Progress;

look how far we've come!

12 issues, 3 years, 10,000+ fans and followers, 1m+ reads, and a multitude of opinions later we find ourselves in the topic of "progress".

Irresistibly we consider the thrill of new heights (p08), the fruits of our artistic endeavours (p36), and the ascension achieved through economic strength (p31), but progress, we acknowledge, is a winding and complicated path. What of the erosion of local trade by the growth of multinational corporations (p35), the often tumultuous nature of depression (p34), or the illusions conjured by duplicitous politicians (p27)?

To one woman progress can be whatever you deem it (p44), to another it's the perception of the collective (p13). In either situation we can only claim that we are where we are; and look how far we've come! Feminism is on its 4th wave, a once 'terrorist' is deified posthumously and a new economic power emerges from the East. Whilst we may believe that most of this was predictable, in retrospect, few of us can testify to the certainty of where we'll be 10, 15 or 20 years from now.

Personally, I'm still waiting for the flying cars, hover skateboards and detectives that can predict crime before it's even happened...

72M spoke to Dr. Elizabeth Austin PhD about The Perlan Mission,

an aeronautical exploration aiming to push the frontiers of flight by soaring into near space. Involving meteorological research to investigate the impact of stratospheric waves on global weather patterns, climate and atmospheric chemistry, it hopes to inspire future generations to pursue careers in math, science and research.

T

he Perlan 2 Aircraft is set to break all wing borne flight records and most likely end up in the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. The record aimed for is 90,000 feet (Perlan 3 will be to 100,000 feet), but anything initially above the Perlan 1 world record of 50,671 feet will set a new world record.

The specific atmospheric research interests of the project are to explore, and record, atmospheric phenomena important for weather models using a high altitude glider to gather data on, and assist our understanding of:

-Stratospheric mountain waves (SMW).

-The structure of breaking stratospheric waves.

-Microphysics of lenticular (wave) clouds and impacts on climate models.

-Changes in the structure of tropopause during SMW activity.

-Interactions between the Polar Vortex, the tropopause, and SMW’s.

-The mass exchange between the troposphere and stratosphere which enhances understanding of long term climate.

-Validation of theoretical methods for the prediction of wave breaking and the resulting extreme turbulence that mixes the stratosphere.

- Quantification of mixing in the stratosphere due to breaking waves.

-SMW impact on ozone levels.

-Other meteorological and scientific measurements of interest.

The education mission aims to create hands on experiences for young people in the areas of aerospace materials testing and fabrication of flight testing, life support systems, mission communications, and research on how stratospheric mountain waves help deplete ozone and impact the planet’s climate.

After the record is set Phase 3 of the project is to either modify the glider or build a new one that will be able to reach an altitude of 100,000 feet.

equivalent to the surface pressure on Mars and the flying conditions the Perlan will experience near or at 100,000 feet are similar to the conditions on Mars.

Women and S.T.E.M "I think there has been a lot of progress in terms of more girls and women becoming interested in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The issue still seems to be with them remaining in these fields over time. Many women still sense a “glass ceiling”, the juggling of family and career, and feeling the “odd one out” with regard to the “good ole boys clubs”.

Overall I feel the stigma of being a woman in STEM is declining. The biological sciences are are abundant with women, yet there remains a gender imbalance in areas such as physics and mathematics.

It is through seeing role model women in these fields that most girls and women find inspiration. These include women as professors, leaders of companies, and women in influential roles at high schools, colleges, and universities, actively implementing STEM and women’s involvement.

I have to add one caveat to focusing just on STEM; I do not want to push aside the tremendous importance of music, the arts and how important they are in producing the “best” scientists, engineers and mathematicians. Music and the arts are a huge factor in the success of our young scientists, engineers and mathematicians and must not be relegated financially and socially.

The most exciting outcome for me to be gained from flying higher than any other wing borne aircraft is discovering many of the unknown, or poorly understood, atmospheric processes; many of which are listed above. In addition, with the education component of the project, where students are able to design their own experiments to be conducted through Perlan, should only a few of these individuals go on to become scientists, that will be the greatest achievement of the project.

Former, and first black, President of South Africa he was once referred to, by mainstream media, conservative politicians, and supporters of Apartheid, as “a communist” and “a terrorist”.

A

s a young, black, South African who opposed the Apartheid regime his position within the South African Communist Party (SACP) and his actions with the Umkhonto We Sizwe led to his persecution and inevitable imprisonment. The 27 years he served on Robben Island, in Pollsmoor Prison, and in Victor Verster Prison, then his reaction after his release have come to define how the world perceives his character; an indomitable spirit, a beautiful mind and a mighty heart.

The advancement of time has vindicated this once ‘terrorist’. History has validated his activism and the ‘collective’ has seemingly assimilated his rhetoric.

Still, there are detractors and this too is a necessary part of the chaos of progress.

Progress is not clean, linear, or without complexity. Mandela fought for the end of a regime he felt oppressed, disadvantaged, and damaged a component of the society he belonged to. For a large part of this fight many believed he was wrong; in his politics and in his actions. If we strip away romantic notions of what we consider right or wrong, personal politics and cultural influences we find that there have been and there still are many like him; Ernesto “Che” Guevara, Robert Mugabe, Fidel Castro, Sojourner Truth, Karl Marx, Maximilien Robespierre, Emiliano Zapata… to name a very few and only time, and the manner in which the human ‘collective’ progresses, will define those we see as our heroes from those we perceive as our villains.

Then we have every celebrity, or public figure, that ‘outs’ themselves as LGBTI. As trivial, or unnecessary, as this may seem to some, this readiness to identify oneself with a group of people that are still openly demonised strengthens the battle against those perpetuating the demonization.

October 9th 2012 introduced the world, at

large, to Malala Yousafzai. Although recognised as a formidable force in the fight against sexism Malala’s postion as a Muslim female, who chooses to wear a Hijab, casts her as one of the religiously oppressed that protest groups like ‘FEMEN’ claim to fight with, and for.

Their ‘bare breasts’ protests have courted controversy, caused offence and resulted in resentment from feminists who feel that feminism has more faces than the usual [WASPy] suspects.

Herein lays the biggest conflict of the latest waves of feminism; intersectionality. A term coined

by Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw to describe the intersections between multiple systems of discrimination like race, class, religion, gender, and sexuality.

It encapsulates the complexity of oppression and the multiplicity of the oppressed. Social media has paved the way for the so called 4th wave of feminism wherein feminists, or those who identify with feminism but fall short of labelling themselves as such, feel able to congregate and ‘call out’ sexist, and misogynistic behaviour.

Amongst these voices emerged #SolidarityIsForWhiteWomen.

By the end of 2010 China became the world’s second biggest economy, overtaking Japan, with predictions that it will topple the USA as the biggest world economy by 2020.

Cue the baying of Western woe as cries of ‘the communists are coming’ foul the air. Fears that a world where China is the superpower may lead to an end of liberal freedoms are often followed by assertions that its military power is ‘puny’, anyway. Adding to this is the ease at which Western media portrays China’s burgeoning relationship with Africa as ‘new colonialism’ despite a Chinese history absent of active colonialism and Western history carved from it.

The nervousness is unsurprising. The East-

West dichotomy has existed for centuries and the differences that we have assigned to these descriptors of peoples have led to suspicion and the ‘otherisation’ of those who do not seem like us. Simplistic beliefs that Easterners 16

are 'Commies' and Westerners are Capitalists ignores, once again, the complexity of how the world has progressed and the dynamic nature of life on Earth. These unfounded fears also imply that we can only live in a unipolar world where one leader rules them all and this, in part, suggests that with America as the current superpower, we must feel that we already do.

The space that we find ourselves in at this point in time is but a step in this journey of human evolution that started a thousand miles before us, and will continue for a thousand more when we are no longer part of the collective that passes judgement on what is, or is not, progress. Yet for all those who sincerely believe in moving the human race closer to a state of being that is holistic, benevolent and considerate we must commit ourselves to action, any action however small. We do not know where our heroes will rise from, nor can we predict what our villains will teach us about the origins of malevolent deeds, but we can live to our fullest potential, galvanize those we meet to do the same and commit to progress, however difficult, however slow.

tart by applying your regular foundation and conceal any blemishes. This acts as a base.

To highlight, using a sponge or a small concealer brush, apply a foundation or concealer 2 shades, and noticeably lighter, than your skin tone under your eyes. Apply a finger-widths amount from the outer edge of your eye, underneath your eye and widening to cover the outer edge of your nose. Always ensure it's even on both sides. Also apply to the bridge of your nose, your cupids bow, center of your forehead, middle of your bottom lip and under the arch of your brows.

To contour; I love using Bobbi Brown foundation stick in Chestnut or Expresso, £28. Using a contour brush, or the Stick foundation itself, apply at the outer edges of your forehead, the hollow between your cheekbones and jawline drawing it to the top of your ears, underneath your jawline and a thin line between the highlighted areas of your nose.

Taking a fluffy brush or clean Sponge, I'm a huge fan of the Beauty Blender Sponge (from £16), blend in between the highlight and contour shades. Take your time doing this as no harsh lines should show.

After blending set the contour shade with a powder product, This can be a Dark brown eyeshadow or a dark bronzer Like Iman sheer finish bronzer in Clay from £19.99 Set the highlighter with a setting powder, I love Ben Nye Luxury powder in Banana and Topaz from £7.50.

For that added oomph; using a shimmering highlighter, Dior Poudrier Perfumed Illuminating powder £49, and a fluffy brush, dust this amazing product on top of your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, under the arch of your brows and over your cupids bow.

y the time you read this one of the following may, or may noy, have happened; you're still keeping your new year's resolutions and are justifiably proud of yourself, or you have already forgotten you made any and go on with your life in the same ol' manner.

Enjoy your smokes and chocolate while you can.

New Year's resolutions are a natural process of our subconscious: we admit that every new year comes with change, and inevitably with progress. From our very essence, we strive for perfection, we aim to become better, healthier, nicer.

Now, technology is an indivisible part of progress and it is often accused to have disconnected us from the world around us.

Let me disagree with that: We are the ones who prefer, out of convenience, boredom or bad time management to rather tweet than pick up the phone and talk or even meet face to face with our best friend. We are the ones who feel oh-so-sociable having 2,148 Facebook friends and at the same time forget all about the 4 people we‘ve known since Kindergarten [and destroyed each others sand castles at the playground].

My challenges involve having the right workspace, running a business premises, sifting and filtering which network events to attend, aligning with the right partners to develop an idea, recruiting competence and getting the right business marketing and advertising support. This last aspect can be a huge problem for small businesses and they can easily fall prey to unscrupulous agents whose only interest is in securing an account, and not the right option to raise the profile of that business within the right market.

I have tackled my challenges with the help of prayer, patience, wise counsel, objectivity, decisiveness and by executing actions with confidence.

As if to represent some kind of ‘order’ and progress to be better than the one created by nature a contingent have always, and continue, to hint at ‘change’ while standing firmly for the means that make the many beholden to an incompetent, psychopathic and brutal few.

Societies and civilizations that have been brought about over the last 10,000 years are illusory constructs, and are not, as these faux leaderships would have you believe, anything to do with cityscapes or engineering marvels. In short, technology is not progress, not in and of itself. It is our intent manifested with and through technology that concludes mass changes. You will no doubt already be aware that guns don’t kill people. People kill people.

As we appear then to ‘progress’, are we not also becoming more disconnected, more dependent and less autonomous and even more insane? Does the man who spends years climbing a corporate ladder toward the mirage of greater financial rewards become autonomous, and free, or moribund and institutionalized?

In nature it is death to exert energy unnecessarily in pursuit of excessive resources that the organism cannot make use of.

The risk to expending too much, and failing to achieve an energy source of food or water, is the very knife’s edge of life. In our ‘progressed’ world, so advanced from the primitivisms of animals and plants, what infection to this experience of authentic life are represented by the symptoms of obesity, money market speculation,

imperialist invasions, property ‘development’, mono-agricultures, geo-engineering or cancer? For diseases can also be said to progress both in scope and severity.

Let’s unveil another illusion; evolution is also not progression.

If evolutionary theory, micro or macro, is to be considered in any serious measure then it would be clear that it must be an unfettered, one might say ‘free’ mechanism.

Advocates of the universe without consciousness have unhinged their wagons from the galloping colts of order bound for any particular way point, for this would imply some design or plan. So by association, when the mobsters of politics and big business speak of progress as in some way ‘natural’, and at the vanguard of human ‘evolution’, are they speaking from a place of empirical evidence? Or is it more likely that they spin and weave webs of lies and deceit to maintain the very imbalance that pours attention, energy and therefore money, perpetually towards their own pockets.

And what of language itself as the basis for progressing an illusion that serves the deceitful, and the cultural Marxism that is attempting to be grown through the infantilism of ‘political correctness’? When the meanings of words are deliberately inverted, or misleading, metaphorical phrases are concocted in ‘think tanks’, they first absolve their propagators of legal liabilities, of moral comeuppance, whilst at the same time unleashing a behemoth of ignorance and prejudice. For an illusion can never progress, only be maintained, and it requires the spelling to be recast at intervals in order to do so.

Such constructs as; haters, to mean critics, trolls; the inconsiderate, rendition; kidnapping, collateral damage; the killing of women

and children, living impaired; dead, doubtless arrived at for fear that you would offend any corpse or the dead in general, all mean essentially nothing but introduce a sorcery of infinite fracture and division along whose borders prejudices can be aligned. Such prejudices can then be formed behind figureheads for particular interest groups, be they religious, national, political, social, racial, sexual, and by this mechanism are tribes, even cults born. Is this progress or regress?

Further, we are each a Human Being, not a Human Progressing, so how much of our time do we spend learning to simply be ourselves in contrast to that spent worshipping someone else?

The Ancient Egyptians depicted the Gods Thoth and Anubis in arbitration over the 'weighing of the heart' ceremony. They can be seen beside scales upon which is placed the heart, to symbolise the soul against a feather.

Interpretations of this image might include ideas of mass, purity or even ‘lightness’; as in being enlightened or unburdened, but my personal aspect includes an understanding of the very scales that are used to measure the soul.

Associated only with weights and measures understanding will go only as far as the physical plane, for it is only here where the phenomena of weight exists. But if you consider the idea of scale to include the relative, as a bacterium is to a baboon or as a quark is to a quasar, then you will understand the many dimensions within which the soul must find balance.

Ultimately then, if there is any kind of genuine progress to be attained in life can it be within a single dimension or only when graduating from one to the next?

If a magician performs for our entertainment his skill lies not in the hand that holds the coloured silk, but in the simultaneous unseen movements of his other. So it occurs to The A lex Experience that common concepts of progress are offered as diversions in order to oppress.

I

n 2012, Serbia went through another recession and the economy contracted by 1.7%. High export growth softened the effects of depressed domestic demand and led to a mild and uneven recovery in the first half of 2013.

According to the Statistical Office, in the first quarter of this year, industrial production began to recover and grew by 5.2 percent. Serbian exports grew by 22 percent compared to the same period last year.

High growth was achieved in the production of petroleum, tobaccos, textiles, and furniture as well as the automotive, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Factors favorable to Serbia's economic growth include a strategic location and a relatively inexpensive and skilled labor force which encourages Russia to invest over 5bn more euros in the Serbian economy to back new projects. Mutual interests lie in the energy and production sectors, as well as the social sphere. Russia and Serbia are planning to implement several ambitious projects in the next three years, first of all, in the Serbian energy sector. Lubricant refining will be started at the Novi Sad oil refinery after a reconstruction.

The Pancevo refinery will be revamped as well. It will be provided with the new technology of advanced oil and gas processing. Russian investment in the reconstruction of the plants will reach 1.5bln euros.

The Fiat company has recognized Serbia as one of the best investment destinations, but it is necessary to make further improvements to the investment climate. Fiat decided to invest in Serbia for a number of reasons, that also included the strategic position, and diligent, highly skilled and educated workforce.

One of the world's fastest-growing airlines, Etihad, has bought a 49% stake in Jat, the former Serbian national carrier, and this is only one part of a wider plan. Flight connections to Serbia are possible to the US, Australia, the Middle East and South East Asia via Abu Dhabi, and with the Balkan and European markets via Etihad subsidiary Air Berlin.

By June 2014, Air Serbia will serve more than 40 destinations in 30-plus countries, with 73,000 seats on more than 670 flights a week. There is clear potential for Air Serbia to take advantage if it can get its act together. Etihad is confident that with the management team it has in place, the new carrier will quickly turn a profit.

So nowadays business in Serbia can be profitable. Many foreign firms from different parts of the world, large and small, are successfully operating in Serbia.

Serbia is a small country with a lot of potential that needs to continue its improvements to the business environment to attract more foreign investment.

F

or one it’s a slightly disappointing, at least in this author’s eyes, album from Take That, perhaps too much of a Robbie without Guy Chambers influence on it, for my liking.

But, more importantly, it’s also an increasingly vital part of 21st Century life, and in many ways it could be argued that it’s a major cause of one of the major issues of 21st Century life, mental illness.

In simpler times, the extent of the average person’s ambitions were, largely speaking, all about bringing up a family, or providing an income to bring that family up and anything on top of that was largely seen as a bonus.

Then came the 1950s and the American dream, the aspirational culture, that sure as eggs are eggs, has gradually drifted across the pond to the extent that the majority of people are no longer just happy with their lot, but wish to be lots happier.

As a consequence, the meaning of the word progress has being cranked up to eleven, it used to be that league tables were confined to the sports field, but now most aspects of our work lives are rated, scored and compared and contrasted with our peers, with the rewards for those near the top of those tables, often great.

Of course, there are positives to this, in our education system it’s imperative that the next generation get the best schooling on offer, and if these tables assist with making that possible, then that’s a good thing.

But a lot of the teachers I know all swear that they spend more time ticking boxes for these tables than actually thinking about lessons, so maybe the balance isn’t quite right?

Then there’s the world of celebrity, suddenly everyone either seems to want to be famous, or is given the impression that they should be famous, but surely to be famous, implies a certain raising of status, which if all of us had it, well that status wouldn’t exist.

To put it another way, for every star in the sky, there’s millions of people needed to look up at them.

I’ve written in this wonderful magazine about my own battles with mental illness, and I know for a fact that a lot of

these struggles had their seeds planted in my need to prove myself in the world, prove the school yard bullies wrong, prove my own toxic theories about my self-esteem wrong.

At the moment, the battle is back on, I can’t say I’m winning it, but I’m certainly having a good go, but I’ve always been the sort of person who would say ‘after my next radio show I’ll relax’ or more recently ‘after my next book is written or the next play is performed I’ll relax’ But I’ve recently written my second book and with any luck, around the time you’re reading this, you’ll also be able to read a copy of the follow up to ‘Always the DJ’.

However, the hit from the pride I’ve felt for doing this, lasted about ten minutes, then came the need for the next hit, the next book, the next need to feel good about myself, to make more progress.

And I’m sure I’m not alone in this as fifty million prescriptions for anti-depressants were issued in the UK last year and they weren’t all in my name!

his life, makes no song and dance, is loathed to even talk much about his progress, but is making pretty solid steps in both his personal and work life.

So what’s the secret to making progress?

Perhaps there’s no secret, maybe the biggest tip is like the Buddhists say, live in the moment, accept that bad things will happen, but to deal with both the positive and the negative in a similar way.

Ultimately I guess, the key to making progress is not the money we make, the success we have in our private lives or with our careers, but genuine progress can in fact be measured by one word, happiness.

Remember that the next time you’re thinking of keeping up with the Jones’s. .

D

ictionaries define “progress” as the advance or development toward a better, more complete or more modern condition.

Deterioration is offered as a suitable antonym.

I can’t help but wonder if, on this occasion, the dictionary has missed the point somewhat.

Consider today’s communication technology in all its many forms.

We have email, mobile phones, web cams, social networks and any number of other tools all designed to make “communication” easier. Everything is geared towards a quicker and “more efficient” lifestyle. We even have networks that expressly limit the number of characters we can use.

Many would probably agree that all this technology should be regarded as progress.After all, we can save so much time using all these tools that we will have so much more time available for things like family and friends and relaxation.

But do we? Is that the reality of the “more complete and more modern condition” offered to us by this progress?

It seems to me that all this technology has had a somewhat detrimental effect on the quality of our lives.

We would sooner send a text message, or an email, than pick up a phone and talk to someone. We are inclined to take more work home with us. In fact, in many cases, we are actively encouraged to do so.

We can be contacted night or day, whether we like it or not.

More and more people feel compelled to post updates on “social” networks, informing the world of every aspect of their daily lives right down to the minutiae of what they have just cooked for dinner.

How can this possibly be considered as progress?

I live in Belgrade and have done so for the past two and a half years, or so.

Over the past few years, progress has been a dominant word here regarding Serbia’s aspirations to join the EU. Given the issues that many EU members are currently facing, I would suggest that joining the EU, and conforming to all the required conditions, might not be the best definition of progress.

I don’t want to open the complex political and cultural arguments that surround Serbia’s accession to the EU, but suffice to say that progress is not always perceived the same way in Brussels as it is here in Belgrade.

You might want do a little reading into the situation. You may very well be, as I was, quite surprised and not a little shocked at what the EU is expecting from Belgrade in return for the apparent “prize” of “progressing” towards EU membership.

On a lighter note I can point to the misuse of the word progress by explaining how Belgrade should, in my opinion, stop aspiring to a more Western influenced society.

For this I will use the unlikely examples of coffee and burgers. Belgrade has a thriving and very lively café culture.

It also has some of the very best fast food I have ever tasted.

Walking around the city you have a choice of literally hundreds of kafanas, all serving freshly made coffee and all manner of other drinks and snacks.

The coffee is good, it is very good.

The atmosphere in the kafanas is very good too. Friendly, hospitable and full of life, they offer a true flavour of what makes this city such a good place to visit.

Also in Belgrade you have a choice of such a variety of fast food, all freshly cooked and all so full of flavour. This is street food at its very best!

But, beware; “progress” is in town!

It takes the form of 'Costa lot and tastes worse' coffee shops and 'Mcdon’t taste as good' burger outlets.

Unfortunately, because of their American or Western image, these outlets are, unbelievably, welcomed and considered somehow cool and “progressive”.

Now, considering this region’s recent history, I find it amazing that anything American should be welcomed with such open arms! Especially anything that is so completely inferior to the local offerings This is the kind of “progress” that Belgrade needs to nip in the bud, and quickly. Before very long, she will find herself on a slippery slope towards a more complete and more modern condition that will only serve to destroy so much of that which makes this city great.

Be yourself Belgrade, it’s what you are so very good at!

his year has seen a great deal of progress, from new artists coming onto the global stage and new art fairs, to art coming into a new light as an ever increasingly attractive investment alternative to traditional investment options. But what I’ll talk about in this issue is the progress of my company and the artists we manage.

My company, Roth Management, has grown significantly. From taking on new country managers, to opening new divisions of the company (e.g. interior design), with clients now all over the world.

2013 was great; being recognized by The Guardian/Observer & Courvoisier as one of the top 500 cultural influencers in the world to watch, the end of the first year curating a monthly two story wall in Brazil, and helping to raise $2.6 million dollars for the TJ Martell foundation by donating art, and curating an exhibition.

While we’ve also signed new artists under management, such as Yoshioka Koji (Japanese master painter).

In 2013, Minjae Lee (an artists we’ve worked with since 2009), saw his social media reach over 220,000 on facebook alone (when we started working with him it was 500) and taking the front cover of Art Business News (Top 30 artists in the world under 30). The piece chosen for the front cover was 'Circulation' and with his new ICON series featuring people such as Devon Aoki (a new fan of his work), Joan Smalls, Audrey Hepburn and others, Minjae Lee is developing into a very special artist on the world stage.

Satoshi Komatsubara signed with Roth Management this year, marking a new direction within the style of artists we represent, opening us up to representing any style of artist. With Satoshi winning the Taro Okamoto award for contemporary art in 2012, seeing him recognized as one of the best artists in Japan for contemporary art in Japan and, in my option, one of the best in the world for installation art. Having exhibited in a museum when we first started representing him, he’s a very unique and interesting artist for the future.

281 Anti Nuke, who you might remember, from a previous article I wrote has had an outstanding year, by any measure.

On September 1st, The New Yorker called him “The Japanese Banksy”, while hundreds of networks and publications featured interviews of him (Reuters interview). Having a sold out exhibition at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan, allowed for his works to be presented to the best audience possible; journalists!

With over 90 art works to date, we started selling full collections, which has been a great success. With the constant media interest in Fukushima, he’s becoming more and more of a cult figure in Japan, and internationally. While selling his limited edition prints at $200 was intended to make them affordable, one of these prints sold at auction for $1500, showing the increased value and regard of his work. While still selling them for $200, to build his patron base, it’s always good to see the value of works we sell increase in value for those who collect from us. As we

discover have a public relations division of the company, it’s a wonderful example of seeing the results of our work.

Curating was also a big part of 2013, having curated various exhibitions around the world, it also included curating 3 exhibitions in Tokyo, within the same month, and all of these exhibitions were sold out with additional commission requests.

On a personal note, I spoke at Pecha Kucha in Japan, speaking about city planning and why art should be at the very center of all city-planning efforts. As a result, I’m now consulting on two city planning projects, which is a great honor and something I hope to do more of in the coming years.

One of the best projects, or directions of 2013, has been the interior design and hotel/corporation consulting, where we have not only been selecting the art works for these large projects but also the interior design, and custom made furniture for those clients.

But the best part of 2013, for me personally, has been the creating of Ryan Roth Galleries, starting with a location in Tokyo on the 47th Floor of a building looking over Tokyo bay. With a new location in Hong Kong under discussion and three other cities, if all goes to plan, by the end of 2014, we will have 4-5 galleries.

I could not do this alone by any means and having the trust/faith of a great team behind me, great artists and very good business partners who have all turned into valued friends, I’m fortunate enough to be in a position to make a significant impact on art and culture around the world.

hen venturing to Thailand, or indeed any part of Asia, it’s possible you’ll experience at least one night in Bangkok and given the Thai’s enthusiasm towards tourists, it’s a great gateway to ease in your Asian adventure. The Thai capital city offers variety to suit any traveler’s palate, whether you want to begin with a bang, explore culture, or wind down before jetting home.

Begin your day welcoming the sunrise with a magnificent view at Wat Arun, the “Temple Of Dawn”. Remember to dress appropriately for this Buddhist monument and perhaps climb its steps to the top to take in the scenery. Thai food is various and plentiful, so refuel at one of the many cafes or street food vendors – it’s an experience.

If bustle is your thing, stop by the backpacker haven of Khao San Road. Its hype has increased over recent years along with its development, so expect a street full of boisterous students, mass roadside massages, never-ending happy hours, fish pedicures and bargain tailors. Travel agents are aplenty here, so it’s a great place to book a reasonable tour or travel down to the idyllic islands, up to Chiang Mai, or a one-day local tour taking in traditional floating markets, elephant rides, the historical Bridge over the River Kwai, and the Tiger Temple conservation park, where you get up close and photographed personally with the big cats.

Bangkok likes to do things big and best, so if shopping is on the agenda, you’ll be impressed with the huge and elegant Siam Paragon center where you can seemingly buy anything, even supercars! For a more romantic shopping experience, especially good for souvenirs, take a free boat cruise from Taksin Bridge to Asiatique Riverfront center, where native boutiques 38

intersperse with picturesque casual and elegant dining, whilst dating locals peer down from their Ferris wheel view.

If your taste buds are ready, and tongue firmly in cheek, head over to the bizarre but fun “Cabbages and Condoms” restaurant, named in promotion of family planning and support of associated charities. The food is varied and delicious, and the décor is charming, magical, and peppered with various condom sculptures. Definitely unique!

If sitting on small stools sampling street food is your desire, hop over to Sukhumvit Soi 38 where a hamlet of stalls and open air spots compete for your palate.

The night still being young, you can shimmy over to Soi 11 where the bars and clubs with the ex-pat vibe reside; to Soi Cowboy where the hottest girl in the joint is a guy, or to one of the many karaoke spots.

I love Los Angeles and its varying scenery and culture, but nothing beats getting off the Boulevard and away from it all, so you can re-appreciate your return. So, with a fresh Face Forward charity gala hangover, we jetted to the other side of the world for some R&R&R – rest, relaxation and Sir Richard….

I packed my new ECBC carry-on, and drove into cool new startup Hubber who give you free parking, car wash and fill your tank while you’re gone. They rent your car to incoming visitors and cut you in on the cash – great peer-to-peer idea. A quick glass of champagne in the stunning new VIP lounge at LAX set us up for a fantastic flight on Turkish Airlines to our first stop, Istanbul.

Our quick Turkey layover, based at friendly boutique Magnauara Palace Hotel in Old City Istanbul, involved appearing in Director Murat Derman’s documentary, dinner at Suada on the Bosphorus river straddling the Asia-Europe border, epic ice-cream at Mado and a tour of Hagia Sophia. We haggled a great lamp at the Grand Bazaar, ate substandard street kebab due to hunger-impatience, then appeased our bellies with an epic multi-course meal at The Four Seasons Bosphorus, where they insisted we try the local Raki.

Who were we to argue? Traveling tipsy, we bumped into none other than Sir Richard Branson in the Terminal out. Inquiring about our upcoming flight, he wished us a good trip explaining he’d never been to Vietnam. Chowing down on my second gourmet meal of the evening in the Turkish Airlines first class seat (or should I say studio apartment) I relished in the fact that I was off to do something my idol has never done! Space? Meh. HCMC’s where it’s at.

The next couple of weeks, we bounced around Asia, starting in Ho Chi Minh City, down to a great tour of

Monkey Island where monsoon rain didn’t stop play.

We were in Vietnam for the premiere of a friend’s film, where the death of General Vo Nguyen Giap did stop play as national mourning was declared. So we skipped over to Thailand, enjoying a boutique stay in the elegantly discreet Cabochon Hotel in Bangkok, dinner at the bizarrely named Condoms & Cabbages before a fun tour of the floating markets and Tiger Temple conservation area, where you get really up close and personal with the sleepy afternoon big cats.

No time to waste, we slept on the overnight bus, waking up for a sunrise ferry over to the beautiful island of Koh Tao, which has remained less developed and, some might say, less ruined than its neighboring Koh Samui and Koh Phangan tourist traps. I often like to play the last-minute lottery on trips, following a couple of discreet internet mutterings, I uncovered the spot – on the map, and it seemed unreachable by road. A challenging but fun ATV ride later, the Moondance Magic View exceeded all expectations, and its idyllic secluded location and hand-built rustic simplistic grace puts it in my must-stay list!

Following dinner at the deservingly top-rated The Gallery, restaurateur-photographer-diver Chris Clark offered an exciting day of shoot and scuba which was foiled by our ATV accident which left the vehicle a crumpled mess, my girlfriend grazed up and my pocket $1000 lighter. Moral: steep hills are not an ATV’s friend!

Back in Bangkok, a quick rejuvenation on the Executive floor at city oasis Amari Watergate set us up for the trip back to Saigon, ready to get tuxed up for the World Premiere of romantic comedy Am Muu Giay Got Nhon. It was Hollywood all over again as we walked the red carpet with the film’s stars, producers

The end of the year becomes extremely film-focused in LA as competition heats up for Awards Season, so that weekend I took in the tragically uplifting story of Dallas Buyers Club which puts both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto in high consideration for their incredible performances; followed by a preview of Craig Robert Young’s short film Pepper at Soho House; rounded off with a table at The Hollywood Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel thanks to entrepreneur Con Mathios, where we mingled amongst A list royalty Julia Roberts, Harrison Ford, Sandra Bullock and Robert Downey Jr., along with some familiar Brit faces David Oyelowo and Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

Feeling inspired, I jumped back to my new production company offices on the Walk Of Fame to finish my short film Stefano Formaggio, develop the movie version of Andy & Chaz Bugger Off to America, and begin a new entertainment industry startup with one of the first web TV stars Jessica Rose – more on that soon.

Friends in town from San Fran introduced me to the Oscar-style steak at Sunset Strip hotspot Boa, which is now on my radar. An amazing cut topped with lashings of crab put us in good stead for the ensuing craziness of Beacher’s Madhouse at the Roosevelt, where flying midget bartenders liquor you up whilst a woman karate chops baseball bats with her 50lb boobs and a 7 foot stripper watches a bearded lady dance to mini-Kanye’s rap. Yes, really.

I feel so grateful to live in this city that each year I like to celebrate my LA-versary, doing something very LA. Cue; gun safety training and shooting with Nutopia at Tactical Black in them there hills, topped off with a Chef’s Table gluten-free tasting dinner at RockSugar.

We then (tried) to escape LA again test-driving a Tesla Model S on a road-trip to Yosemite National Park, but as beautiful and quick as the car is, the electric-only charging schedule makes you feel like you have a very

awkward baby that constantly needs attention. So instead of roaming the park’s beautiful scenery, we saw truck stops and diners and unhelpful farmers who, lets just say, weren’t really spreading the eco-love.

Tesla did fortunately get me back in time for the starstudded launch of the Jaguar F Type, where I made small talk with an extremely pleasant Simon Cowell, copped a cuddle from Miranda Kerr, ate fish ‘n’ chips and shepherd’s pie whilst Jag unveiled the new motor with a heist-themed stunt.

The fast-track to Christmas took me through December with a pre-screening of Scorsese’s new masterpiece The Wolf Of Wall Street – look out for the hilarious kitchen-cerebral-palsy-bolony chase scene – to a #GivingTuesday event raising awareness for this cover’s Perlan Mission. I taught TV news anchor Alexis DelChiaro some cockney over British Breakfast at Ye Olde King’s Head in Santa Monica, and mingled with Silicon Beach start-uppers at Be Great Partners Winter Wonderland event. I mixed whisky and chocolate courtesy of Macallan and Green & Black’s BritWeek tasting, and went giftcrazy at stylist-to-the-stars Chic Little Devil’s sample sale and my gastronomic downtown darling, Bottega Louie. I caught Homeland’s Javadi siding with Santa at Deborah Alessi’s holiday party, celebrated the great work of charity Hollywood Arts at Liz Hirsch’s festive bash, and ice-skated amongst palm trees in sunshine.

California Christmas is on the cards, as due to a certain Green Card pending, travel is off, so I’m all set to swap the flakes in LA for the snowflakes of Tahoe.

Eat as much fresh clean fruits and vegetables, fish and meat as you like.

There is no need to calorie count or eat certain foods on certain days the aim is to eat as many different varieties of vitamins and minerals as you can from fresh produce. There are hundreds of different fruits and vegetables to choose from but try sticking to seasonal types, and rotate your meats and fish as much as possible. This may mean you visit the supermarkets more than usual for the best results and, if budget allows, go for Organic produce to limit the effects of added pesticides and hormones (anything that is in the food that wasn’t there from the seed). Consume your fresh foods as quickly as you can once you have purchased them, the longer they stay stored the less nutrients and vitamins are available for absorption when eaten. Try freezing fresh foods but again once thawed eat them immediately to get the most benefits.

It’s not forever but at this stage, especially after Christmas, we need to clear our cupboards of selection boxes, cakes, biscuits, fizzy drinks, and anything packaged that contains sugar, or its alternatives, e.g Aspartame. Treat sugar as an addictive drug, once you ignore the cravings for long enough you’ve cracked it!

t’s that time of year when fitness, health, and weight loss has been swept aside, often bringing with it the regret of over indulgence during the annual festivities.

It sometimes puzzles me how much we let ourselves go during this short period, most often undoing all the hard work and time we have previously dedicated to training. So the feelings of regret are once again quickly followed by a strong desire and goodwill to make better choices, towards stripping the fat and becoming fitter and healthier as this year kicks off.

Everything begins with an idea or thought, so once you have made that decision to go healthy the best way to make it stick is to understand the value it has to you. Health and fitness have a lifetime value and if it’s important to you to be healthy, then constantly trying to understand why, and how much, at every opportunity along the journey, will help you remain accountable to yourself, as well as the plan, and get you fantastic results.

The worst thing you could do, if health and fitness is really your goal, is to pick one of the 500+ quick fix diets that are around.

The average 45-year-old woman, in the UK, from the age of 16 has been on 61 diets; that equates to around two a year [Royal college of Physicians, Action on Obesity Jan 2013] DIETS do not work… they are just contributing to the obesity crisis we are now in! Most encourage the consumption of processed foods as part of your daily intake or restrict your calories so you become fat and nutritionally deficient!

So let’s make some changes in the kitchen….

If you are used to drinking a lot of caffeine decrease the amount as much as possible, as quickly as possible, gradually.

Progress?

Only You Will Know...

The Value of Reflection on At the beginning of every New Year, I take some time to reflect and to evaluate whether I have achieved what I set out to do last year. I celebrate the year past for I have learnt that gratitude is most definitely the best attitude, and the more I am grateful for in life the more great things come my way.

Reflection is a task that I engage in at pivotal moments in my life. These may include my birthday, the day my mother passed on, the birthdays of family members and at the end of certain projects. I value the processes which reflection takes me through and the introspection, and silence, that I associate with it. Whereby I often emerge with clarity and insight that may otherwise not have been gained.

Progress is evaluated as part of this process. What exactly does progress mean in this ever-changing world? In 2014, can you evaluate these areas and decide what progress has been made, and what progress you would like to attain?

There are the planned and the unplanned relationships in which we find ourselves. The activities that we engage in and the opportunities that were present in 2013.

Decluttering on This time of the year is certainly a great time to declutter and this does not just apply to clothes and to ‘things’. It is also a great time to declutter and to move on from relationshops that have bought constant negativity, drama or confusion into your life. As you walk into 2014, it may be a great time to carefully consider the value of these relationships to your overall progress. The relationships that we invest in, can ultimately say a lot about us. I have heard friends say that people they know well treat them very badly and are unreliable! As I listen to the stories I wonder why an individual would hold onto such a negative relationship. The universe will provide us with new and positive experiences, if that is what we want AND, only if we are willing to let go of the people who mean us no good.

As you give this some serious thought. Take a piece of paper and complete a truth analysis of the relationships that you know you should release yourself from. Write down the benefits and the challenges of these relationships. This may result in relationships redefined. Your thoughts may take you beyond the who, why, and how of the relationship to the ‘if’. After all, if a person brings constant negative and unacceptable contributions to your life, and if they aim to sabotage your progress, and offer no positive support, why would you want to hold onto that relationship?

Letting go of relationships is about stepping forward.

Watching a baby take their first steps is fascinating to me.

They get up. The try. They fall! They get up. They try. They fall! They do not give up though! Letting go of an unhealthy relationship may be just like this. However, on taking the first step, other doors will certainly open.

Activity Changes on Another change may be to the activities, or habits, that do not serve you in any positive way. Are you participating in activities that are no good for your spiritual and material health and well-being? Exercise is something which friends and family members often admit to not doing enough of each year. The best intentions are there but to remain motivated, and active, can be challenging alongside family commitments, work commitments and maintaining some leisure time.

health, wealth & wisdom Where I currently reside, there are so many practical reasons why it is impossible to stick to my weekly visits to the gym.

These include the 1-2 hour journey that takes place after the gym class, as opposed to a smooth ride straight to my gate after work. Another is the challenges of travelling in a taxi alone and the risks that are associated with that. As this has become more and more apparent, I have committed myself to a set number of hours of exercise each week. I aim to do four hours each week. However I have compromised with myself as to how this will happen. I can run up and down the stairs for ten times to get my heart racing. I can do my Yogalates DVD three times a week. I can power walk on the days when the traffic is low; as this town has no pavements, etc., etc.

That compromise has served me well as it, first of all, released me from keeping fit in only one way and gave me the satisfaction of knowing that I could still meet my own targets. How did you meet your exercise targets last year? Can you compromise and look at options which are realistic and that fit in with your lifestyle? This may also apply to eating more healthily, keeping a journal, developing a better worklife balance and engaging in more social activities. Which of these is your personal goal for 2014? Please be kind to yourself and make the goal, or goals, specific, measureable, achievable, realistic and target driven. A SMART goal would be, I will eat a healthy meal out with friends once a month.

For those of you who are struggling to have a social life, and to stay healthy, you can combine the two here! What other targets will you achieve in 2014?

Having looked at the friendships that bring value to your life and assessed how you can improve your activity participation in 2014, the last thing to look at is ‘opportunities’.

Seizing Opportunities Which opportunities did you hear of, act upon, put your toe in the water of, or run away from in 2013? Evaluate them and ask yourself if they still look the same one year on? Have you changed or have your circumstances changed to allow you to embrace one or more of these?

Investment was a ‘dirty word’ for me for some years. My limited experience of this told me it was only for the filthy rich who could afford to lose money! So, I associated ‘investment’ with ‘losing’. That is such a powerful image! Can you imagine how that worked against me moving forward in this area of my life? For years, opportunities were suggested but I was risk averse. I was always too afraid to move forward.

I would watch and applaud others but ‘it wasn’t for me! Now my financial situation has changed and the opportunities for investment have also changed. However, more important than either of these is my mindset, which has changed. I am now investing and looking for more opportunities. I am a much calmer and relaxed investor and I still research offers , and speak to others who have taken these up. The progress for me here is that my approach, and my belief, around these opportunities have changed. For me, that is a sign of progress!

Progress for each and every one of us will mean different things. Redefining your friendship groups, changing how your activities take place, and seizing more opportunities may mean ‘progress’ for some of you. For others it may be the exact opposite and you may need to grow your friendship groups, and reduce the activities and opportunities in which you are involved. It will be personal and only you can define what progress means. After all, only you will know!

any an argument has been raised about the love of money being the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10). The image of the greedy and the gluttonous blinded by their lust for money, selfish and godless might make some of us feel saintly and martyr-like for surviving with less, but the money we use today merely reflects the evolution of how we trade with one another.

When we existed in small tribes we could barter with cattle, grain, slaves and even our own skills in order to gain the things necessary for survival.

We had, to some extent, trust that the cattle were healthy, the grains were good, slaves useful and skills worthy of the jobs that needed completion. To detest those who have much now, and to pine for simpler times, implies that nobody “way back when” had more than they needed, hoarded to deprive others of resources, stole, lied, cheated or fabricated goods for personal gain.

This Utopia is a fantasy.

The movement from trading [cattle/ skills/people/grain] to the exchange of coins for goods and services apparently came around 1000BC, in China, where metals like Bronze and Copper were used to replace the Cowrie system of trading shells, then, widely used across the globe. 500 years later and coins made from rarer metals (gold, silver, bronze) appeared in what is now modern-day Turkey.

It wasn’t until 1816 before England made Gold the standard of value, followed by the USA in 1900. Gold Standard basically meant that varying denomination of paper money were ‘backed’ by gold stored and managed centrally [Paper Money had been used in China since circa 800BC, Bank Notes were circulated in England circa 1600 and in America circa 1700 but was not previously linked to gold].

The Gold Standard itself started to unravel after the 1930’s Great Depression when the value of gold plummeted. By the 1970’s the move

Now that confidence is wavering in the current system and trust has been eroded by recent revelations of the corrupt, greedy, gluttonous custodians of the ‘world’s money’ many are baying for gold to make a comeback, some are looking to the future and creating ‘cyber money’.

A growing percentage of transactions take place electronically and it was only a matter of time, and innovation, before Bitcoins became a reality. A decentralized digital currency that titillated the world’s media Bitcoins have now emerged as a serious contender for tomorrow’s currency; the seeming attraction being the claim that Bitcoins “cannot be manipulated by any government, bank, organization or individual” [https://en.bitcoin.it/ wiki/Main_Page].

By and large it is irrelevant what replaces our current system of money.

Few of the things we have used to trade (beyond people and cattle) have much intrinsic value and the greedy, the gluttonous and the selfish will still remain amongst us. Whilst some may dream of a world without “money”, where we manage in a ‘gift economy’ (people give and receive freely without the expectation of paying for things) this ignores globalisation, cultural mores and norms, and human nature.

In a gift economy there will still be a need to exchange one thing for another. My painting skills, for your singing skills, your piano playing skills for my sardonic wit at dinner parties… but what if I find that I prefer my other

In reality whether we pay in kindness, effort, gold, frankincense, myrrh or diamond some people will always receive more than others. Some people have an inherent ability to attract wealth, health and happiness, in all its forms, whether achieved at the physical or metaphysical level. The human race is simply not at that divine stage where we co-exist harmoniously, thoroughly accepting all idiosyncrasies and freely sharing what we have. It can be argued that we have not yet progressed that far!

Maybe the world we are looking for is one where those who receive abundantly are confident that redistributing their wealth, health and happiness will only lead to more. Likewise those who are not as fortunate in their exploits trust that whatever they have to offer is enough and they will never be left behind, whatever system is in place.

evelyn Ntoko Rakeepile (Mase) (1944 - 1957) Whilst Mandela studied law at the University of Witwatersrand and simultaneously devoted his time to the pursuit of his political ideology Evelyn bore the first 4 of his 6 children, 1 of whom died in infancy of meningitis (Mandela, Nelson (1994). Long Walk to Freedom Volume I: 1918–1962. Little, Brown and Company. ISBN 978-0754087236.)

It’s documented that Evelyn, a nurse, supported their family whilst Nelson studied (http:// tinyurl.com/nco3vj4) although she did not support his political views or his activism.

Married for 13 years they divorced in 1957 amidst accusations of infidelity (Mandela’s). A devout Jehovah’s Witness she moved from their marital home to Cofimvaba and opened a grocery store.

A vocal critic of Mandela, his infidelity and ‘neglect’ of his family she eventually remarried a fellow Jehovah’s Witness and retired business man Simon Rakeepile.

She died on 30th April 2004 and Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela (his 2nd wife), and Grace Mandela (his 3rd and last wife) attended.

Winnie Madikizela Mandela (1958 - 1996) Married for 38 years, 27 of which Nelson Mandela spent in prison, the couple had 2 daughters and shared the same political ideology. Herself an activist, politician and Nobel Prize nominee she is fondly referred to as “Mother of the Nation” by her supporters.

During Mandela’s 27 year imprisonment she often spoke on his behalf to the worlds media. Seen as a fundamental instrument of the anti-apartheid movement she was continuously persecuted by the Apartheid regime, tortured, held under house arrest, spied on and even exiled as an attempt to isolate her from the cause she championed.

Controversy also followed her throughout their marriage. During his imprisonment she was accused of kidnapping a 14 year old boy and ordering his murder (http://tinyurl. com/o4739y4). Acquitted of all related charges, bar the kidnapping, her reputation as the glamorous, vocal, and politically astute wife of Nelson Mandela soon deteriorated to one dogged by accusations (and convictions) of theft, fraud, and political violence.

Although by his side, initially, it’s alleged that she was unfaithful during his time in prison and they separated until their divorce in 1996. Nonetheless they remained a part of each other’s lives until his death on Thursday December 4th, 2013.

Of their relationship she is quoted as saying; "I had so little time to love him. And that love has survived all these years of separation … perhaps if I'd had time to know him better I might have found a lot of faults, but I only had time to love him and long for him all the time."

Machel, the widow of Mozambican President; Samora Machel (An anticolonial activist who died in a mysterious plane crash in 1986), wasn’t readily welcomed by South Africans (http://tinyurl.com/oq5om69) but it is said that her graceful and quiet demeanour led to her acceptance as the ‘first lady’.

rogress means things change. In the world of food the biggest change over the last few decades has been “fusion” food.

Some think this is messing with classic dishes, but I think it’s so interesting how you can take dishes from different sides of the world and mix them up to create something both new and interesting, but also delicious!

Creating this type of cuisine is daunting for people as it takes some trial and error to get it right. This is a simple dish I have created for you which is super easy to make and shows off how fusion works.

Heat the olive oil in a pan and finely chop the onion. Add the onion to the pan and cook on a low heat until softened. Have your tin of tomatoes open and ready.

Once the onion has become translucent, add the crushed or minced garlic into the pan and add the lemongrass stalk, turning up the heat and stirring for about 30-40 seconds. Now pour in the tomatoes and turn the heat down again.

Add the soy sauce, sugar and chilli and slowly cook for around 40 minutes stirring occasionally until the sauce has reduced by a third.

Remove the lemongrass and add the coriander, basil and prawns.

Turn up the heat and cook for about 5 minutes or until the prawns have just cooked through.

Serve with angel hair pasta or fine rice noodles. But please don’t add cheese!

You could try this using spring onion (scallion) instead of the regular onion. Just stir fry at the start with the garlic on a slightly higher heat for about 90 seconds to 2 minutes.
