editor’s note
Don’t believe everything you hear! Greece is more than just the folklore stories. It’s not all about syrtaki, tzatziki, white houses, and Zorba the Greek. If you’ve been here for a while, you’ve probably noticed that. In a world with too many tourists, we ask you to dare to be a traveler, dare to be an explorer. Forget the predictable itineraries and cliché selfies—being a traveler means surprises, diving into the culture and collecting stories, not souvenirs. Athens is a rough, honest, diverse, and extraordinary city. Explore the lively chaos of the local markets, admire the hidden –or not so hidden– graffiti, walk the parks, find quirky bars with unique decorations that aren’t in travel brochures, connect with locals (Greeks are usually friendly, and most of the time our English is not that bad, although language is not a barrier when there’s a will for connection). Enjoy the tasty street food, dance at spontaneous concerts and wander through the unpredictability with curiosity. It’s all about appreciating the imperfections!
So, leave the guidebook behind and enjoy this opportunity to broaden your worldview. Don’t just tour Athens; live it, breathe it, and collect memories that will be unforgettable.

1. Πανικός (Pa-ni-kos) / Panic
The term “panic” has its origins in the mischievous god Pan, who was notorious for the wild fear and uproar he caused wherever he went.
2. Γαλαξίας (Ga-la-xi-as) / Galaxy
The term “galaxy” (from the Greek word “γάλα”(gala), meaning milk) originated from mythology, it is supposed to be the path that Hera’s milk traced when, as she was breastfeeding Hercules, she learned he was Zeus’s illegitimate son and threw the infant into the sky.
3. Πλανήτης (Pla-ni-tis) / Planet
“Planet” is a derivative of the Greek word “πλάνης” (planis), meaning a wanderer without a permanent address. So, planets are essentially the nomads of the night sky!
4. Ακροβάτης (A-kro-va-tis) / Acrobat
The term “acrobat” is a combination of ἄκρος + βαίνω (akros + veno), signifying walking on tiptoes or edges.
5. Μέντορας (Me-nto-ras) / Mentor
This word comes from the name “Mentor.” Mentor was a friend of Odysseus (Ulysses) and advisor to Telemachus, as depicted in Homer’s Odyssey
6. Σκίτσο (Ski-tso) / Sketch
This term originated from the ancient Greek word “σχέδιος” (schedios), signifying something temporary and makeshift.
7. Συμπόσιον (Sy-mbo-si-on) / Symposium
In ancient Greece, the “symposium” (συν + πόσις, (syn + posis) meaning “drinking together”) wasn’t just a gathering; it was a party of thinkers! Men gathered for both intellectual discussions and, of course, some quality wine drinking.
8. Πειρατής (Pi-ra-tis) / Pirate “Pirate” sails from the Greek “πειρώμαι” (pirome), the word for those daring souls attempting bold and sometimes not-so-legal adventures.
9. Βούτυρο (Vou-ti-ro) / Butter
Journey back to the time when butter was more than just a spread—it was the greek “βούτυρον” (voutiron) from the greek words βοῦς + τυρός, βοῦς (vous) meaning cow and τυρός (tiros), meaning cheese.
10. Βόμβα (Vom-va) / Bomb
A blast from the past! “Bomb” in Greek, or “βόμβα”, traces its roots back to the ancient Greek “βόμβος” (vomvos), a word that literally meant continuous noise.

NO NEED FOR A SCRIPT!
We run until we become weary from our own speed, attempting to see and grasp everything each moment and place has to offer. Yet, the essence of visiting a diverse and mosaic-like city such as Athens lies in enjoying it not as tourists, but as genuine parts of it. Sometimes, it’s an absolute thrill to let spontaneity be your guide. Take a stroll through the city and let its hidden gems and quirky character surprise you at every turn.
One of my favorite adventures is navigating the city using buses with odd or even numbers only. Another idea is to take a leisurely walk, making a turn every three streets. This can happen effortlessly in the lively neighborhoods of Kipseli, Pagrati, or Plaka. They have the density needed for this game and corners of rare beauty. So, I suggest you take metro lines 1 or 3 to Monastiraki station and lose yourself in the crowd. Go straight until you enter the Plaka neighborhood and turn every three streets. Let your steps and mind wander freely. This city has so much to offer. Follow its unpredictable rhythm!”

Impromptu live performances happen everywhere, especially near the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Feel free to show your appreciation with a small reward, whether it’s a smile, a flower, or some money. They deserve it! These guys make our days brighter!
Immerse yourself in the expressions of young artists through their street art in Athens’ coolest neighborhoods. Exarcheia, a vibrant hub of youth culture, takes pride in its used vinyl and book shops, fantastic guitar stores, and graffiti art. Metaxourgeio, another artsy district, also showcases street art around every corner. Grab a coffee and take a leisurely stroll and let the city’s walls tell the stories of its creative residents.

Farmers' Market (aka laiki agora)
A fascinating Greek tradition, not easily found in other places, persists to this day. In Greece, its roots trace back to the Ottoman Empire, known as a “pazari” (bazaar or open market) and legally established in 1929.
Typically held once a week on a specific street in each neighborhood, these markets open early in the morning and last until noon, giving producers the chance to sell their products direct to consumer. Beyond their commercial value, these outdoor markets still hold elements of the ancient agora; they are meeting places where people can communicate.
Once a habit of older individuals, now increasingly younger people are returning to these markets for their weekly grocery shopping, attracted by the variety and lower prices. Especially on Saturdays, when most people aren’t working, these markets combine shopping with meeting friends, discussions on the go, or an after shopping coffee.
At these markets you’ll find a wide array of fruits and vegetables, clothes, underwear, flowers, fish, eggs, honey, dried fruits, kitchen items, and more.

Here you canfind products at low prices and take a stroll in Agios Panteleimonas area, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city where many immigrants have lived for years, maintaining its authenticity.

In a metropolis like Athens, social stratifications are inevitable. As it happens, this is reflected in its residential areas as well, giving rise to the formation of both working-class and wealthier neighborhoods. This configuration has evolved alongside the expansion of Athens’ cityscape, shaped by geographical and historical factors. Below, you’ll find three distinctive examples for each.
KAISARIANI | East
A serene area with rich historical heritage, Kaisariani was founded by refugees who sought shelter after the Asia Minor catastrophe in 1922. This historical backdrop remains integral to the city’s identity, a source of pride. Additionally, Kaisariani is closely connected to the resistance against the Nazi occupation (1941-1944). The Kaisariani shooting range was the place where many Greek communists were executed by German occupation forces. The neighborhood is full of numerous charming taverns, offering traditional food and wine, many of which have preserved their original charm.
PERAMA | West
Although Perama has ancient roots, today’s neighborhood also owes its existence to refugees from Asia Minor. The construction of the shipyards in 1928 became a defining feature of the area, and a significant portion of its residents sought employment there. Despite challenging working conditions, the shipyard workers developed a strong labor consciousness and engaged in union activity. Perama remains a genuine working-class neighborhood, maintaining its simplicity. Taking a stroll in Perama is undoubtedly a unique experience.
from high to low EXPLORE
NEA FILADELFIA | Northwest
Another neighborhood shaped by the influx of refugees from Asia Minor, Nea Filadelfia remains engaged with its history. Construction of the refugee settlements started in 1924 and was characterized by tile roof houses with small gardens, elements that still endure and contribute to the area’s unique character. Nea Filadelfia is a vibrant neighborhood with its own market and a variety of entertainment options.

KIFISIA | North
A green oasis within the city, Kifisia has distinctive architecture, impeccable urban planning, and an abundance of pedestrian and bicycle paths. Renowned for its market, beautiful cafes, and restaurants, Kifisia has been a place of vacation and retreat since the Ottoman era. By the late 19th century, it became a beloved holiday spot for wealthy Athenians, and it was transformed eventually into one of the wealthiest areas of Athens. A major event in the area is the Flower Exhibition, which began in 1954 in Platanos Grove, as Kifisia was widely known for the abundance of different flowers growing there.
PALAIO PSIHIKO | Northern Outskirts of the Center
Situated just a few kilometers away from the city center, Palaio Psihiko is one of Athens’ most beautiful neighborhoods. Sparsely populated, with a lot of greenery, tranquility, and stunning houses, its reconstruction began in 1923, inspired by English garden cities. Over the years, Palaio Psihiko has successfully preserved its architecture and its artistic and historical character by protecting all historical residences from mass demolition and the influx of apartment buildings, which is sadly not the case for many other areas of Attica. Today, Palaio Psihiko has 75 buildings under historic perservation, all of them unique examples of 20th century architecture.
GLYFADA | South
Glyfada stands out as one of the more “privileged” areas in Attica location wise, due to its proximity to the seaside. The first houses in this suburb were built in 1920, and the beautiful nearby beach quickly became a tourist hot spot. Divided into Upper and Lower Glyfada, the lower part is more vibrant with a commercial center, entertainment venues, and a modern city feel. It offers excellent transportation, a stunning beach, four marinas, a golf course, a football field, and swimming pools with tennis and basketball courts. In contrast, Upper Glyfada is a quieter area, close to Mount Hymettus, providing a retreat from the hustle and bustle.

DANCE FIRST. THINK LATER.
Traditional Greek dances, such as Kalamatianos and Syrtos, embody the nation’s rich heritage. These expressive, region-specific dances are still performed at events and weddings, fostering and cultivating community bonds. Consider dancing along with the locals at traditional fairs (panigiri)–it’s not as difficult as it appears and can be enjoyable. Additionally, take a look at the Greek Traveller website, where you will find a range of lessons conducted in English. Why not give it a shot (or a swirl)?

Experiences f ro ruoy lyliadfi e .
If you enjoy daily visits to different types of Greek establishments but find yourself at a loss when friends in your homeland ask with curiosity, “so, what’s so special about these places you keep going to while staying in Greece?” fear not. The texts bellow were prepared to help you give the right answers.
KAFENIO:
The traditional kafenio in Greece is a modest space that opens early in the morning and mainly offers Greek coffee and frapp´e. From noon onwards, you can enjoy Greek spirits such as wine, tsipouro, ouzo, and beer, typically served with meze. These kinds of places usually close early in the evening. Kafenio, as a form of entertainment and socialization, has been connected to the history of Greece, and those ones that have remained authentic are a great part of its tradition and culture.
TAVERN:
A tavern is a place where you’ll find many options for traditional Greek cooked dishes as well as grilled meats and fish. It is associated with family outings as well as gatherings with friends. Going to the tavern is an outing that combines food and drink (mainly wine but also tsipouro, ouzo, and beer), and is often also accompanied by live traditional music. A visit to the tavern can last for several hours with continuous orders of food and drinks, lively discussions and laughter.
RESTAURANT:
A restaurant is a more refined choice that offers dishes beyond the usual traditional Greek ones. It’s a great choice if you want to be in a clean environment where the only thing that matters is the food or you want to try a specific chef’s recipe. Prices are usually higher compared to taverns, and it’s wise to make a reservation beforehand. Good, bottled wine and cocktails that complement the flavors of the dishes are the preferred drink choices.
MAGHIRIO:
If you want to try true traditional Greek recipes, then you must try a magirio (eatery). A variety of traditional Greek dishes are cooked every day and are ready to be served as soon as you make your choice. Prices are usually lower than in a tavern or restaurant, and you can either dine in (for a shorter time period than in a tavern, though) or take away. Eateries are proof of how homey, comforting, rich and tasty Greek cuisine really is!

Sundays in the Sun
In Greece, Sunday afternoons are all about family get-togethers, home-cooked meals with friends, or a picnic outdoors and with city strolling. This is a time for ourselves and our loved ones, especially those people we can’t see during the week, due to work and daily routine. Sunday afternoons become even more wonderful when the sun shines. For many, it’s a remedy for the Sunday scaries. And even though some might like to stay in and relax, we prefer our Sundays full of sunshine, friends, cozy catch-ups, and streets filled with the smell of delicious food.
What to Do
PICNIC IN THE PARK, HILLS OR NEARBY MOUNTAINS
Find a beautiful spot in nature. Prepare your favorite food and invite your friends to tag along. Each one can contribute in a way. Someone takes care of the picnic blanket, another one is in charge of drinks and music, you all cook a little something, and you’re ready. With minimal expenses, you’ll have a perfect DIY Sunday afternoon.
TRADITIONAL TAVERNA
Athens is filled with traditional taverns, most of them with great history. There, you’ll find delicious dishes that taste like home. If the taverna has live music, you’ve hit the jackpot. Before you pay your visit, look up their history online; you’ll surely find interesting things to share with friends while waiting for your order.
WEEKEND
SEASIDE FISH TAVERNS
In Greece, we don’t part with the sea even during the winter. In seaside taverns you can enjoy fresh fish and seafood even in the colder months. Some say the experience is better with the sea in turmoil. For an even more wholesome experience, combine your visit to a fish tavern with a day trip to a nearby island, such as Evia or Salamina.

EVERY COUNTRY HAS THESE CERTAIN DAYS THAT ARE ESTABLISHED AS HOLIDAYS. SOME OF THEM ARE HISTORICAL AND SOME ARE RELIGIOUS OR CELEBRATIONS ROOTED IN OUR TRADITION. ALL OF THEM THOUGH HAVE A UNIQUE WAY OF BEING CELEBRATED. HERE ARE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ONES:
March 25th
Greek Holidays
On this day we celebrate the beginning of the Greek War of Independence against Ottoman rule in 1821. Although the insurrection in many regions preceded this date, March 25th is considered a reference point from the early days of the Revolution because coincides with the relegious celebration of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. It is celebrated with student and military parades and other festive events.
October 28th
On this day, Greece celebrates “Όχι” (the word “no” in Greek), that was uttered to reject the ultimatum from Fascist Italy to surrender in 1940. The immediate consequence of this refusal was the country’s entry into World War II. At 5:30 in the morning of the same day, the Greco-Italian War began with the invasion of Italian troops through Albanian border. It is also celebrated with student and military parades and other festive events.
Clean Monday
This is a movable feast and its day depends on each year’s date for the Greek Orthiodox Easter. It marks the beginning of Lent for the Orthodox Church and simultaneously signifies the end of Carnival. This day marks the beginning of the fasting period that lasts for 40 days. Celebrated mainly outdoors (like a picnic), it involves flying kites and eating the traditional flatbread (lagana), bean soup, and seafood. “Halva” is the sweet associated with this day.
August 15th
It is the day when the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated. In Greece, due to its date in the summer, in the middle of August, it determines the summer vacations of workers and the days before and after when the islands are full of travelers. It is customary to fast during this period as well. In most parts of Greece, it is celebrated with outdoor festivals featuring traditional music from the region, drinks and dance.
WORKERS’ Day (May 1st)
A worldwide public holiday and a milestone day for the struggles of workers. On this day in 1886, workers revolted through their labor unions in Chicago, demanding an eight-hour workday and better working conditions. This uprising of the Chicago workers triggered labor movements in many other countries as well. In Greece, it is celebrated with a demonstration organized by labor unions, workers, and many people who want to keep the significance of that day alive.

Discovering Athens’ Nearby Mountains
Most of us live an urban life. We are often glued to desks and screens. Why not take a breather and hike Athens’ nearby mountains? Why not let our lungs, worn out from the city smog, breathe in some fresh air for a change? Since there is so much beautiful nature surrounding Athens, we are suggesting three hiking routes close to our beloved capital, even a city that holds a special place in our hearts can be tiring sometimes.
INTO THE WILD
PENTELI
40 minutes from Athens - 27km
Mount Penteli, the second-tallest mountain in Attica at 1,109 meters, lately has been greatly impacted by wildfires. However, it’s still worth a visit as it provides excellent trails across the entire mountain. You can take a circular route that starts and ends in Drosia, particularly at Amadryades Square. Another option is the path that passes by the mountain’s chapels—Prophet Elias, Prophet Nikitas, and Agios Loukas—and through the old quarries of Dionysos. This trail ends at the old Railway Station. Marble from Mount Penteli is of exceptionally high quality and was used to construct most of Acropolis’ structures.
PARNITHA
45 minutes from Athens - 29km
Just 45 minutes away from the center of Athens, Mount Parnitha invites hikers to explore well-maintained trails amidst fir and pine trees, suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers. Even though a great part of it has suffered from last summer’s wildfires, it is still a great place to visit as it provides a choice of routes, varying in duration and difficulty. One of the most popular trails starts from the Mpafi mountain lodge and descends to Thrakomakedones. Initially, it winds through a scenic fir forest and then navigates the impressive Chouni gorge, in a 2-hour hike. Don’t forget to pause and enjoy the breathtaking view of Western Attica. This trail is comfortable even during the summer, thanks to ample shade that the trees provide along most of its parts.
KITHAIRON
1 hour from Athens64 km
Located on the western borders of Attica, near Boeotia, Mount Kithaironas is just an hour away from the city and offers beautiful trails for you to explore. If you start your journey from Vilia, which is only 1.5 km past the village, you’ll see a sign showing the way to Kithaironas. As you go up the slope, a narrow asphalt road will take you to Petalo, which is at an altitude of 1,090 m. There, you’ll find the “Vangelis Tsakos” mountain lodge, with its paved terrace, great views, and large picnic area. The national hiking trail 22 is also marked through this area, encouraging you to explore it.

It is wonderful to travel, to enjoy different paths, to test oneself in new conditions, and to better understand oneself, to be surprised by new scents and savor unfamiliar tastes, to admire new places and meet all kinds of people. Athens is beautiful, but here, we offer you some ideas for short trips close to the capital so that you can explore all that Greece has to offer.
BY BUS BY TRAIN BY BOAT
TRIKALA & METEORA
Just 4 hours away from Athens by train you can find the charming town of Trikala and the captivating Meteora. The town’s allure is owed to Letheios River and its historic landmarks, spacious squares, parks, and pedestrian streets. About an half hour trip from the town, Meteora is a stunning complex of rock formations.
The monasteries built atop some of these rocks make up the second most significant monastic community in Greece today, following Mount Athos. While there were originally thirty monasteries, only six remain active, all of them have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1988.
The original way of accessing the monasteries of Meteora was by climbing, that symbolized the desire for isolation and the search for the divine element.

Having served as the first capital of the modern Greek state, Nafplio’s heart is Constitution Square, reflecting Italian aesthetics with many monuments and historical structures. To reach the imposing Palamidi Fortress, standing 216 meters above the town, you must climb 999 steps. However, Nafplio’s most iconic landmark is the widely photographed Bourtzi Fortress, built on the islet of Agioi Theodoroi. Nafplio is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns in Greece.
*Nafplio is filled with unique boutique shops, so prepare yourself for some shopping as well.
Majestic mountains, vast coastlines, lighthouses, the rejuvenating thermal baths of Aidipsos, ancient monasteries, waterfalls, and charming inns—all can be found on the island of Euboea, Greece’s second-largest island, after Crete. Its capital, Chalkida, is friendly, relaxed, and easily accessible, making it the ideal spot for leisurely strolls along the waterfront. There you’ll find great taverns where you can try different kinds of meat and the “tyropitari” cheese pie. Euboea’s unique charm and captivating views over the Aegean make it truly special.

DELPHI
The ancient Greeks regarded Delphi as the center of the world. The pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, where the Oracle of Apollo delivered prophecies, was considered the omphalos, the “navel of the world”. In perfect harmony with the breathtaking landscape and its profound sacred significance, Delphi, during the 6th century B.C., truly stood as the religious epicenter and symbolic unifier of the ancient Greek world. Delphi is currently both a municipality and a contemporary town. Situated alongside the ancient Greek sanctuary, Delphi is one of the most important and interesting archaeological sites you will find here.

Peculiar spots
Athens is full of both small and bigger surprises. Its ambiance can change every few meters, adding to its charm. Bellow you can find some unique and truly peculiar spots that are truly worth a visit, as parts of the puzzle called “Athens”.
BOOZE
BOOZE is one of Athens’ most unique creative spaces. It opened its doors in 1989 in the beautiful building located at 57 Kolokotroni Street. A hub for art and social gatherings, it hosts various events, including art shows, dance performances, concerts, talks, workshops, and book presentations. Visitors often engage in chess games, and socializing comes naturally. In Greek, it is known as “Κ.Ο.Τ.Ε.Σ.,” an acronym that stands for “Smoking Teams for Art and Visual Compositions”. Don’t miss the chance to grab a drink and soak in the atmosphere. Keep in mind that this is one of the few bars where smoking is allowed indoors.
TO TRENO STO ROUF
Railway Carriage Theater at Rouf
The Railway Carriage Theater “To Treno sto Rouf”, operating since 1997, is a unique cultural space located at the Rouf railway station in Athens. It features nine vintage carriages, including the authentic 1924 Orient Express “Greek Carriage” and a 1947 museum steam engine. Renovated carriages serve as a versatile venue, hosting theater, dance, and music performances, educational programs, children’s theater, festivals, exhibitions, screenings, seminars, and even romantic dinners in the summer. The train extends its artistic activities outdoors during the summer months to the station’s platform, providing a unique a blend of history and culture in a lively setting.
LIMBA
Experience the thrill at Greece’s first rage room, where you can unleash your anger by smashing anything from wine bottles to entire television sets. The name is likely inspired by the phrase “Θα τα κάνω όλα λίμπα” (tha ta kano ola limba), meaning “(I am so angry that) I will smash everything!” Enter one of the two rooms and let the party begin. One room is called the “Fragile Box”; the other one is called “Home”. Express your anger in a healthy way, paying just a small fee. Don’t forget, you can choose the music that will accompany your smashing, whether it’s classical, metal, folk, rock, or even the Macarena—whatever suits your mood.

While Athens might not be seen as particularly beautiful due to its dense construction with many plain apartment buildings and lack of trees, there are still charming spots to discover. The city’s appeal goes beyond its streets and structures. Some small streets stand out for their unique atmosphere, almost as if they were parts of another city. We’ve picked six of them, but thankfully, there are many more. If you decide to check them out, take a stroll through the entire neighborhood they’re in.
EMPEDOKLEOUS STREET, METS
A charming street located just behind the Panathenaic Stadium. From Arhimidous Street to Varnava Square, Empedokleous is a real beauty, with its lovely neoclassical buildings, flowerbeds, wide sidewalks, and palm trees that accompany your every step.
AMAZONON STREET, KERAMEIKOS
A quaint and delightful street with beautiful buildings and painted shutters, reminiscent of a village. It’s worth adjusting your route just to pass through it and get a sense of the Athens that could be...
DASKALAKI STREET, AMPELOKIPOI

alternative to the hectic Kifisias Avenue. While moving parallel to the big avenue, you won’t hear voices, horns, or be overwhelmed by the car fumes. All the apartment buildings on Daskalaki have small gardens on their ground floors, allowing you to enjoy the sight of trees and flowers.
THEMELI STREET, EXARCHIA
There aren’t many reasons to explore this peculiar street, except to check out the narrowest and most concealed alley in Athens. It has the charm of the narrow streets found on Greek islands or in Venice and Portugal.
HATZIGIANI MEXI STREET, HILTON AREA
A lush street situated behind Hilton Hotel, with a true Eu-
ropean atmosphere. Find the joy in looking up and admiring the trees, especially when they are in bloom. Similar to its nearby streets, it’s worth taking a detour to escape the frantic Vasilisis Sofias Avenue.
KATRAMI STREET, NEA FILOTHEI
Now, let’s explore a street within a neighborhood. Katrami is a small street full of laurel and olive trees, creating a tranquil environment where you can enjoy the silence. The low buldings allow the view to the sky, and you can walk carefree without rushing or worrying about cars distracting you. Most streets in Nea Filothei offer this serene experience, making it worthwhile to take a stroll through the entire neighborhood.

Famous writers about the Acropolis & Parthenon Experiences
SIGMUND FREUD 1904
In the book Sigmund Freud: His Life and Work by Ernest Jones, his visit in Athens is analyzed: “More than twenty years later he said that the amber-colored columns of the Acropolis were the most beautiful things he had ever seen. As he stood there he had a strange psychological experience which he described many years later in a letter to Romain Rolland. It was a strange refusal to believe in the reality of what lay before his eyes […]. Freud traced the origin of this sense of disbelief to the fact that in his poor childhood he would have found it improbable the idea of ever being able to visit such a wonderful place [...]”.
Sigmund Freud was an Austrian physician, physiologist, psychiatrist and founder of psychoanalysis. Freud visited the Acropolis once. That visit had caused him a strange disorder which occupied him for some time afterwards.
VIRGINIA WOOLF 1906 MARK TWAIN 1867
She visited Greece for the first time in September and October 1906. On this trip, her siblings contracted typhoid fever and her brother Toby died in London in November of the same year. From the book In the Land of the Moon, British Women Travelers in Greece : “The poorest people in Athens ‐and they all seem poor‐ have the pleasant habit of going up here [on the Acropolis] in the evening, when they have finished their work, as we go to our parks. They sit around on the ancient marbles, chatting and knitting. But they don’t spoil the place, like us tourists apparently, but rather make it human and familiar”.
Virginia Woolf was a British novelist and essayist, considered a pioneering and innovative literary artist of the 20th century. During the interwar period she was an important figure in the London literary society and a member of the Bloomsbury Group.
M. Twain arrived in Athens in 1867, as a stop in a trip to the Holy Land. He visited the Acropolis at night, sneaking out from the ship, which was in quarantine, with four fellow travelers. From the book Can-Cans, Cats and Cities of Ash :
“[…] The place seemed full of ghosts. I almost expected to see the Athenian heroes who lived twenty centuries ago burst out of the shadows and sneak into the temple they knew so well and cared for with so much pride… We walked carelessly and without a second thought to the ramparts of the Acropolis, which seemed floating to the voids, and we looked down–what a sight! What a wonderful sight! Athens under the moonlight!”
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known mainly by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer. Among his best-known books are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED. PARTHENON IS ALWAYS ILLUMINATED AT NIGHT, LIKE A BEACON THAT POINTS TO WHERE THE PORT IS. THE WHOLE CITY HAS BEEN BUILT ROUND ITS FOOTHILLS. BELOW THE TEMPLE THAT HAS EXISTED IN THE SAME PLACE FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS, LIES AN UNSURPASSED CITY THAT STRIKES A BALANCE BETWEEN THE EAST AND THE WEST.
