Summer is upon us and Bear Paw Festival is celebrating 33 years as a major summer attraction for southcentral Alaska! This year, we celebrate the adventures of Amelia Bearhart! Much like Amelia Earhart’s adventurous spirit, the Bear Paw Festival prides itself on representing the adventurous spirit of Alaska and the folks of Chugiak -Eagle River. The events of Bear Paw in Paradise begin Wednesday July 11 with the Annual Bear Paw Awards Luncheon, held at the Eagle River Ale House at 12pm. Join us for lunch and help celebrate the recognition of local individuals who add value to our hometowns. Events on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday include the ever-famous Teddy Bear Picnic, the fun-filled vegetable Lunch Box derby, Chalk the Walk and of course the carnival for kids. A Classic Car Show and Motorcycle Rally provide joy to car and motorcycle enthusiasts. Don’t forget the Grand Parade on Saturday morning followed by the chance to participate in the Slippery Salmon Olympics! Of course we can’t forget the Human Foosball games – get your team together now and create rich new memories of summer in Alaska. Shuttle Around the Festival Reliant Transportation will provide free Bear Paw Shuttle service within downtown Eagle River on Saturday, July 14. Park your car at VFW Post 9785 on the south end of town or at the Eagle River Fred Meyer on the north end of town anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday only with a break for the parade and 5K. Between 10:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., all access into the Festival area will be restricted for the Bear Paw Classic 5-K Run and the Bear Paw Grand Parade. Shuttle service will resume following the parade. Note: If parking at Fred Meyer, please use the far north parking lot and look for the Bear Paw Shuttle Sign.

tHE tEDDY bEAR pICNIC Join us on Friday July 13th at 11a.m. at the Eagle River Commons for a day full of old-fashioned picnic games. Back again by popular demand is our all community Teddy Bear Picnic! It’s a fun-filled way to start the Bear Paw Festival! Younger “cubs” will enjoy story time, as well as games and age appropriate activities.
Chalk the Walk Chalk the Walk with the UAA Chugiak-Eagle River Campus – Join the UAA Chugiak-Eagle River Campus in a sidewalk chalk event on top of the Commons from 11a.m.-2p.m. on Friday, to kick off the Teddy Bear Picnic! Participation in the event is free, and we welcome families of all ages and skill levels to leave their unique footprint on the Bear Paw Festival!

Lunch Box Derby Be the first on your block to race an eggplant! Let your imagination run wild and build a race car made completely out of fruits and vegetables. Cars are made using toothpicks, bamboo skewers and rubber bands. This is the time to bring out all those engineering skills! The cars will race down a 4 x 8 foot ramp. The distance traveled will be from the top of the ramp to the front end of the main car body. The race will take place Friday, at 12 noon at the Teddy Bear Picnic at the Eagle River Commons. Odor Eater Rotten Sneaker Contest Odor Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest What’s blowing in the wind at the Bear Paw Festival? It’s the Great Alaska Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest! This event is open to any child 5 –15 years of age wearing a pair of sneakers. The worse the better! Kids and judges go toes to nose in a fiendish frenzy of foul and fetid footwear for the title of the best of the worst! The contest takes place Friday, July 13th at 1p.m. at the Eagle River Commons. Registration begins at 12:15p.m. and the first 25 contestants receive an official T-shirt. The winner receives a year’s supply of Odor-Eaters products, fun gifts, trophy, and their champion rotten sneakers may be permanently enshrined in the Odor Eaters Hall of Fumes. Parents need to accompany kids to sign an event release form.

General Information Information Station: The Information Station is located next to the main stage at Mat Valley Federal Credit Union and the Bear Paw Tent. Registration for many of the events takes place here and all entertainers should check in with officials (except for 5K race). The tent is manned throughout the weekend. This is the place to come for lost and found and disappearing kids. Festival Merchandise: Tee shirts and hats will be available for sale in the Chamber office at CER Town Center (across the hall from the ER Library) through Friday at 4:00p.m. After that, all merchandise can be purchased at the main stage information station. First Aid: Alaska Professional Volunteers will be on hand all weekend beginning Friday at 11am with Teddy Bear Picnic and ending on Sunday at 4p.m. Mat-Su Federal Credit Union behind Information Station. On Saturday ~ Take The Shuttle!: Reliant Transportation will provide free Bear Paw Shuttle service within downtown Eagle River on Saturday of Bear Paw. Parking & Road Closures: 5K & Parade: Parking is limited, particularly on Saturday morning due to parade. Consider parking outside the business district on Saturday and either walking or hop aboard our free shuttle. All traffic will be routed around that area via Regency Drive. Downtown Old Glenn, Centerfield and Business Blvd will close in their entirety for the Bear Paw Festival Grand Parade and 5K from 10:15 to 12:15p.m. on Saturday. Closed all Weekend: Keep in mind that two of Business Boulevard in front of Valley River Center Vendors will be closed all weekend. The closure begins on Friday at 10am runs through Sunday at 6p.m. Safety is our highest priority. We know the road closure increases traffic congestion, but the higher priority is to protect families and children walking between the vendors, the mainstage and the carnival. If you are driving in the area, please be respectful and drive slowly… Thank you! Pets: We love our pets but unless your animal is very comfortable around lots of people, cars, noise and rides, it is a good idea to keep them at home when you visit the festival. If your well behaved pup is down for a festival visit and needs a drink of water, there is a watering station for puppies at Town Center Park Bricked Pavilion sponsored by Home Away From Home K-9 Day Care.
Slippery Salmon Olympics Just picture it… hula hoops, orange cones and a very slippery salmon! Throw in a glass of soda on a tray and you’ve got a race! Teams of two race against the clock for bragging rights and a real cool trophy! Slippery Salmon Olympics will be held at 1:15p.m. Saturday, JULY 14th. The proceeds from this hilarious event are given to our Chugiak-Eagle River Foundation ~ providing academic scholarships and grants to Chugiak-Eagle Nonprofits since 1995. Take note of the following road closures & restricted access points for this year’s festival in the Eagle River Business District. Special note for businesses, don’t forget that the temporary closures and restricted access can impact your shift schedules!
July 13, 14, 15 for Pedestrian Safety: Business Blvd will close between Mat-Valley Credit Union and Regency Drive from on Friday, July 13th at 10am until Sunday, July 15th at 6pm. Local access only to Timber Ridge & VCA Vet Clinic and the Storage Units will be maintained. Vetted access for members of Credit Union 1 will be available for Friday only. Traffic will be rerouted onto Regency Drive. Note: People Mover will have a temporary stop at Old Glenn and the South entrance to Business Blvd on Friday only. July 14 for 5K Race & Grand Parade: Old Glenn Hwy between Eagle River Loop & Eagle River Rd will close entirely from 10:45 am–12:15pm. Centerfield Drive will close in its entirety from 8:00am – 12:15pm. Business Blvd will close in its entirety 10:15 am – 12:15pm. Monte Road and Old Eagle River Road – will have restricted access between 8am – 12:15pm. Traffic will be rerouted up Eagle River Loop Road or Eagle River Road. Classic Car Show Classic Car Show Chepos Mexican Restaurant Present 2018 Bear Paw Classic Car Show Take a drive down memory lane and check out the classic cars at the Bear Paw Classic Car Show. Mercury’s Model T’s, Mustangs and more classics will be on hand Friday, July 13th from 6 – 9p.m. on Business Boulevard adjacent to Valley River Center. Check out some of the finest street machines in Alaska. Check out the Best Imports, Best Truck, Best Street Machine, Best Sports Car, and many more. STAGING INSTRUCTIONS To access car show area, please turn onto Business Blvd at Taco Bell. You will be vetted into the car show venue from the North side of Business Blvd. Staging begins at 5:00p.m. There are no entry fees or admission for vehicles or for spectators. Registration is at the event. Business Blvd closes at 10a.m. & staging within the Road Closure will begin no earlier than 5pm. Please plan to arrive by 6pm and follow the stagers instructions on placement of your vehicle along Business
