from the rondy president Dear Alaskans and Guests, Welcome to Fur Rendezvousl! Now in it’s 82nd year, it has grown from a local sporting event to a world-renowned winter festival that attracts visitors from around our state, and around the world. A full schedule is contained within this guide to help you plan your time enjoying events that span the ages, traditions, and culture of Alaska. Fur Rendezvous’ continued success would not be possible without our community partners, members, sponsors, and volunteers. This kind of tradition cannot continue without intent and assistance! Each individual that participates is responsible for the success of Rondy – by purchasing a signature pin, participating in events, merchandise and memberships, you are keeping the festival going for future generations.

keystone kops Keystone Kops of the University Kiwanis, Anchorage
In the mid-sixties the University Kiwanis came up with the idea of being Keystone Kops, enforcing the tradition of having to wear a Fur Rondy pin or button when a person is in attendance at any of the winter festival activities. Their Kiwanis club constructed a couple of portable jails where they good-naturedly incarcerate “villains” who are not wearing a Fur Rondy pin or button. One way to stay out of jail (or get back out) is to purchase a pin or button from the Keystone Kops who, coincidently, sell them! This project is their largest fundraiser. They receive a percentage of the pin and button sales for their efforts, netting approximately $10,000 to $20,000 annually. These proceeds go back into the community via their many projects – predominantly to the four Key Clubs and a KCI club they sponsor each year. Starting around Thanksgiving, they staff a pin sales table each weekend at different locations throughout Anchorage to sell the current year’s pins. Also, members individually sell the pins and buttons through the winter months as do some of their Key Clubs. During the actual Fur Rondy festival they are on the streets downtown, in local establishments, in the parade, and at other events actively selling pins. They also have their own pin design, new each year, which they sell at the same time. Although this is their largest fundraiser, it is also a community service project. Over the years the Keystone Kops have become recognized as the face of the Fur Rondy celebration. They appear in their Kop outfits (looking like British Bobbies with many Fur Rondy pins on their coats) at many public functions to advertise the event. They also appear on television raiding the newscasts to arrest local newscasters who do not have a Fur Rondy pin. All of this is done in good-natured fun to promote the winter carnival. During the event they serve as ambassadors for the festival, providing information and directions to many visitors. They are in hundreds of photos, posing with visitors, from around the world, who want their picture taken with a Keystone Kop. For more information, or to learn how you can join the fun and become a Keystone Kop, visit www. anchorageuniversitykiwanis.org.

2017 fur rendezvous world
Overview
Follow the race on KHAR!
Begun in 1946 as part of Fur Rondy, the World Championship Sled Dog Races have become a cornerstone event of the festival. Mushers from all over Alaska, the nation, and the world participate for the title of fastest sprint mushing team. The race is held over three days; the fastest total time recorded wins. Countless people and entities support this race: The Municipality of Anchorage supplies police officers, snow fencing, and snow placement and removal for the street portion. The Alaskan Sled Dog & Racing Association, or ASDRA, grooms and sets snow fencing for the other 21 miles of trails. Fur Rondy raises the purse and promotes the race. ASDRA volunteers manage and operate the race. Sponsors also support the race.

championship sled dog racestm The trail follows 4th Ave. east to Cordova St. where mushers turn south. At the bottom of Cordova Hill the trail moves to the bike/ski trails along Anchorage’s greenbelt. Here the teams are challenged by long dark culverts under the Seward Highway and Lake Otis Parkway. The trail has two large pedestrian overpasses over Northern Lights Blvd. and Tudor Road separated by a trail through a popular dog park. Six miles into the trail the teams hit the designated sled dog trails of Tozier Track. Fourteen miles later the trail again heads back across the Tudor Road pedestrian overpass to downtown Anchorage.

Be a Good Spectator • • • • • • • •
Find a good viewpoint behind the trail edge. Teams leave at one or two minute intervals and often are closely spaced. Faster teams may have even passed a competitor. Look for dogs running well with their heads and tails down showing concentration on their effort. Tug lines will be tight. Be aware that sudden movements or f lashbulbs may startle dogs and break their concentration. You will see the head and tail go up if this occurs. Mushers will only ask for help if needed. Dogs often are shy of unfamiliar people. Getting entangled in a dog team can be very hazardous for you and the dogs. A dog team traveling at up to 20mph takes up to 50 feet to come to a stop. Sled dogs run very quietly. You may not know they are coming until you hear, “Trail!” or worse, you are entangled in the lines because the musher could not see around a corner. Your pet dog will not enjoy watching sled dog racing events. A fast moving team will frighten most dogs. They also are a distraction to the racing or training dog team. Do not bring your family pets to dog mushing events. www.furrondy.net

collector pin & button artists About Rondy Pins and Buttons A tradition since the early days of Rondy, the Fur Rondy collector pins are an integral part of Rondy. Representing the spirit of the festival and celebration of the ten days of Rondy, these pins are worn across the globe. Artists compete to design the official pin and local students do the same in a booster button contest. These pins become collector’s items.
2016 PIN Designer: Tara Gildow Tara Gildow was born in Anchorage, Alaska, where the landscape and wildlife outside the door inspired her imagination. She graduated from Dimond High School in 2000, and went on to pursue a bachelor of fine art in painting from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR. The Fur Rendezvous pins were something Tara always looked forward too, growing up in Anchorage. Tara has been honored to have her designs chosen for 2 previous collector’s pins and is humbled and grateful her design to be chosen for 2017 as well. Tara chose the red fox as her design for the 2017 pin, an amazing canine that calls Alaska its home. The fox is surrounded by beautiful purple lupine that compliments the foxes copper fur and reminds us of the long, sunny days that await us in summer. Tara spends most of her time daydreaming about working on her next commission painting or illustration work, as well as listening to the stories her 5 year old daughter has to tell her.
2016 Booster Button Designer:
Maia Brown Maia is a 6th-grade Bayshore Eagle, who enjoys writing poetry, conducting science experiments, hiking Anchorage’s coastal trails, and cuddling with her two cats, Rigel and Pliny. She has been playing the violin since first grade and has recently taken up the cello as part of her school’s orchestra. Fur Rondy is one of her favorite times of the year for the winter carnival, fireworks, and all the people who gather to celebrate. Her design was inspired by the spirit of togetherness that Fur Rondy extends beyond the holiday season.

Queen and Princesses
Lord and Lady Trapper
The first Fur Rendezvous Queen was selected by the most raffle ticket sales in 1936. Over the years, the program has evolved to be an elite selection of young women age 18-29 who compete for the title with interview, resume, community service & public speaking. The Queen serves as an ambassador of Fur Rondy during the festival and community events throughout the year.
Lord & Lady Trapper are outstanding citizens in our community who have contributed to the success of our city through business, community involvement and service to Fur Rendezvous. This distinctive honor dates back to the first Lord Trapper in 1981 and first Lady Trapper in 1997 and are chose each year by former Lords and Ladies.
Heritage Ambassador The Heritage Ambassador was added in 2016. She is an outstanding Alaska Native young woman selected from the Queen candidates and serves to help preserve the tradition and Alaska Native spirit. The Heritage Ambassador will serve along with the Royal Court throughout the year.
King and Queen Regent Selected from the membership of the Pioneers of Alaska, the King and Queen Regent represent Alaska’s tradition of adventure.
