November 30, 2019 will be remembered as a day that transformed and bound-together our community. The earthquake is one of the most impactful events in our history, and the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce could not hold our Festival without acknowledging those affected. In that spirit, we take this opportunity to celebrate the resiliency and generosity of spirit our community has shown over these past months. Our sincerest hope is the 34th annual Bear Baw Festival can bring us together and help restore some sense normalcy. Your Festival leadership consists of Current Chamber President, Colin Fay, and President-Elect, Kelsie Sullivan. Both were raised in the Chugiak-Eagle River community, and have nearly 40 years of combined experience in Bear Paw Festival logistics. This year we are excited to use that experience to bring some significant changes to the Festival layout and schedules, with a goal to make everyone’s time at the Festival more enjoyable. The schedule has been completely redesigned (check out the insert in the middle of the guide) so be sure to take a look; as there are new dates, times, and locations for several Festival staple events. During the week, you can experience the Bear Paw awards luncheon, our Bear Paw Paints event and our newest the Cornhole Tournament plus the much-loved Golden Wheel Carnival. As the weekend approaches, join us at the Teddy Bear Picnic, Classic Car Show, Grand Parade, Slippery Salmon Olympics, Human Foosball, Vendor Court, and the (expanded) second annual Bear Paw Live concert series and beer garden in the park. Events will be ongoing all weekend in the downtown area, from the middle of Business Boulevard to the Eagle River Commons Park. At the Bear Paw Festival, you can be the star on stage, set a personal best on your 5K run, treat yourself to some scrumptious fair food, and enjoy the overall sights and sounds Chugiak-Eagle River has to offer. Registration of many events takes place here and folks who have signed up online for an event should check in here. The tent will be manned throughout the weekend. Bear Paw Photography Contest The Bear Paw Photography Contest brought to you by Gutierrez Photography and the Eagle River Camera Club. The contest is open to all Alaskan’s and entries were accepted until June 5th. (If you missed out this year be sure to get in next year!) Odor EaterS Rotten Sneaker Contest What’s blowing in the wind at the Bear Paw Festival? It’s the Great Alaska Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest! This event is open to any child 5 –15 years of age wearing a pair of sneakers. The worse the better! Kids and judges go toes to nose in a fiendish frenzy of foul and fetid footwear for the title of the best of the worst! The contest takes place Friday, July 12th at 1p.m. at the Eagle River Commons. Registration begins at 12:15p.m. and the first 25 contestants receive an official T-shirt. The winner receives a year’s supply of Odor-Eaters products, fun gifts, trophy, and their champion rotten sneakers may be permanently enshrined in the Odor Eaters Hall of Fumes. Parents need to accompany kids to sign an event release form.

Slippery Salmon Olympics
Just picture it… hula hoops, orange cones and a very slippery salmon! Throw in a glass of soda on a tray and you’ve got a race! Teams of two race against the clock for bragging rights and a real cool trophy! Slippery Salmon Olympics will be held at 1:15p.m. Saturday, Feel and hear the thrill of a crowd while you run, walk or skip your way through the streets of Eagle River when you join in the Bear Paw Classic 5K JULY 13th. The proceeds from this hilarious event are given to our Chugiak-Eagle River Foundation ~ providing academic scholarships race at 10:30a.m. on Saturday - July 13th. Coordinated by Cross Country Running & Ski Training Club, the race and grants to Chugiak-Eagle Nonprofits since 1995. Mercury’s Model T’s, Mustangs and more classics will be on hand Friday, July 12th from 6 – 9p.m. on Business Boulevard adjacent to Valley River Center. Check out some of the finest street machines in Alaska. Check out the Best Imports, Best Truck, Best Street Machine, Best Sports Car, and many more. STAGING INSTRUCTIONS - To access car show area, please turn onto Business Blvd at Taco Bell. You will be vetted into the car show venue from the North side of Business Blvd. Staging begins at 5:00p.m. There are no entry fees or admission for vehicles or for spectators. Registration is at the event. Business Blvd closes at 10a.m. & staging within the Road Closure will begin no earlier than 5pm. Please plan to arrive by 6pm and follow the stagers instructions on placement of your vehicle along Business Boulevard.
