Thursday, May 13, 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Learn budgetary basics, saving tips, and how to survive in this high cost area. This is a mandatory class for all O1 & O2 who are new to Los Angeles AFB. All military and civilians may attend.
Many of you at LAAFB have been watching the evening news broadcasts or reading media websites regarding COVID-19 impacts to communities across the state. For your awareness, Los Angeles AFB will continue mandatory telework for all SMC personnel; with the exception of identified mission essential personnel supporting either LAAFB or leadership-designated space acquisition missions. All Airman and Family Readiness Center’s personnel are teleworking, but will work with you to meet the requirement of the Transition Assistance Program, and the Casualty Program. WEDNESDAY, MAY 5 | 6 P.M. - 7:10 P.M. In honor of Cinco de Mayo, the Community Center is hosting an online game of LOTERIA where players compete against other players for prizes. This traditional Mexican card game of chance is similar to BINGO, but uses illustrated images instead of numbers. This online version can be streamed using a tablet or PC/MAC. Participation is free. To sign into the game participants will click on the URL code posted on our Facebook page the day of the event, no more than 30 minutes before game time. We will arrange prize pickup for winners after the games are finished.

MAY 22-23 | LOWER KERN RIVER | AGES 16+ $75 Active Duty Air Force & Dependents • $175 All Others Join ODR for a weekend trip to the Lower Kern River for some whitewater rafting and camping. The Lower Kern is an exciting afternoon run that packs a serious punch. Five miles, five great Class IV rapids, one thrilling jump rock! When you are not getting drenched by glorious waves, enjoy a relaxing swim in the calm pools, and see the abundance of wildlife. You can’t ask for more in one afternoon of whitewater rafting on the Lower Kern River. Afterwards we will be setting up camp at Headquarters Campground and preparing a backcountry dinner.
MAY 28-30 | ISABELLA LAKE | AGE 16+ $125 Active Duty Air Force & Dependents • $450 All Others Spend the Memorial Day weekend with ODR learning to whitewater kayak! This 101 class starts on the flat water of Isabella Lake, where you learn essential boating skills such as the wet-exit, self-rescue, partner-assisted rolls, and efficient stroke technique. At the end of the morning session, we break for a hearty lunch and preview the afternoon’s challenges. We spend the afternoon on the lake developing more of the steering and balancing skills needed to do river maneuvers such as peel-outs, ferries, and eddy turns. These and other techniques are required to become a safe, efficient whitewater kayaker.
JUNE 12-13 | CATALINA ISLAND | AGE 16+ $60 Active Duty Air Force & Dependents • $145 All Others Join ODR for a multiday “solo” backpacking expedition from Two Harbors to Little Harbor on Catalina Island. This trip will be focused on teaching/guiding participants in the skills and gear needed to facilitate their own solo adventures in the backcountry. We will depart for Catalina on Saturday morning and arrive at Two Harbors, from there we will be hiking overland through the beautiful Catalina backcountry (5.7 miles, moderately strenuous) to a beach campsite, spending a night beach camping under the stars hiking back Sunday morning and departing Catalina. All the necessary gear (backpack, stove, tent, etc.) will be provided by ODR.
JUNE 30 | SAN PEDRO | AGE 13+ $55 Active Duty Air Force & Dependents • $145 All Others Join ODR for a socially distant afternoon 1/2 day private boat charter on the Redondo Special out of Redondo Beach Sportfishing! Single day fishing license, rod rental, tackle, and a $15 galley credit are included. Fish cleaning and filleting is available on the boat for a small cash fee ($1-2/fish). 19

Before and After School Program provides age-appropriate childcare with quality programming, youth activities and events. Clubs, Activities, and USDA approved meals and snacks are offered. Transportation to and from select schools is available. The program focuses on team building, cognitive growth, and development of social awareness and problem-solving skills. Youth & Teen Programs (Ages 9-18) This program provides recreational options for dependents of active duty, retired military, DoD employees, contractors, or residents living on base under a Tierra Vista lease contract. Interested in Becoming a Family Child Care Provider? COVID-19 has shut down much of our country. Most of us are working from home while schools and daycares are closed. This pandemic is disheartening on many levels, but have you secretly enjoyed all the time you are able to spend with your children? Reading in blanket forts, rediscovering how cool Legos are, cooking together? Seriously how cute was your little one doing push-ups with you this morning? How about that connection you made with your older child when you involved them in one of your favorite hobbies? Right now, is a great time to start the process of becoming a Family Child Care Provider. Get a head start now so when things return to normal, you’ll be ready for a new normal!
MSAC is designed to provide child care for spouses to attend approved appointments related to key aspects of military life. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS •
Spouse of a member of the Military Service Active Duty or Reserve/Guard Member in an active duty status

Member of the Military Service Active Duty, Reserve/Guard Member in an Active Duty status, or DoD Civilian

Assigned to, living or working on the installation
•
Spouse must be attending an approved appointment

Family swim is limited to one household per reservation

Swimmers must wear a face mask upon entry/exit

All swimmers must shower prior to entering the pool

Floatation devices must be USCG approved
•
No water-wings, floating swim suits, or inflatables
•
Lifeguard may require unsafe swimmers to wear one of our provided life vests or puddle jumpers
•
No food or drinks allowed on deck (water is ok)
•
All swimmers must wear proper swim attire
•
No t-shirts, tank tops, gym shorts, etc.
Effective January 2021:
Graduate tuition for Active Duty Military, Selected Reserve, and National Guard will be $380 for both classroom and online courses. Undergraduate for the same category will be $250 for both classroom and online classes. Summer: May 31 - July 30
