Spring is more commonly known as “mud season” around these parts. But whatever the weather — snow, sleet or glorious sun — there’s still plenty to do, see and eat. In the early part of the season, freezing nights and daytime thaws mean one thing: maple sugaring. Vermont’s Maple Open House Weekend, on March 21 and 22, invites visitors into the sugar bush and the sugarhouse to explore and sample the sweet stuff. In this issue, we talk with Sam Cutting of Dakin Farm — one of the participating locations — about how he spends the springtime. When the days grow a little warmer, consider a scenic stroll through Burlington’s Wildways. These walking paths are part of an ongoing project to conserve and connect natural areas, which account for a quarter of the city’s land. And you know what they say: The best way to explore a city is on foot. If you’d rather be road tripping, may we suggest an art adventure? During Spring Open Studio Weekend, on May 23 and 24, Vermont artists and crafters open their studio doors. We’ll introduce you to three worth seeking out — and point you in the direction of nearby food and fun, too. There’s much more to experience this season, from the Burlington Farmers Market to Vermont Restaurant Week to a showcase of Abenaki culture. If you’re just passing through Vermont, we hope you’ll be convinced to return for a longer stay. Use this magazine, too, as a guide to the airport and on-the-ground transportation options. Explore hidden wilderness along the Burlington Wildways

ou might not realize it from the hustle and bustle of downtown, the postwar suburban sprawl of the New North End, or the hip postindustrial South End, but Burlington is pretty wild. Like, Henry David Thoreau/Walden Woods kind of wild. Despite its urban trappings, Vermont’s largest city hides a treasure trove of natural wonders. The trick is knowing where to find them. Launched in 2017, a coalition called Burlington Wildways has been working to improve, preserve and promote some of the Queen City’s most spectacular natural areas, from restoring wetlands at Oakledge Park to reforesting a new park along North Avenue. Last fall, the nonprofit organization celebrated the grand opening of the Intervale Wildway. That’s a 5.5-mile trail that winds alongside the Winooski River from Salmon Hole in Winooski to Ethan Allen Park in the New North End. Burlington Wildways is a partnership of the Winooski Valley Park District, the Intervale Center, Rock Point and Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront. All are major public-facing landowners in the city. “One of the things that all of us collectively realized is that there are these amazing natural areas in Burlington, but they were hard to navigate your way through,” said Burlington Wildways director Zoe Richards. The Burlington Wildways trail project doesn’t involve building new trails. That’s partly because there are already too many of them, according to Richards, a wildlife biologist. Most are what she calls “social trails” — informal, unmaintained and usually unplanned pathways that can be tricky to find and follow. The idea is to improve and condense existing trail networks so they’re well marked and more navigable. “Our goal isn’t to litter the landscape with trails,” said Richards. “It’s to make fewer trails, but in the right places that are more ecologically sensitive and easier to find.” The Intervale Wildway is accessible at numerous points, including trailheads at the Intervale Center and the Ethan Allen Homestead. It’s a gentle, scenic walk through floodplain forest and marshland. Much of the trail hugs the banks of the twisting Winooski River, where you’re apt to see ducks floating in the lazy current or the occasional beaver or otter sliding into the water. Over the winter, a wildlife camera on the trail caught a bobcat walking along the river.

ometimes you need to get out of Burlington. There, we said it! Yes, this city has most of the things you could ever want: renowned breweries, unique restaurants, miles of lakeside trail, and a thriving arts and music scene. But that doesn’t mean you should overlook the rest of Vermont, where someone is doing something cool in every little town or village. The Green Mountain State is a haven for creative types, and there’s no better showcase of artistic and geographic diversity than the Vermont Crafts Council’s biannual Open Studio Weekend (vermontcrafts.com), organized by director Martha Fitch. In spring and fall, artists across the state open their doors, allowing visitors a peek into their lives and workspaces. This season’s event takes place on May 23 and 24 — but if your visit spans different dates, many artists are happy to take individual appointments. Read on to discover three studios, within an hour or less, that are well worth a day trip.

To really get a sense of Gerald K. Stoner’s steel sculptures, visiting his studio is vital. That’s because many of his creations are taller than a room’s ceiling and bulkier than a kitchen table. The abstract shapes of his sculptures, while beautiful, make for unwieldy transportation. Open Studio Weekend, Stoner says, “is the one opportunity that I’m gonna get to have 50 to 70 pieces on display for people to see. Because it’s a lot of work to lug these pieces around.” A visit to Stoner’s property entails wandering around a full sculpture garden of his work. This might include anything from a small herd of abstract horses to a towering stack of geometric shapes secured with curved steel bands. Despite its industrial nature and naturally rigid material, his metal work reflects movement, he says. Stoner first began welding in college, where he’d originally pursued a degree in photography. He’s now an art teacher at St. Albans High School and the Community College of Vermont. He says working with steel called to him immediately. “It just seemed to resonate with me. I had family members that had worked in steel mills in the Midwest,” he says. “It really seemed to be the kind of thing that worked in terms of what I was trying to say visually.” Pour prendre toute la mesure des sculptures d’acier de Gerald K. Gerald a découvert la soudure au collège, où il a d’abord suivi des études en photographie. Il enseigne maintenant l’art à l’école secondaire St. Albans et au collège communautaire du Vermont. Husband and wife Matt and Marion Seasholtz work in wildly different mediums, but they find a lot to love about sharing their lives as artists. Matt is a glassblower who worked in a Pennsylvania glass shop for nearly two decades, all the while developing his own style and body of work. Marion is a quilter, educated at the Philadelphia College of Art. Her work has evolved to include creating flags and wind socks for businesses, as well as selling quilting kits and hand-dyed fabric. The two met at a retail show where their booths were across from each other. “I’ve always been interGlass-blown bowl ested in glass and collecting glass,” Marion says. So she went to Matt’s booth to say hi. “A friendship started, and then the rest was history.” Today, Marion’s studio is in the basement of their secluded Johnson property. Matt has recently relocated his studio to a new barn outside. Despite their separate spaces, both artists say it’s helpful to have someone around to consult on the creative and business sides of their work. “Matt and I have a very similar color sense and design sense,” Marion says. “We can bounce ideas off of each other and suggest things to each other.” Visitors will see a large variety of both artists’ work. Matt often gives glassblowing demonstrations. “You can see the process. You’re in the room right behind my bench where I’m working, so you can kind of get a feel for the heat,” he says. “You get a little taste of what glassblowing is about.” Matt et Marion Seasholtz sont un couple et travaillent avec des médiums très différents, mais ils s’apportent beaucoup mutuellement. Magic Hat Mardi Gras Anyone who’s visited New Orleans knows that Mardi Gras isn’t a day but a season — a period of several rollicking weeks culminating in Fat Tuesday, a last gasp of indulgence before Lent. In Burlington, however, cold weather means the good times roll well past Ash Wednesday. This year’s Mardi Gras festival, hosted by local brewery Magic Hat for the 25th year, takes place in late March. Start the day right at Kegs & Eggs: beer, breakfast sandwiches and tunes in the brewery’s quirky Artifactory. A new exhibition honors the history of Vermont’s Abenaki tribes 1) Colorful finger-weave twined bag made by Vera Sheehan of the Elnu Tribe. This is an ancient, traditional way of making bags from milkweed or other fiber material. 2) Original 1700s Hudson Bay Company gorgett and skunk bean necklace. These were given by the French to leaders during the French and Indian War, as a way for French troops to recognize status within a tribe. The French beads represented skunk beans that were worn by warriors in case they needed to make a soup in a hurry. 3) Traditional beaded buckskin dress made by Lori Lambert. Not the least of Stevens’ skills is storytelling, which airport visitors can witness on a fixed-frame TV next to the exhibit. He narrates the legend of Odziozo — a giant who was credited with creating Lake Champlain and its adjacent mountains and rivers. Along with this animated myth, a documentary explains that water is the lifeblood of nature-focused Native culture. Stevens and others in the video speak eloquently about the human connection to and responsibility for protecting water. In a time when the Earth’s natural resources are at risk, their commentary has particular resonance. The documentary’s essential message — “Everything in life has to be respected” — is a thread that ties past and present together in the Abenaki exhibit. “It’s important to show people we’re still here,” Stevens said in an interview. “I want people to see the vibrant culture. We want [Native] kids to be proud that our culture is on display.” When your flight takes off over Lake Champlain, look down, recall the story of Odziozo and see if you can spot his spiritual resting place — the tiny island called Rock Dunder. Impressed with his own creation, the story goes, Odziozo decided to turn himself into stone and remain forever to enjoy the views. The rock is on the state’s register of historic places; in Abenaki lore, it is sacred.

odern air travel is a hurry-up-and-wait situation: You dutifully show up two hours early to allow for check-in and getting through security. Then you plop down in a chair with a coffee and a smartphone until your plane begins to board. But here’s a tip: At the Burlington International Airport, you could spend your wait time walking around to look, listen and learn. Contemporary paintings by local artists adorn many of the airport’s walkways. Larger-than-life murals of vintage photos — and a half-scale replica of a 1911 Burgess-Wright Model F aircraft — help convey the history of the 100-yearold airport itself. And now, passengers awaiting their flights can engage with a much older story: that of the area’s original human inhabitants. On the second floor, adjacent to a sunny atrium, a recently installed gallery holds artifacts representing the four recognized Abenaki tribes in Vermont: the Nulhegan, Missisquoi, Koasek and Elnu. The clothing, jewelry, baskets, gourd bowls, pipes and other objects are beautifully, expertly made. But take a close look and you’ll likely sense a long, proud tradition of craft, sacred ritual and self-sufficiency. Inside the narrow, glass-walled space, six mannequins are dressed in resplendent Abenaki regalia, including a woman’s beaded buckskin ensemble of cap, shirt, slim skirt and moccasins; and a thick, colorful bear medicine coat made of blankets from French trading posts. (The coat’s red capelet depicts other medicinal motifs of sage, sweet gum, tobacco and cedar.) Two outfits from the late 19th century, made of sturdy cotton with patchwork trim and elaborate headgear, are described in accompanying signage as the costumes of “roadside sellers” and were not customary Native wear in the Northeast. In particular, that cumbersome headdress of red feathers, more typical of Plains Indians, would not be practical in the woods, pointed out Don Stevens. The curator of the airport exhibit, Stevens has been the chief of the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation since 2010 — alongside being a counselor, businessman, teacher, environmentalist and artist. His mission is essentially “to keep our culture alive,” he said. That began even before he was elected chief, when then-governor Jim Douglas appointed Stevens to the Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs in 2006; Stevens led the fight to gain official state recognition for the Abenaki people in Vermont.

am Cutting IV, president of Dakin Farm in Ferrisburgh, was 5 years old when he got his first paying gig on the family farm. He polished apples his father bought by the bushel at local orchards, then sold the fruit “red side up” at the roadside farmstand on Route 7. Cutting paid back his father’s purchase price and kept the profit — perhaps $80 in a weekend, he said. “He really got me hooked,” said Cutting, now 62. “That was a lot for a little kid.” Throughout his youth on the farm, Cutting took on more work, smoking hams over smoldering corncobs and gathering sap for maple syrup. As the family business grew, those became cornerstone products at Dakin Farm, whose annual revenue has increased from $10,000 in 1960 to $8 million today, according to Cutting. Roughly 60 percent of Dakin Farm’s business is through internet sales, with a significant spike during the holiday season. Last winter, the company packed a record 8,033 orders in a single day. Visitors to Vermont can get a taste of Dakin Farm at the Maple Open House Weekend on March 21 and 22, or shop its stores in Ferrisburgh and South Burlington. Those simply flying through the Burlington International Airport can find similar Green Mountain State specialty products — syrup, summer sausage, maple popcorn, cheese — for sale in the airport gift shop. BTV caught up with Cutting to learn about the arc of his career — from Addison County apples to nationwide e-commerce. Business growth hasn’t kept his family from vigorous recreational activity: hiking, sailing, biking, skiing. Cutting has traversed the 273-mile Long Trail as a teenager and as an adult. When his daughters were growing up, the family tackled tall mountains in the summer. “It was three little girls, a golden retriever, my wife and I,” Cutting said. Until knee replacement surgery slowed him down in the spring of 2018, Cutting cycled about 2,000 miles a year. His annual mileage is reduced now, but his enthusiasm is not. “I love to recreate,” he said. “Right from the beginning, my motto was ‘Work hard, play hard.’ I’ve always been an enthusiast of what Vermont has to offer.” 30 BTVMAGAZINE.COM

What Addison County hike do you recommend? One parameter: At the end of the hike, you eat at a nearby restaurant. I have to say Snake Mountain [in Addison]; that’s very accessible for people. The view from the summit is incredible. Snake Mountain is a little more remote than Mount Philo [in Charlotte], and it’s a bigger hike. It’s just a nice length to get a really good workout, with an incredible reward of the view at the top. If I were going to eat on the way home, I guess I’d go to Vergennes. 3 Squares is a funky little place. I’d get a falafel in a pita, with some tahini and vegetables.

It’s springtime, and you’re going on a seethe-buds-coming-out drive. What route do you take? Historically, one of my favorite things to do in the spring would be [to] go for a long bike ride. I would drive to Island Pond, park, get on the bicycle, and go up to Norton, across to Canaan and down the Connecticut River Valley to Bloomfield. And then back to Island Pond. It’s that corner of Vermont — the Northeast Kingdom — and it’s gorgeous.

What’s a shorter bike route for people who can’t pedal 100 miles? There’s a flatter one, and it’s a beautiful little route: Go down 22A to Addison and take 17 over to West Addison. At the West Addison General Store — “WAGS” — have a Gatorade and Fig Newtons. They give you the sugar you need. Then take the Lake Road back to Panton. And at Panton, you either go out to Basin Harbor or head back to Vergennes.
