+

Yes, I’m missing my girl on these hot summer days. And listening to kids on their way to the park sends me into a tailspin of mom guilt and longing.

LEARNED 1 When you’re used to being with your children all day long, it can be hard on both of you to spend time apart. Make the transition easier on both of you by reminding them how much fun daycare can be.

2

Quiet time is nice, but can also be deafening. When the stillness gets to be too much, go on a walk, FaceTime a friend, or even listen to a podcast.

3

Do not, I repeat DO NOT feel like taking time to heal, whether it be physically or mentally, is the equivalent to being lazy. Healing is caring, and caring is what we want to teach our children to be.

5 QUESTIONS WITH TSCHETTER

WHAT PART OF A S'MORE IS THE BEST?

The marshmallow, hands down. Although I can eat graham crackers and chocolate all day, it’s a perfectly roasted, caramelized square of sugary goodness that’s the best part. WHAT EVENTS CAN FIRESIDE S’MORES BE FOUND AT?

We have done wedding showcases, classy celebrations, pop-up shops, holiday open houses at local boutiques, local craft shows, the South Dakota State Fair, Santa in the Shops at Main Street Square, and many different events in the Hills such as Spin the Beetle Fat Bike Race in Custer. S'mores know no bounds! WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT YOUR PRODUCTS?

They’re made with love. Seriously. Marshmallows and handcrafted graham crackers are a labor of love. They're sticky, putzy, and time consuming to make. But our small-batch, made-from-scratch marshmallows and graham crackers are part of people making memories around the fire, so we'll keep at it.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME DURING THE PANDEMIC?

Last September, my husband was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer. It turned our world upside down. We really focused on spending more time together at home as a family. Those practices were already in place when the pandemic hit. We were already in our own bubble, trying to heal together. WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO SET UP CAMP IN THE SOUTH DAKOTA SUMMER?

Oh, South Dakota, your list is long. Apart from the many great campgrounds and campsites we're blessed to have, our family enjoys setting up our camper and bringing the boat to Angostura Reservoir. We get some good fishing in (dinner, done!), and the kids get to swim and play at the beach. If it includes campfires and s’mores, count us in.
