3 COVID-19 has defined our lives for the last two years and has kept us hunkered down, hemmed in and hopeful, but missing the camaraderie of our friends in foam at beer events we’ve been so rewarded with over the years. I’m happy that things are at a point where we can once again gather – safely – and celebrate craft beer in our state like it should be. Welcome to the 27th annual edition of this lively event. The Alaska Craft Brew and Barley Wine Festival is the biggest – and often most boisterous – beer festival in our state. That’s because Alaskans love their local beer, and it’s exactly the right time of the year to gather and toast everything that’s great up here, when our annual dark and cold endurance test is only half over. This year’s Alaska Craft Brew and Barley Wine Festival is a studious celebration of the best beers our local brewers have to offer. When I say “local,” I don’t mean just the Southcentral Alaska region in our state. Breweries with us this year come from as far north as Fairbanks, and as far down as our Southeastern Panhandle. If you’re new to the festival, visiting from out of state and wondering what all the hoopla is, it’s this festival that more of our over 50 breweries and their brewers gather under one roof than any other. That’s always a big bragging right for me when talking about this festival to people that don’t know about it. Look around and see for yourself; the most populated areas on the
festival floor are those occupied by our local brewers. This mix is punctuated with excellent beers from the larger region that includes the Pacific Northwest, so don’t miss out on these either as part of your happy exploration of craft beer, which is the goal of this festival. For those stalwart craft beer soldiers that return and attend every year, breathe in and luxuriate in the additional space that the Dena’ina Center features. This is the second year the event’s been held here, having moved from the Egan Center commensurate with a festival restructure, resulting in the renaming and invigoration of the festival year before last. If you see the event organizers from Peak 2 Peak out on the festival floor, thank them for what they’ve done by rescuing this festival from near extinction. As for strategy, before diving headlong into the masses with your arm sampling glass outstretched before you, glance through this program and at least roughly chart your journey with whatever your goal is in mind. Looking for the new stuff? Find it and chase it down first. There are new breweries, meaderies and cideries here this year that are worthy of your attention. Going after the namesake barley wines? Again, focusing on those first will achieve your objective and allow you discover other fermented delights after you get what you came here for out of the way. No Continued on page 39

matter what, my time-tested advice is to visit our local breweries first, regardless of your objective; they’re the most packed all of the time, and density intensifies as the fest rages on. Consider, too, that our smaller breweries often have limited supply of some of their more sought after beer, if you get my drift. If your objective is to just get wasted, best of luck. Oh, you can do it, but it’s hardly a good investment of your time and money at what’s really an immersive educational event designed to expand and sharpen your palate, and at the same to expose you to the best of the best in our regional beer world. Worse, you’ll stand out pretty quick. You’ll get frowned upon by other festgoers, and rapidly become a subject to watch by festival officials that are here to make sure the fest is fun and lively, but at the same time, controlled and dignified. Why do I have to see out of control drunks get ejected every year? That being said, make no mistake that this is a designated driver event. Combine that with the fact that your presence and participation in this gig makes you a beer ambassador – good or bad – and drinking and acting responsibly while you’re under the scrutiny of the local constabulary and community adds a ton of responsibility on your part as you beer-adventure through the evening. Enjoy the food offerings that are integral to the festival. Not only is
this a bonus for attendees (I always get the munchies when partying with friends, and having local options is a big upgrade from years past), food is an important tool to manage alcohol intake. Eat first because the food is local and great, but do so as well to mitigate the buzz that’s inevitable when consuming what amounts of a significant amount of high octane beer through the evening. “Hydrate or Die” is the craft beer aficionado’s creed for warding off the ickies on the day after. Water stations and non-alcoholic beverage choices are plentiful. Search them out. My strategy is to consume water ounce for ounce with the beer I’m drinking. “A sample of beer and a shot of water, a sample of beer and a shot of water, a sample of beer and a shot of water,” has always been my practice. I wouldn’t have survived 26 years of this festival without managing my buzz and knowing my limits. Go slow, accept and adhere to the COVID-19 precautions that are in place for everyone’s safety, be patient and respectful of other, also thirsty revelers, make this a beer learning experience, but most of all, have fun! That’s what this is all about. It’s winter in Alaska, and you’re doing one of the things we’re so well known for in the winter after all: drinking great, local big beers in the dark, in the cold on the Last Frontier. Cheers!
