Family finances: Empty cubicles? Many workers want to stay home Michael Korsh, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Kiplinger’s Money Power Millions of employees are returning to work as companies reopen their physical offices. But many employees are reluctant to return to the office — either because of pandemic-related concerns or because they’ve discovered they prefer working from home. A survey by FlexJobs.com found that 58% of workers said they’d look for a new job if they cannot continue remote work in their current role. But before you give notice, there are steps you can take to navigate changes to your work-

place — and your budget. If you want to continue working from home, you’ll need to negotiate that with your supervisor. But first, prepare talking points that highlight how your remote work will benefit your employer, says Toni Frana, a career coach at FlexJobs. Instead of explaining how working from home will help you, she says, focus on how it will increase your productivity. Your employer may also be more receptive to an arrangement in which you work remotely part of the time rather than full-time. In May, Google announced that it would adopt a hybrid work week, requiring in-person

office work for only three out of five days starting in September. Other companies, especially in the technology sector, are also developing hybrid work models. Still, while some companies are open to hybrid work schedules, others want their employees back in the office full-time. If your employer falls into that group, leverage your bargaining power, says Alison Green, author of “Ask a Manager: How to Navigate Clueless Colleagues, Lunch-Stealing Bosses and Other Tricky Situations at Work.” At a time when many com-

panies are struggling to fill open jobs, managers may be forced to be more receptive to your concerns, she says. Nearly 60% of Americans who worked from home at some point during the pandemic said it had a positive effect on their personal finances, according to a survey by Bankrate.com. People who were able to work remotely saved money on expenses such as transportation, lunches, workplace attire and child care, says Bankrate analyst Ted Rossman. To cut your back-towork costs, ask your employer if it plans to

offer — or reinstate — subsidies for parking or mass transit. If you have unused funds in a pretax commuter benefits account, make sure to use them. And now that you’ve learned how much money you can save by cooking at home, you may be inspired to start bringing your lunch to work. Body language is vital for interviews, even virtually Nonverbal communication can improve your chances with a prospective employer By Nina Wladkowski After you’ve handed in your application and resume but before you hear the words “you’re hired” comes that nerve-wracking, get-to-know-you encounter: the interview. Making a good impression is crucial and while interviewers will be listening to what you have to say, they’ll also be watching how you present yourself. With inter views being handled virtually more often, it can be easy to feel at home at, well, home, and let professional demeanor droop. Keeping some simple checks on posture in mind helps present your best self, even through the camera. Here are some tips to make sure your body language doesn’t

contradict what you’re saying about why you’re the right person for the job:

1. Posture

Prior to the interview, bend at the waist and take three to five deep breaths, then slowly raise into a standing position, letting your back naturally stack vertebrae upon vertebrae and finish by lifting your head, as if pulled by an invisible string from the top of your head. This simple, quick trick will have you standing tall and ready to rock the interview. Remember: your potential future employer will be watching you from the moment you walk in, or your camera turns on, so try to get all your jitters out early so you exude

confidence throughout the interview.

2. Eye Contact

Don’t stare down at your hands or the floor, but don’t get caught up staring at your own image relaying back to you, either. Even virtually, it’s important to maintain friendly, attentive eye contact when a question is being asked. When thinking of your answer, don’t be afraid to look elsewhere in the room, but be sure to look back at the interviewer upon finishing your reply. If there are multiple people during the interview, make sure to shift your glance between everyone, either in-person or on screen, and give each person attention.

3. Upper Body

Avoid slouching while sitting by keeping your back against the back of the chair and your shoulders relaxed. Sinking down in your chair is noticeable, even when you’re not in the same room. Try gesturing with your hands while speaking to show you are animated and engaged in your detailed answers to their questions, but be careful to not flail wildly.

4. Lower Body

Keeping your lower body in check will help your upper body naturally fall into position, and will work to keep you in the proper headspace. Rest your feet flat on the floor during the interview. If

you feel the urge to shift position and move your feet, cross at the ankle, but be wary of anything more—you don’t want to accidentally knee a table and throw off your A game, or your camera. Don’t tap or jiggle your foot or leg and distract not only yourself, but also those interviewing you from what a great person you’d be for the job.

5. Head and Mind

Communication is not just external; you subconsciously share your thoughts through your posture and even your expression. Before you head to the interview, take a few deep breaths and give yourself a mental check over. Run through your introduction and highlights

of why you’re the best fit for the job to give yourself a confidence boost before you meet your interviewer. Relaxing and thinking positive thoughts will help you hold your head high and enter the interview ready to take on the world.

6. Bonus Tip: Power Stances!

Take a moment before you even step in or sign on to the interview to give yourself one last boost with a quick power stance. Stand tall with your feet hip width apart and your hands on your hips, keeping your back and neck straight. Standing like this for even a minute can help boost your self-confidence and prepare you to face whatever questions come your way

Family finances: Job search advice for the classes of COVID-19 By Emma Patch, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Kiplinger’s Money Power Gen Zers and millennials who are new to the job market have faced unprecedented challenges in 2020 and 2021. Hiring has picked up as the economy reopens, but even so, the classes of 2020 and 2021 are entering one of the most depressed job markets in decades. Unemployment is high across the board, but people age 18 to 34 have been disproportionately affected, according to a recent Axios-Harris study. Onethird of people who are

18 to 34 have been laid off or placed on temporary leave, compared with 22% of those who are 35 to 49, and 15% of those who are 50 to 64, according to the study. But even in this environment, many companies still need employees, and firms are eager to hire recent college graduates. Even if you’re unable — or unwilling — to travel, keep an eye out for virtual networking events and remote job postings. “We have definitely seen an increase in remote postings as well as remote events,” says Christine Cruzvergara,

of Handshake, an online platform that connects recent graduates with employers. Steer clear of cluttered job-posting sites that will send you down a rabbit hole to out-ofdate or filled jobs. And you don’t have to pay an expensive service to get access to the jobs that are suited to your skills. Websites such as LinkedIn and Handshake allow you to filter your searches by location, industry and job type so you can connect with employers who are hiring. To access Handshake, you’ll need to sign in with your academic credentials

and have an .edu email address. Hiring is up in several employment categories, including delivery services, call centers, e-commerce warehouses and online tutors. Among major companies, Amazon fulfillment centers, Facebook product and engineering teams, and Nestlé factory/distribution and corporate sites are hiring. You can find a comprehensive list of companies hiring recent grads on Handshake’s 500 List, a compilation of the top 500 hiring employers, at https://learn. joinhandshake.com/ students/hiring-on-hand-
