It’s “spooky season,” and the October issue always is a blast, because we get to shoot haunted houses and anything else to get in the “spirit.” It’s all fun until COVID cancels most of your stories that you’ve shot over the last two years, and you still can’t use them because the illness has prevented some of them from not opening. The good news? The Fort Sisseton Historic State Park event (see page 24) is outdoors. Last year, 605’s Taylor Hanson and I walked the alleged haunted trails and heard scary stories around the bonfire. Happy autumn, everyone. Grab yourself an oversized scarf, and be proud to have that Pumpkin Spice Latte. You deserve it.

M U LTIMEDIA DES IG NER I didn’t really have much to do with the magazine this month, which I’ll get to, but the one thing I was pretty hyped about was going to Vishnu Bunny Tattoo & Piercing and taking photos of Kay Steiger with 605's Jordan Cushman. It made me realize, now that pool season has come to a close I should probably get a new tattoo or maybe get some microblading done. Alas, two and a half years is far too short a time to work with such a fun and talented team. I have things to do. I’ve put this off for far too long. I regret to announce that this is my final issue with 605 Magazine. I bid you all a very fond farewell and hope see you around. THANK YOU TO OUR 605 MAGAZINE ISSUE SPONSOR:

C L AY T I L E B A R N by Dawn Geertsema A short drive from Badlands National Park in the bottom of Peno Basin lies a barn plastered in tiles that is nearly 100 years old. “My family, although they’ve been here for a really long time, didn’t homestead on this property,” said Shelby Woodland. “It was a different family. One of the women who grew up here is still alive. She’s been out here, and she remembers it as a working farm.”

“
ONE OF MY SPECIFIC FAVORITE PARTS IS THE HUGE GLASS WINDOW IN THE EVENING WHEN YOU CAN SEE THE LIGHTS AND THE ENTIRE LOFT FROM THE OUTSIDE. IT’S REALLY GORGEOUS AND WOWS ME EVERY TIME, EVEN THOUGH I’VE SEEN IT SO MANY TIMES.” -SHELBY WOODLAND
Built by John Guethlein in 1925, the property was a bustling family farm with cattle, pigs, horses, and everything they needed to thrive in the country. Over time, it deteriorated, moving with the earth and losing functionality. “My grandpa had it since the 1960s, maybe. It wasn’t until the past couple of decades that my parents were able to buy it from my grandfather,” said Shelby of her parents, Rick and Wendy Johnson. Shelby’s mother has had a vision of transforming the barn for decades. About four years ago, Shelby and her husband Jakob decided to install new windows and doors in an effort to revive the spirit of the barn. “Within that process, the ball just started rolling,” said Shelby. “Then we moved towards feeling like this is something that could be really cool and that we wanted to invest in.” They decided to turn it into a venue of sorts called the Clay Tile Barn for either musicians or events, like weddings. The Woodlands started a nonprofit by the same name, Clay Tile Barn LLC, as well to help with the project.

Shelby and Jakob worked on the renovation when they had the chance, but it was slow moving. When the pandemic hit, the couple was left with copious amounts of time on their hands. “During COVID, we lived out here with my parents and for the most part we’d stay out at the barn. We really just delved in there,” she said. Recently, they came to the conclusion that a venue wasn’t right for the space. “But in the past couple months, we made the switch to a creative artist retreat and Airbnb,” said Shelby. “We just feel like it’s going to be a better fit for its character. Slow. Reflective. Peaceful. It’s a better fit for us and what we like to share with people.” She imagines bands or teams of artists and creatives coming out together to spend time bonding away from the hustle of the busy world. Using many different elements of architecture and furnishing, they designed a space that channels mid-century modern and farmhouse aesthetics. They hope to have the project finished by 2022. When completed, the barn will be able to sleep roughly five to six people comfortably with a queen bed, a futon, and plenty of couches and chairs. The layout will also include an open concept kitchen, a protected patio, and a bathroom and laundry combo. The bar space has a custom shelving set up that mimics shapes of the mid-20th century. “We’ll keep that all there to have a really unique vibe as a place where people can create and still kind of perform in a small way,” she said. The loft space has a stage rug that will be professionally lit and paired with a quality sound system. For those interested, the loft window allows a clear view of the constellations at night, as well.

BACK TO THE BEGINNING
The farm originally had teams of horses for plowing, a milk parlor and dairy cows, granaries, a sizable hay loft, and a cream separator room.

“My mom and dad have been a really big part of this,” added Shelby. “A lot of inspiration and vision has come from myself and my mother.”
Recognizing the time and finances that went into the project is important to them.
One of the biggest struggles of renovating the barn has been the financial implications of the project. With the Johnsons funding the majority of the renovation, Shelby and Jakob hope people see what they contributed behind the scenes.
“That’s what you get into when you try to save things,” said Shelby. “With keeping this as an Airbnb, it really is our interest to find people that legitimately care and want to support a project like this.”
“The brick and mortar is really their investment,” said Shelby. “We could have probably built two or three buildings new the size of the barn for the cost of what we did to renovate this.”
She added, “I hope there’s a sense of taking in all the details. We put a lot of work in, and we will continue to do a lot of detail work. I hope there’s a vibe that they can feel and can tell was intentional and that they can benefit from that.”

Along with seeing the beauty of the renovation, there’s something to be said about the charm of the barn’s exterior, one of the larger-scale original aspects that is going to remain. “The exterior will be an on-going process of upkeep of the barn, the windows, and the clay tile itself. The masonry work on the barn is an ongoing process,” explained Shelby. Coming out to the property, the isolated location is ideal to enjoy the environment, according to Shelby.
+
“Even though I grew up in this area and I understand what it means to be remote, being able to get 100% away from people is so valuable in today’s world,” she said. “I really think that’s one of my favorite parts that you can come out here and it’s quiet and peaceful.”
WATCH THE PROGRESS The Woodlands are currently renting out a 2006 Airstream on the property and giving tours to visitors who are interested in seeing the vision and progress of the barn. The Airstream sleeps three.

A Night of Thrills and Chills Haunted Fort Sisseton Historic State Park
by Dawn Geertsema “One of the things we love to do at Fort Sisseton [Historic State Park] is get people out there to relax, to enjoy nature, to enjoy each other again, and just have fun at the same time,” said park manager Ali Jo Tonsfeldt. Fort Sisseton Historic State Park will be haunted for October 15-16 during A Night of Thrills and Chills. The event will be a fundraiser to put money back into maintaining the fort and welcoming new exhibits. “The big thing about the Night of Thrills and Chills is, yes, our goal is to scare you, but our goal is also to make sure families come out and have fun,” said Tonsfeldt. 28 |

KILLER THRILLER TONIGHT One of the biggest attractions of the event is the haunted maze, was relocated in 2020 to a stretch of prairie from its normal home in the South Barracks because of COVID restrictions. It will be inside again this year. “Our goal is to get you lost, especially when we do it inside the building, because we don’t want you to know which way you’re going,” said Tonsfeldt. “And you surprisingly walk a lot. It’s amazing how many twists and turns … you can create in a haunted house.” Amongst the workers, the focus is to be as spooky as possible.
“We have a contest, whoever makes someone pee their pants the most, they actually win an award,” said Tonsfeldt with a laugh. Along with the maze, there’s a hayrack ride and Halloweenthemed homemade concessions, like popcorn balls called Zombie Brains, caramel apples called Poison Apples, and cake pops called Goblin Eyes. “For those who want to make a night of it, bring s’mores and other roasting goodies for we have campfires for rent,” she added.
“Probably one of the favorite scarers is my daughter, who is a very good contortionist. You think she’s just this innocent little 10-year-old, but she can contort herself in some pretty unique ways, and she has a loud piercing scream. She’s good.” -Ali Jo Tonsfeldt

BY LANTERN LIGHT During Fort Sisseton’s prime in the late 1860s and the 1870s, electricity had yet to be invented, so the buildings don’t have lights. The Night of Thrills and Chills is an opportunity to experience the Lantern Tours. “The only way to get a good see of them at night is with kerosene lanterns,” explained Tonsfeldt. “One, it makes you appreciate electricity, but two, it really adds a different feel to the buildings and to the rooms and to the history.”
Tours walk through the fort’s military history and through the legends and sightings of the spirits that still haunt the grounds. “We tell the ghost stories, but we also focus on the personality of the people, what was expected of them,” said Tonsfeldt. “We actually request that everyone is very respectful to them, especially when we’re doing a lantern tour, because it is their story, it is their history, it is their life, and they are still here for some reason.”

CHILLING CHRONICLES OF THE CAMP “Fort Sisseton’s known to be haunted,” said Tonsfeldt. “Our little boy has been seen since the 1920s at the fort, so we have all these ghost stories throughout the decades that people have passed on.” During the event, there’s ample opportunity for hearing some stories of the spirits that reportedly haunt the camp. “He will walk around, and he will grab people’s hands and hold their hand,” said Tonsfeldt. “He will play with children in the parade ground.” Another popular spirit is called the Lady in White, a woman clad in what Tonsfeldt says seems to be a servant’s clothing. “The lady in white is seen at night, and it looks like she’s taking a candle to the walls and burning bed bugs off,” said Tonsfeldt. “In the 1870s, that was the chore of the females in the camp.” She also is seen leaving a building and entering others, as well as walking the boardwalk. “Our third most popular one is actually a buffalo soldier,” she said. “We believe his name is J.C. Smith. He was with Company E of the 25th Infantry.” Tonsfelt says that Smith assisted in building many structures at the fort, and his name is etched into the guardhouse. He was later sentenced to death elsewhere and can be seen marching the guardhouse.

HUNTING 101 by Dawn Geertsema For anyone interested in learning the art and craft behind hunting, Outdoor Campus-Sioux Falls offers Hunting 101. Groups, homeschool, and high school coordinator Derek Klawitter covers the entirety of the hunting experience in the course: choosing a gun, aiming, locations, safety, having relationships with landowners, weather factors, dressing and tagging game, and processing the harvest. 36 |

“The program is for anyone 10 years of age and up,” explained Klawitter. “I have taken out entire families.”
Other ways hunting is beneficial include wildlife population management, providing food, exercise, and a connection to nature.
He added that hunters are slowly diminishing in South Dakota.
605’s marketing and events manager, John Snyder, and lead multimedia designer, Jordan Cushman, joined Klawitter to learn the ways of the trade with apprentice tags in hand.
“Unfortunately the majority of hunters in the U.S. are starting to age out faster than new people are joining the tradition,” said Klawitter. “I think people should take up hunting to keep the tradition alive.”
Klawitter brought the pair out to Paul Dailey’s stretch of land, where there has been a pattern of deer decimating crops.

Dailey’s land is part of the Walk-In Areas Program (WIA), in which private landowners allow foottraffic hunters to use their property. In exchange, the landowners receive a payout and non-negligent liability immunity. Every WIA has its own limit of how much game it can turn out each year. Dailey’s land is on the high end of those numbers. “Some of the properties can harvest up to 20 plus deer in a given year, while others I only take out two or three deer due to landowner allowance,” said Klawitter. “Since we started this program almost five years ago, we have harvested over 100 deer on his property alone.” Anyone coming onto a WIA must above all else respect the landowners rules, and Klawitter says that his relationship with each one is important. “When you think about it, why would someone allow a complete stranger to come and shotguns on their land,” pondered Klawitter. “That’s why there has to be some sort of bond and connection of trust. I always touch base before and after the hunt to make sure everything is still okay to come hunt and to give them the report after our hunt, as well.” Perhaps one of the biggest lessons in Hunting 101 is how to hunt safely. “Being aware of your target and what lies behind and around it is critically important,” said Klawitter. “Once a shot is fired, you can’t take it back.”

“After I take youth hunters out, I always have them write a ‘thank you’ note to all of the landowners. Some of these notes are very heartfelt, and they write down in words what it was like to harvest their very first deer, which is rewarding as well to some.” -Derek Klawitter
For a cumulative couple of hours, Jordan and John say they were talked through various safety measures. “While firearm safety and hunting safety have a lot of overlap, hunting safety has other factors that require additional cognisance,” said Jordan. “From handling knives, interacting with large animals, and safely storing game meat, there isn’t a moment to get careless.” After spending about an hour in a deer blind located in a treeline and the edge of a field, the sun was beginning to set on their time behind the barrel.
42 |
“Hunting was really hard and not at all a shooting fish-in-a-barrel type of experience,” said John. “We almost didn’t get a shot in before sundown.” They moved half a mile or so from the blind, near a soybean field, and that’s where John took aim. “My shot was a ‘stalk and shoot’ from 250 yards and was pretty difficult,” explained John. “I had a two-to-three-second window to shoot before the deer disappeared. With a little luck in the wind, it was very quick.”

“The team from the Outdoor Campus and South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks really took the time to show us the ropes, from applying to hunting to dressing the meat. Without them, I don’t think I would have ever had the guts to jump into this rewarding and seriously complicated sport. They were so friendly and wanted to really make sure we understood each step.” -John Snyder
Top 5 Takeaways Here are the top five things Klawitter wants the participants in Hunting 101 to take away from the experience, in his words.
» Confidence “I want hunters to be confident to hunt on their own after this experience.”
» Tradition “Hunting is all about family and friend time. I want people to carry on this and make their own annual hunting trips, thus carrying on the tradition.”
» Safety “Once a shot is fired, you can’t take it back.”
» Secret Recipes “Wild game prepared properly is some of the best and most healthy table fare available.”
» Outdoor Recreation “Hunting is a great reason to just go out and see nature.”

After verifying the success and efficiency of John’s shot, the trio harvested the game. “A deer can provide 30 to 60 pounds of meat,” said Klawitter. “I personally make most of my deer into burger, as it can be used in everything from spaghetti to chili.”
“For anyone new to the sport, I would 100% recommend it,” said Jordan. “You will be able to go into your first hunt armed with a greater respect for the animal, the sport, and the culture of safety required to make a hunt successful.”

Bearded Buffalo Trading Co. by Alana Snyder Jeremy and Ashleigh Roemen were intrigued when they began to take notice of unique and modern resorts in northern Minnesota. The two say they had been looking for a business opportunity to eventually build equity over time. “Ultimately, we decided we wanted to keep our roots in South Dakota, and we started to look at resorts on the market in the Black Hills,” said Jeremy. “After looking at three to four properties, we decided on this one.”

“Everything in the hills is a very manageable drive from our property, and you don’t have to spend your entire day driving to see all the Black Hills has to offer.” - Jeremy Roemen
The property right outside of Hill City on Highway 385, which includes eight cabins and 13 RV sites, was in rough shape when the Roemens took over. The vacation rentals and campground were dubbed Bearded Buffalo Resort. “The biggest reason we purchased the property was because of its awesome location. Hill City is called the ‘heart of the hills’ because it’s right in the middle of everything,” said Jeremy. “We’re right by Mount Rushmore, Keystone, Hill City, Sheridan Lake, and Lake Pactola.” Soon after, merchandise also became a big factor inside and outside of the 18 acres, called Bearded Buffalo Trading Co. This included hats, shirts, and more.

The idea behind the brand Bearded Buffalo came from a mixture of Ashleigh and her brother toying around with beard balm with a similar name and the family’s love of attending the annual Buffalo Roundup event at Custer State Park.
“The cabins are virtually brand new. We put in new beds, cabinets, and vanities to give the property a fresh start,” said Jeremy.
“We had such a great time at the event, and we loved the idea of using the buffalo for our brand,” said Jeremy. “Those things in combination made the name stick.”
Along with the cabins and RV hookups, there is a General Store on campus with South Dakota merchandise and Bearded Buffalo Trading Co. merchandise and marketing partnerships, like a Bearded Buffalo coffee from Coffea Roasterie out of Sioux Falls.
Knowing they had work ahead of them, the Roemens completely gutted seven of the eight cabins and renovated everything down to the drywall.
“The General Store is currently open Wednesday to Sunday 4-8 p.m. We have everything from soda, to snacks, to our apparel, and more,” said Jeremy.

In the same building is also a quaint bar to order local craft beer or domestics on tap or cans, and guests can order a pizza if guests are hungry. The “jewel” of the resort is the historic log cabin, which Jeremy calls “a true Black Hills original.” While keeping close to its original state, there have been updates like a propane fireplace in the 100-year-old living room, and a large jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. “The log cabin is by far our most popular cabin. People love it because it has such a great ‘Black Hills’ vibe to it,” said Jeremy. “It was built in the 1930s, but has been fully updated with a washer and dryer, dishwasher, and a full kitchen. We also finished out the upstairs to add two additional bedrooms.”

Hang Out WitH Mistie Caldwell by Dawn Geertsema In 2008, Visit Spearfish, Inc. began to help bring visitors to the various attractions in the area and highlight what makes the town special. “They were looking for one organization to bring synergy among all of the community-leading organizations to work toward a better Spearfish,” said Mistie Caldwell. Caldwell shares a handful of the reasons she loves her town.

Awaiting the opening of our eleventh coffee shop in Spearfish—we love our brews—both coffee and beer. And who can’t love another place for Pumpkin Spice [Lattes]?” -Mistie Caldwell
Capturing Community My office is the former Bank of Spearfish from the 1920s and is on the Spearfish Historical Society’s walking tour. That in itself makes it the coolest place to be every day. My prized possession inside the office is our Termesphere. We have one in the visitor’s center and one on the clock tower outside of the building. Dick Termes is a Spearfish icon, and his gallery is a must see.
Constantly Caffeinated You will rarely see me without a cup of coffee in hand; Spearfish is home to 10 coffee shops, currently. I never turn down a cup of good coffee, but I do have a daily date with the oldest coffee shop in Spearfish, Common Grounds. I’m a bit partial to the owner, my cousin Corey Brost and his wife, Kelli. I hear they come from good stock.

My other daily date is with Spearfish Canyon. I start and end my day with a “decompression drive” to Bridal Veil Falls. It’s only 5.8 miles from town. I go up just after sunrise, play a couple of games of cribbage on my phone, listen to the sound of the water echoing off the canyon walls, and hope to see my mountain goat friends, if they are feeling social. I take my cribbage and my canyon drives seriously.
Coffee isn’t the only brew I choose. I’m a sucker for a Raspberry Kolsch at Sawyer Brewing, and am equally a sucker for their patio seating overlooking Spearfish Creek. The Canyon Cream Ale is my go to from Spearfish’s original brewery, Crow Peak Brewing [Company]. And I’ll never turn down a Yellow Jacket Light Ale from Spearfish Brewing [Company]. Afterall, it’s the official beer of Black Hills State University Athletics.
“
Take Me Out to the Ball Game We are a bat-and-ball sport family. In our free time, you can find us cheering on Black Hills State University Softball; I have a crush on one of the volunteer assistant coaches (who might be my husband, Jeff). [We also are frequently] spending the day at a Spearfish Sasquatch baseball game.

Palm Garden Thai Cuisine by Dawn Geertsema

efore Palm Garden Thai Cuisine opened in Aberdeen in March of this year, the building had nearly 90 years of history as other businesses. “The Palm Garden opened in 1932 as the Palm Garden House of Chicken,” said Karla Stangl. “It is a historical building with loads of history in it.”

The first owners and the first business were around for 50 years before the building became part of a trust and was rented out as an antique store. “I turned it back into the Palm Garden Café and Chocolate Shoppe in 2007,” she said. Unfortunately, Stangl ended up closing about a year ago due to the pandemic. Aberdeen welcomed its first Thai restaurant when Saw Jack, a refugee from Myanmar, opened Palm Garden Thai Cuisine.

“[Our] goal is to share good Thai food with Aberdeen,” said Jack. “He worked for a Thai restaurant near Saint Paul, MN, before coming here to try to open his own,” explained Stangl. One of the 10 appetizer options is an order of the Fresh Spring Rolls, which are made with chicken, shrimp, lettuce, carrots, mint, cilantro, and noodles. There are, of course, the classic Pork Egg Rolls and Veggie Egg Rolls and an option to order Cream Cheese Wontons. “Everything is fresh and cooked to order, even soups,” said Jack. Pad Lawn is one of the most popular entrées and is made with stir-fried mixed vegetables and a choice of chicken, pork, mock duck, beef, shrimp, veggie, or tofu. The vegetables include onions, carrots, cabbage, green beans, broccoli, bell peppers, mushrooms, and celery. Among Jack’s Chef Selection menu items is Karapao Mussel. A spicy dish, Karapao Mussel is made with jalapeños, fresh mushrooms, onions, and shell-less mussels.

Along with other classics, like Beef and Broccoli, Chicken Curry, and Wonton Soup, Palm Garden Thai Cuisine offers Pad Thai and Sesame Chicken entrées. Pad Thai is made with stir-fried rice noodles, egg, bean sprouts, and a choice of protein. The dish is served with peanut and lemon. Jack adds that the recipe for Sesame Chicken is “breaded chicken breast in a tangy sauce, garnished with steamed broccoli and sesame seeds.” “The food is very authentic,” added Stangl. “Many customers come in and are a little intimidated because they are unfamiliar with Thai Cuisine, but they always leave happy.”

by Dawn Geertsema “We’re gearing up for different beers for fall,” said Dave Welling, owner and founder of One Legged Pheasant Brewery. “We’re doing Oktoberfest, stouts, bourbon barrel aged, and things of that nature to get ready for the colder weather.” Located in Aberdeen, One Legged Pheasant opened in September of 2018. “We’re the only production brewery in Aberdeen. When you come in, you can relax, chill out, have a nice craft beer, and have a good time.” From the taproom that has nine tap beers, the brewing setup can be seen. A back room also has space for events. “We have a clean, industrial atmosphere,” said Welling. “We like to back that up with a friendly, informative staff, which is all family.” Welling and his daughter tag team running the taproom. This month, One Legged Pheasant is celebrating its third anniversary and joining Visit Aberdeen in the celebration of Oktoberfest on October 23. Referencing the origin of the word pheasant, Welling says that he’s brewing the same recipe for Oktoberfest, Cocktoberfest. “We’re going to be full blown set up here, serving that beer, and I’ll be backing it up with another german beer called Dark Helmet,” he said.+

Nancy Tapken by Dawn Geertsema “Broad Cast Theatre was born in 2019, out of a conversation with fellow co-founder Beth Olsen,” said Nancy Tapken. The pair was groveling about how roles for female actresses in the Sioux Falls area are few and far between, when they stumbled onto the idea of starting the Broad Cast Theatre. “We asked Jill Johnson and Julie Sauer, who had both done Calendar Girls with us at Sioux Empire Community Theatre to join us, and performed our first show, Love, Loss and What I Wore a few months later,” said Tapken. “Sue Martens, who was also in Calendar Girls, joined us shortly thereafter, and we’ve been together ever since.”

I STARTED WITH THE THEATRE BECAUSE… my parents were both involved with the Sioux Falls Community Playhouse. I watched a lot of rehearsals and always ran lines with my mom. I did my first show at playhouse at age 10 and was hooked. I love figuring out who a character is, their backstory, their traits, etc. You can never actually be them, but how close can you get? That’s a great challenge.
THE BEST PART OF MY JOB IS… on Broadly Speaking… has been writing part of the script and putting the flow of the show together. I like to say “everything’s a monologue.” But just because it can be a monologue doesn’t mean it should be. Someone said you shouldn’t put your life out there for public consumption until you’ve really put it to rest for yourself. That’s been a good guideline.
MY FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND MY LEISURE TIME IS… bike riding, going to the gym (yes, really), people watching for the next great monologue idea, and writing pieces that might never see the light of day.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE PROJECTS HAS BEEN… Broadly Speaking… and other B.S. because it has a lot of life moments poured into it. Because the cast wrote the show, when the audience laughs or nudges the person next to them, it’s always kind of a Sally Field moment to know they really like it.

CUSTOMERS COME TO SHOWS LOOKING FOR... what Jill verbalized best as "connections." The audience comes looking to connect. I think they want to see their own experiences reflected on stage. The more personal a play is, the more universal it is. I DON’T DO THIS ALONE… Beth, Jill, Julie, and Sue each bring their own style to the show and their unique contributions to the company. Randy Ruud is advising and helping us with sound. Multiple people read the script and offered feedback early on. Debbi Jones from Monstrous Little Theatre was very helpful at the beginning of our journey. It truly takes a village. SOMETHING WE’RE DOING RIGHT NOW THAT I’M EXCITED ABOUT IS… Broadly Speaking… continues to evolve. That workin-progress aspect means the show might be slightly different from night-to-night, which keeps us on our toes. We’ve also just purchased a sound system, which increases our ability to reach different audiences. WHEN I WALK AROUND DOWNTOWN, ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACES TO STOP BY IS… you can’t go wrong stopping in to Zandbroz Variety or Sticks and Steel. SOMETHING THAT IS INFLUENCING MY WRITING RIGHT NOW IS… the daily wackiness all around us. But I love listening to and reading Brené Brown and Caroline Myss.

“Many artists tend to give every single person the same brows. I don’t do that. I give my clients brows based on their facial structure, personal style, and preference. Everyone is unique.” -Kay Steiger
LIFESTYLE
605 profile
Kay Steiger by Dawn Geertsema “Vishnu Bunny Tattoo & Piercing has been able to help people feel great about themselves in the past through tattoo and piercing,” said microblade artist Kay Steiger. “They have expanded into microblading to be able to fit more of their clients’ desires.” In the realm of permanent cosmetics, microblading is a semi-permanent tattoo technique for more defined and sculpted eyebrows. “I love how people’s eyes stand out after they have their brows done,” said Steiger, sharing her favorite part of her job. “It’s amazing how something like a great set of eyebrows can bring focus to your eyes and their beauty.” Steiger answered some questions about her field and her place at Vishnu Bunny.
5 QUESTIONS WITH STEIGER WHAT DO YOU OFFER CLIENTS? At this time, I offer microblading, ombré brows, and combo brows. Combo brows are a mix of microblading and ombré. However, I will expand in the future to more things, such as permanent eyeliner, lip tinting, and more.
WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT VISHNU BUNNY? It’s important to ensure that wherever you get any form of tattoo, traditional tattoo or semi-permanent tattoo, such as microblading, that you are somewhere with your safety in mind. Coming into Vishnu Bunny for your microblading needs is a perfect option, because they specialize in hygiene and have the highest standards when it comes to reducing the risks of any sort of infection. Your (and our) safety is the utmost priority.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN YOUR CRAFT? Growing up I was always insecure about how I looked. I knew I wanted to help others feel gorgeous because no one should have to feel that way. I became a makeup artist and truly enjoyed the joy I would see on my clients' faces when I completed my work with them. I never really knew much about microblading before I decided to have my own brows done. I fell in love with the process and continued educating myself on it and eventually took a class to become a microblade artist.
WHY SHOULD PEOPLE USE YOUR SERVICES? I truly care about my clients. Many have become my friends, and I love cheering them on in all the aspects of their lives.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE TATTOO PROCESS? I have been able to help transform people’s lives who have had illness or grooming mistakes.
