THE INTERACTION BETWEEN NATURE AND HUMAN URBAN GARDEN, BRIDGE, PLATFORM

HSU, YU CHENG

ABOUT  SITE The site is located in the centre of the neighbourhood of Marvila overlooking the riverfront and old Marvila. The area is imbued with a strong architectural imaginary. The north east of the site is defined by the ruins of a palace built in the first half of the 18th century, typical of this time when Marvila was a leisure area for the wealthier classes. The industrial past is still present today alongside the more recent housing projects, such as towers bordering the north of the plot.

In the middle of unclaimed zones, the site is typical of a larger urban condition of this metropolis. It also forms a development potential of the city against an urban sprawl, being situated in the actual limits of the city.

The city envisages for this area an ambitious urban plan reconfiguration, whose impact will reach further than the close neghbourhood, with the construction of a third bridge crossing the Tagus river.

ABOUT THE ABANDON GARDEN According the mapping, we will see there is lots of the garden near the site. Most of them are abandon, but another are private . So, my stratege is to create a "open" garden for everyone. The population can choose the plot you want and plant some vegetable up there. With this method to connect everyone into a social area. The plot will be organic farm and will have the flexible pattern of agricultural land uses. Providing different feeling for the people who living here.

ABOUT THE CONCEPT My concept is based on the "agricultural land" through the plot. Furthermore, I extend it to discuss about the relationship between human and nature. So, I made some drawing to discuss the "nature growing phenomenon". Try to find the connecting point. In the end, I figured out that the "crossing phenomenon in the branch" is interesting. It inspired me to think about the "people flow" and "how people meet each other". And then, the "beidge" came out. It imitated the form of crossing branch and gave the meeting opportunity to population in Marvila.

ABOUT THE PROJECT First, looking through the garden around the site, it's a unorganized . Because of that , I create a new agricultural pattern on the site. It will be more flexible garden in this area. Having connection with surrounding garden. To avoid ruining the garden, I present another path through the site , that is a "bridge" for people walking, meeting, sightseeing on this new construction element. Making a extremely different typology of architecture in Marvila. The "bridge"is the nice way to have a interaction with nature objects. It makes people can flow organic, have the choice to choose which way to go or where to stay.

After the "bridge", we also considered the using space. I would make the urban spaces being on the higher level. Owing to let the garden below have great sunlight entering. Also, to divide usage of the spaces. Gardening will be in the ground level. People meeting in the middle level, and the functional area will be on the top for the better view and the better feeling.

"PLATFORM" The floating platform in the middle of the construction, creating a special meeting point and new activity - market. People can grab the their own vegetation that planned on the ground floor sell it in the market

"OBSERVATION" People can walk up to the observation on the gallery. It allows people to see the river site, and stay there to feel the large cover that making protection.

"BRIDGE" The organic bridge cross the site, it makes the people won't destroy the vegetation down there. In addition, you can go through the path that be created. Go back home or Meet someone up there.

"GARDEN" The roof is 15 meters - height, that it wouldn't block the sunlight and in the same time, it allow wind and water get in the garden in the groundfloor.

ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION Talking to the construction, I present a huge steel structure in the site due to create a cover for community center. Furthermore, that type of the building will be stand out in Marvilla and be the most special place that fascinating lots of people. Not only be the huge center for population, but also be a container for culture. That make people feel the different atmosphere and discover plentiful object of Marvilla, like housing, path, garden.

To make people flowing in the community center more nature, I decided to use the advantage of steel structure. Using the cable connecting the beams let the platform where people staying floating in the sky. So the column won't block the view of the garden's pattern and surrounding seeing. People can have a different experience of spaces on the platform.

ABOUT THE REFERENCE

Mies van der Rohe's project for a Convention Hall for Chicagowas sponsored by the city's

south side planning board at a time when the construction of such a building was imminent. This project

represents the largest of his clear span buildings; its column-free interior permits unobstructed views for an assembly of over 50000 people; or, alternatively provides 500000 sq ft of unimpeded exhibition space.

The building consists of two distinct elements: 1.A ground plane- with the major portion lowered to form the main exhibition floor and surrounding seating tiers. 2.A 720 ft square steel roof and enclosure structure- supported at its perimeter 20 ft above the ground plane in order to allow access to the hall from all sides.

In the end, the design try to show a new communication type. "GARDEN" "BRIDGE" "PLATFORM""STRUCTURE"all this element create a new activity , new movement for people. So you can pass the site easily by bridge, grab some vegetables from garden ,buy some food on the platform and meet someone somewhere.
