DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION • MUNICIPALITY OF ANCHORAGE EDUCATION Bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration and Interdisciplinary Writing, Eastern Oregon University FAMILY TJ Embley, husband; Piper and Tater, bird dogs HOMETOWN/CURRENT CITY Anchorage WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN ALASKA AND WHY? Boating and camping in Prince William Sound. So many great activities and so little cell service. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? That would be this summer hiking in the Chugach State Park with my husband and our dogs. Tater, our male German Shorthaired Pointer was off trail exploring when he decided to high-five a porcupine. TJ loaded Tater up in the pack board and carried him down the mountain, so we could spend the rest of the afternoon with the great staff at Midnight Sun Animal Hospital and Emergency Care. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. “The Godfather of Alaska Volleyball” Virgil Hooe. Next to my parents there is not a single human that has influenced and shaped my character, values, and habits. On and off the volleyball court, Virgil taught skills and lessons that weave through my personal and professional life. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? Exploring! I just love to go. Count me in for a road trip or traveling abroad. FAVORITE QUOTE: “The person who says something is impossible should not interrupt the person who is doing it.” — Chinese Proverb
IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Since 2009, I have secured roughly $11.5 million in state and federal discretionary grants that have supported public transportation operating and capital projects throughout the community. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORKLIFE BALANCE? Work-life balance looks like different things at different times. When I’ve got that balance dialed you’ll find me active in my morning routine; which includes yoga, journaling, coffee, and time with my dogs. Another critical piece of maintaining that balance means I’m surrounded by people personally and professionally that I can rely on and trust.
The person who says something is impossible should not interrupt the person who is doing it.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Front Desk staff at the Alaska Athletic Club WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? Eat. Pray. Love by Elizabeth Gilbert or Wild by Cheryl Strayed.

I believe Hatcher Pass is one of the most beautiful places on our planet. I enjoy the green valleys and the dark granite in the summers. The rock climbing and berry picking are also some of Alaska’s finest. In the winters, the snow covered landscapes and beautiful. I’ve made many delightful memories with friends and family while hiking and climbing in the area.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? My most memorable Alaska experience is taking a self-guided trip up the West Buttress of Denali with my husband and four friends in May 2019. We spend months training and coordinating logistics to have a successful trip, and during training we hiked all over the Western Chugach. Unfortunately about halfway up, my husband experience altitude illness, so we turned around at Windy Corner. On Denali, most people camp all together with hundreds of others attempting to also summit. Since we need time to prepare to descend and coordinate with the rest of our team, we were able to make camp alone on the mountain. I was blessed to sit above the clouds, with just my husband, and enjoy the beauty of the Alaska Range. It truly felt like I was looking at heaven. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. I find it quite difficult to narrow down this list to one person as I’ve come to know so many respectable people throughout my life and career. In particular those leaders I see who consistently reflect service to others while maintaining their integrity earn the most respect. Both of my parents deserve respect for so many reasons; both of my mother and father are extremely hard working, giving to others, and funny. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? Spending time outdoors with my husband. Recently, I re-picked up my tennis racket, which is another sport I enjoy.
FAVORITE QUOTE “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” — Aristotle, Durant WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Tennis coach WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? Beyond Heroes by Kim Barnas or The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? The most rewarding community service I’ve participated in was a mission trip to Rosarito, Mexico, with Providence Health International. We built houses with the community, and I learned so much about what it means to be and see unification within a community while building homes. Locally, The Magic Yarn Project is a wonderful non-profit that started in Palmer and has shipped homemade yarn wigs all over the world. It is extremely rewarding to create these magical wigs and hear the stories of young children who are battling various illnesses, and to learn about the joy a little imagination can bring into their lives. For others wanting to get involved — the wigs are relatively easy, fun to make, and there’s usually a workshop coming up! IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? The most fulfilling work has been the implementation of a Medicare Shared Savings Program and creating an Accountable Care Organization for a health care system. For me, I found this work the most fulfilling because we were addressing the future delivery of healthcare, and we successfully developed a new operating company within an existing health system to do so. As healthcare leaders, we must look at ways to improve the overall health of the population, experience and access to care, and reduce costs. I find all work tied to this “triple aim” to be personally rewarding. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I’ve always followed the adage “work hard-play hard”. And, I’ll be listening to the advice of my fellow Top 40 cohort since this is an area where I have room for improvement! 7

Nov. 30t2018. Being on the air during the 7.0 earthquake that shook Anchorage. KGOT was one of the only radio stations that didn’t lose power, and we skipped our usual casual funny morning into a stream of information to the community. We stayed on and answered phone calls live on air, gave out valuable information to parents who just dropped off their kids at school and took a breath as a city not knowing what was coming next. Proudest day as a broadcaster to be there for my hometown in a time of need. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Know your worth. Choose a career that brings you joy every day. It’s ok to say “NO” sometimes. And marry someone who will let you play golf at any time.

IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Obtaining my master’s degree and getting my CPA so I could start my career BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORKLIFE BALANCE? Understand what your priorities are in this time in your life, so you can set the boundaries and adjust your focus. You can’t do everything and be everywhere, but if you have a laser focus on your priorities, you will have more clear direction. Don’t ever be afraid to ask for help or seek outside assistance, so you can have more time back.
You learn more from failure than from success. Don’t let it stop you. Failure builds character.
WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? I had many, but one of my most memorable is the Polar Bear Plunge for the Special Olympics of Alaska. I believe Alaskan community is very strong and generous, but it’s hard for most to find time to be involved. I always remind people that no matter how small the time or monetary contribution is, it adds up and has a real impact on our community.

My own backyard on a sunny, summer evening, with a beer, by the fire pit! But out on the water in Seward or anywhere there’s a view of Denali is good too. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? My whole life has been an Alaska experience, from riding around on a sled pulled by a snow machine, to taking my dad’s flag-stop train (he was with the Alaska Railroad for 42 years before retiring a few years ago) with my sisters to his off-the-grid cabin that was only accessible by rail, to seeing bears from the highway on my commute home. But despite being born and raised in Alaska, I had never seen whales until I was part of DOWL’s emerging leaders program a couple of years ago. We had one of our meetings in Juneau and took a whale-watching tour as our teambuilding activity. The humpbacks did not disappoint! Highly recommend. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. At the risk of taking the easy way out, there are so many in my personal and professional life that I can’t name just one, but I am thankful for the role each of them has played in my life. I’ve learned so much from so many people and I can only hope that I continue to be lucky enough to meet some of the best and have their influence to guide me. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? I love summer camping/glamping and hiking in Alaska! FAVORITE QUOTE: “I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.” — William Ernest Henley
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Chicken slinger at KFC. I learned some of the most important lessons about customer service there! WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? There are several, and my recommendation depends on who I’m talking to and what they’re looking for: Bossypants, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, The Power of Habit, and Killing Lincoln/Kennedy/Reagan. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? I have really enjoyed leading DOWL’s United Way campaign. Over the past couple of years, I have worked to spread the campaign companywide to our Lower 48 offices. My favorite way to get people involved: Pledge just one dollar per paycheck and you could win the chance to have the boss sweep the snow/scrape the ice off your car. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? I have always felt like a member of the team at DOWL but becoming an owner in the firm and having that much more responsibility for the projects that so positively impact the lives of people in our state has really hit home for me the idea that I am part of something special. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? It doesn’t have to be a balance, it just needs to work! Prioritize, make sure you feel good about the way things are going, and adjust as needed as circumstances change. That’s life (and work)!
I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.

WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? Anything by Brene Brown WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? As a female endurance athlete I went eight years without having a period. Not only does this predispose me to injury but it also forced me to seek out infertility treatments in order to start a family. During this troubling time I decided to channel my energy in a positive way. Along with my friend Rikki Keen, a sport dietician, we presented to every Anchorage high school cross country running team about the female athlete triad or the relationship between energy deficiency, menstrual irregularities, and osteoporosis. It was incredibly rewarding to share my personal experience and inform girls of the warning signs. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Creating a safe place to have intimate discussions with my clients. That can be helping them realize dreams they are scared to vocalize and tackle or sometimes, quit jobs, sports or past times that are holding them back. I love seeing people making meaningful changes in their lives and if I can play a small role in that it makes me incredibly happy. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I subscribe to the fact that there are different phases in life. I like to say, you can “have it all but not all at once.” While I am a total “yes” person, as a new mom and business owner, it’s been important to create boundaries. Sometimes “saying no to others is saying yes to yourself” and that is crucial for sustainability. Taking time for self-care is essential. MICHAEL DINNEEN PHOTOGRAPHY

EDUCATION Bachelor of Science, Economics, The Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania; Master of Science, Oxford University COMMUNITY WORK UPenn Alumni Interviewer for Alaska; Anchorage South Rotary; Leadership Anchorage Cohort 19; political event planning and commentary FAMILY Ann and Fred Brown, parents; Spike Brown, brother HOMETOWN Fairbanks CURRENT CITY Anchorage WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN ALASKA AND WHY? My favorite place in Alaska is the drive between Anchorage and Girdwood. Where else in the world can you view mountains and ocean, while also watching beluga whales and a bore tide? WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? I spent 10 days in McCarthy over the Fourth of July holiday in 2016. I’ve lived in Alaska off and on for my entire life, and to date this is the most hardcore Alaska experience I’ve ever had. Ten days with no internet, no cell phone, no email, no social media, no plumbing, no showers… I loved every minute. It was the muddiest and most relaxed I have ever been in my adult life. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. Outside of my family, I admire Hedy Lamarr. She was the epitome of beauty, femininity, and Hollywood glamor, all while quietly inventing and patenting the spread spectrum technology used today in such wireless communications as cell phones, GPS, and Wi-Fi. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? Travel, creative writing, and investigating life’s absurdities. I also enjoy watching movies and plays at Bear Tooth. FAVORITE QUOTE: “Don’t worry about the world coming to an end today. It is already tomorrow in Australia.” – Charles M. Schultz WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first job was as an intern in U.S. Sen. Ted Steven’s office in Fairbanks. I was given full domain over cleaning out junk from the file cabinets. I purged ruthlessly. My proudest moment was the day my boss’ boss from the D.C. office commented on how suddenly everything was organized.
WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? My favorite book is Wuthering Heights. The narrative structure is complex (an unreliable narrator within an unreliable narrator), two generations worth of wildly dysfunctional families, a ghost, and a main character’s grave is dug up and the casket opened … Not quite the chick book it’s cracked up to be. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? While working for my last company, Parker Smith and Feek, I was the head of the charitable contributions committee. In that capacity, I organized fundraisers for various Anchorage non-profits. I entertained my fellow employees with satirical emails, planned Amazing Race style scavenger hunts around Anchorage, and arranged social gatherings within the office, all in exchange for money. I learned that if you make charitable giving fun, and don’t take yourself too seriously as a leader, people will want to participate and follow your direction. Donations to the committee increased 400 percent! My pitch is to get involved in causes and fundraisers that you genuinely enjoy. Enthusiasm is infectious, and people will respond to your sense of fun. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? I am very proud of the work BridgeHealth is doing to bring competition to the Alaska healthcare market. Recently, there have been significant shifts in attitudes towards healthcare prices, and I attribute this, in large part, to my company’s presence here in the state. Consequently, employers, consumers, and policy makers are attempting to address the unsustainable cost of healthcare with more determination than ever before. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Budget your time like you would any other precious commodity. For example, in a 24-hour day, you spend eight hours sleeping, between eight and 10 hours working, and have the remaining hours left to invest in yourself, your family, your friends, and your community. Guard each chunk of time jealously, as it all adds up to one life.

I’m still figuring that out; how do you choose from among so many incredible options? It’s hard to pick a favorite place because almost everywhere I’ve visited in this state has been amazing. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? There are simply too many to choose from. One example: Last summer, my girlfriend and I rented a plane and flew to some destinations in the Prince William Sound. It was a rare, blue bird day. We saw some beautiful sights, met new people, enjoyed the wildlife and the flight was a rewarding challenge for me as a pilot. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. My father, without question. Although we didn’t always see eye-to-eye growing up, his values, work ethic, generosity, and reasoned approach to things have been a consistent source of guidance and a role model throughout my adult life. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? General aviation. The reason I moved to Alaska was to fulfill my lifelong dream of flying and working in Alaska. I obtained my private pilot’s license in 2006. When I moved to Alaska in 2016, I received my float plane rating and now fly as much as I can.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Painting classrooms and doing basic maintenance work at my high school as a summer job. WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? When I was in private practice, I used to enjoy pro bono legal representation for clients of limited means. My first firm out of law school, Cozen O’Connor, was supportive of this practice. All of my clients were important to me, but there is no responsibility quite like the kind that comes with being a client’s only option to attain a legal result that will have a monumental impact on their life. In 2010, the City of Philadelphia recognized my pro bono work by placing me on their “Pro Bono Honor Roll.” IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Having a role in the policy and direction of our state as it relates to responsible resource development and land use. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Do the best job you can, give it 100 percent, and treat each day like an opportunity to prove yourself. Treat everyone in your personal and professional life with equal respect and never make assumptions about anyone. Also, don’t forget to take care of yourself in the process.

One of my most memorable experiences in Alaska is standing with my husband in 30 below weather in the middle of a Fairbank’s winter watching the northern lights shimmer across the sky. The Power of One WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? My most rewarding community service has been my international medical work in Nepal, Honduras, and Kenya. My best recommendation is to combine your passions in life with opportunities to give back because it always makes the experience more personal and rewarding. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? In my professional life, I have found my greatest achievement thus far to be my ability to find balance in my life. I am proud that I have found a way to be both a successful Family Medicine Physician as well as a loving and loved mother and wife. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? The best advice I can give to maintaining a good work-life balance is to determine your priorities in life whether work, family, hobbies etc and always keep them in mind when making life decisions. With time and patience and remembering your priorities, you can create/find the work-life balance you desire.

EDUCATION Associate’s degree, Culinary Arts and Hospitality, University of Alaska Fairbanks COMMUNITY WORK The program I manage primarily serves unemployed and under-employed adults who are re-entering the workforce after experiencing a barrier to employment. We also work with under served youth in collaboration with several fantastic local agencies. Last year I cooked “Christmas” dinner with Fairbanks Youth Facility residents for them to enjoy a meal and celebration with their families. I look forward to continuing to volunteer for this every year. I volunteer periodically with the UAF Culinary School for fundraisers and community events, such as the annual Scholarship Dinner and Festival Fairbanks’ Potato Festival. FAMILY David Flaherty, husband, co-owner of Forethought Carpentry, a Fairbanks contractor specializing in custom remodels and high-end wood work; Keilan (3), son; three dogs HOMETOWN Anchorage CURRENT CITY Fairbanks WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN ALASKA AND WHY? Chicken! I got stuck there during wildfires in 2004 and fell in love with the 40 Mile Valley, where Chicken is. You know that feeling you get when you come home after a long trip? Like when you step off the plane and just get a whiff of the air and it’s just... home? When you come around the corner at Mile 64 Taylor Highway and look out over the valley you can see the Chicken “Airport” and a couple of cabins at the edge of town. I can’t explain exactly why, but coming around that corner just feels like home. It has since long before I actually lived there in the summer of 2011. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? In 2012 I floated the Yukon River from Dawson City, Yukon, to Eagle, Alaska, with three other women. The four of us spent four days on the river and didn’t see another human until just before we landed in Eagle; it was just us, two canoes, and the river. It was incredible. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? My 3-year-old has recently become interested in cooking and I cooking with him has quickly become my favorite “after school activity.” I love stepping back and watching how he interprets food preparation and I’m really looking forward to him being old enough for us to get into some more complex techniques.
FAVORITE QUOTE: “Make a better world through learning good things, rather than being angry at bad guys.” — Paul Wheaton WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first restaurant job (though it was my second actual job) was hosting at Elevation 92 in Anchorage when I was 16. I can still remember sitting in 10th grade science class talking about summer jobs and my lab partner Max, who was a busser at another restaurant, telling me I should try to get a job as a hostess because I’d really like it. He was right, I really liked it. That part-time summer job probably changed the entire course of my life. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? I’m so fortunate to have a job I love in which I have the opportunity daily to engage with my community. I get to come to work every day and see the immediate, tangible impact of our work. When I’m getting folks involved, I don’t have a pitch but rather I just share information and ask directly for what I specifically need. I’m passionate about my work and my community and I ask people to get involved when it’s something they believe in or will enjoy doing. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Community Collaboration is key in the non-profit world, where we do big work with limited resources. The collaboration I’m most proud of is the work Stone’s Throw does with Fairbanks Youth Facility. We’ve been so proud to bring culinary education and transferable job skills to some of Alaska’s most vulnerable youth, and are looking forward to continuing to expand our relationship to benefit students on an even more meaningful level. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Set boundaries between work and personal, then hold them sacred. You’re no good to anyone if you aren’t taking care of yourself. Identify and ask for what you need, and encourage the people around you to do the same.

In general it seems to get better and better the farther one gets from the nearest road! WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? Extended solo wilderness trips are always memorable. My most recent 10-day solo mountain goat hunt definitely stands out because of exceptional weather and abundant wildlife. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. Paul Farmer, MD. I’ve always admired people who find their passion in work that benefits other people and I don’t think any modern individual exemplifies this better than Paul Farmer. His organization, Partners in Health, has provided quality health care to some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? I obviously love to alpine ski and am particularly passionate about wilderness and backcountry ski adventures. It has been a big part of my life and has taken me all over the world and remains an obsession. I’ve also been whitewater kayaking avidly for over 20 years and have paddled rivers on five continents. I still try to make it out on the river most days during the summer. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? I’ve enjoyed doing volunteer medicine with sustainable organizations in India, Africa, Micronesia and Alaska and have loved being part of the the Denali Ski Patrol on multiple levels. I’m hoping to get involved in a project in the near future that addresses the impacts of climate change on the health of both people and wildlife in Alaska. I don’t have a “pitch” but it’s fun to be involved in things that I care about with people who share the interest. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Being a family doctor in rural Alaska has allowed me engage with people and help them through everything from primary care visits in the clinic to medical emergencies in the ER and from delivering babies to hospice work with elders. It’s very satisfying and provides a unique window into the human experience. Guiding people skiing and hearing them regularly say, “this is the best day of my life!” is also really special. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? No matter how much I love my job(s), it’s still a job and I think it’s super important to make a lot of time for other passions and activities. To me “balance” requires a 50/50 split and that means I want at least half of the total days of any year completely free for family time and personal pursuits and projects. Having that time is worth every penny of lost income potential. MICHAEL DINNEEN PHOTOGRAPHY

WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? I often recommend “The Strengths Finder” book and assessment. It’s a wonderful way to identify your personal strengths, including tactics to have mutually beneficial interactions with others at work and home. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? Serving in the U.S. Peace Corps in Nicaragua as a Community Health Volunteer for two years was my most rewarding service experience. I currently lead organization of the Anchorage Returned Peace Corps Volunteer group, and we help with recruitment at colleges and community events across the state. My pitch is what’s always been true with Peace Corps: you will gain more than you can ever hope to give in the experience. And it will change your life. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Working at the State of Alaska Division of Economic Development, I had the opportunity to support the state’s entrepreneurs and startups. Especially as our state has struggled through a recession during the past couple years, it was inspiring to be a part of projects and initiatives that made real positive impacts for Alaskans. Working on projects to educate entrepreneurs about capital options, bringing principles of design thinking into the startup community, co-chairing the largest Alaska Startup Week to date, and working to bridge rural-urban barriers to small business growth are some of the most satisfying professional experiences I’ve had. They took me out of my familiar realm of policy and into the real world of entrepreneurship, where I helped founders take some of the biggest risks of their lives in a more supported, strategic way. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? When considering a job, make sure you ask questions up front about allowances for a flexible schedule, what expectations are for being available on phone and email when you’re “off the clock,” and what the culture of the office is. Know what you need to be happy and healthy long-term and don’t be afraid to ask for it. And find opportunities for physical exercise that are as nourishing as they are demanding. From meeting a kiddo at MDA Camp who gets only one week a year to feel like a little kid to Clare to Clare which twofold gave money to an exceptionally worthy organization and in the same breath gave average Sallys the opportunity to be stars and find their inner beauty. I honestly don’t think I could pick just one. I give back and do all of this because I may not have a $1 but I have time. I have time to teach my talent, to make phone calls of support, to even just hold the hand of a sick person just needing comfort. Even in our worst moments if we all slowed down we would see we all have just a little extra time to spare. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? The grand reopening of Sullivan’s Steakhouse. I was the lead in making our new restaurant shine. I was so proud when the mayor shook my hand and cut the ribbon. Not only was it that we had pulled off the impossible by finishing the construction that would never end, we kept 90 percent of our staff and in the end our community saw us as the place they wanted to be again. That was inspiring. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? It was the first TERRA network sale for GCI outside of health and education and later grew to be one of the most popular live cameras in Alaska. In 2015, we added bandwidth in Round Island for walrus cameras. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I work with and lead an excellent team of professionals that have a shared vision. Their efforts are invested with the spirit of meeting our customer’s expectations so that we may all share successes and enjoyment of life. When I am with my family, I shift focus but remain diligent on making a positive impact. We laugh and enjoy life, and while there is sometimes a need to “bring work home” my hope is that I am instilling the value of a positive work ethic and the importance of ethical work for them to someday follow. I share this philosophy with my husband who is also a business professional. MICHAEL DINNEEN PHOTOGRAPHY

STEPHEN JAY GRANTIER • 35 CHUGACH HERITAGE FOUNDATION PROGRAM AND SYSTEMS MANAGER CHUGACH ALASKA CORPORATION
EDUCATION University of Alaska Anchorage; Certificate of Non Profit Management (The Foraker Group) COMMUNITY WORK Teaching dance and performing at various community events and for local organizations throughout Alaska via the Underground Dance Company. Volunteering through several domestic and farm animal rescues shelters (both in and out of Alaska) FAMILY Jessica Anne Grantier, wife; Maui, Fiji, Molokai, cats HOMETOWN/CURRENT CITY Born in Anchorage and spent first seven years growing up in Homer. Have lived in Anchorage since WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN ALASKA AND WHY? At the top of any of Alaska’s incredible vantage points. Watching the sunrise and the clouds roll over Anchorage atop of O’Malley Peak comes to mind. It’s a great place to find calmness and perspective. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? As a lifelong Alaskan it’s hard to pick one, but watching a pod of killer whales teach their young how to hunt a few feet off shore on Nuchek Island definitely stands out. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. My grandmother. Throughout her life, no matter what barriers she has faced, she makes it a priority to stay true to herself. She is the backbone of our family. Whether she was reviewing homework growing up, helping my brother and I make going to college a reality, or making sure our family had a place to call home, she is always there with her love and support. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? Dancing. Particularly in the style of hip-hop and urban choreography. Dancing is the physical expression of creativity and freedom. To be able to share styles and culture through dance is a great way to open yourself to other communities and people from all backgrounds. Showing how hip-hop dance is part of a culture that focuses on peace, diversity, and inclusivity and not what is typically shown in the media. Dancing has also allowed me the opportunity to work with youth in our community. It is great to watch them explore what they are passionate about and see them excel. Everyone I’ve worked with has inspired me to be the best version of myself so I can help them reach their potential. I also love training with my wife to run various Spartan OCR races around the country. FAVORITE QUOTE: “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind 26
word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” — Felice Leonardo “Leo” Buscaglia WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first job was working over the summer before my senior year in high school at Raven Electric. Shophand work, sorting screws/parts, cleaning trucks, etc. WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? Finding Ultra by Rich Roll WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? Anytime you get to step into a situation to help with a cause that benefits those around or the community you live in, only positive things can come from it. Everything I’ve been a part of has been rewarding, but there was one event I remember, that really opened my eyes to the incredible power of giving back. During third year with the Underground Dance Company, we received a request from the Make-A-Wish Foundation to participate and perform for Leland, who was battling Leukemia, and part of his wish to was to have a party so he could help serve food to other kids in need. It was an honor to participate and support him. Only 5 years old, and with everything he had gone through, he understood what it meant to give to others. He always comes to mind anytime an opportunity arises for me to help, no matter how big or small. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Helping the Chugach Heritage Foundation grow their scholarship programs. Watching the programs evolve to allow increased resources for the Chugach shareholders and descendants to utilize so they can reach their educational goals has been an honor. I thoroughly enjoy working with students with such a diverse range of interests. When they finally reach their goal and end up working within their passion, it’s fulfilling to know I played a small role in that. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Work is just a part of life. For me, as long as you stay present in the current moment, minimize stress over things you can’t control, devote time for yourself and those around you, and find something to be grateful for each day, life will find its balance. FAMILY Joe Guyselman, husband of 10 years; one dog and one cat. HOMETOWN Born in Bremerton Wash., grew up in Central and Eastern Washington CURRENT CITY Ketchikan WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN ALASKA AND WHY? Anywhere in the forest or mountaintop. I love the peace and quiet and the ability to observe the wildlife. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? Moving here! I moved here from Guam, six months ahead of my husband. I came with two large international suitcases and that’s it. I didn’t know a soul, but I had a job and confidence. The gracious people of Ketchikan welcomed me. The property manager of my first apartment took me to see it on my second day. I found a car sold by a sweet man who refurbished Subarus, he was late to my test drive because he was taking his wife to dinner. I naively told this man, a stranger, my story; he was my dad’s age. He was so kind. The car was old and broke down twice. Twice this man met me at my work, took the keys, fixed the car and returned it to me. When my husband arrived 6 months later, folks saw me on the ferry and said “Your husband is here?!” NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. There are too many to list. I work hard to find characteristics that I respect in people that I come across. It could be something small, how someone always greets those around her, or how he finds confidence though he is nervous. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? Hiking and walking outside. I also enjoy crafting with friends.
FAVORITE QUOTE: “Be afraid, but do it anyway.” WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Making pies at Cyrus O’Leary Pie Factory! WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? One for the Money by Janet Evanovich WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? Taking family photos for a woman who was at a women’s shelter. I offered the shelter to send me families who would like photos, only one person signed up; it was an excellent experience to see the family so happy. I am simple, I like to tell people how nice it is to make someone else happy, warm, or safe. “What’s it gonna cost ya anyway, an hour less of couch time?” IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Completing Western CUNA Management School while working my way up at Tongass Federal Credit Union. My career is also one of my hobbies, so I tend to give it a lot of attention. Completing WCMS at the same time was tough but I met great people who I will forever be in contact with and learned just what I am capable of. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Scheduling! As I mentioned above my career is also one of my hobbies. I have recently decided to step back from my volunteer efforts so that I can spend more time with my husband and doing things that I like that are just for me. I think it is incredibly important to take self-reflection time to ensure that you are doing what matters most to you. When I am very busy, I make sure to schedule time for myself, that might be time at the gym, going to dinner with friends, or watching a movie on the couch with my husband. Life gets moving quickly and though those things so simple they quickly get away from you.

My favorite place in Alaska is my home. For me, it’s the warmest environment on earth that grants me the tranquility and respite I need to take on another day. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? My most memorable Alaska experience is my very first summer here as a new immigrant. When I pitch for others to get involved with a cause, I encourage them to choose a cause they truly care about so that giving of their time happens naturally and joyfully. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? In my cancer philanthropy career, the most fulfilling moments have been years walking alongside patients. Meeting while they’re in the throes of grueling treatment, connecting them to the programs and services needed to overcome obstacles, watching them get better, then watching them give back to fighting the disease that robbed them of so much. Many of the people I meet have stories that end in sadness, but the ones who make it through their journey victoriously and the memory of those who fought a valiant fight are what keep me motivated to press on every day. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I would advise anyone attempting to achieve work-life balance to become skilled at leaving margin in their life. Particularly for those of us who want to help with everything, it’s important that we train ourselves to make a split-second decision on each opportunity that comes our way, and truly evaluate if it outweighs the time we need for rest and enjoyment of the people and activities we love.

Sitting around the campfire with my family in Hope. Hope is our favorite summer destination because of the beautiful scenery, great music every weekend, and the wonderful community. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? Finishing the Fireweed 200 bike relay in a downpour of rain that followed us for nearly all 200 miles of the race. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. When I think of Tessa Walker Linderman, I think of the Ben Harper song: “I can change the world, with my own two hands.” My sister has traveled to Nepal, Indonesia, and Turkmenistan among others, to provide medical care and community support. She advocates through action, has good instincts and honest intentions. Tessa makes careful and sometimes difficult decisions, always placing her family above herself. In ways big and small, Tessa amplifies the marginalized and takes care of the world around her – especially her children. She never seeks credit and is not motivated by acknowledgement. My sister is a good human, and I’m lucky to be related to her. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? Downhill skiing with my family, or camping in the summer. FAVORITE QUOTE: My dad’s family lost their home, business, and their entire community in the 1964 earthquake. The Walker family persevered through tragedies and difficult circumstances, yet their mantra remained: “Ever forward, never backward.”
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Soccer referee with the Boys and Girls Club when I was 14. WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? Shoe Dog by Phil Knight WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? Helping 30 women and their children get released from a detention facility in Texas upon receiving positive asylum interviews. Actions really do speak louder than words. People who know me or learned about my experience realized that this type of service was achievable and desperately needed. It wasn’t easy but hopefully other attorneys realize that if I can make it happen, they can too. In response, we are currently working to bring a group of Alaska attorneys to the same Texas facility later this year. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? I have enjoyed adding service projects to ENSTAR’s community engagement portfolio. Whether we’re driving the natural gas grill down to Bean’s Café for a cookout, collecting books and throwing pizza parties for area schools, or preparing lunches for elementary students, quarterly service projects have had a meaningful impact on our company and our community. Not only are we brightening someone’s day, as employees we enjoy the comradery, team building, and the opportunity to engage our community. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I think there’s a lot of pressure on professionals, especially women, to maintain a work-life balance. “Work” and “life” are both priorities but neither are equally balanced all of the time. Some weeks I work more than I should and some weeks I’ll spend more time with my family than planned. And that is OK. Having a supportive spouse, children, and co-workers is absolutely key to pulling off the juggling act.

I don’t know if I have a specific place, but wherever I can be outside or in the wilderness with friends or family is the best. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? Fly fishing on the Illiamna River surrounded by grizzly bears NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. I respect my parents more than I can ever express. They always do what is best for our family and put honesty first in all situations. They taught me that it might hurt to reveal the truth, but over time, it will be better for everyone involved. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? Soccer, biking and woodworking. FAVORITE QUOTE: “Wake up every day with the goal of being 1 percent better than you were yesterday.” — Not sure who originally said this but I’ve heard it from a few sources. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I worked at Bells Nursery at age 16, helping people load plants they purchased. That same summer I started working in the K-Mart bakery.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? The most rewarding experiences I’ve had were serving meals at Bean’s Café. I saw firsthand how much a simple meal means to people that have nothing, and it really makes me appreciate everything wonderful about my life. When asked about getting involved I explain just how big of an impact Bean’s Café and The Children’s Lunchbox has on the community. Serving 600,000 meals to all ages has a drastic impact on so many people in Anchorage; there is no better cause. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? The most fulfilling aspect about my career is seeing the impact our projects have on the building’s users, and how excited they are about the new facilities. Being able to drive around Anchorage and other parts of the state, and to be able to point out buildings I helped build, and see the impact Cornerstone has had on our community. I also really enjoy helping people grow and develop more skills to improve their own lives. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I make a deliberate choice to exercise, eat well, take lunch and leave work for a midday break, and spend time with friends and family. I make my physical, emotional and my mental health my top priority. Map out your goals, think about the time required to achieve them, and make a conscious choice to allocate your time to decide your work-life balance. If you asked most people close to me, they would say that my life skews heavily towards work and service, and they are right. That is a choice I consciously make.

The trails near our house. It’s why I love Alaska: from my house (in the city proper) to the wildness is only 0.78 miles. I didn’t realize it, but the temperature dropped to -30°F that night! I was warm and comfy since the dogs had climbed into my sleeping bag with me (it truly was a three dog night), but everyone else was miserable. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? My most rewarding community service is volunteering in my son’s classroom. I’m lucky enough to have a company that supports my regular volunteering, which has allowed me to volunteer every other week since he was a kindergartner (he’s in third grade now). I cherish getting to know the kids, being connected to his teachers, and watching the growth of all the kids in his classroom. What I tell others who are interested in getting involved is that your job is just one part of who you are. We all have different jobs but we live in our community together. It takes everyone being involved to make a community prosper and thrive. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Prioritize. I have been blessed with an incredible family and with many successful woman who consistently support and challenge me. I think that there are many times in life when we truly don’t slow down to give ourselves credit for the journey we have had and our accomplishments along the way. There was a distinct moment during the speech that it “hit me” – I must be doing something right. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I think that if you do not purposely and steadfastly prioritize time to selfishly take care of YOU (mind, body and health) you won’t be able to show up being your best you for those you care most about. I think we all need to remind ourselves to slow down and smell the roses, take the trips we keep putting off and spend more time doing things that make us happy.

In the winter it would be Cuddy Family Midtown Oval where I frequently take my kids to skate and have fun. In the summer it is Petersville that offers some great scenery and four-wheeling terrain. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? Many years ago we drove to the Arctic Circle where we camped overnight. While experiencing 24-hour daylight for the first time was unique it was not as memorable as waking up in a tent and having all the mesh vents completely covered with mosquitoes. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. The person I respect the most in this world would have to be my mom. She has a way of putting everyone else’s needs above hers. Despite living almost 5,000 miles away she has always been there for me. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? Getting on the ice has been fun over the years. Outdoor skating with my family on local ponds, lakes, or our backyard rink, is on the top of my list. FAVORITE QUOTE: “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” — Wayne Gretzky
WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? Lately, I have been reading a lot of children’s books. I have to say that Good Night Peppa Pig has been a big hit at our house. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? My general answer would include anything that involves helping youth whether it is through coaching or serving on First National’s Donations Committee. One memorable experience I have was participating in the Alaska Aces Skate into Reading Program. Now having young kids of my own, I get to see things from a different perspective. I have a better understanding of what it means to them. Watching kids learn, react to, and experience things that might not otherwise be possible without community involvement, is very rewarding. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Finishing the CFA Program and getting my charter is definitely one of the most fulfilling things for me. It was a long journey but very satisfying in the end. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I understand that everyone has a different idea of what a good work-life balance should look like. My advice would be, and I learned it from playing hockey, never bring work home. I don’t mean just work itself but also the mindset and moods associated with it. I think that being able to separate work and life is very important. This way one can focus on and get the most out of each one.
You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? During my high school years I, along with many of my classmates, worked part-time for a local newspaper assembling advertisements. It was repetitive and not very exciting, but we tried to make the most out of it by having a friendly competition of who could do more shipments in one shift. MICHAEL DINNEEN PHOTOGRAPHY

FAMILY Nathanael O’Connor, husband HOMETOWN/CURRENT CITY I still haven’t grown up! I am currently “growing up” in Anchorage. I was born and raised in Southeast Alaska in Kake and Juneau. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN ALASKA AND WHY? My favorite place in Alaska is wherever I am gathered with people who are also invested in Alaska and love it and also understand its quirks and nuances, and also don’t take it too seriously. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? Getting off the plane in Southeast on a rainy summer day, laying in a hammock in my parent’s backyard, walks to the glacier with my sister, and experiencing different rural communities in Alaska with my husband and partner, Nathanael O’Connor. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. I respect my parents the most because they are the main reason I have made it as far as I have. I learned hard work, respect, laughter, and seriousness and perseverance from them. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? I love, love, love to read! PARIS PHOTOGRAPHICS
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN ALASKA AND WHY? I love Fairbanks because of the size and the community. However, I miss being near the ocean. Another reason I love Fairbanks is because of my family history here. My mom’s side of the family has been here since 1914, when my great-grandparents moved here. Fairbanks is truly home. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? Spending a couple of weeks with my dad who lives on St. George Island and commercial halibut fishing with him. Going from my comfortable office at the bank to a fishing boat in the Bering Sea was a drastic change. I realized after a couple of trips, being a banker was a much better fit than being a commercial fisherman. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. Of all the people that I have had the opportunity to meet and who have impacted my life, I would say that my Godfather the Very Reverend Nicholas Molodyko-Harris is a person I respect the most. His love for everyone and generosity to everyone encourage me to be a better person.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? When I am not happily working at the bank, my favorite hobby is to referee basketball. There are a couple of things about refereeing basketball that make it so enjoyable. First, the referee always has the best seat in the gym. Second, even if it is negative 4 degrees outside, it is always sunny and 70 in the gym. Plus, the adrenalin rush you get when a gym full of excited fans boo you is unreal! FAVORITE QUOTE: “You only have time for what you make time for.” — Not sure who said it first, but I heard if from my brother Aaron a long time ago. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I believe it was as a busboy at a hotel restaurant in Fairbanks. WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? The Rules of Basketball. Everyone that plans on going to watch a game and have an opinion on the referees should have to read it. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? Not any single event, but being a member of the Downtown Rotary Club of Fairbanks has been a wonderful experience. Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self,” is a great reminder of how we should approach life. If I had to narrow it down to something specific, I would say organizing blood drives for the Blood Bank of Alaska. Having two immediate family members need blood in an emergency situation has made me a true believer in being a blood donor and advocate. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Any time that I am able to approve loan requests or help people work towards their dreams is a very fulfilling experience. A career moment that I am still very grateful for is when I was promoted to Senior Vice President here at Mt. McKinley Bank. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? An appropriate balance is an absolute must between work and home. You cannot be your best at either if you don’t have proper balance. When I was growing up, all major decisions were made as a family at the kitchen table. The work/life balance must also be a decision by the whole family at the table. 39

On a river, with a fly rod. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? By far my most memorable Alaskan experience was the first time that I caught and surfed the bore tide. There is nothing like cruising up Turnagain Arm on a seemingly neverending wave taking in the views of the Chugach Mountains. It is the only time I have ever been surfing where you have the time to pause and take in the beauty of your surroundings balanced with the power of the wave. Truly a surreal experience. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. My family: My children for replenishing a sense of wonder and encouragement to play. My parents for giving me so many opportunities and enabling me to explore the world. My sister for reminding me who I really am and where I came from… and my wonderful loving wife, who hopped on board this crazy train with me. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? I recently took up basketball, a sport that I have been historically terrible at to a nearly comical level. With both of my children playing in multiple leagues I have embraced basketball with a fresh perspective. I am proud to say that after nearly three years of open gym sessions, I now officially own a pair of basketball shoes and can engage in a conversation about the benefits of transitioning to a full court press defense with my kids.

The Art of War by Sun Tzu WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? I continue to be thankful for the opportunity to serve on the board of Visit Anchorage. I am proud to be able to share ideas and experiences with people who are equally passionate about all that our beautiful state has to offer. There is nothing more satisfying than spending time finding new ways to encourage people to discover and enjoy the beauty of the place where I live. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? After working at the Hilton Anchorage for over a decade it has been incredibly satisfying seeing the transformation that the hotel has gone through during our yearlong renovation. While daunting in scope, it was extremely rewarding to watch our team come together over the past year to manage the many challenges associated with a total hotel renovation running through our busy summer season. The final product is amazing and something we are excited to share with the many visitors who come through our great state. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Balance isn’t about keeping an even course. There are times that one needs to grind and just put the hours in. However equally important is to prioritize time for self and family to unplug, leave your cell phone at home… or better yet, find somewhere without cell phone service.

EDUCATION I learned how to work on a small dairy farm in South Dakota; Bachelor of Science, Economics, minor in Accounting, South Dakota State University COMMUNITY WORK Boys & Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula, Board Vice President and Past President; Junior Achievement volunteer; Soldotna Food Bank volunteer; wish granter for Make-A-Wish of Alaska; Kenai Peninsula Economic Development District, Board Treasurer; LeeShore Center volunteer, Co-Chair of the Wells Fargo Alaska Volunteer Chapter; fundraising for the Kenai Central High School soccer team and most importantly, raising two kids to be caring and productive citizens! FAMILY Mandy, wife; Damien, son; Madisen, daughter; Kanga (dog) and three rabbits: Skittles, Bun Bun Bigglesworth and Sir Fluffy Norbert HOMETOWN I grew up six miles outside of Flandreau, South Dakota. CURRENT CITY I live closer to Soldotna, but work in Kenai. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN ALASKA AND WHY? My favorite place in Alaska is Clam Gulch. Out of all of the places my family and I have gone camping, we have spent the most time together at Clam Gulch. I have many fond memories of building sand castles, having fires on the beach, climbing the bluffs, playing beach soccer, collecting shells, painting rocks, telling ghost stories around the fire…basically a lot of good activities away from the screen of a phone or a computer. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? My most memorable experience in Alaska was when my daughter, Madisen, was born at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna. My wife and son knew the gender, but I didn’t want to know. They successfully kept it a secret. I’ll always remember how happy I was when our family gained a healthy, spunky girl.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? When I’m not spending time with my family, my most favorite thing to do is to chop wood. Chopping wood allows me the solitude needed to reflect upon where I’ve been, what I’ve done and where I want to go in all aspects of my life. It’s 42
FAVORITE QUOTE: “Success is not final. Failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.” — Winston Churchill WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Mowing the lawn and doing landscaping for a neighbor. WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek. It’s a good read on the importance of understanding our core motivations and how we may use that understanding to inspire others around us. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? I’d have to say granting a wish to a family for Make-A-Wish in Alaska. My sister was the first Make-A-Wish recipient in South Dakota in the 1980s, so it was very meaningful for me to help give back in this specific way. I understood how much it meant to the family in Alaska to be able to take a break from what they were dealing with. My pitch: giving back to your community is like camping in Alaska. If you care about the campsite, you’re going to leave it better than you found it. If you care about your community, then work to make it better than you found it. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? I find fulfillment in adding value and making positive changes. I also celebrate small successes since I believe no significant change came without small improvements. As such, it’s fulfilling for me anytime I can help a colleague grow in their understanding specific to their profession. The cool thing with celebrating small improvements in those around me is I can find a lot of fulfillment in a week if I’m willing to foster growth in others. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I’d suggest to not think of a work-life balance since that implies you have to sacrifice one for the other. Try to just look at it as life and try to get the most fulfillment out of it. Taking this approach increases the likelihood of your being present in what you’re engaged in at any given time. It’s also good to use your common sense and listen to those who care about you if they voice concerns on how you’re prioritizing your time.

I am an active member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Anchorage Chapter, a group of combat wounded volunteers advocating for veterans issues. I am an active member in a worldwide 12-step program community, combating addictions and encouraging those who battle addictions toward living a better, sober life. FAMILY Marta, wife; Keilah (12) and Sydney (11) daughters HOMETOWN Duluth, Minn. CURRENT CITY Anchorage WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN ALASKA AND WHY? It so hard to choose one specific place in Alaska. The trail systems near the Campbell Airstrip are amazing. Although the trail begins just across the street from our populated neighborhood, the miles and miles of rugged wooded trails are absent of houses and surrounded by the beauty of natural Alaska. I like to get away and gather my thoughts on a vigorous run. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? I served in combat with a warrior named Shane Woods from Palmer. Shane was killed in Iraq in August 2006. His father cemented a flag and capsule in his memory at the top of Lazy Mountain in Palmer. My most memorable experience was the first time I climbed Lazy Mountain with Shane’s dad and sister. We reflected on Shane and paid tribute to his legacy at the summit. Those moments are the ones that put life into its proper perspective. MICHAEL PENN PHOTOGRAPHY
NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. I respect Fredrick Douglas a lot. As a social reformer, abolitionist and Republican statesmen in 19th century America, he defined the core values and principals I aspire to live up to. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? I like to spend time with my family, play guitar, write music, run, hunt,
fish volunteer and explore the Alaskan bush. FAVORITE QUOTE: “A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.” — General George S. Patton WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Working on a farm, picking rocks from the field. WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? Writing and performing original songs at the memorial services in Iraq for our friends when they were killed was both the hardest and most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. It was rewarding in the sense that I was able to help others grieve in a healthy way, while carrying on the legacies of our dear fallen friends through music. I tell people that life is short. The happiest elderly people I meet are not those who’ve achieved the most, but are those who’ve made the biggest positive difference in the lives of others. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? While I was working for Congressman Young several years ago he learned the Eielson Air Force Base commissary had abruptly discontinued their 20-year tradition of giving expired but edible food to the Fairbanks Community Food Bank. The agency decided to destroy edible government food rather than give it to the poor. The congressman tasked me with assisting him in solving the problem. After a long and difficult process working our way through the daunting bureaucracy of the Obama Administration’s Department of Defense, we finally attained a memo from the Office of the Secretary of Defense authorizing the Fairbanks Community Food Bank to receive the foods. Knowing we didn’t give up in doing the right thing for the poor in rural Alaska was one of my most fulfilling professional experiences. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I believe work-life balance is a myth. We should strive to work doing what we love, or work to love our jobs as part of our lives. Focusing on what is right in front of us, each moment, with undivided attention is critical to success in life and work. Living fully in the moment is the key. 43

I enjoy volunteering with Junior Achievement of Alaska, Camp Fire Alaska, Junior Nordic, and Anchorage School Business Partnership. FAMILY Ian, husband; Tate (9), son; Peja (7), daughter HOMETOWN/CURRENT CITY Anchorage WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN ALASKA AND WHY? Our family cabin near Talkeetna. My parents started building it when I was just a year old and I treasure that it has grown with our family and now my children can have many of the same experiences that I did there. While still rustic, we spend many weekends up there and I always marvel at what a special place it is. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? Holding a talent show in Paradise Cove in Prince William Sound on a hot sunny day. Every summer, we would spend weeks exploring coves and bays in Prince William Sound with other families and I can still remember the smooth flat rocks that provided the perfect place to perform all the songs we made up while traveling.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? Traveling! Both in Alaska and the Lower 48. I love to experience new places and find all the delicious places to eat. Most recently, I fell in love with Sitka and can’t wait to go back. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Alaska Mountaineering & Hiking. I was one of the first high school students they hired and last I checked, my picture was still up on the wall! WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? Do podcasts count? I’m always sharing at least 2 to 3 with friends… Leave it Better Than You Found It by Bruce Nordstrom. Provided to me when I was in the management program at Nordstrom, I’ve lent my own copy to multiple people over the years as the lessons of corporate culture and customer service are valid no matter the industry. I also love the historical tie to Alaska as he talks about his grandfather’s experiences in Skagway. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? Giving back to the Nordic skiing community that gave so much to me when I was younger. I realize now how hard the volunteers worked each race and event all season long and being able to now share my time and skills with the organization is so meaningful to me. My pitch is pretty simple and I’m not sure it’s always effective but “It’s sure to be fun and you’ll likely be outside!” IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? I’ve had to opportunity to be involved in many different grand openings throughout my career in marketing such as the first Victoria’s Secret at the Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall and most recently Northrim Bank’s Eastside Community branch. The planning and anticipation takes months, even years and to experience the end result with those first happy customers when the doors finally open is so rewarding. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? It can be hard to make time for it, but exercise is critical for my work-life balance. It gives me a chance to plan out my day or think through any challenges at work or even catch up with friends when we go for a run or a ski at Kincaid together.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? I love volunteering for Junior Achievement and going into the classrooms to teach the kids about financial literacy and entrepreneurship. When I am encouraging others to get involved, I talk about how excited the kids are to meet someone new and learn about the tools they can use to become whoever they want to be when they grow up. The kids love telling you about who they want to become and it is so rewarding to be able to help them achieve that. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? An achievement that I found to be very fulfilling was when I was awarded the All Star Leadership Award at Wells Fargo. This award meant a lot because I was recognized for my leadership skills and not just for my sales. Receiving this award was a goal I had set for myself when I started with Wells and I was beyond excited when I earned it. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Though it can be difficult, check your work at the door when you get home. If you can’t, allow yourself a time to vent to you partner and then move on. Devote your time to your family. Make it an active decision to put the work issues aside and give your full attention to your loved ones. Also, work for a company that realizes the importance of having this balance and gives you the support and resources to achieve it.

My hometown of Kotzebue is my favorite place in the world. When you combine the pride of a small town with the traditions of the Inupiaq culture, you have something very special. Add to that the bounty of a land where caribou outnumber residents 30 to 1, and you have the Northwest Arctic. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? My most memorable Alaska experience was returning home after living on the east coast for eight years, where I graduated from college and then worked for The Boston Globe and Deloitte & Touche. Growing up in Kotzebue, you can’t appreciate how special Alaska is until you’ve spent significant time away. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. I most respect my husband Jake. He’s been an outstanding member of our community for 20 years, lending his time to coaching, broadcasting games on the radio and refereeing. He has always supported me in my career and has always believed in me, even during the times that I didn’t. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? Spending time with my family is my true love. My mother instilled the value of education and culture in me and I want to pass that on to my children. Being a parent is the most demanding, humbling and ultimately rewarding thing I have ever done. FAVORITE QUOTE: “Lead by Example.” WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? At the age of 17, I was promoted from cashier to night manager at Hanson’s Trading Company, after a month on the job.
WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? I would recommend any book by my father-in-law Lee Stone. I had the privilege of contributing to his Slacker Mills mystery series, Free Fish Friday and Barracuda. The Student Council and Once Upon a Tee Time are enjoyable reads as well. Each is very different from the other, but all share the same great writing-style. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? I feel blessed to work for the Native Village of Kotzebue, where community service is what we do. Preserving the Inupiaq language in our immersion school, providing housing for elders, transportation, environment, reality and probate, enrollment and social services is our work product each day. In my spare time, a highlight is volunteering for the Eskimojis Basketball Club that serves seventy third- to sixth-grade students. Seeing the growth of the youth — on and off the basketball court — is extremely gratifying. There is no better way to serve the Inupiaq values — Respect for Elders, Hunter’s Success, Hard Work, Humor, Respect for Nature, Family Roles, Portrait of a People, Knowledge of Family Tree, Knowledge of Language, Love for Children, Respect for Others, Avoid Conflict, Cooperation, Sharing, Spirituality, Responsibility to the Tribe and Humility – than to offer your time for community service. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Taking the lead on the deepwater port for Kotzebue has been very gratifying. Once completed, it will reduce the cost of shipping and have a major impact on the entire region. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Many people see work as paycheck, or just a way to make ends meet. I believe taking pride in your work will not only benefit your output and those affected by it, but also carry over to the fulfillment of your personal life. MICHAEL DINNEEN PHOTOGRAPHY

With my work for STG, I’ve had the unique opportunity to visit every region in Alaska, as well as countless communities throughout the state. I’ve seen some amazing scenery throughout Alaska. I enjoy the adventure of visiting new locations and finding hidden details in places that I’ve been. My favorite place can be found on a ridgeline or mountain top above the treeline, and looking into the vast wilderness that is our great state of Alaska. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? I have many fond memories of growing up in Nome, such as flying in my grandfather’s Supercub or driving the Nome-Council Highway to spend the summer at camp. Our cabin was in Council, which is about 80 miles southeast of Nome. The road dead-ended at the Niukluk River, which needed to be crossed because our cabin was on the other side. There was a particular time my mother was driving us kids. Before crossing, she would put us in life jackets and remove our seat belts in our 1988 Isuzu Trooper. As we made our way across the river, the car started to float and bob off course. My mother was quick thinking and instructed me to open the passenger’s door as she opened her driver’s door. This allowed water to flow through the floorboards, just below the seats, giving the vehicle more weight to keep the tires on the riverbed. As we made it through the final few yards, I remember my brother and I shouting with excitement because we were watching fish swim through our car! NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. After recently becoming a father, my respect for both my parents has been reinforced. My parents made many sacrifices for us kids and it wasn’t easy at times. But as I look back with a new lens, I’m so grateful.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? At 9 years old, I was enrolled into Junior Nordic. Since then skiing has helped shaped who I am. In high school and college, skiing and biathlon allowed me to travel the world for competitions. Recently, I’ve found a new interest and challenge with general aviation. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Janitor at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? Why Things Break by Mark E. Eberhart WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? I enjoy getting folks together to help keep our roads and community clean. The Adopt-A-Highway has been a great venue to invite coworkers and friends out to get fresh air, stretch the legs, and keep our city looking great. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? Starting in 2011, I have had the opportunity to lead the design-build efforts for STG on GCI’s award-winning TERRA Project. Throughout this program of a project, many technical, geographic and cultural challenges were faced. However with exceptional teamwork, the mutual desire to find solutions, and perseverance, STG helped GCI deliver a multi-phase project that consisted of a broadband telecommunication network the size of Texas throughout Alaska. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind. Stress and pressures can build and weigh on people differently. It’s important to find time outside of work to do what makes you happy. Take advantage of benefits your employer might offer, such as a gym membership, social clubs or paid time off. During the work week, it’s important to find, acknowledge and celebrate “wins” within your respective teams. MICHAEL DINNEEN PHOTOGRAPHY

PRESIDENT/HEAD BREWER • HOODOO BREWING COMPANY EDUCATION Bachelor’s degree, Business Information Systems University of Montana (2002); Diploma in Brewing Technology, World Brewing Academy/ Siebel Institute (2005) FAMILY Jessica Wilken, wife; Wave (8), Everett (5), children; Missoula (16), Black Lab HOMETOWN/CURRENT CITY Born and Raised in Fairbanks WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN ALASKA AND WHY? I love so many parts of our great state, but my hometown of Fairbanks is my favorite place in Alaska. I am constantly reminded just how special of a place it is and how lucky I have been to grow up here and raise my family here. Due to our isolation and dark, cold winters, the people of Fairbanks truly have an Alaskan spirit unlike anywhere else. We love where we live — we are all in this Interior Alaska adventure together. We even embrace those dark, 40 below zero days/weeks as a some sort of annual rite of passage. Then the three months of midnight sun is the icing on the cake! WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? My first moose I harvested many years ago still replays in my head all the time. Ten days of hunting, until finally spotting that bull and taking a shot. The energy and focus at that moment still gives me goose bumps. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. It’s a tie. I respect my parents, Gary and Sue in so many ways. My dad: Incredibly hard working throughout his life (even now in “retirement”), and just about the kindest and caring person in the world. My mom: Best mom ever, and shows us every day how to be a loving parent/grandparent, and how to seize the day, enjoy life, and experience the world. My mom and dad have always been truly inspirational in my life. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY AWAY FROM WORK? Fishing in Prince William Sound with family and friends. FAVORITE QUOTE: “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.” WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB Beginning when I was ten years old, my sister Karen and I split a paper route for the Fairbanks Daily-News Miner. I still have my Ace Carrier 1992 trophy on my
desk! WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU MOST OFTEN RECOMMEND? The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian. For a long time this was about the only resource on how to brew beer at home and is responsible for lighting the beer making fire in my brain. Throughout the book, just when the reader is feeling overwhelmed with brewing information, Charlie will quip: “Relax, don’t worry, have a home brew.” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND WHAT IS YOUR PITCH WHEN YOU ARE SEEKING OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED IN A CAUSE? I see the Taproom at our little brewery as a service to the community, and I’m very proud of what it has become and what it means to Fairbanks. It is a place where friends can meet, new friendships are kindled, and old ones reinvigorated. People come to celebrate, to grieve, to dream, and just to plain old relax with friends and family. The importance of that social interaction in a community such as ours is so important, and uplifting to the community as a whole. IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN A PROJECT OR ACHIEVEMENT YOU HAVE FOUND TO BE THE MOST FULFILLING? While bottling our first batch of home brewed beer (dubbed Cool Extra Pale Ale) in 2000, Jessica and I talked about how “Cool” it would be to open a brewery back home in Fairbanks someday. This pipe dream never went away. Twelve years later, we opened on Halloween 2012 to a packed taproom and haven’t looked back. To call that achievement fulfilling would be an understatement. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? The most important advice I received was to make sure to recognize the value of “time off”. Forcing yourself to take an hour, a day, a week or more for yourself and your family has much more value in the long run than it seems at that moment. We followed this advice and built the brewery around our family lives, not the opposite, which has reaped benefits in our personal relationships and the overall health of our business.

That is a tough question to answer because I love all of Alaska. Right now, I would say northwestern Alaska due to a recent hunting experience in the region. Love the culture and warmth from the people in this part of the state, great community! WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ALASKA EXPERIENCE? So many great memories…the first silver salmon I ever caught with my dad on the Little Susitna when I was about 6 or 7 years old. NAME THE PERSON YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY. Hands down, my wife, Josie. She is the most generous, kind, positive, and upbeat person I have ever met. She has supported me, been my cheerleader and coach for the last 12 years, and I would definitely not have the successes I have had without her support. BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ON MAINTAINING A GOOD WORK-LIFE BALANCE? A good friend of mine recently said that no one has ever laid on their death bed wishing they had worked more.
