Background Smoking is a food processing technique that can extend the shelf-life of meat and its unique richness adds a special smoked flavor that is always loved by people. Nowadays, when people want to have smoked food, they usually buy ready-made or use their own kitchenware to make some.
Problems However, we never know how the ready-made smoked food are made, and we don't have that much options of smoked food to choose from. In addition, we might encounter lots of problems if we want to make them by ourselves, such as mantaining the proper heat level, the amount of time needed, cleaning problems, etc. These problems make it tedious for people who enjoy smoked food.
Purpose We want to make “smoking” become a part of people's daliy lives where it is as simple as making toasts for breakfast. According to people's tastes, smoking can be made differently everyday by adding the flavor of their choice. Apart from this, when we cook smoked food, we feel consciously safer and healthier because we get to choose which ingredients to add. We can enjoy the different arrangements between food and smoking materials.

Product Design │ 15
Experiment In the beginning, in order to survey through the potential problems in smoking food, we referred to some recipes on the Internet, some food programs and conducted several experiments by ourselves, and found out lots of issues during this whole process. Later on, we visited few experts on smoking food and found that when smoking in an almost confined space, the right amount of water can absorb excessive smoke and reduce the bitterness on the food made by the smoke. After conducting lots of experiments and making proper adjustments, we came up with the final design, Smogr.
16 │ Product Design
Product Design │ 17
Idea Sketch After our brain storming, we sorted out 4 development types which were " pan with lid," " oven," " external smoke device," and " electric frying pan." Next, we surveyed related products on the market and excluded the similar ideas. Finally, we decided to choose " electric frying pan" as our design development foundation.

Prototype & Procedure testing The first generation prototype was made out of cardboard to test the size and form, and then we made the second generation prototype by foamcore board for procedure testing and form adjustment. In addition, we shot a procedure film with the second generation prototype. By demosntrating the second generation prototype to others, we got some feedback to revise.

Introduction Smogr is the kitchen appliances for city people who live without a complete kitchen but enjoy cooking by themselves. It not only can grill but also smoke. In addition, there are lots of different flavor combinations due to disposable canned smoking chips and substitutable wooden board. Smogr provides a new cooking experience which is trusted, convenient, experimental and fun.
Cleaning Our design form consists in a concise style, including round-like details and edges. We avoided right angles and slits which would rather make it uneasy to clean.

Grilling tray
Wooden board
Stand
There are patterns on the surface to avoid meat adhesions. The arc on both sides collects the extra oil when grilling. An indicative square on the left side corner indicates users to place the canned smoking chips.
Wood flavor can be integrated when users smoke food. The notches on the surface avoids excessive oil accumulating under the food. Wood flavors, such as cherry, apple wood, oak and walnut are available as an option.
Stand is combined with the wooden board by latches, so users can easily switch to the their preferable wooden board by themselves. There are rubbers under the stand to avoid scratching the grilling tray surface.
Water box
Lid
Canned smoking chips
Water can absorb excessive smoke and mitigate the bitterness when smoking. There is a mark line in it which indicates users how much water they should add inside the box.
A see through window allows users to observe the process of smoking food. On the right side, there are two little holes to regulate the pressure.
It is referenced by the capsule coffee machine. The cans can reduce the troubles on cleaning, moreover, control the amount of smoking chips which is set before experiences and tests. Canned smoking chips can reduce the risk of failure of smoking and avoid making too much smoke.
22 │ Product Design
Procedure Because Smoke Mode is made for adding flavor to food, not for heating, therefore, the food has to be fully cooked after smoking it. Thus, users can easily switch to Grill Mode to begin grilling their food.
1
Open Open canned smoking chips and put it on the marked place above the grilling tray.
2
Place Put the wooden board with stand on the grilling tray. Put food on the wooden board.
3
Water Pour water in the water box to the mark line and place it on the square groove of wooden board.
Product Design │ 23
Interface
Smoke Mode: 3 levels of smoked flavor.
Grill Mode: 5 levels of heat.
4
Smoke Put the lid on. Press the power botton. Press Smoke Mode and adjust the levels of smoked flavor. Wait.
5

Background In Taiwan, the percentage of older people increases each year. It is estimated that the Taiwanese aged society will be even more visible in 2016, and will catch up with the Japanese by 2060. Therefore, elderly care becomes more and more important. In old people's daily lives, bathing is difficult and inevitable routine due to their weak bodies and poor sense of balance. Hence, there are more and more assistive devices on the market to help the elderly or even the people with lower-limb disabilities have a bath safely. However, the caregivers in ST. MARY'S Hospital told us that there are still some problems when using the bath chair. As a result, we start our problem research, ideation, prototype and final design concept while collaborating with ST. MARY'S Hospital.
30 │ Product Design
Interview First, in order to survey thorough the potential problems in helping old people take a bath, we visited an elder care and rehabilitation center in Tainan and interviewed a experienced caregiver. Thanks to her detailed experience sharing, we learned more about elder care.
Product Design │ 31
Footbrake uneasy to use When caregivers want to set the bath chair, they have to step the brake 4 times. Moreover, it is difficult for them to step the brakes on the front wheels and avoid the bath chair slide away on sloppy ground at the same time.
Only one side to sit down Because of the fixed armrest on both sides, the elder can sit down only from the front side. It is hard for caregivers to help the elder move.
Slides down easily Because the elder's lower-limb is weak and the foam makes the seat sloppy, the elder slides down easily in the process of bathing. It may injure the caregivers when they try to catch hold of the elder.
Dangerous slit Most of the foot boards on the bath chair are not complete plane which may make the elder's toes stuck in the slit and get hurt.
Problems After the interview, we gathered some user experiences and advices from caregivers in ST. MARY'S Hospital. Then, from the existing bath chairs found on the market, we sorted out four common problems.
32 │ Product Design
Idea Sketch We all did the idea sketch, and then discussed them with the Dean of Research and Development in ST. MARY'S Hospital. Next, we picked some good ideas from everyones' sketch and combined them together to a new deisgn.

Structural modification With our " Bath Protector ver.1," we had a meeting with the boss of wheelchair manufacturer to discuss how to meet the production and processing restrictions. He suggested that we can perform a product market analysis, especially the framework of bath chairs. Besides, he said that a simple structure with less welding points is a good reference. Therefore, we began our survey on bath chair framework.

Version 2. Compared to previous version, this structure is more simple with the less welding points and the form is rather more concise.
38 │ Product Design
Version 3. We adjusted the framework slightly. The seat cushion shaft has been changed to the front side so that we can reduce a welded metal framework.
Product Design │ 39
1:5 Scale Model In order to confirm the visual and physical appearance of the model, we made a 1:5 scale model as the final test. We printed out the framework by 3D printer and made the seat cushion with PU foam. Last but not least, combine them all together.

Lean-on-me Lean-on-me is a new type of seat found on the train platforms for young commuters who are usually asked to give seats to the elderly but want to rest while waiting for the train. Because young commuters can rest by simply leaning against "Leanon-me," it fits their needs of waiting in a short time and leaving seats as fast as possible. Besides, when it is used, it means that more seats are available for passengers who really needs to sit down. In other words, it creates a more friendly relationship between passengers.

Why did we choose this topic ? The train station is full of different passengers. However, do most old hardware appliance fit passengers' needs? Taking that in consideration, we started a series of researches, including collecting data, observing the environment, and investigating through questionnaires. Finally, we chose young commuters (around 19~30 years old) as our target users. The reason behind why we decided to target young commuters is because they frequently pass in and out of the train stations. In addition, we hope passengers can get along well with each other by changing young passengers' habits of choosing their seats.

A new concept of seats Leaning against something is a posture that helps longstanding people change their center of body weight and ease sore muscles. While observing the enviroment around the train station, we found out that passengers without seats waiting for the train usually choose to lean against the balustrade or a wall for a short rest. To sum up, we decided to bring the concept of leaning against something into our design, trying to solve young commuters’ problems in a way different from traditional seats.

Advantages of Lean-on-me Save space / Both the occupied area of " Lean-on-me" and the users' sphere of activities are smaller.
Leave seats faster / It fits commuters’ needs of waiting for the train in a short time and leaving seats as fast as possible.
Distinguish needs / Young people with better fitness can choose using " Lean-on-me" and leave seats for passengers who need to sit down.

Form & Sketch When Lean-on-me is set, it doesn’t need to remove the original seats on the platform. Therefore, Lean-on-me should have the same form rule with chairs already existing in order to increase the sense of unity. For this reason we took current station seats for reference and chose the bright and lively color connected to young passengers when sketching .

Test & Model After series of sketch discussion, we set the form of Lean-on-me. Then came the human factors size testing. Thinking about the user’s height, we referred average height of both young male and female in Taiwan (around 19~30 years old), that is, 172.4cm and 159.7cm. Hence, we set two sizes. As the curved surface that hips touched, we found all height range testers to test the conformance in curve, width, and slope by the experimental model. Then we modified it to the final model.

Nap Keeper is the new type of desk and chair for Tawanese elementary school students who are asked to take a nap after lunch for a while everyday. To improve the quality of nap, the seatback extends a plane with a pocket where a coat can be put as a pillow. As a result, students don't have to take a nap with face on the desk, which is harmful for thier eyes, spine, nerve and so on. Besides, Nap Keeper also solves some problems from existing desks and chairs.

Background In Taiwan, most of the teachers at the elementary school required students to take a nap after lunch for about 30 minutes. For most the the times, students takes a nap with faces down towards the desks. However, doctors said that napping on desks with faces down is harmful for our eyes, spine, nerve and so on.
Context How can I ensure that every elementary school students can use the product? >>> Schools buy it. What product do schools have to provide for students now? >>> Desks and chairs. Research In order to reach the second goal, solve the problems from existing desks and chairs, I had a further investgation and found out 6 existing problems in the desks and chairs which are used even nowadays.
During six years in the elementary school, students grow taller and taller; however, the height of desks and chairs can not be adjusted accordingly. The only solution is to change to another

set of desks and chairs.
Maintenance & Management Because of the material (wood) and structure, the desk and chair needs to be repaired through time.
Doodle on the desk Some students like to doodle (even carving at times) on desks as monumental marks or even out of boredom. However, it will eventually bring trouble to the next user.

desks.
Because of the material (wood) and

structure, the desk and chair needs to be repaired through time.
Space for schoolbag Students are used to hanging their schoolbags on the side or placing them behind their chairs, causing two main issues: one, bags will make walkways crowded and two, make their seating area smaller and smaller.
