DAY CAMP Kids Cooking Camps

During this week long camp, kids will learn food safety practices, measurements, temperature control, thermometer calibration, easy prep, and meal planning. Sponsor: Bear Valley Community Association Camp Bear Valley offers swimming, gymnastics, tennis and rock climbing lessons: biking, hiking and other outdoor experiences: the summer reading program at the library, journal writing, cooking activities, art with Debbie Houseman. Sponsor: Alaska Botanical Garden ABG hosts this popular summer day camp modeled after the Cooperative Extension Service’s Junior Master Gardener Program. This eight-week outdoor, experiential program engages youth in botany, soil science, ecology, nutrition and gardening, and serves to ignite the flame of interest in nature. Children are able to grow a crop from seed to harvest. Produce is donated to Bean’s Cafe and the Children’s Lunchbox – it’s kids growing food for kids. AFAA resident Suzuki artist Koy Haven invites beginning string players and their families for a summer jump start to the school year. The Suzuki method begins with listening, focuses on repetition, and requires parent involvement. EXCEL Summer Camp is a month-long career readiness skills camp located in Anchorage. High school students from across Alaska participate in career strands in which they receive hands-on experience, industry certifications, and instruction in the steps necessary after high school to enter these careers. Students also participate in outdoor leadership camping trips and an optional driver’s education course. Finally, students receive intensive SAT, ACT, and Work Keys testing preparation. They will be eligible to earn high school credit and dual college credit. This year’s camp will feature these three career strands: •
Culinary Arts – Students will learn the basics of culinary arts in a full commercial kitchen and receive their Safe Serve Food Handler certification.

Construction & Heavy Equipment Operation – Students will participate in hands-on construction projects and receive NCCER Certifications.

First Responder – Students will receive their Emergency Trauma Technician and Wilderness First Aid Certifications.

Activities included are fundamentals of the game, hitting and smart throwing.
