I’m thrilled to announce two new, unique programs. MAG Central, an artifact lending library, is designed to bring hands-on histtory to school children and youth groups in the region.

programs provide children the opportunity to develop a better understanding and appreciation of different cultures in new and creative ways.

We’ve also launched a full fall series of MAG Day Camps. Take a look at the dates and activities then reserve a spot for your children to spend a ‘day at the museum’.

Lending Library Launched in September!

Whether visiting the museum, or bringing the museum to the classroom, the MAG has created an alternate and effective resource for schools and youth groups to get their “hands on history�.

The collections stored at the MAG are historically relevant to Red Deer and surrounding area.

The rich stories unraveled from these artefacts provide a tangible connection to our past. However, over forty years of collecting has put a strain on the available storage space.

To ensure that the existing space will sustain future collecting, the MAG has developed a three-year Collections Reorganization Plan.

The goal is to development more functional storage and work areas so that artefacts are accessible to staff, researchers, and interested individuals.

The first phase of the project includes an inventory, reorganization, and consolidation of objects which will then be packed securely and transported to a temporary off-site location.

New storage units will be installed to utilize existing space to its maximum efficiency. Electronic records will be updated and data made available to the public on-line.

Meet Carlene LaRue

MAGnificent Saturdays artist A move to Hinton Alberta years ago rekindled Carlene’s love of visual art. Surrounded by the natural landscape, she captured its beauty through photography and painting.

After moving to Sylvan Lake, Carlene took painting and photography classes at Red Deer College. To her surprise she fell in love with the mediums of ceramics and sculpture.

Dinosaurs always held her imagination as a child. Carlene brings her clay forms to life, incorporating these giant beasts (with some additions…), roaming the pre-history landscapes of Alberta. Her more recent works are robotic dinosaurs, which also function as ‘chia pets’, growing moss and greenery.

The stories behind the objects Red Deer and the Great War - 1914 Let’s Go Boys!

This year we mark the 100th Anniversary of start of the Canada’s involvement in the First World War. Great Britain declared war against Germany on August 4, 1914. The Red Deer Armories, built in 1913, saw 80 men immediately volunteer for service.

Over the next four years, the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery will explore the response, duration and profound effects the First World War had on Red Deer and Central Alberta citizens. The museum will use its collections and the stories of soldiers and families who lived in or near Red Deer.

Julian Sharman - Veteran Profile Julian Sharman arrived in Alberta from England in 1901. He was a loyal supporter of the Agricultural Society and its fairs and became widely known as the breeder of Jersey dairy cattle, especially in developing the famous cow – Rosalind of Old Basing. Sharman joined the 187th Battalion organized in Red Deer. When he returned home he worked on the Committee for the Soldiers Memorial which built the cenotaph.

In July the MAG hosted a team building session for the Zone 4 football team (Parkland Region), participating at the Alberta Summer Games (Airdrie, July 24-28).

The boys painted team banners, consumed ice cream sundaes, enjoyed time in the galleries, then watched a football movie in the BMO Capitol Theatre.

What do the Koi say?

Do you believe in Dragons? How about hard work?

An ancient Chinese legend about the “Leaping Carp” (koi translated means carp in Chinese) comes from “The Xin Family’s Three Accompanying Stories” (辛氏三秦记).

It states, “On the Yellow River, in Shanxi province, there are two cliffs that frame the river that the locals call ‘The Dragon Gate’. Here, if a carp leaps high enough, it will be magically transformed into a dragon.” The story, contracted into a four-character proverb, “鱼跃龙门” (yúyuèlóngmén), means, “Those who try hard will be rewarded with unimaginable benefits, regardless of how humble their origins”.
