California’s desert campgrounds transform into hospitable playgrounds for hikers, mountain bikers, photographers, and star gazers during the fall season. Here are a few of the incredible desert campgrounds within driving distance from Los Angeles.
5 4
3
Borrego Palm Canyon Campground 2
Located in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, just outside of Borrego Springs, CA; this campground is a short driving distance from the park’s natural slot canyon known as “The Slot.” This campground boasts an intermediate 5-mile round trip hike to Hellhole Palms, an actual desert palm tree oasis.
2 Black Rock Campground Black Rock Campground is home to one of the thickest forests of the endemic Joshua tree in all of Joshua Tree National Park. Some of the world’s most popular rock climbing sites can be found within a half-hour drive of the campground, as well as many hiking trails and incredible views of the low desert.
4 Tuttle Creek Campground Sitting at the foot of Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the continental US, Tuttle Creek Campground is the best of both the desert and mountain worlds. With striking views of some of the most impressive peaks in the Sierra Nevada, this desert campground is a popular spot for landscape photographers. Water is only available between the months of March and October, so be sure pack in plenty.

3 Ricardo Campground Ricardo Campground is Red Rock Canyon State Park’s crown jewel. Sitting at the foot of awe-inspiring 300 foot tall red sandstone-curtained cliffs, these colorful and extravagantly eroded rock formations are the quintessential backdrop for any old western movie. A small network of hiking trails are also available on first-come first-served basis.
5 Mesquite Springs Campground The furthest campground on our list and sitting in the northeast corner of Death Valley National Park, Mesquite Springs Campground is often considered to be one of the quietest and darkest campgrounds in the country. On clear nights, it isn’t uncommon at Mesquite Springs to be able to see the Milky Way Galaxy with the naked eye, making it very popular with star gazers and astronomy enthusiasts. This one is pretty far off of the beaten path and there are no spigots, so be sure to bring more water with you than you think you’ll need.

Christmas Break Academic Activities •
December is an exhilarating and busy time of the year! It’s filled with special events, holidays, and family-friendly activities everyone can enjoy. It also gives us some much needed vacation time. While it is an exciting moment for many children to travel and spend quality time with their families, it is equally important to remember to continue to promote academic growth and success.
•
Simple activities like creating your own board game with paper and markers, planning science experiments with safe everyday household items, or even dreaming up stories that send your imagination on a journey, can be captivating and educational. What’s more, there are many local places to explore that offer adventures and great opportunities to learn. Take your child on a trip to the aquarium, museum, or zoo. Want to liven it up? Have you or your child draw up a scavenger hunt that the whole family can participate in at a park or playground.
•
These activities offer children the ability to have fun while challenging themselves through experimentation, exploration, and hands-on learning. Research shows that children who incorporate academic concepts through fun and engaging activities retain more information. Such activities help them maintain and refine their academic skills so that they will be prepared when school resumes. Take advantage of these teachable moments during a refreshing and lively break.
