Take a piece of Greece with you…
We delight in bringing the 5th Free Athens issue out, despite the fact that summer has arrived a bit later this year, as high temperatures didn’t seem to get to our country as early as they usually do!
However, it has long been since we are in summer mood, so we introduce to you everything you need to dive deeply into Greek culture. Try to spot all the representative ingredients of the athenian city center, so that you’ll get a handle on what Athens is. Explore the capital of Greece beyond the limits of Acropolis and mingle with the locals, pronouncing typical Greek words (yes, as you can see, we have included a lot of them in this issue!). Moreover, dare to try several of the activities proposed in the following pages and thank us later (of course we are sure that you’ll have a great time!). In a word, live the athenian experience to the fullest!
We know that the tourism is the heavy industry of Greece, but we prefer to face you like guests rather than tourists, and besides, the ancient greek god Zeus (the father of all the gods) was also called “Xenios”, that means “patron of the hospitality” and we honor our hospitable past.
Three cheers for the Greek summer!

In Athens, you won’t miss two things: food and history. Both are everywhere! Both are precious, but not expensive! The numerous museums, in almost every corner of this city, prove that, if you love expanding your knowledge while on vacation, you are in the right place. Except for the museums already known to you, such as the New Acropolis Museum, there are many others that can really surprise you!
Nowadays, museums around the world, and for sure in the Greek capital city, are changing by becoming more interactive, thanks to the new technologies. Apart from the museums that deal with the long history and culture of Greece, in Athens you can also find a variety of smaller museums that deal with really interesting subjects, such as greek society and daily life, art, gastronomy, education and many more. With some of them having free entrance and special prices throughout the week and also often holding special excibitions, the only thing you have to do is to try and stay up to date and start exploring these small cultural places.
Our favorite museums also belong to these categories. The Herakleidon Museum aims to highlight areas of ancient Greek and Byzantine culture that till recently remained outside the interests of classical studies. From the first years of its operation, the Herakleidon Museum embraced the sciences and this was the catalyst in its evolution, from 2014 onwards, into a cultural center that discovers, projects and highlights the multiple and complex interrelationships between the sciences and art.
Another example is the Hellenic Motor Museum which is a significant culture point in Athens, giving its visitors the unique opportunity to experience the evolution of the car as reflected in the unique exhibits.
P.S. Regarding the modern, political and social history of Athens, mottos and graffitis show the difficult economic situation of our country or "shout" for freedom, equality and love. History in Athens, and to be honest in every city as vivid as the capital of Greece, is written every day!

Interesting
museum The best of all is... Athens!
Can you imagine a museum where the entrance is free? Where you can speak as loudly as you want, drink and eat whatever you want? A museum that never closes its doors? Oh, that would be awesome if it was real… And, hopefully, it is. This magical museum is the city of Athens. Even if you have no time to spend in a real museum, you can take a taste of history and art in every street of this city.
Ancient walls and big stones, where once upon a time, maybe a great philosopher might have stood. Streets that had been walked by warriors or famous politicians, such as Pericles or Eleftherios Venizelos. Just by looking around you, you will understand that Athenian history didn’t end when the ancient greek civilization did. The continuation is even more fascinating: Romans, Byzantine Empire and of course modern greek history have left their marks in the city.
In addition, during all those years many artists have lived and created in Athens, such as famous architects, poets and musicians. Statues and significand buildings are spread all over the city, so a simple walk can be transformed into a really interesting navigation in the city's history. Are you familiar with names such as Kostis Palamas, Alekos Fassianos, Dimitris Fotiadis, Melina Merkouri? If not, do a small research on the internet and get ready to explore some of the most strategic and culturally important points of Athens
Religion has played an important role in Greek history. You can find Christian orthodox churches all over the city. Most of them are open to visit, so you can take a glance on those buildings, which are so different from the Catholic ones. An interesting fact is that there are no mosques in Athens. The ones in function are illegal or unofficial, so it would be almost impossible to find them.

CULTURE
HELLENIC MOTOR MUSEUM
The Hellenic Motor Museum, after 12 years of continuous operation in Athens, is a cultural point of interest, giving its visitors the unique opportunity to experience the evolution of the automobile as reflected in the unique exhibits (its exhibitions display more than 110 cars from the 19th and the 20th century).
In addition, the spiral ramp that starts from the ground floor of the Capitol (a landmark building of Athens) and ends at the entrance of the Museum on the 4th floor, is architecturally inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum in New York, giving a sense of eternal movement to visitors. The organic architecture meets the history of the car, its technological evolution and its course in the 20th century.

The Young Athenian Man (Eros – Chronos
“The Young Athenian Man”* is a fascinating story written by Fondas Ladis, where a statue comes to life and escapes from the Museum of Athens.
Jacqueline Dubeau, a young French archeologist, falls in love with the statue of a young man, which is of unique value and beauty. The statue was discovered during the excavations for the subway in Athens, not long before the 2004 Olympic Games. At some point, Apollodoros, the statue, comes to life. So, can love achieve the unachievable? And how can anyone bridge the gap between two worlds when they are separated by 2,500 years? The play, published in Greek by Pyli editions a few years ago, unfolds in Athens, Paris and London, in places such as the Archeological Museum of Athens, the British Museum and the Louvre.
Are you ready to wander through space and time?
– Thanatos)
Fondas Ladis is a well-known Greek writer, poet, and journalist. He has written twenty-five books, which include novels, poetry, children’s literature, travel books, political and historical essays. His poems have been set to music by the internationally acclaimed composer Mikis Theodorakis (“Zorba the Greek”, “Z”) as well as by many other Greek composers. He has lived and worked abroad for many years and has been awarded a prize in an international play-writing competition in Rimini, Italy. He is a member of the Greek Journalists Union, the Greek Composer and Lyricists Union, the Greek Crime Fiction Club and a founding member and president of the non-profit archive and historical research society Mnimes (Memories).
PUBLISHED IN FRENCH TOO
The lyrical play "The Young Athenian Man, Éros, Chronos, Thanatos" by Fondas Ladis has been published in Paris by Les Cygnes publications, which specializes in drama and is headed by Monique de Montremy.
The work is divided into four acts and 35 scenes. It is now being translated into English as well.
The translation of this challenging – in many aspects – text is by the well-known Hellenist Marcel Durand, who also translated the numerous annotations at the end of the book. The cover of the French edition was designed by Xanthippe Miha-Bania.

All Day Café Bar Bartesera
Did you know?
The arcades (stoae) in the center of Athens
The arcades were a common shaded, closed passage in Ancient Athens, to avoid the intense heat during the hours of sunshine and for the gathering of citizens. The arcades of modern Athens (since 1883) followed the architectural trend of the early 19th cen-
tury in Paris and London. Most of the famous arcades of Athens, which were bustling with life, today highlight only their architectural uniqueness and beauty. However, going down Kolokotroni street, at number 25, Stoa Praxitelous, a building of 1937, became an “outdoor closed” area of a bar.
The place
The Stoa of Praxitelous and the “Bartesera”
The beauty of an old city like Athens also lies in the fact that there are people who wish to preserve its historical elements and develop them according to the needs of the time. Something like this happened with the arcade of Praxitelous. When a group of four decided to recreate the arcade and -according to its architecture- set up a bar, “Bartesera” was born. From the first bars of its kind, it created a new trend of reusing arcades.
Today, “Bartesera” is one of the most famous café bars in the city center. Famous for the allday enjoyment it offers and the quality of every service, as well as for the “view” of the Attic sky because of the open roof of the arcade. It opens since morning with a delicious brunch of special recipes, finger food, lunch and dinner options, as well as delicious sweets.
Signature cocktails are a trademark. These are creations that change depending on the season. “Bartesera” is also an ideal choice to experience the Athenian night as the locals do. Music plays an important role, so the DJs change frequently to create the best conditions for a good time. The setting is complemented by the people; warm and welcoming, typical example of Greek hospitality.

nerantzia sour orange tree
BITTER ORANGE IS THE NEW ORANGE
Bitter orange trees adorn the sidewalks of most neighborhoods in Athens. These trees are "our" roommates, neighbors, and friends. With them we bloom every year in the spring, with them we spend the winters, the autumns when the afternoon wind blows and the summers when we look for a little more coolness and water. Their orange coloured balls lend themselves to setting up little soccer matches in the middle of the street. Unfortunately, bitter oranges are not eaten raw, but they are made into a traditional sweet, the so-called “sweet of the spoon nerantzaki” with which our Greek grandmothers brought us up. Many say that trees with edible fruits should have been planted, but it is better that this did not happen: because every year in harvest time there would be blood shed in the city.

THE YELLOW HABIT
There are so many taxis in Athens that many claim that if they didn’t exist, the city’s huge traffic problem would have been solved. Getting into a taxi and the journey that follows, is an experience and we owe this to the taxi drivers. They never miss an opportunity to babble, tell a bunch of stories, listen to bizzare radio stations with unknown heavy folk songs - keep in mind that they sing along and often comment on what they hear. It is also worth noting that they have an opinion about everyone and everything. In recent years, because many young people have entered the profession, this phenomenon has started to decrease. But if you meet a figure described as above, you will understand what we are trying to explain to you...

OUTDOOR SCULPTURE GALLERY
Statues are the permanent residents of Athens along with the real ones. These marble and bronze presences stand in parts of the city and try to remind us of something, to tell us something. The truth is that the Municipality of Athens does not pay much attention to them, so they are usually dirty, hidden behind bushes or between shop tables, unlit and uncared. Of course, even the Athenians do not particularly appreciate them and rarely stand in front of a statue to admire it. Despite their obsolescence, there are so many that constitute an outdoor sculpture gallery worthy of respect and greater attention. However, they will always be there, eternally waiting to be discovered...

HOLY AND BREATHTAKING
The Acropolis hill and the Parthenon, was built in honor of the goddess Athena in the 5th century BC. and since then stands proudly above Athens. It is the trademark not only of our city, but also of whole Greece. If you ask a visitor what they know about our country, the first thing they will probably tell you is Acropolis. Even Athenians are always a little moved at the sight of it and look for opportunities to admire it. In this part of the city, it is as if all the history and values of Greece are condensed; although, if we want to be honest, almost nothing has remained the same since it was built. Perhaps, the only thing that has remained the same –roughly – is the Parthenon itself...

KIOSKS: ALL IN ONE
Kiosks are a local invention directly linked to the Greek culture. In the 60’s, when the telephone had not entered most homes, people went there to communicate. Also, the newspapers hanging on ropes attracted crowds of people who wanted to be the first to know the news of the day. Kiosk was the joy of children as they bought ice creams and lollipops. Also, the man working at the booth was always the one who knew everything about the neighborhood and the streets. Today kiosks are much bigger than back then, almost like mini markets, with variety of products. Kiosks can be life saving as many of them are open 24 hours a day.

CATS NOT SINGING “MEMORIES”
The number one stray animal in Athens. They come in all colors and sizes and always make you admire them – or envy them – with their wonderful postures, balance, sunbathing, slow and charming gait and games. The residents of the neighborhoods usually take care of them with food and makeshift shelters, so they can continue their vagrant life on the street without the stress of survival. Stray cats in Greece used to be called “tiled cats” because in the past the roofs of the houses were mostly made of tiles and the cats used to lounge on them. They also make you wonder how they keep themselves so clean in such a dirty city! We love cats a lot!

Neighborhoods around Acropolis
MONASTIRAKI KOUKAKI
It was named after the Monastery of Pantanassa. The specific Monastery, losing its assets during the 19th century, was degraded. So, because it «shrinked», the area was called Monastiraki [Greek words ending in -aki denote the diminutive of a larger concept. In this case, Monastiri (Monastery) became Monastiraki]. The area has always been associated with the trade of old and used things.
PSIRI
During the Ottoman period, it was a densely populated neighborhood, full of crafts and workshops. The neoclassical houses of the area that are preserved to this day, have common characteristics: they are twostorey, with a balcony and an inner courtyard.
THISSIO
Thissio is defined between the Acropolis and the hill of Philopappos. It took its name from the Temple of Hephaestus, inside the ancient Agora, which prevailed to be called Thissio!
Koukaki owes its name to the factory owner Georgios Koukakis, who built his house at the corner of Dimitrakopoulos and Georgakis Olympiou streets. For many years, this was the only house in the area. Today, Koukaki also includes the Makrygianni district, very picturesque, since there are still neoclassical buildings and interwar apartment buildings. It was named so, as the house of general Ioannis Makrygiannis (warrior of the Greek revolution) was in today’s Athanasiou Diakou street.
PLAKA
Plaka is the oldest district of Athens. Just below the Sacred Rock and the Parthenon, it was the core of the city in many historical periods. In Plaka, there are «spots» of the entire Greek history, since you find ancient Greek temples, mosques, monasteries and churches. Here, Karagiozis flourished. Here you find the neighborhood of Anafiotika built by islanders. In Arios Pagos, Justice was born as an expression of Democracy, when Orestes in the «Eumenides» was judged innocent of the murder of Clytemnestra.
SMOKING BARRELS
At the beginning of Herakleidon Street, where the ancient wall of Athens used to be, you will find Smoking Barrels. Authentic bar that combines the vintage with the modern element, just like the neighborhood. Clean drinks, good cocktails and «dirty music», purely analog. What do we mean? The vinyls don’t just decorate the place but are an integral part of the bar. Τhe DJ selects records from the shelves and plays music on the record player.

An entire city overlooking the Acropolis
The Acropolis for Athens and the Athenians is a frequent sight. A point of reference. A point that helps in orientation. An identity symbol. Of course, citizens are not impressed on a daily basis, precisely because of the frequency of sightings, but Acropolis still forms the center of the city. This tribute tries to give you a small picture of the atmosphere and the imprint of the Acropolis on the souls of the inhabitants.
The energy of space
Parthenon was built for the sake of goddess Athena, protector of the city and in fact during a period when Athens had reached its heyday. This fact states that the sanctity of site and the energy given by the believers of ancient religion to raise the stones cannot be erased no matter how many years pass. Beyond the religious concepts of time, Parthenon creates feelings of the absolute: absolute balance, harmony and beauty. The rock of Acropolis has been inhabited since 3000 BC. The aura of human history has been left in every stone and alley. It is no coincidence that those who tried to conquer Athens were afraid to «touch» the Parthenon, either out of fear or admiration.
The hangouts The inhabitants
As the reference point of entire city, Acropolis has become a hangout. By the term «hangout» we do not mean only the shops that adorn neighborhoods and streets. Yes, there are those that, respectful of the local architecture, add their own touch to the beauty of the landscape. Also, there are hangouts that have been created spontaneously by the citizens themselves. “Anafiotika” is filled with young groups, the so-called “rocks on the Acropolis” generously offer a view of the illuminated city, the road to the Observatory has been walked by thousands of couples, Dionysiou Areopagitou street filled with street musicians shows us another side of culture.
Everyone meets at Acropolis. It has always been the first choice of entertainment, the first choice of visitors who come from all over the world. But those who live or work daily in the area have incorporated the tranquility of the landscape. Below the Acropolis, the voices heard are voices of fun. Houses are enviable and full of life as locals still inhabit them. The Attic sun that beats on the marbles and generously gives its light, also illuminates the souls of those who walk under the Acropolis.

Famous writers wrote about the Acropolis and the Parthenon
Sigmund Freud | 1904
In the book Sigmund Freud: His Life and Work by Ernest Jones, this visit is analyzed: «More than twenty years later he said that the amber-colored columns of the Acropolis were the most beautiful things he had ever seen. As he stood there he had a strange psychological experience which he described many years later in a letter to Romain Rolland. It was a strange refusal to believe in the reality of what lay before his eyes […] Freud traced the origin of this sense of disbelief to the fact that in his poor childhood he would have found it improbable the idea of ever being able to visit such a wonderful place [...]»
Sigmund Freud was an Austrian physician, physiologist, psychiatrist and founder of psychoanalysis. Freud visited the Acropolis once. That visit had caused him a strange disorder which occupied him for some time afterwards.
Mark Twain | 1867
M. Twain arrived in Athens in 1867, as part of a trip to the Holy Land. He visited the Acropolis at night, sneaking out with four fellow travelers from the ship, which was in quarantine. From the book CanCans, Cats and Cities of Ash
“…The place seemed full of ghosts. I almost expected to see the Athenian heroes who lived twenty centuries ago burst out of the shadows and sneak into the temple they knew so well and cared for with so much pride… We walked carelessly and without a second thought to the ramparts of the Acropolis, which seemed floating to the voids, and we looked down – what a sight! What a wonderful sight! Athens under the moonlight!»
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known mainly by the pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer. Among his best-known books are “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”.
Virginia Woolf | 1906
Virginia Woolf (1906)
She visited Greece for the first time in September and October 1906. On this trip, her siblings contracted typhoid fever and her brother Toby died in London in November of the same year. From the book In the Land of the Moon, British Women Travelers in Greece:
“The poorest people in Athens -and they all seem poor- have the pleasant habit of going up here [on the Acropolis] in the evening, when they have finished their work, as we go to our parks. They sit around on the ancient marbles, chatting and knitting. But they don’t spoil the place, like us tourists apparently, but rather make it human and familiar.»
Virginia Woolf was a British novelist and essayist, considered a pioneering and innovative literary artist in the 20th century. During the interwar period he was an important figure in London literary society and a member of the Bloomsbury Group.
Hans Christian Andersen | 1841
On March 15, 1841, Hans Christian Andersen left Naples, Italy on the steamship “Leonidas” for Greece and the East. From the book A Journey to Greece
«While I was staying in Athens I was visiting the Acropolis every day, rain or shine. On a visit here I celebrated my birthday, here I read the letters from home. When the reckoning returns to Greece, on the Acropolis, it will rest. Here, in this place, it is as if nature and art are asking for rest in my heart. And I longed for nothing more than for all my loved ones to be able to experience this miracle with me.»
Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish writer of fairy tales. He also wrote short stories, dramas, but above all fairy tales. All of his works exude sweet melancholy, emotion and sincerity.

Disasters and hope
The most beautiful monument of the country has clearly experienced disasters. Since the Acropolis and the Parthenon are there...they have always witnessed every moment of the long-suffering Greek history. But, despite the dangers, it is still an emblem of Greece. Below are some moments in time, which were “engraved” on the marbles.
During the 3rd century AD, the Herouls (Germans, with roots from Scandinavia) invaded Athens and set fire to the Parthenon. Its interior was completely destroyed. It was repaired by Emperor Julian a century later.
At the end of the 5th century, Parthenon was turned into a church. During the Frankish reign, it became a Catholic church with a bell tower. In the platform, you can still see holes that the Franks had dug to play a traditional ball game.
In 1687 (Veneto-Turkish war) the Venetian admiral Morosini besieged the Acropolis, shelling it for four days from the hill of the Muses. A shell destroyed the Parthenon. Since then, it was deserted, until the Ottomans built a mosque again.
On October 14, 1852, a storm and two earthquakes hit Athens. Then, one column of the temple of Olympian Zeus collapsed. In addition, the mosque that the Ottomans had built on the Parthenon also fell. Many anti-Othonian Athenians spread the premonition that it was a sign from God against Bavarian rule.
In 1458, the Acropolis was occupied by the Ottomans and the Parthenon was turned into a mosque, with the name Ismaidi (House of Prayers) or Castle Mosque.

The walk around the Acropolis is one of the favorites of the Athenians, whether those who live in the center or those who live in the suburbs. Especially on weekends, the neighborhoods around the Acropolis are filled with visitors.
Couples on their first date always choose the Acropolis for a romantic urban walk. How many first kisses have taken place in Anafiotika, on the rocks or even in the Observatory?
The new Acropolis Museum is a mustsee after climbing the Parthenon.
Details for locals and visitors Nowadays… Once upon a time…
In the area of the Theater of Dionysos, it was - until the middle of the 19th century - where adulteresses were paraded: women were put upside down on a donkey and the children followed with disapproval.
Typical types of old Athens lived in Plaka. The most famous is the “barba-Yiannis Kanatas”. He was a real person and lived on Hypereidou Street. He went around Athens on a donkey, selling jugs. He disappeared mysteriously, causing an orgy of rumours.
On the eastern slope of the Acropolis, there was the sanctuary of Aglavros, dedicated to Aglavros, who fell from the Acropolis to save it from a siege. There, Athenian teenagers took an oath of patriotism as soon as they turned 18.

Landscaping around the Acropolis
Dimitris Pikionis: Despite the reactions of other architects of the time, he remained in history.
Source: www.architectural-review.com
Born in 1887, Pikionis trained as a civil engineer at Athens Polytechnic School between 1904 and 1908, before moving to Munich to study painting. After that he relocated to Paris for three years, continuing his studies in fine art. His only apprenticeship in architectural practice consisted of some months in the office of Jules-Léon Chifflot; Pikionis himself noted that he was largely self-taught. He returned to Athens in 1912, where his architectural career began. He started teaching in Athens Polytechnic School till 1958, when he was retired. Each of Pikionis’s buildings is an experiment in what constitutes a place: there is no simplistic borrowing of the ‘local vernacular’. There is always transposition, tension, and risk – an unsettling.
Pikionis completed the project for which he is now internationally celebrated: the landscaping around the Acropolis of Athens, encompassing the ancient Filopappou Hill. Pikionis was invited to join a commission overseeing improvements to the routes around the archaeological site in 1951 by Konstantinos Karamanlis. Writing to Karamanlis, Pikionis insisted that such a project demanded to be understood as a “work of art”; predetermined forms and prevailing architectural modes could not be directly applied. The utmost attention to detail would be required: in fact, he argued, the architect would have to belong to this work only.
Pikionis became responsible for positioning each and every stone of the paths over an area of 80,000m2. Aided by close collaborators, including former students, and with a workforce of up to ninety, he devoted years of direct supervision to the project’s realisation. In an extraordinary act, Pikionis assembled the paths out of found and salvaged materials: rocks from the site combined with ancient fragments, but also the remnants of
buildings, formed the landscape inherited by Athenians growing up in the 1980s and ’90s.
Here lies perhaps the greatest provocation of this work: Pikionis laid draining boards, pieces of pipe and fragments of pavement below the rock that ancient Athenians held sacred. These mundane items originated in the expansion of Athens led by architects from Germany and Denmark, pursuing their own idea of Greece, adding to the charge of Pikionis’s project: what Peter Smithson described as “a story meant to confuse time, not to consolidate it”.
In addition to the paths, the church of Agios Dimitrios, at the base of Filopappou, was wrapped in an elaborate incrustation of spolia – some found, some invented – and a timber portico, forming a loose courtyard with a timber propylon and café pavilion. The architecture’s ambivalent balancing of influences and times lends it a chimeric quality: it is impossible to say which
sleeping, or subconscious. Pikionis applied radial grids of sight lines and arcs which purported to explain the secret harmony of irregular, nonorthogonal ancient Greek planning. However, Pikionis’s drawings reveal a further ambivalence: most of the project is not determined on paper, only evoked. It is not primarily visual but topographic, a constellation of locales whose cumulative order unfolds incrementally through direct experience. On site, the pieces were placed in discussion with craftspeople, in a way that evokes the ancient notion of “Kairos” – the opportune moment, time understood not as a linear progression but instead as a kind of confluence.
Athens in eternity
From 1954 to 1957, Pikionis was to fix the image of Athens by giving it an identity based on its authentic identity. When Athenians and visitors think of the city, the image of Pikionis’ «walk» certainly comes to mind.

A characteristic image of the city of Athens is that of Acropolis from above. We chose to show you a night shot. This photo was taken four years ago. Not much has changed. Parthenon is always illuminated at night, like a lighthouse at the entrance of the ports. Around its foothills, the whole city has been built. Starting from a temple that has existed for thousands of years in the same place, an unsurpassed city that balances between East and West, was created. IERA ODOS*: an ancient modern road
It is an ancient road which has not stopped being directly connected to the life of the Athenians for 2,500 years. People and the road move forward together!
Iera Odos is the oldest road in Greece and a well-known place of religious worship. For 2,500 years it remained the only national road that connected Athens with Northern Greece, Epirus, and the Peloponnese. The construction of the road with infrastructure and asphalt took place in 1927 and since then very little changes have taken place.
The ancient Iera Odos was 22 kilometers long and it also started from Kerameikos and specifically from the Holy Gate. In its largest part, it followed the course of today’s Iera Odos, crossing the area between Mount Aegaleo and Mount Poikilos, ending at the
Sanctuary of Demetra in Elefsina. Based on historical evidence, it is considered that the residents of Athens crossed this course for the first time during the Late Hellenic period (1600-1100 BC) to approach the settlement of Elefsina. Later, the ancient Iera Odos played an important role in the worship of the goddess Demetra on the site of Elefsis, which dates to around 11th century BC until it was officially established as an institution in the 8th century BC.
Today, it is a street where a lot of clubs and bars, theaters and art spaces, but also car repair shops and crafts are gathered making a strong commercial activity. In Iera Odos there is also the verdant Agricultural University with its gardens and farms.
AREAS ON EITHER SIDE: KERAMEIKOS, ELAIONAS, EGALEO, AG. VARVARA, HAIDARI
IERA ODOS STARTS FROM THE AREA OF KERAMEIKOS, SPECIFICALLY PANAGI TSALDARI STREET (KNOWN AS PIRAEUS STREET) AND ENDS AT ATHENS AVENUE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF CHAIDARI
LENGTH TODAY: 7.8 KM

Gazi (which in English means «gas») owes its name to the Gas Light Factory, which was founded in 1857 by a French company and started its operation in 1862. In the period 1890-1920 the factory was expanded to cover both the lighting of the city and the domestic or industrial use; a fact connected with the holding of the Olympic Games of 1896. The gradual abandonment of gas as a means of lighting, led the factory to decline. So in 1983 its operation stopped. It was classified as an important industrial monument.
Before named Gazi, the area formed at the end of the 19th century on the west side of the Gas Light Factory and between Piraeus and Konstantinoupoleos Streets, was called Gazohori (in English the exact translation is Gas village). It was a degraded working-class neighborhood with slums and difficult living conditions. In the early 20th century, brick houses were built to house the factory workers.
VOTANIKOS
The Agricultural University, located in Votanikos, preserves what remains of the famous ancient olive tree, the so-called «of Pericles» or «of Plato», which was originally located on Iera Odos. Many years ago, coachmen drove the foreign visitors to see this olive tree as a sightseeing. In the 1970s or 1980s, a truck or bus (opinions differ) ran over the tree and destroyed it, and that’s why it was moved to the Agricultural University.
The EVGA factory, located in Votanikos, was founded in 1934 and was the first dairy industry in Greece. In 1936, the factory released ice-cream cones, sticks and cups in Athens. It is worth mentioning that the ice-cream stick is a Greek patent.

explore ATHENS KERAMEIKOS METAXOURGHIO
The name Metaxourgio prevailed from the middle of the 19th century, due to the Silk Factory that was established there in 1854, at the junction of today’s Millerou and Megalou Alexandrou Streets.
The archaeological site of Kerameikos, from which the area took its name, owed in turn its name to the pottery workshops that were located on the banks of the Iridanos (ancient river of Athens), or, according to a legend, to the hero Keramos, son of ancient god Dionysus and Ariadne, and patron of potters.
Metaxourgio was famous for its nightly serenades, but it also played a leading role in the Athenian carnival, which started from here. Nowadays, the carnival of Metaxourgio is still famous, gathering crowds of people on the streets of the area every February.
Metaxourgio was also known for its coffeehouses (kafenia), especially identified with political confrontations, a familiar situation for Greece until today.

#1 The people

The Athenians are very friendly and communicative. But there are always the astute ones. When using public transport, when you are walking on busy roads or in narrow streets at night, take care of your personal belongings. Most businesses, like us, give you the ability to pay by card. But since Athenians are quite used to dealing with cash, it’s a good idea to always have some with you.
#3 Uphill and Downhill
Athens has many “ups” and “downs”, as well as long routes. To enjoy your ride, you can leave all heavy items in the Lockers and pick them up at the end of it or when you go to the suburbs.
#4 Speeders
#5 Secrets of Athens
It’s a good idea not to leave expensive items on tables during lunch or dinner, as someone speeding by, might steal them. Be careful in this case too. Discover even the most hidden corners of Athens because they are the most beautiful. Online, you will find many local guides who organize walks or guided tours of special places and even in English. In any case, ask a local who will surely be happy to give you tips on the city’s most secret walks.

THE BEER STORY
Beer is one of the most outgoing drinks. People clink their beer mugs together and chitchat goes crazy. However, beer had been a bit misunderstood in Greece, as it was treated like a soft drink. Mr Fotis Anastasiou put the beer in the centre of his attention and decided to set up a small beer workshop in the northern suburbs of Athens. One of the few Greek microbreweries and the unique brewery in Athens was born.
THE SETTLEMENT
Fresh, tasty beer is made with love and passion in the backyard of the Anastasiou brewery shop, so we can taste homemade Greek beer directly after the production. IF YOU ARE
a good-looking male walking around the street or the beach and you hear “What a gomenos!” then you must know that someone is flirting with you. The storyline: A hairspray from Argentina called “gomina” was introduced to Greece in 1935. The brand’s name comes from “gomma”, the aromatic gum used in cosmetics. The name of this hairspray, which was preferred by actors and actresses, evolved from “gomina” to “gomenos” used for men and “gomena” used to describe a beautiful, loveable woman.

gh gomenos
A COMPOUND word made up of the word “hara” which means joy, and “lipi”, which means sorrow. It is as difficult to verbalize it in one single word, as it is difficult to describe exactly this emotion itself. We could explain it as a joyful sorrow, or by telling “feeling sappy” (sad and happy). Harmolipi not only eases the sad memories, but brings softness, so that a person gains more wisdom and becomes more sensible.

THE BIG flying insect, known as cicada, fills the air with its longlasting song every summer. The jijiki is referred in Greek mythology in the legend of Tithonus, the prince of Troy. Eos, the goddess of the dawn, fell in love with Tithonus, so she asked Zeus to make her lover immortal. However, she forgot to ask for eternal youth, so Tithonus grew older and withered. The other Greek gods were pity of him, so they transformed him into a wrinkled insect that talks incessantly, the cicada.

usual element of traditional Greek houses, especially in the countryside. You can usually see the orangey-brown roof tiles in the mainland of Greece. Tiles are considered a Greek invention, as the Greeks used to use thin and slightly curved ceramic plates on their roofs. The first tiles for covering roofs date back to the 3rd millennium BC and were discovered in the pre-Hellenic “House of Tiles” on the north-eastern coast of the Peloponnese.

IT’S DIFFICULT to translate “mpougatsa” in a single English word. It is a cream pie made with phyllo pastry and usually containing semolina custard, but also sometimes cheese or mincemeat. History claims that ancients Greeks used to make pies with every kind of filing. As time went by, mpougatsa stayed popular in Constantinoupolis and Smyrna. After the destruction of Smyrna and the exchange of the Greek-Turkish population, mpougatsa became extremely popular in north Greece and especially in Thessaloniki.

DO YOU FEEL
happy but also slightly sad when you think about things that happened in the past?
Now you know that this feeling has etymologically Greek roots. Nostalgia was initially used to describe the anxieties displayed by those who were fighting away from home. Specifically, it’s a Greek compound word, consisting of the Homeric word “nostos”, meaning homecoming, and “algos”, meaning sorrow or despair. Described as melancholy, the sense of nostalgia became an important trope in Romanticism.

COULD
translate tsikna as the barbeque smell. However, a lot of stories and meanings are hidden behind this smell that increases our appetite. In ancient Greece, tsikna meant the smoke and the smell from the meat sacrifices, which was made in a ritual way. Homer also describes the meaning of tsikna as a plea to the gods. Today we usually refer to tsikna every time we gather around the barbeque to have a lot of souvlaki!

However, uranos means sky and in Greek mythology you can see it written either “Uranus” or “Ouranos”, as it was the personification of the sky and one of the Greek primordial gods. Now we know that uranos isn’t a god, but we always admire its pure blue color, especially during the summer.

Greek Slang*
*Or how to surreally swear in Greek
If using obscene words isn’t your casual style of expression, then you must reconsider, as Greeks are acclimatized to vulgarism. Don’t worry that someone will gravely get offended, most of the expressions below are just for kicks-and-giggles!
malakopίtouras
We’re sure that you’ve already heard the word “malákas” and that’s not always an insult. In our slang language “malákas” is often used among friends. However, “malakopίtouras” is a compound word formed by joining “malákas” and “pitouro” (which means bran!), used for a person that is a very big assh*le. Expression: “Ma ti malakopίtouras pou einai aftos re” that means “What an asshole he is!”.
parta
A phrase that is either an insult or a joke, depending on its context. So, it is used as a joke between friends, but it’s an insult if you don’t know the person to whom you refer. It is usually accompanied by a gesture: we use one or two hands with the fingers wide open, so that the others can see our palm. This gesture is called “mountza” and we’re really used to it!
sahlamara
The origin of this word is divisive. Perhaps it comes from a Turkish word that meant “soft, flabby”, or from the Greek adjective “sahlos”, which also means soft and is used when referring to meat. Such kinds of meats were probably of an unreliable quality, as the word “sahlamára” is today used for every type of nonsense or whatever you don’t like!
mas ta kanes tsourekia
Expression used when someone irritates and bothers us with what he does or what he says. Tsourekia are literally sweet bread made usually in Easter. Just as the tsoureki dough expands after being baked in the oven, so do our nerves (always figuratively speaking!) when someone bothers us.
kavladίzo
A new verb for flirting that can be used for a not serious first meeting, just some small talk that could end up to a hot night! To be accurate, “kavla”, the noun that forms this verb, means “hard-on”.
tha travίxo ta mallia mou
Literally translated as: “I’ll tear my own hair out”. Expression that shows anger and despair over an affair far less important, but serious enough to cause our strong feelings.
pίso gorίlla
Using the adverb “piso” we mean “step back”. Gorilla is exactly what you read: the large ape. An expression intending to thwart any person or situation that is aggressively directed against us, like a gorilla could do!
brooklys
When the first Greek immigrants returned in the early 1900s from America to Greece, they were wealthy and well-dressed in contrast to the poor natives. They were usually called Brooklynites because they came from Brooklyn. Since then, the term prevailed to characterize anyone ostentatiously well-dressed in a way that shouts “I have money”.

< from the greek verb krazo: to shout = barker, person employed to solicit customers by calling out to passers by
A high pitched voice and a lifelong tendency for exaggeration are the distinctive qualities of this breed of urban persona. Whether you meet them at their professional capacity in front of a tavern or you make their acquaintance by chance, you will immediately recognize their characteristic manner of speaking: a lot of adjectives combined with a lot of false information, built on cheap marketing techniques from the 80s. They can convince you that anything, from their favorite local café to some miraculous vitamins for hair loss is the solution to your lifelong existential struggle. Worst of all, they tend to advertise themselves with the same passion of a retired car dealer. Take their words with a grain of salt and pretend it’s part of the audiovisual background.
The “Hellen”
(Ancient Greek: Έλλην, Hellēn, «bright») was the progenitor of the Hellenes (Έλληνες). His name is also another name for Greek.
This is usually a type of Greek that doesn’t speak foreign languages very well, but praises himself on his knowledge and devotion to all the aspects of the greek tradition. In a few words, he can describe centuries of greek history, proving without a doubt how greeks invented anything known on our planet, including space travels and chinese dumplings. According to him, his beloved country is cheated and mistreated by everyone, including politicians, immigrants, non-christians and small domestic animals. However, his beliefs can come from his deep patriotic consciousness. Skip his chatter, so you can get some useful information about the best hidden spots to visit, only known to locals.
This is the sticky type. Sticky in terms of auxiliary devices for commemorating the same smiling version of themselves in front of different backgrounds. Even when not armed with sticks, they are still dangerous. They perceive the world through the lens of a camera and their worst nightmare is running out of battery. They don’t live, they document the life around them. Unfortunately, most of the time they miss the most juicy details of real life, because they are slightly out of focus. Take care: these individuals rarely notice physical obstacles and moving objects, so be gentle and cautious. Lastly, don’t forget to photobomb their selfies at every chance. At least, that way they will have some real life snapshots on their pictures.
The pedant
That’s the type of knowledgeable traveler you encounter in front of every long and obscure historical note in the museum. They have done their research and know how everything SHOULD work. If the timetable of the archeological sites is slightly different from what is written in the tour guide, they make a point out of demonstrating it to every single person in their immediate reach. If by chance they weren’t able to visit every single landmark on their five-page list, the whole trip wouldn’t worth it. These scholarly fellows are good for getting precious historic data, so shadow them while sightseeing and then just wander off to live some real-life experiences.

You may be on vacation, but never forget those who work...
We would like to remind you that you may be enjoying your vacation, but there are also people working hard to make this vacation enjoyable. To understand how hard, there are workers who work without days off, 7 days a week, 12 or 14 hours a day, without being paid as they should be. Why? It’s hard to explain in a few lines, but as you may hear the work situation in Greece is not ideal. Therefore, fatigue and poorly paid work, combined with sun and heat, you can imagine what effects bring to the worker’s mood and body.
For everyone’s enjoyment, we suggest keeping the following in mind:
You don’t need to be impatient. Everyone will be served.
Don’t feel that because you’re paying, you must get what you ask for right away. All the others pay too.
Flirting is fine, but there should be a limit.
The tip should always be given and should be proportional to the bill.
It is not the waiter’s fault if the order is late.
All the menus are in English, so there is no need to hear the dishes orally.
Be objective in store’s social media reviews.
If a mistake is made, it is not the end of the world. It will be fixed.
If you are the last customer, hurry up. There is no need for the employees to extend their working hours.
In general, kindness never hurt anyone. On the contrary, it's often life saving.
DEAR VISITORS, WELCOME.
WE HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR STAY IN ATHENS – AND IN GREECE IN GENERAL IF YOU’RE JUST MAKING A STOPOVER BEFORE THE ISLANDS OR OTHER CITIES IN THE COUNTRY.

Awesome Athens Experiences
If you want to explore Athens as if you were a local, then the street art tours organized by Kalliopi and Thomas are exactly what you need. Living for years in the center of Athens and collaborating with Athenian and international street artists in many other projects and events, they invite us to chill with these artistic walks in the center of the city in its most hidden and non-touristic places. Street art is an integral part of the tours and gives its own information about city life.
Street art tour
TO BOOK YOUR PLACE ON THE BEST STREET ART TOUR OF ATHENS VISIT THEIR WEBSITE.
The whole process can be described as an experience since you will learn to walk and move with the steps the locals do and you will notice details that you will hardly find in a tourist guide. The real Athens is here and is waiting for you to experience it.
Athens is full of graffitiwhether they come from teenagers and adults who love to wander in the city with a spray can in hand and paint walls, or from professional muralists who take on larger murals! In any case, graffiti is a staple of the city and you’ll find it everywhere.
Like any other city, Athens has -except for tourist spots- streets, alleys, corners and places that are worth getting to know if you want to have a real experience of the city you visited. Keep your eyes and ears open to go back to your country with as many memories as you can.

Escaping from the inner city
YES, ATHENS HAS MANY THINGS TO DISCOVER, FROM THE MOST FAMOUS TO THE MOST BIZARRE. THIS DOES NOT MEAN, HOWEVER, THAT YOU CANNOT ALSO GET TO KNOW THE FAVORITE NEARBY ESCAPES OF THE ATHENIANS, JUST ONE TO TWO HOURS BY CAR FROM THE CITY CENTER OR BY SHIP FROM THE PORT OF PIREUS.
Lavrio
Within the prefecture of Attica and less than 10 minutes away from Temple of Poseidon in Sounio, Lavrio is a coastal place with a rich history and numerous archaeological sites. You reach Lavrio via the main coastal road of Athens, Poseidonos Avenue (as you drive towards Lavrio, the name changes). Lavrio is known for its mining history, which starts already from classical antiquity and reaches up to the 20th century. The remaining factory buildings and machinery make the entire town an open-air industrial museum. What is worth visiting are the cafés of the fish market, which are in the building complex of the market of Lavrio and offer excellent fish dishes.
The Mineralogical Museum and the Ceramics Museum are also two destinations not to be missed. And of course, Lavreotiki coast is full of beaches and coves that look like an island and are waiting for you to cool off!
Nafplion
Athens is the capital of Greece, while Nafplio is the capital of the prefecture of Argolis and once the capital of the entire state. A seaside, historic and beautiful city, it has been offered as a getaway for Athenians for years now. A walk in the old town of Nafplio is like a journey into the modern history of Greece. Syntagma Square is surrounded by historical buildings: the Trianon, the building of the Archaeological Museum and the National Bank, built in the interwar period, the first Parliament of the Greeks, the church of Agios Spyridon, outside of which I. Kapodistrias was murdered in 1831, and opposite the city’s only hammam. The squares and the mansions –of beautiful aesthetics and architecture – also give their own vibe to the city.
Agistri Island
Agistri (means fishhook) is a pine-covered island of Greece, specifically of the Argosaronic gulf, which belongs to the prefecture of Attica. The island has a daily ferry connection with the port of Piraeus. The duration of the trip by ferry is 1.5 hours and with the «Flying Dolphin» 55 minutes. There are many beautiful beaches on the island (Dragonera and Aponisos are standing out). For those who love hiking, Agistri is ideal for walking too. Although no archaeological excavations have been carried out, on the west coast of the island there are antiquities and remains of a prehistoric settlement submerged in the sea.
Dragonera is a crystalclear beach in Agistri that combines pebbles and forest. At the beach bar, you will find choices for food, handmade unique cocktails, lounge music and a more party mood on Saturdays. If you want to isolate, you can discover the small peaceful creeks too. Relax enjoying the best sunset of Argosaronicos!

Traditional Tavern Metaxou
Experience the greek hospitality and flavors like nowhere else
The name “Metaxou”
Dina Metaxou was the name of the old owner of the building, when it was still a grocery store. So, the current owners decided, as a tribute to her, to name their tavern with her surname.
The place
In a stone-built building of the Interwar period, with the “mystical” hall in earthy colors, the verdant yard and the century-old mulberry tree in its center, as well as the beautiful pedestrian street, Metaxou offers an experience that combines the atmosphere of old Athens with modern urban details.
The music
Every night and on Sunday afternoon at Metaxou you will wander around many different musical paths with a different group each day. Folk, rebetika and traditional music meet in the courtyard and fill your heart with Greek sounds. Every Wednesday you can also enjoy “kantada” (Greek lovesongs like serenades) that will add a romantic dimension to your night.
The cuisine
At Metaxou you can make a cool midday stop from your walk in Athens to enjoy traditional, well-cooked dishes and pies. Do it like the locals by pairing your food with the house wine that suits you. In addition to the à la carte menu, there are also daily specials; don’t hesitate to ask the staff for information and recommendations.
