With roots dating back to the early 1800’s, the Poconos is rich in history. Previously consumed with tourism, coal mining and conservation, the local past is one of robust antiquity. Whether coming to see America’s first commercial locomotive train or the infamous Lincoln Flag, there’s a ton of history to be discovered. Read on for eight museums to visit across the region.
can be toured seven days a week from Memorial Day to October 31.

1. Asa Packer Mansion
Located in historic Jim Thorpe, the Asa Packer Mansion was built in 1861 for multi-millionaire Asa Packer. He moved to town during the booming coal mining industry, founded the local railroad and university and made significant contributions to the community. This 18-room, Victorian-style mansion has been preserved in all its glory and

The Columns Museum is home to the Pike County Historical Society in downtown Milford. Here, area artifacts from the early 1900’s are on display; tour times vary throughout the year. One of the most notable exhibits is the Lincoln Flag, which has remained a key component of our nation’s past. The museum also has genealogy records available for those in search of their own history.
PIKE 3. Dorflinger Glass Museum
Nestled into the wooded forests of the Poconos, the Dorflinger Glass Museum is home to one of the nation’s largest displays of Dorflinger Crystal. Starting in the 1860’s, Christian Dorflinger produced the finest glassware here where some pieces were distinguished enough to reside in the White House. Several exhibits display over 1,000 pieces of crystal throughout the museum. Tours are available Wednesday through Sunday from now until October 28.
4. Grey Towers National Historic Landmark
Perched on top of 100, secluded acres sits Grey Towers National Historic Landmark. Built in 1886 in Milford as a summer retreat for the Pinchot family, Grey Towers later became son Gifford Pinchot’s permanent residence. With a true love for the environment, Gifford introduced conservation to the country and founded the United State Forest Service. Since donated to the US Forest Service and established as a national landmark, mansion tours are available Thursday through Monday now until December.
5. Old Jail Museum
Another gem in downtown Jim Thorpe, the Old Jail Museum is a must-see. Since its creation in 1871, the jail was in operation until 1995. It’s claim to fame is the hanging of the notorious Molly Maguires miners and Cell 17; a handprint of a prisoner who proclaimed his innocence has eerily remained on the wall for hundreds of years.
7. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm
Step back in time to experience life on the farm. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is a life-action museum preserving the 19th century Pennsylvania German heritage that founded the farm. Period-dressed “family” members re-enact the life of the original family who lived here from the 1760s to 1913.
Rumored supernatural activity occurs at the jail when you least expect it. Come experience a late-night ghost tour in the fall or visit now except Wednesdays.
Live agriculture demonstrations and events occur throughout the year as well as special holiday festivities. The farm is open for tours Tuesday through Sunday April until Labor Day.
6. Pocono Indian Museum
8. Wayne County Historical Society & Museum
The Pocono Indian Museum is the only museum in the region that showcases the history of the native Delaware Indian. Dating as far back as 10,500 BC, the museum features ancient artifacts, weapons, and tools that the Indians weaved into the framework of their culture over thousands of years. Open year-round besides Thanksgiving and Christmas, the museum also features a large gift shop full of both traditional and non-traditional treasures.
While in Honesdale, it pays to stop at the Wayne County Historical Society & Museum. Known as the birthplace of the American railroad, the Poconos has long ties to the train-era. Here a replica of The Stourbridge Lion, the country’s first locomotive, is permanently on display. The museum also features histories relevant to the region with displays like Native American artifacts and Dorflinger crystal. Events take place at historical locations off-site throughout the county as well. Stop by Wednesday through Saturday and select Sundays.

PIKE For an autumn adventure set ablaze in brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows, escape the city and venture to the Pocono Mountains for spectacular color paired with small-town charm. Home to more than 120 varieties of trees, shrubs, and plants, the Poconos’ diverse vegetation adds to its fall palette, and three distinct color zones let you catch autumn’s peak all season long in these six charming Poconos’ towns.
1. Stroudsburg
Strollable Stroudsburg mixes old Americana flair with a young college town vibe. Whether you’re craving pub fare, Thai, or French cuisine, you’ll find it in Stroudsburg—typically partnered with craft beers and creative cocktails. See fall colors best on a leisurely woodland amble or bike ride along Brodhead Creek’s gravel path. Find tougher riverside trekking in the neighboring Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
2. Delaware Water Gap
The town of Delaware Water Gap is nestled into the national recreation area, where you can hike a section of the Appalachian Trail to get an up-close view of the autumn scenery. The Mount Minsi Trail follows the AT’s white blazes to summit the peak for a stunning overlook of red, yellow, and orange changing leaves. Back in town, enjoy a great meal or catch a weekend jazz performance at the Deer Head Inn.
3. Jim Thorpe
Once called the “Switzerland of America,” the Victorian town of Jim Thorpe did not always bear this former Olympian’s name. Back in its anthracite coal days, Jim Thorpe went by the name of Mauch Chunk—Lenape for Mountain of the Sleeping Bear—and was second only to Niagara Falls as a tourist destination. Today, the town’s popular with outdoor enthusiasts who come to see fall colors by biking, hiking, or paddling. The best time to visit is during weekends in October when the Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival hosts food, crafts, and family fun amidst the autumn leaves. Stay in charming B&Bs housed in historical millionaire mansions, visit the Country Junction - World’s Largest General Store (seriously), and hop on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway for a gorge tour aboard a 100-year-old vintage diesel coach. For a rails-to-trails excursion, ride The Bike Train to
White Haven then cycle back at your own pace to Jim Thorpe on the D&L Rail Trail.
4. Honesdale
Known as the “Birthplace of the American Railroad,” the first steam locomotive on U.S. commercial tracks came to Honesdale in 1829. Today’s visitors ride these iconic rails on The Stourbridge Line’s Honesdale Express for vistas of the Lackawaxen River dressed in fall colors. Pop into town for fresh eats and full-on autumn adventures during early October’s Harvest and Heritage Days. Hayrides, pumpkin painting, chili taste-offs, and vendor shopping make it a weekend of old-fashioned fall fun. See changing colors up close on bike paths, waterways, and hiking trails in neighboring Prompton State Park.
5. Hawley
Set alongside sparkling Lake Wallenpaupack, Hawley features a downtown that shines again thanks to a recent restoration project that refreshed storefront facades. This Pocono Mountains town is a center for the farm-to-table dining scene, outdoor recreation, and arts, and its epicenter is the Mill Market at the Hawley Silk Mill. The market sources specialty eats, drinks, and crafts all from within 200 miles of Lake Wallenpaupack, and boasts an excellent beer garden. Get all the fall feels at the Hawley Harvest Hoedown, a Saturday celebration held in mid-October that includes cider and beer tastings, family activities, crafts, and live music. Use Hawley’s free in-town bike share to cruise from adventure to adventure without ever moving the car.
6. Milford
Milford has become a hub for art, film, and outdoor recreation that’s modeled after the big city streetscapes of Philadelphia. Find unexpected boutiques juxtaposed with looming Victorian mansions-turned-bed-and-breakfasts set along the wild Delaware River. Catch independent films amidst fall colors at Milford’s annual Black Bear Film Festival in October. Climb the Knob, a 400foot bluff that rises above one end of Broad Street and provides a scenic view of the city, or you can explore the neighboring Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area—a turn-of-the-century resort hot-spot that still beckons leaf-peeping adventurers today. For bird’s eye peak and river views, whizz above the varicolored treetops on one of the country’s largest zip lines at Kittatinny Canoes.

Hike to towering waterfalls, climb an ancient boulder field, and marvel at an old Wonder of the World in Poconos’ state parks. Their convenient location between Philadelphia and New York City make them a welcome respite for city dwellers, and recreation options on the water and trails offer near endless ways to explore. These eight Pennsylvania parks offer something for anyone who loves the outdoors.
1. Big Pocono State Park
Located on the summit of Camelback Mountain, Big Pocono State Park is known for its views. A scenic paved road encircles the mountain with sweeping vistas of Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey—it’s the perfect place for a summer picnic. Or stop for a bite at Camelback Mountain’s Kartrite’s Summit House restaurant. The park opens once the snow melts and the season runs through the end of deer hunting season in December; wandering the hiking trails is a neat way to see the mountain when it’s not bustling with skiers. Encompassing 1,306 acres, you have from sunrise to sunset to explore.

In the Victorian era, Delaware Water Gap became a booming resort town as city dwellers looked to escape the urban heat. They canoed, fished, and hiked—much like today’s vacationers—who still venture to the Gap as a breather from city life. The 70,000-acre park’s showpiece is the Water Gap itself, a distinct notch cut into Kittatinny Ridge by the Delaware River along the Pennsylvania-New Jersey state line. Once called a Wonder of the World, the Water Gap can best be seen from atop Mount Tammany in New Jersey. Hike the 1.2-mile Red Dot Trail to its terminus and take in the views like tourists of yesteryear. For vistas of the Gap from Mount Minsi, follow the white-blazed Appalachian Trail, where you’ll also see thru hikers making their trek from Georgia to Maine. Visitors to the Delaware Water Gap won’t want to miss the impressive waterfalls in the park. The three-tiered Raymondskill Falls is the tallest in the state, you can see it from two
Stand atop the rocky outcropping to look down at the falls, or follow an unmarked path through the woods to see them from below.

3. Beltzville State Park
Who says you need to drive to the shore to visit the beach? Beltzville State Park boasts a popular 525-foot sand beach along its reservoir for summer swimming and lounging. Tucked in the southern foothills of the Poconos near Lehighton, swimming is open from late-May to mid-September, and the beach boasts a bathhouse, showers, and concession stand. Bring the dog, too, as this park is pet-friendly. If you’re more of the angling sort, cast a line in Pohopoco Creek, which feeds Beltzville Lake, and reel in a trout. You can also go lake fishing, either from designated areas on shore or by boat. Back at the beach, see the relocated 1841 covered bridge that once spanned the creek for traveling horse and buggies. Saved by the urging of local residents, it’s now open only to pedestrians.
4. Hickory Run State Park
Geologists come from all over the world to the Poconos’ western foothills to study Hickory Run’s most famous site, Boulder Field, a flat, 18-acre bed of rocks that’s a National Natural Landmark. Likely formed by glacial movement and unchanged for nearly 20,000 years, this boulder field wows due to its absence of vegetation and sheer size. While visiting Hickory Run, don’t stop exploring at the Boulder Field. Follow a mostly downhill, 0.7-mile trail to Hawk Falls, a 25-foot cascading waterfall that’s easy enough for beginners and kids to walk.

viewing platforms—one near the head of the falls and one at a large step that divides the upper two drops from the lower. Note: Due to a severe winter storm in 2018, many of the trails in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area were closed due to the number of downed trees and other trail damage. Check the park’s website for an updated listing of when the trails will open.
Following the Lehigh River’s path from the Francis E. Walter Dam to the town of Jim Thorpe, this 6,107-acre park features a stunning steep-walled gorge and some of Pennsylvania’s most beautiful waterfalls. An easier walk leads to Buttermilk Falls, a 50-footer that cascades down a rocky ledge near the Lehigh Gorge Trail. This 20-plus mile riverside trail is built on an abandoned railroad grade and is popular with hikers and cyclists alike. While at the Gorge, don’t miss walking through Turn Hole Tunnel, an abandoned 1860s railroad tunnel that still has old railroad ties inside.
Pennsylvania’s Pocono Plateau is home to the Promised Land, which opened as the state’s fourth state park in 1905. The forests here were clear-cut throughout the 1800s, but when the lands were returned to Pennsylvania the state let the forest regrow and the wildlife returned. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built much of the park’s facilities and roads in the 1930s, and you can learn about the work done at the Masker Museum—one of the state’s largest CCC museums. Two sand beaches and lakes keep water lovers entertained on summer days, and aspiring anglers can learn to cast and catch with the family fishing program that includes loaner poles, bait, and tackle.
8. Tobyhanna State Park 6. Upper Delaware Recreational River
The last major undammed river in the East, the Upper Delaware’s clean waters are a delightful tubing, canoeing, rafting, and fishing destination. Categorized as Class I, the waters are playfully splashy but not too dicey. For anglers, the Upper Delaware is one of America’s best fishing rivers and is an excellent place to reel in brown and rainbow trout, small-mouth bass, and walleye. As the river winds down valley, see the remnants of historic villages and the nation’s oldest wire cable suspension bridge, Roebling Bridge. Walk or drive across and visit the Zane Grey Museum, or for an extra dose of the past, follow the old D & H Canal path. You’ll see how workers and mules once teamed up to transport goods to riverside towns.
Derived from an American Indian term meaning “a stream whose banks are fringed with alder,” this picturesque park features a 170-acre lake that’s a summer hot spot for boating, fishing, and swimming. Rent a boat on site every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day; choose from row boats, paddle boats, kayaks, canoes, and electric motor boats. When you tire of cruising and paddling, lay out a towel on the sandy beach or pitch a tent for overnight camping. Prefer to keep your feet on dry land? Follow the partially paved 5.1-mile Lakeside Trail on foot or bike to circle the whole lake.

MONROE Carnivores rejoice! We’ve scouted the best burgers to enjoy while working up an appetite in the Poconos. Caution; drooling mouths and growling stomachs have been reported while reading. From a grilled cheese, double cheese to a savory Bloody Mary topping, we’ve covered some of the best burgers you’ll eat in the Pocono Mountains. Read on for seven tasty burgers to get your hands on.
1. Trackside Station Grill & Bar
At Trackside Station Grill & Bar, prepare to enter burger heaven with the East Burger. Two eight-ounce Black Angus burgers hug a grilled cheese sandwich center. Layers of lettuce, tomato and beer battered onion rings accompany them on a pretzel roll. Served with house made honey mustard, your taste buds will thank you later.
2. The Frogtown Chophouse
While in the neighborhood, stop by The Frogtown Chophouse. With a name like that, it’s only right they serve the highest quality meats. The Chophouse Cheeseburger is a staple dish you can’t go wrong with. Seven-ounces of beef is covered with your choice of cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. Marry this classic with French fries and you’re set for a succulent meal.
3. Van Gilder’s Jubilee Restaurant
Choose from one of ten burgers at Jubilee Restaurant, and you can’t go wrong. Mini sliders and veggie patties are flavorful contenders with the rest of the beefy bunch. Want to max out on meat? The Jub’s Bloody Mary Man comes complete with a mini bacon burger garnish. Yes, we are being serious. Now you can enjoy a mini-burger on the side of your mega burger.
4. Guy Fieri’s Mount Pocono Kitchen
At Guy Fieri’s Mount Pocono Kitchen, all burgers are a half-pound of choice 100% American grass-fed beef, served with a seasoned fry trio and ketchup. If you emulate Guy Fieri then The Mayor of Flavor Town is for you. Hope you brought your appetite because this cheeseburger is piled high with house-smoked pastrami, swiss cheese, caraway coleslaw, dill pickles, sliced tomatoes, onion straws and Dijon mustard on a toasted pretzel bun. Yowzah!
5. Barley Creek Brewing Company
Build your own burger at Barley Creek Brewing Company. Whether Angus beef, turkey or chipotle black bean is your style, you can pick your preferences for a flawless meal. The Piggy Burger is topped with house-made pulled pork, thick-cut smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce. Pile that on your choice of brioche roll, onion poppy-seed roll, herb focaccia or sun-dried tomato wrap and you’re all set to enjoy with fries and a pickle.
6. B-Lux Grill & Bar
Known for their burgers, B-Lux Grill & Bar serves up half-pound beef cooked medium unless requested. All burgers are served with a choice of shoestring fries, waffle fries, or tater tots. Chow down on The Cheese Head; beer battered cheese curds, crispy bacon, shredded lettuce, tomato, onion and Wisconsin cheddar complete this cheddar-lovers dream. Grab one of their famed milkshake to wash everything down.
7. Friendly’s
A favorite everyone knows and loves, Friendly’s restaurant has appetizing cheeseburgers for all to enjoy. For a limited time only, you can order the new Bacon Avocado Burger. This mouthwatering burger is topped with melted cheddar cheese, applewood-smoked bacon, ripe avocado, garlic and herb mayo with lettuce and tomato. And of course, fries on the side. Get it while you can!

Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains have been welcoming skiers in droves since the 1950s, and today the region continues to attract urbanites, families, and avid outdoor lovers alike. Whether you’re a citydwelling newbie, an expert skier, or terrain parkobsessed teen, there’s a Pocono Mountains resort for you. Want to find out which mountain fits you best? Take a look and discover your match. For the NYC Dweller Looking for a Quick Ski Fix:
Shawnee Mountain Ski Area Tucked in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, just two hours from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, you’ll find Shawnee Mountain Ski Area. The mountain’s 23 trails boast a 700-foot vertical drop with snowmaking on every trail for great groomed skiing all season long. The family-friendly resort has terrain for everyone from beginners to experts. Teens looking to perfect their slides and grabs will love the mountain’s two terrain parks. Just 90 minutes from Philadelphia, Blue Mountain Resort boasts Pennsylvania’s biggest vertical drop, meaning fans of steeps will find plenty to love. Razor’s Edge, a 3,000foot black diamond, offers a challenge for skilled skiers, and there are plenty of moguls,
glades, and terrain parks to explore. But that doesn’t mean Blue is just for the pros. Thirtynine trails offer long runs spread over 16 lifts, and the region’s largest swath of beginner terrain allows newbies to gain confidence without getting in over their heads. Highspeed detachable lifts let you ski down and ride up fast so you can maximize your ski day. Prefer the night shift? Blue Mountain offers after-work riding on 30 lighted trails. Then it’s a quick jaunt to be back in the city—no overnight hotel stay required. For Beginners:
Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain is uniquely built with the base lodge at the top—so you can technically take your first run without riding a chairlift. Learning to ski or snowboard can be tough whether you’re five or 50, but Big Bear’s popular private lessons make it easier. Begin simply by learning how to put on your equipment, start and stop, and glide on the snow. From here you can progress to the lifts. Chairlifts can be
For Families:
Jack Frost Mountain Jack Frost/Big Boulder is not one resort, but two co-owned, separate ski areas that offer very different ski experiences. Jack Frost Mountain leans toward groomed skiing and family-friendly riding while Big Boulder caters to snowboarders and terrain park riders. The ease of terrain makes Jack Frost an ideal place for kids to learn, and tickets for tots under six are just $10. For fun, structured learning, enroll your little ones ages three to 12 in the SnowMonsters Program. These three-hour supervised sessions teach kids everything from chairlift riding to stopping and turning. Once they’ve got the basics,
let them practice in Jack Frost’s beginner area before stepping it up to Blue Square groomer cruiser runs. When it’s break time, find kid-friendly ski fare like chicken fingers, fries, and pizza in the main lodge at the top of the resort. For the Terrain Park Lover:
Big Boulder Ski Area Whether you’re mastering your McTwist or perfecting your box jumps, Big Boulder Ski Area is the place to take your riding to the next level. The resort’s known on the east coast for its freestyle terrain and snowboarding crowds, as well as being home to the Poconos’ largest terrain park system. Terrain parks cover 50 percent of the slopes, and features are built and rebuilt throughout the season. The Tannenbaum Park offers entrylevel rails, rollers, berms, and boxes where beginners can gain skills with less risk. For bigger rewards, step up to Love Park’s big jumps, tubes, and bars, or strut your stuff on Big Boulder Park’s giant jibs and the region’s biggest triple line.
For the Advanced Skier Looking for a Variety of Terrain:
Camelback Mountain Claiming the title of the Poconos’ largest ski resort, Camelback Mountain has plenty of space for all skill levels to roam, and it is less than two hours from both New York City and Philadelphia. With an 800-foot drop, Camelback spreads advanced runs across the width of the mountain. Snowmaking on 100 percent of Camelback’s 166 acres assures good coverage on the resort’s 38 trails, which are all lighted for night skiing. On powder days or holiday weekends, opt for the slower double and triple chairs to skip the lines and get straight to the fresh terrain. Black and double black diamond runs account for 35 percent of Camelback’s terrain, so you’ll have no trouble finding trails to challenge you. The mountain’s ski school is great for kids and other beginners in your group, and will give you some free time to explore the slopes on your own. If you can’t get enough of the snow, stay after dark for night skiing and Galactic Tubing.
