01 Bagket _ Bicycle Basket = Bag + Rack
Description Starting from the observation of my mom riding our dog with bicycle, I found that the weight of our dog can easily break traditional bicycle baskets. On the other hand, to carry a pet basket with bicycle is terribly inconvenient. As a result, my partner and I came out with the idea of the combination of bag and bicycle basket to replace the traditional bicycle basket, and we were excited to find that it also works perfectly for shopping usage.

| 3 of the 20 things that need to be improved
2
3 1. bottles scatter in the bathroom 2. hard to zip with single hand 3. ugly tissue box
The topic in the class this time was to find 20 things that need to be improved. Among them, I chose the issue to design bicycle basket for riding pets since I have stronger emotion to this topic and I’ve always wanted to improve her life quality.
The traditional basket is too small to carry pets. On the other hand, the baskets break easily since the weight of regular pets are too heavy to them.
04
01 Bagket_Bicycle Basket = Bag + Rack
Goal The goal is to design a bicycle relative product for carrying heavy loads. (ex: riding pets or shopping)
Research 1. Premium Research of Commercial Products
After deciding the goal of our design, my partner and I browsed the Internet and found the product above which perfectly meets our need.
05
01 Bagket
Research 1-2. Field work We brought our dog to the pet shop that sells the same product as we found to test the product. As soon as my dog stood in the pet bag, we found several drawbacks: 1. When placing on bikes, it’s not firmly enough. 2. The pet bag itself is Too Heavy to carry. Reasons: Because the bag is movable, it only uses the rack shown above plus nylon strings to fix the bag on the bike. While our dog stood on it, the bag started to slip and when we moved the bike, it shook seriously. Besides, when we put the bag on our shoulder, it was really heavy because all those racks were in the bag.
The Breakthrough Point - Separating Basket into TWO PARTS One day my partner and I were discussing our design, and suddenly he came out with the idea: Why not separate the heavy part from the pet bag and leave it on the bike as a bracket. I found it perfectly make sense since no matter when we go shopping or carrying a pet, as soon as we arrived our destination, we do not need the function of the bracket part and it suddenly become a heavy loading to us. Hence our design goal has become more clearly - separating bicycle basket into bracket and bag. 06
01 Bagket _Bicycle Basket = Bag + Rack
Sketches of the Rack
According to the design concept, I developed several different shapes of racks. Through the discussion with my advisor and partner, the outlook gradually change from sharp to smooth, solid to light. We approach our goal step by step .
07
01 Bagket
Sketches of the Bag
A very important characteristic of the design of the bag is the four angles of the bag need to fit the four props of the rack.
The second characteristic of the bag is that it can be folded into a tiny pocket which serves as an inner pocket in the bag.
As for the racks, I developed several types of the bags. These are the basic type and I designed three functional types which I will introduce them in the coming pages.
08
01 Bagket _Bicycle Basket = Bag + Rack
Design Concept Bagket is a design of bracket and bag. Compared with traditional bicycle baskets, it has bigger capacity, firmer structure and less weight to carry meanwhile provides a new style of life for bicycle users. It includes a bracket and four functional bags. The four functions are Basic Type, Going Shopping, Riding Pet, and Going Picnic.)

How We Decide the Size

2
mini steel wire model
3D rendering model
3
real size wood model
These three steps showed how we decided the size of our bracket. We modified it step by step. At first, we made a mini model with steel wire to feel the proportion of the bracket. Second, my partner and I did Research 2 (shown in the following box) and then I used the result of it to build a 3D modeling with accurate size. Finally, we made a real size wooden model with strings which represent the metal part and it was used to explain our design to the tube-bending factory technician.
Research 2. Bicycle Front Handle and Tire Size
Sample: 50
In order to determine the size of the rack, my partner and I sampled 50 bicycles in a park near my home in order to get the average size. Abandon 5 extreme samples (Folding Bicycle), the result of our research is 48.6 (L) * 28.2 (W) * 38.7 (H) unit: centimeter

Manufacture - Discussion X Decision After deciding the way to process our rack, my partner looked up on the Internet and found a metal-bending factory. We immediately went there and discussed with the professional technician to decide which kind of material and which size to choose to meet our needs, that is, FIRM and LIGHT. We also talked about the purpose of our design and brought a real size model made of wood and strings. The technician told us that to be lighter; of course the thinner the better, but at the same time we should notice the structure of the bending metal tube. After all these communication, we decided to choose 9mm solid stainless steel tube to make our rack.

02 Time&Light_A Light About Memories
Description Going through a broken relationship is hard for everybody. Does memory just gone away as time went by or how does it influence us? In this product, I started from discover how memories influence us as time goes by. Since in Chinese, “時光” is a word represents time and light, I finally come out with the idea of making a light of time and memories with traditional Taiwanese patterned glass which we have commonly seen when we were little as a symbol of memory.
Research 1. The patterned glass resource 2. How to process the glass 3. Reading the book of Haruki Murakami
21
02 Time&Light
Goal To discover the relationship among time, light, and memories, and represent it by means of making it into a real product.
Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and his Years of Pilgrimage Haruki Murakami 2013 tTjis is The book that influenced my thought about time and memories. There’s one sentence in the book---”The memory of being rejected by those dearest friends has never gone. Just like tides, sometimes it goes far away to the end of my sight ; sometimes it comes near to me and seems to submerge to my nose.” (not official translation)
22
02 Time&Light_A Light About Memories
Inspiration Taiwanese patterned glass is the common memories of all Taiwanese over age 10. Once a Taiwanese sees the patterned glass, we will immediately recognize it. This is the reason why I choose this material to represent memories.
23
02 Time&Light
Concept
We were originally as blank as a piece of paper without any scar.
Untill one day, there’s a memory shaped us, and changed how we look like.
As time goes by, more and more memories shaped us into how we appear today. triangles represent sharp memories
24
02 Time&Light_A Light About Memories
Sketch
The triangle parts will be made of the patterned glasses.
Other surfaces will be made by 3 mm transparent glasses
25
02 Time&Light
Modeling At first, I tried to use paper strings to make the model, however, I realized that I couldn’t measure the accurate size due to the thickness of the glass (3mm). As a result, I changed my material into foam board, so that I can precisely make a real-size model. Finally, I used a light tube to see the proportion of the whole product, and made some slight adjustment.

Make It Real
Time spent: 52 hrs Advisor: Mr. Wong, Yi-Chun Material: glass, copper leaf tape, soldering tin Skill: Glass cutting, edge covered with copper leaf and soldering glasses with tin
The reason why I choose this kind of process to make my light is that I wanted to reach the shape I designed (cubes with sharp cutting surface) with the patterned glasses with the thickness of 3mm-3.5mm. Through the skill of glass cutting, bounding the edge of glass with copper leaf and finally soldering the glasses together with tin, I can easily have a firm and safe structure of lights and meanwhile maintain the spirit of my design.

04 Robotic Arm _ Manufacturing Experience
Description Encouraged by my boss when I was a trainee in Automotive Research and Testing Center, I started to make a robotic arm with the reference of the book ” Robots and Microcontroller ”. The main purpose of this project is to know the properties of acrylic meanwhile be familiar with how to manipulate driller and miller by manufacturing a robotic arm by myself.

53
04 Robotic Arm
Goal The goal is to be familiar with manipulating miller and drill and the manufacture of acrylic by making a robotic arm by myself.
Materials There are two mainly materials of this project. They are servo motors and 3mm transparent acrylics.
Reference Book Robots and Microcontroller (Mr. Wang, Yuan-Sean, 2010) All the design and instructions are from this book. Include material selection, precise size of design and the programming part.
54
04 Robotic Arm _ Manufacturing Experience
Manufacture Experience It took me about half a year to make this robotic arm in my extra curriculum time, but what I’ve learned has weighted far more than the time I spent. From being a little bit afraid of those machines to manipulating them by myself skillfully, I’ve learned the material properties of acrylic, how to use the tools to improve my working efficiency and how to assemble each part of the arm.
Tips that I learned When drilling to the end, it’s better to slow down your speed of the driller; otherwise, it’s easier to break at the round of the hole. (As shown at the prictue right.)
Tips that I learned Acrylic is really fragile at the edge when drilling but sometimes we still need to drill it at the edge. I found out that by changing the order of the process (drill first and then mill it), can I avoid the acrylic from being crashed by driller.

Details
The hardest part to make of the whole arm is the gears. In order to fit the two gears smoothly together, the distances between each tip should be precisely equal which is a challenge for hand-made process.
There are totally six joints on the arm. These are the key points of the movement of the arm hence needed to be made carefully. 1 - 3. From straight to bend 4 - 6. From open to close

Description Sleep behavior is an art work and this idea came from my friend Sally. She was a craft student and this is her final project in the college. As for me, I provided my skills in electronics and firmware programming to aid her represents the effects she wanted in this project.
Research 1. LED Working Voltage, Current and Lightness 2. Arduino Diecimila Datasheet 3. Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM)
63
05 Sleep Behavior
Discussion After several times of communication, I realized her needs and suggested her to use LED lights and Microcontroller to mimic those sleep behaviors. We discussed several times. And these discussions were about the color, lightness of LED and how they shine (frequency, shine or gradually become light).
→ We were testing the lightness and function of the light with her clay pillow.

05 Sleep Behavior _ Technical Support
Firmware Before I started to program, there were two things that I needed to study. First is the characteristic of the microcontroller and second is the theory of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM).
Research 2. Arduino Diecimila Microcontroller ATmega168 Operating Voltage 5V Input Voltage 7-12 V (recommended) Input Voltage (limits) 6-20 V Digital I/O Pins 14 (6 provide PWM output) Analog Input Pins 6 DC Current per I/O Pin 40 mA DC Current for 3.3V Pin 50 mA
67
05 Sleep Behavior
In this case, PWM was used to let the light brighten and dim gradually. Since there are only 1 and 0 signals for LED, hence we needed PWM to mimic the effect.
Research 3. Pulse-Width Modulation Pulse-width modulation (PWM), or pulse-duration modulation (PDM), is a modulation technique that conforms the width of the pulse, formally the pulse duration, based on modulator signal information. Although this modulation technique can be used to encode information for transmission, its main use is to allow the control of the power supplied to electrical devices, especially to inertial loads such as motors.v
68
05 Sleep Behavior _ Technical Support
Firmware There are five different functions. The most uncontrollable part is using PWM to mimic the behavior of breath. Although I could test them one by one in different files, I still needed to compose them into one file finally, and the multi-control of period was the biggest challenge I met.
69
05 Sleep Behavior
Another key point in programming these behaviors is that when our discussion became more detail, there are more files in my database. As a result, it is also important to have a clear readme file to manage these codes.
