Do you have questions about enrolling your child in school? The Los Angeles Air Force Base School Liaison Officer (SLO) is here to help you find the answers you need. The average military family moves 9 to 12 times throughout K-12 education. With each move, military children face many school-related challenges. The School Liaison Officer is your advocate. California schools are responsible for California State learning standards. Each school’s academic performance Index (API) and climate survey can be found at http://dq.cde.ca.gov/dataquest/

School Standardized Testing Season Is Coming! Why do schools conduct standardized testing?

Annual testing provides teachers, schools, and the Department of Education with a great deal of information. Testing helps gauge whether schools are meeting the state's standard of "adequate yearly progress." Poor results could indicate that the curriculum needs to be realigned with state standards or that teachers need to modify their instructional methods. Additionally, teachers gain a great deal of information about the performance of individual students that enables them to meet the particular needs of the child. Parents can check the schools progress and student performance improvements plans by going to http://dq.cde.ca.gov/dataquest/ and locating the school’s report card.

Testing Tips for Parents:

May 10, 5 p.m. at Fort MacArthur Community Center Ballroom

Awards & Refreshments

1. Encourage your child and remain positive. If they feel good about themselves, they will do their best. Children who are afraid and anxious will likely make mistakes. If your child is likely to experience anxiety about the test, practice some relaxation techniques they can use while taking tests. 2. Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast. Children who are tired are less able to handle the demands of a test. 3. Don't judge a child on the basis of a single test score. Test scores are not perfect measures of what a child can do. 4. Educational games and programs that engage your child can help them learn how to follow directions carefully. 5. Provide books and magazines for your youngster to read at home. By reading new materials, a child will learn new words that might appear on a test. Ask your child's school about a suggested outside reading list. 6. If your child needs special accommodations, make sure you communicate with their teacher to ensure your child has the best chance to demonstrate their abilities.
