The COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedented event that affected us all in different ways. The Pocono Mountains, known as a peaceful escape from everyday life, was not immune to the struggles and challenges of the crisis. As a whole, our hospitality industry was shuttered for months. Yet, while the doors were closed, our resorts and attractions continued serving the community. Distilleries produced hand sanitizer and gave away thousands of bottles for free. Resorts organized food drives for furloughed employees and made large donations to local pantries. Restaurants delivered food to hospital staff, while ski resorts collected goggles for medical personnel to use as eye protection. The iconic Pocono Raceway even transformed its superspeedway into a stage for thousands of high school seniors so they could safely hold graduation ceremonies. Imagine driving down the same track as some of NASCAR’s greatest legends? While the good deeds continued, the Poconos’ hospitality industry looked forward to safely reopening for you, the guest. That’s why hundreds of businesses of all shapes and sizes have signed and adopted the Pocono Promise. The Pocono Promise is a voluntary set of guidelines that protect residents, visitors, and employees.

Those guidelines include aggressive cleaning protocols, health surveys for staff before starting their shift, special training, and using personal protective equipment when possible. In return, businesses ask employees and customers to follow certain guidelines as well, which include following social distancing protocols and staying home/visiting another time if feeling sick. Rest assured that hundreds of businesses throughout the Pocono Mountains are committed to ensuring your safety, even after the threat of COVID-19 has passed. Businesses not only embraced the initiative by displaying door signs and fliers at their properties, but some got creative. Wallenpaupack Brewing Company, for instance, created two limited-time beverages called Pocono Promise Porter and Pocono Promise Coffee Porter. Cheers to that! When visiting our waterparks, restaurants, shoppes, and other attractions, you’ll have a safe and fun experience in the Pocono Mountains. That’s our promise to you.

OUR PROMISE TO YOU • We maintain aggressive cleaning protocols throughout the facility by cleaning and sanitizing: - Common areas and high touch surfaces regularly. - Items and places used by other guests after every use. • We administer health surveys to all staff prior to their start of shift. • We adhere to social distancing guidelines established for our facility. • We provide readily available hand sanitizer or hand washing stations. • We train all our employees on the necessary measures that ensure the safety of our guests and staff. • We use masks and personal protective equipment. • We are available to speak with you directly about any questions or concerns you may have to make your experience the best it can be. • We will continue to give you the same level of service and hospitality you have come to expect, now enhanced through updated situational guidance.

YOUR PROMISE TO US • Patience is important for everyone during this time and we thank you in advance for exercising as much patience as you can in all situations. • Follow the guidance provided on the signs located in our facility outlining: - Social distancing - Practicing good hygiene - Wearing a mask when practical to do so • Stay home and plan another time to visit if you have been: - Experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough, or shortness of breath) - Recovering from or exposed to COVID19 within the last 14 days - Diagnosed with underlying health conditions - Concerned about contracting COVID-19

Known as the “Birthplace of the American Railroad,” Honesdale still takes to the tracks today. A robust history melds with the hip scene and popular activities. The tight-knit community with agricultural and industrial roots embodies the Poconos’ innovation and ambience. We sat down with former mayor Albert “Ab” Rutherford to talk all about the county seat of Wayne County. Q: Honesdale has transformed, and really come into its own. A: It had to. For survival, it had to reinvent itself. Main Street has become a home to boutiques, eateries, coffee shops and breweries. The farm-to-table opportunities and agricultural fairs right in our backyard is wonderful. There’s plenty of festivals and things to do throughout the year. The Roots and Rhythm event in the summer has turned into a real destination. People look forward to this and it has become quite a weekend. The train and Irving Cliff scenic overlook are also a major draw for guests. Q: The Stourbridge Line takes visitors throughout the area. A: The train excursions were resumed

about 30-35 years ago and run by the Chamber. They purchased a locomotive with five coaches, which still runs. Today, The Stourbridge Line runs train tours throughout the year. The scenery is beautiful and there are still parts of the old canal that can be seen on the train tours. During October on the fall foliage tours, the scenery is just fabulous. In the wintertime, it’s almost like a different trip. It’s well worth going in winter, and the cars are all heated. Q: But those excursion lines along the Lackawaxen aren’t the same tracks. A: Today’s tracks begin in Honesdale and run down through Hawley and Lackawaxen. When the D&H Canal was abandoned, they filled in the basin and tracks were laid to get the railroad into town in 1898. Q: What spawned Honesdale as it is today? A: Honesdale is here because of coal. Coal was discovered in the early 1800’s in nearby Carbondale. To get it into the markets, the D&H Canal was constructed from Honesdale 108 miles to New York on the Hudson River. They also built a gravity railroad, which ran from Carbondale to Honesdale and Honesdale became the nexus between the two points for transport. The coal was stored and shipped here up until 1898. Today’s office in the Wayne County Historical Society & Museum was the base of operations and office for the

D&H Canal Company, which is the oldest part of the building. We became the Birthplace of American Railroad thanks to the D&H Canal. The civil engineer for the Canal submitted plans for steam locomotion, which was unknown in America at the time. Engineers worked together to visit England to witness and purchase steam locomotives. The Stourbridge Lion arrived in New York City from England in the early spring of 1829, was reassembled and shipped up the D&H Canal. The first commercial run on the tracks was in Honesdale in August 1829. A 1920’s full size replica sits in the Wayne County Historical Society & Museum today as its showpiece. Q: What was it like growing up in Honesdale? A: It was fun. There was a great sense of community and it was very peaceful. The area is known as an agricultural community, and back then the saying was we had more cows than people. The geography hasn’t changed that much, but Honesdale has. It will continue to change and get better. Learn more about Honesdale from Ab and watch the full-length interview on the Pocono Television Network (PTN.)

Nestled between the banks of the Delaware River Highlands and Port Jervis, New York lies the town of Milford; a warm, welcoming community that values its history and is hospitable to visitors. Timeless sophistication has bloomed cultural prominence among the natural grandeur, making Milford a must-visit. Mayor and owner of Hotel Fauchère, Sean Strub, describes the county seat; the best of small-town America, which people say is like living in a Norman Rockwell painting. Q: Why do people come to Milford? A: First, is the natural environment. One third of the county is state or federal park or game land, and with that comes hiking and waterfalls. Guests come just for waterfall tours and river activities, which are just two blocks from downtown. The second reason is the heritage attractions. We are a National Historic District and have museums like Grey Towers National Historic Site and the Columns Museum, which houses the blood-stained flag that cushioned

President Lincoln’s head moments after he was assassinated. And the third reason is the cultural vibrancy. Our festivals, galleries and shopping attract people as well. We treat everyone like neighbors. Q: More people are coming to hike with the proximity to the National Park. A: Hiking is the number one activity while guests are here. There are so many trails. We are the north gate to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Mott Street bridge was just reopened for pedestrians, which connects downtown directly to the recreation area. You can also hike from here to Raymondskill Falls, which is three miles from downtown and is the tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania. Q: Describe where Milford is situated. A: Less than 75 miles from the Lincoln Tunnel is a community that has long been a resort and summer destination. During the mid-19th century, the emerging railroad spurs brought visitors to a nearby town when a resort class was emerging. Milford became a vacation destination, and during the Gilded Age, it was like the Hamptons of its day. In recent years, a lot of that luster has returned. Q: And there’s a lot of history in this borough. A: The borough was laid out in the late 18th century in a grid pattern modelled

after Philadelphia. Milford took off after the American Revolution when it became a destination for French colonies from New York. Fine dining was introduced to America around this time by the Delmonico Brothers in New York City. Louis Fauchère was their master chef and he brought this to the Hotel Fauchère. Today, Hotel Fauchère is one of the oldest continuous culinary family legacies in the country, and we try to maintain the culinary innovation. Q: Describe Gifford Pinchot’s legacy and how that movement has lasted. A: The Pinchot family built Grey Towers as a summer home, and Gifford’s father recommended he study forestry. Gifford introduced the idea of sustainable harvesting of natural resources used for the greatest good in America, became the first head of the U.S. Forest Service created by Teddy Roosevelt and is referred to as the “Father of the Conservation Movement” by President Kennedy. The American Forestry Association was founded here in Milford, the birthplace of the Conservation Movement. Grey Towers is now a National Historic Site; we’re proud to have this here and its significant driver of visitation to the area as well.

PIKE

With roots dating back to the early 1800’s, the Poconos is rich in history. Previously consumed with tourism, coal mining and conservation, the local past is one of robust antiquity. Whether coming to see America’s first commercial locomotive train or the infamous Lincoln Flag, there’s a ton of history to be discovered. Read on for eight museums to visit across the region.

This 18-room, Victorian-style mansion has been preserved in all its glory and can be toured seven days a week from Memorial Day to October 31.

2. Columns Museum 1. Asa Packer Mansion

Located in historic Jim Thorpe, the Asa Packer Mansion was built in 1861 for multi-millionaire Asa Packer. He moved to town during the booming coal mining industry, founded the local railroad and university and made significant contributions to the community.

28

PoconoMountains.com

The Columns Museum is home to the Pike County Historical Society in downtown Milford. Here, area artifacts from the early 1900’s are on display; tour times vary throughout the year. One of the most notable exhibits is the Lincoln Flag, which has remained a key component of our nation’s past. The museum also has genealogy records available for those in search of their own history.

For more on all of the museums in the Pocono Mountains, visit

PIKE 3. Dorflinger Glass Museum

Nestled into the wooded forests of the Poconos, the Dorflinger Glass Museum is home to one of the nation’s largest displays of Dorflinger Crystal. Starting in the 1860’s, Christian Dorflinger produced the finest glassware here where some pieces were distinguished enough to reside in the White House. Several exhibits display over 1,000 pieces of crystal throughout the museum. Tours are available Wednesday through Sunday May until October.

5. Old Jail Museum

Another gem in downtown Jim Thorpe, the Old Jail Museum is a must-see. From its creation in 1871, the jail was in operation until 1995. Its claim to fame is the hanging of the notorious Molly Maguires, miners and Cell 17; a handprint of a prisoner who proclaimed his innocence has eerily remained on the wall for hundreds of years. Rumored supernatural activity occurs at the jail when you least expect it. Come experience a late-night ghost tour in the fall or visit every day except Wednesdays Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day.

4. Grey Towers National Historic Landmark

Perched on top of 100, secluded acres sits Grey Towers National Historic Landmark. Built in 1886 in Milford as a summer retreat for the Pinchot family, Grey Towers later became son Gifford Pinchot’s permanent residence. With a true love for the environment, Gifford introduced conservation to the country and founded the United States Forest Service. Since donated to the US Forest Service and established as a national landmark, mansion tours are available Thursday through Monday Memorial Day Weekend until December.

6. Pocono Indian Museum

The Pocono Indian Museum is the only museum in the region that showcases the history of the native Delaware Indian. The museum features ancient artifacts, weapons, and tools, dating as far back as 10,500 BC, that the Indians weaved into the framework of their culture over thousands of years. Open year-round besides Thanksgiving and Christmas, the museum also features a large gift shop full of both traditional and non-traditional treasures.

7. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm

Step back in time to experience life on the farm. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is a live-action museum preserving the 19th century Pennsylvania German heritage that founded the farm. Period-dressed “family” members re-enact the life of the original family who lived here from the 1760’s to 1913. Live agriculture demonstrations and events occur throughout the year as well as special holiday festivities. The farm is open for tours Tuesday through Sunday April until Labor Day.

8. Wayne County Historical Society & Museum While in Honesdale, it pays to stop at the Wayne County Historical Society & Museum. Known as the birthplace of the American railroad, the Poconos has long ties to the train-era. Here a replica of The Stourbridge Lion, the country’s first locomotive, is permanently on display. The museum also features histories relevant to the region with displays like Native American artifacts and Dorflinger crystal. Events take place at historical locations off-site throughout the county as well. Stop by Wednesday through Saturday and select Sundays. PoconoMountains.com

PIKE For an autumn adventure set ablaze in brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows, escape the city and venture to the Pocono Mountains for spectacular color paired with small-town charm. Home to more than 120 varieties of trees, shrubs, and plants, the Poconos’ diverse vegetation adds to its fall palette, and three distinct color zones let you catch autumn’s peak all season long in these six charming Poconos’ towns.

1. Stroudsburg

Strollable Stroudsburg mixes old Americana flair with a young college town vibe. Whether you’re craving pub fare, Thai, or French cuisine, you’ll find it in Stroudsburg—typically partnered with craft beers and creative cocktails. See fall colors best on a leisurely woodland amble or bike ride along Brodhead Creek’s gravel path. Find tougher riverside trekking in the neighboring Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

2. Delaware Water Gap

The town of Delaware Water Gap is nestled into the national recreation area, where you can hike a section of the Appalachian Trail to get an up-close view of the autumn scenery. The Mount Minsi Trail follows the AT’s white blazes to summit the peak for a stunning overlook of red, yellow, and orange changing leaves. Back in town, enjoy a great meal or catch a weekend jazz performance at the Deer Head Inn.

3. Jim Thorpe

Once called the “Switzerland of America,” the Victorian town of Jim Thorpe did not always bear this former Olympian’s name. Back in its anthracite coal days, Jim Thorpe went by the name of Mauch Chunk—Lenape for Mountain of the Sleeping Bear—and was second only to Niagara Falls as a tourist destination. Today, the town’s popular with outdoor enthusiasts who come to see fall colors by biking, hiking, or paddling. The best time to visit is during weekends in October when the Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival hosts food, crafts, and family fun amidst the autumn leaves. Stay in charming B&Bs housed in historical millionaire mansions, visit the Country Junction - World’s Largest General Store (seriously), and hop on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway for a gorge tour aboard a 100-year-old vintage diesel coach. For a rails-to-trails excursion, ride The Bike Train to

White Haven then cycle back at your own pace to Jim Thorpe on the D&L Rail Trail.

4. Honesdale

Known as the “Birthplace of the American Railroad,” the first steam locomotive on U.S. commercial tracks came to Honesdale in 1829. Today’s visitors ride these iconic rails on The Stourbridge Line’s Honesdale Express for vistas of the Lackawaxen River dressed in fall colors. Pop into town for fresh eats and full-on autumn adventures during early October’s Harvest and Heritage Days. Hayrides, pumpkin painting, chili taste-offs, and vendor shopping make it a weekend of old-fashioned fall fun. See changing colors up close on bike paths, waterways, and hiking trails in neighboring Prompton State Park.

5. Hawley

Set alongside sparkling Lake Wallenpaupack, Hawley features a downtown that shines again thanks to a restoration project that refreshed storefront facades. This Pocono Mountains town is a center for the farm-to-table dining scene, outdoor recreation, and the arts. The Hawley Silk Mill is the epicenter of town, and sources specialty shops, eats, drinks, and crafts all from within 200 miles of Lake Wallenpaupack. Located on the Mill grounds, Cocoon Coffeehouse & Bakery features sustainable food and drink including local beer and wine. Get all the fall feels at the Hawley Harvest Hoedown, a Saturday celebration held in mid-October that includes cider and beer tastings, family activities, crafts, and live music. Use Hawley’s free in-town bike share to cruise from adventure to adventure without ever moving the car.

6. Milford

Milford has become a hub for art, film, and outdoor recreation that’s modeled after the big city streetscapes of Philadelphia. Find unexpected boutiques juxtaposed with looming Victorian mansions-turned-bed-and-breakfasts set along the wild Delaware River. Catch independent films amidst fall colors at Milford’s annual Black Bear Film Festival in October. Climb the Knob, a 400foot bluff that rises above one end of Broad Street and provides a scenic view of the city, or you can explore the neighboring Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area—a turn-of-the-century resort hot-spot that still beckons leaf-peeping adventurers today. For bird’s eye peak and river views, whizz above the varicolored treetops on one of the country’s largest zip lines at Kittatinny Canoes.

MONROE

Stroudsburg, the county seat of Monroe County, has something for everyone on Main Street. From shops and shows to restaurants and wineries, the historic allure radiates throughout the downtown. Quintessential architecture towers over the streets adorned with seasonal decorations, flower planters and vivid murals. A past top ten favorite snow town in Country Living Magazine, the charm speaks for itself. We interviewed a local expert on the borough, none other than Stroudsburg’s mayor, Tarah Probst. Q: Is Stroudsburg a great place for people to visit? A: Yes, we’re big with tourism. There’s nothing better than having someone from New York or Philadelphia say, “we love it here, we want to live here.” The proximity is great, and Stroudsburg is a beautiful, walkable downtown with unique shops and restaurants. From Thai and Portuguese to French, you name it we have it. We also

have five art galleries, and numerous wineries, breweries, shops and cafes. Anything you need you can find in our borough; and there’s more to come. Q: And there’s a lot of festivals and something going on in Stroudsburg that’s family friendly. A: The Sherman Theater is a huge help with that. They bring in great acts and shows multiple times a month all while keeping true to the historic theater it is. There’s also many different events and festivals downtown during the year. Winterfest is a huge event as is Halloween on Main. There’s also a massive St. Patrick’s Day parade, and a gigantic Christmas Tree Lighting that are popular as well. Q: Tell us about Stroudsburg’s history. A: The first settlers were here in the early 1700’s. Jacob Stroud, the founder of Stroudsburg, moved here with his family in the late 1700’s. He had Daniel, his second oldest son, come live in [what’s known today as] Stroud Mansion to help him build the town. Stroudsburg was officially incorporated February 5, 1815. Q: People can still see a lot of those historic structures downtown today. A: There are many beautiful buildings still here and it seems like back then people took pride in what they did and built, and

they were built to last. The Stroud Mansion is one of them. There’s also the J.J. Newberry, which was a chain of department stores founded right here in Stroudsburg in 1911; it’s now a winery. Around Courthouse Square, the buildings are all original. It’s just a lovely, charming town. Q: At any point did Stroudsburg undergo a revitalization? A: As the county seat, this is where all the business took place. Prior to strip malls, every bit of shopping was done on this Main Street. You go through periods, but we’re better than ever over the last 20 years. The town is resilient and beautiful, and we are constantly reinventing ourselves while keeping the historic charm. Building and restoration projects are going on, and environmental initiatives like solar trash cans are continuing to grow. We’re just making sure our town always has the historic presence and preservation while moving forward to the future. What we’ve done over the last four years and what we plan to do, it’s going to be amazing for our town, our residents and our visitors.

Whether trying new brews in the tasting room or getting a growler to-go of your favorite beer, Pocono Mountains breweries got it going on. Local ingredients are infused to make distinct drinks throughout the destination. Treat your taste buds to a delicious handcrafted beer. From hoppy IPAs to bright lagers and everything in between, our breweries have a wide range of beers to quench your thirst. Find your new favorite at one of our seven breweries in the Poconos.

Barley Creek Brewing Company

The Poconos original brewpub, Barley Creek Brewing Company, has been brewing for over two decades. They brew their tap beers right on site and are served through their glycol chilled tap system. You can also order from their food menu. They offer daily brewery tours and can accommodate a special tour for groups with advanced notice.

Here & Now Brewing Company

Located on Main Street in Honesdale, Here & Now Brewing Company is inspired by the area’s seasons and resources, which are utilized in crafting their beers and food. They run a rotating tap list where some of their brews change regularly. They also create new menu dishes for guests to enjoy as well.

Jam Room Brewing Company

Jam Room Brewing Company is “pouring the soundtrack to our lives. We live it. We brew it.” A group of friends with a passion for beer and music married the two into a one-of-a-kind business. The cleverly named brews will sound familiar, and taste even better from the local ingredients made to craft them.

Mountain View Brewing Company Whether you prefer drinking by the glass or growler, Mountain View Brewing Company has the brew for you. Their housemade beers feature different bodies with sustainable elements. And when you’re hungry, grab a bite to eat from their onsite bistro. Stop by on Fridays for halfprice growler fills!

Pocono Brewery Company

You won’t go thirsty or hungry at Pocono Brewery Company. Their craft beers are brewed on-site and are featured on tap alongside happy hour specials. Their brews can be purchased in a growler or six-pack to-go. PBC boasts its homemade wood-fired pizza and Italian fare in addition to classic pub favorites.

ShawneeCraft Brewing Company

“True to nature, true to the craft” is ShawneeCraft Brewing Company’s motto, which shows through their innovation and creation. The Tap Room serves up to ten craft beers on tap in addition to their canned beers, and pizza, pretzels and garlic knots to munch on. Catch live music in the Tap Room Wednesday through Saturday.

Wallenpaupack Brewing Company Just off the shores of Lake Wallenpaupack sits a brewery that’s been making waves in the industry. Wallenpaupack Brewing Company features dynamic craft beer with unique tastes brewed on-site. A robust food menu is available that includes locally sourced flavors and ingredients, and they even host a brunch menu.

Dinner and a movie is always a safe bet for date night, but what about something out of the ordinary? Say goodbye to your routine on your next romantic rendezvous. Whether catching a breathtaking sunset by air or reigniting your romance under earth, we’ve got unique ways for couples to appreciate one another. Read on for five romantic activities to experience with the love of your life in the Poconos.

1. Sunset Air Tour

If you’ve never been in a plane, now’s your chance. Moyer Aviation provides year-round air tours of the Poconos; a sight you’ve got to see. Take an aerial ride with your honey and be captivated by the region’s beauty in a whole new perspective. Choose from mapped out trips or customize your own. Ride off into the sunset together, and maybe even pop the question to commemorate this romantic experience together.

2. Spa Getaway

You can never go wrong with a day at the spa, especially at an award-winning location. The Lodge at Woodloch is a world-class destination spa that offers luxurious experiences for couples. At an adults-only paradise, you and your sweetheart will relax among scenic beauty and serenity. Pick from seasonal treatments, couples’ massages or retreat packages. Book an overnight stay and enjoy the finest arrangements on your getaway.

3. The Underground Experience

New this year, Blue Ridge Winery invites intimacy and allure to their Underground Experience. Encounter all things love, gratitude and trust from the ground up. Literally. Travel 14-feet underground into an exclusive, sleek room lit from a tree-root chandelier. Here duos will sit across from their dates and hear stories pairing wine and food with inspira-

tion and admiration. With an event invoking powerful emotions, may you value yourselves a little more each day.

4. Cooking Classes

Interested in learning something together? Give the cooking class in The Boiler Room at the Hawley Silk Mill a go. These interactive classes are offered the second Sunday of the month. Each class showcases a different dish and the techniques to take with you. Have some fun as one while learning culinary tricks during these hands-on demonstrations. Most of the classes pair adult beverages with the menu, too.

5. Hike and Picnic

Opt outside to enjoy each other’s company during a hike and picnic. Explore the paths at Pocono Mountains’ parks and pack a lunch to have along the way. Parks like Hickory Run State Park feature tumbling waterfalls along their hiking trails. After walking the trails, set up for a nice picnic lunch. Many parks also have picnic areas, or you can stop and make your own spot in a pretty part in the park. This is only the beginning on a romantic getaway; plan your honeymoon in the former “Honeymoon Capital of the World”. Check out romantic stays and packages available across the region. The Poconos even has adults only accommodations for couples looking for extra solitude. And yes, we still have our beloved heart-shaped tubs. Make the most of your time here and discover all things to do, fine dining and events while visiting.

MONROE

The Pocono Mountains has been welcoming skiers in droves since the 1950s, and today the region continues to attract families and avid outdoor lovers alike. Whether you’re a city-dwelling newbie, an expert skier, or terrain park-obsessed teen, there’s a Pocono Mountains resort for you. Want to find out which mountain fits you best? Discover your match!

Big Boulder Ski Area

Whether you’re mastering your McTwist or perfecting your box jumps, Big Boulder Ski Area is the place to take your riding to the next level. The resort’s known on the east coast for its freestyle terrain and snowboarding crowds, as well as being home to the Poconos’ largest terrain park system. Terrain parks make up nearly 70 percent of the slopes, and features are built and rebuilt throughout the season. The Tannenbaum Park offers entry-level rails, rollers, berms, and boxes where beginners can gain skills with less risk. For bigger rewards, step up to Love Park’s big jumps, tubes, and bars, or strut your stuff on Big Boulder Park’s giant jibs and the region’s biggest triple line.

Blue Mountain Resort For more on Ski Resorts in the Pocono Mountains, visit:

PoconoSki.com

PoconoMountains.com

Just 90 minutes from Philadelphia, Blue Mountain Resort boasts Pennsylvania’s biggest vertical drop, meaning fans of steeps will find plenty to love. Razor’s Edge, a 3,000-foot black diamond, offers a challenge for skilled skiers, and there are plenty

of moguls, glades, and terrain parks to explore. But that doesn’t mean Blue is just for the pros. 40 trails offer long runs spread over 16 lifts, and the region’s largest swath of beginner terrain allows newbies to gain confidence without getting in over their heads. Highspeed detachable lifts let you ski down and ride up fast so you can maximize your ski day. Prefer the night shift? Blue Mountain offers after-work riding on 30 lighted trails. Then it’s a quick jaunt to be back in the city—no overnight hotel stay required.

Camelback Mountain

Claiming the title of the Poconos’ largest ski resort, Camelback Mountain has plenty of space for all skill levels to roam, and it is less than two hours from both New York City and Philadelphia. With an 800-foot drop, Camelback spreads advanced runs across the width of the mountain. Snowmaking on 100 percent of Camelback’s 166 acres assures good coverage on the resort’s 39 trails, which are all lighted for night skiing. On powder days or holiday weekends, opt for the slower double and triple chairs to skip the lines and get straight to the fresh terrain. Black and double black diamond runs account for 35 percent of Camelback’s

Jack Frost Mountain

Jack Frost/Big Boulder is not one resort, but two co-owned, separate ski areas that offer very different ski experiences. Jack Frost Mountain leans toward groomed skiing and family-friendly riding while Big Boulder caters to snowboarders and terrain park riders. The ease of terrain makes Jack Frost an ideal place for kids to learn, and tickets for tots under six are just $10. For fun, structured learning, enroll your little one’s ages three to 12 in the SnowMonsters Program. These three-hour supervised sessions teach kids everything from chairlift riding to stopping and turning. Once they’ve got the basics, let them practice in Jack Frost’s beginner area before stepping it up to Blue Square groomer

cruiser runs. When it’s break time, find kid-friendly ski fare like chicken fingers, fries, and pizza in the main lodge at the top of the resort.

Shawnee Mountain Ski Area

Tucked in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, just two hours from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, you’ll find Shawnee Mountain Ski Area. The mountain’s 23 trails boast a 700-foot vertical drop with snowmaking on every trail for great groomed skiing all season long. The family-friendly resort has terrain for everyone from beginners to experts, and teens looking to perfect their slides and grabs will love the mountain’s two terrain parks. When the sun sets, keep skiing on the lighted slopes or take a slide on the six tubing hills that are open into the night.

Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain

Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain is uniquely built with the base lodge at the top—so you can technically take your first

run without riding a chairlift. Learning to ski or snowboard can be tough whether you’re five or 50, but Big Bear’s popular private lessons make it easier. Begin simply by learning how to put on your equipment, start and stop, and glide on the snow. From here you can progress to the lifts. Chairlifts can be intimidating for first timers, so at Big Bear you’ll start with a ride on the Magic Carpet surface lift to reach the top without your feet leave the ground. Ski to the bottom of Snowbird Trail then ride the sliding sidewalk back to the top. As you progress, take the easier Little Bear Chair before moving onto more advanced trails. Big Bear’s variety of terrain allows you to gain confidence on easier trails while more experienced friends take on advanced runs. All Pocono Mountains ski resorts also offer both snowboarding and snow tubing, so everyone can have fun on the mountain! Check out our area’s snow conditions to get live updates of the elements on your way here. You don’t want to miss winter in the Poconos, so we’ll see you on the slopes.

terrain, so you’ll have no trouble finding trails to challenge you. The mountain’s ski school is great for kids and other beginner’s in your group and will give you some free time to explore the slopes on your own. If you can’t get enough of the snow, stay after dark for night skiing and Galactic Tubing.

CARBON

With a 200-year history, Jim Thorpe is rightfully the county seat of Carbon County. Located in the Lehigh Gorge, the scenery you just can’t recreate. It’s beautiful. And when you walk up Broadway Street downtown, it could be 2020 or 1820. It’s just the feeling you get, and it’s something that just happened and has been preserved.

bridge that brings you from the D&L Trail in the Lehigh Gorge right into downtown. We’re also 20 minutes from three great ski resorts. You can stay at a quaint Victorian inn, experience all Jim Thorpe has to offer and then tomorrow go skiing at some of the best skiing in the Poconos. While visiting, touring the Asa Packer Mansion is one of the things you want to do. Also, touring the Old Jail Museum with the handprint. Before the Molly Maguires were hung, one man put his handprint on the wall saying, “this will stay here as a sign of my innocence” and you can still see that handprint today. Just get out and enjoy everything there is to offer here.

Whether experiencing outdoor recreation in the Gorge or enjoying the town’s shops and eateries, Jim Thorpe is unique and that’s why so many people come back. We sat down with State Representative and Carbon County local Doyle Heffley to talk about Jim Thorpe.

Q: Originally known as Mauch Chunk, tell us about the history of the town. A: Mauch Chunk was founded in 1818 and was named by the native Lenape Indians meaning “sleeping bear.” Coal was big in the area and was transported to the markets in Philadelphia at the start of the Industrial Revolution.

Q: What do you think about Jim Thorpe today? A: There’s just so much you can do. You can ride a bike, go whitewater rafting, hike the trails or just walk around the shops, and there are some great restaurants downtown. We now have the new pedestrian

When the economy shifted away from coal, Mauch Chunk was struggling. In 1954, a local sportswriter was contacted by Jim Thorpe’s wife who proposed to bring his body here. Today’s mausoleum was built, and the town unanimously voted for renaming the borough to Jim Thorpe. Arguably the

greatest athlete of all time, Jim Thorpe was a tremendous athlete and Olympian who pioneered today’s sports. Q: And we see that one great picture of him wearing mismatched shoes and socks, then he went on to win gold medals in the 1912 Olympics. It shows he overcame adversity; kind of says a lot about the town of Jim Thorpe too. A: It really does. Where the town was to where it is now shows how Jim Thorpe reinvented themselves and moved forward. Q: Did Jim Thorpe go through a revitalization? A: In the 1970’s they became one of the first towns to enroll with the National Register of Historic Places. In the early 80’s, buildings started to be refurbished. The town is built on top of a creek and would flood every spring; you can see the creek flowing underneath buildings today. They built the Mauch Chunk Watershed, which stopped the flooding and people continued to make investments downtown, bringing the town back to life. There have always been a lot of opportunities, and I think it will continue to grow. To reach it, follow a steep, uneven 0.3-mile trail to reach two epic cascades in this scenic viewing areas, one above the falls and one the middle. A pool separates the top two region of the state. 2. Dingmans Falls

Pennsylvania’s second tallest waterfall, Dingmans Falls is found in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and is easy to reach and free to visit. Follow an easy, accessible boardwalk trail past lush rhododendrons and a canopy of hemlock trees that ends at a handicap accessible viewing platform. Follow a staircase .1-mile up for a vista of this cascading 130-footer from above.

3. Silverthread Falls

Impressive 80-foot Silverthread Falls flows through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. See two waterfalls along the trail! The same boardwalk trail leading to Dingmans Falls passes by Silverthread Falls at the park’s entrance. This nice, easy walk has stunning sights throughout the recreation area.

Trail. This forested route was once used by wagons traveling from the town of Jim Thorpe and is thick with rhododendrons in summer. As you near the falls, cross a wooden bridge over Hickory Run. Continue downhill to a rocky area off the trail to see Hawk Falls. Hike to the bottom for another view, or to take a dip in the cool, refreshing water.

6. Luke’s Falls

After checking out Buttermilk Falls, continue back downstream past the parking area for .3 miles to Luke’s Falls. Stop on the bridge for a great view of this 50-foot fall descending a series of drops. Because of the thick vegetation, this cascade can be tougher to see in the summer, but you’ll find excellent views in winter and early spring. For those averse to long hikes, Buttermilk Falls and Luke’s Falls offer quick access from easy-to-navigate trails.

9. Tanners Falls

Find Tanners Falls in the State Game Lands north of Honesdale. The two-tiered cascade runs for about 20 feet before emptying into a wide, rocky pool. Above the falls, an old bridge crosses Dyberry Creek. The wood, stone and metal structure is no longer open to motorists, but hikers can cross it to look at the falls.

4. Bushkill Falls

Nicknamed the “The Niagara of Pennsylvania,” Bushkill Falls is a group of eight natural waterfalls inside a 300-acre privately owned park neighboring the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Pay an entrance fee to explore the park’s two scenic miles of trails, boardwalks, and bridges. Follow the trails to the Main Falls, which cascade down 100 feet into a gorge below surrounded by ferns, moss, and wildflowers. The falls trails are welcoming to families, but the walks require some stair climbs due to the 300-foot drop from the first falls to the lower gorge.

7. Shohola Falls

Thundering down the State Game Lands off Route 6 you’ll find this stunning, roaring waterfall along Shohola Creek below Shohola Lake. To get there, follow a lesser-visited 0.8-mile loop trail through the marshlands to one of the Poconos’ most impressive and underrated waterfalls. The sheer volume of water flowing from this lake-fed fall is impressive year-round, and the dam above it seems to play little role in how fast and fierce it’s flowing. The best views are found from a ledge in front of the falls, but you can also see it safely from both sides of the creek and at stone observation areas on the west side.

10. Paupack Falls

An architectural gem in the Pocono Mountains, the Ledges Hotel overlooks a series of natural waterfalls; Paupack Falls. Its multiple decks provide superior vantage points, but it’s important to note they’re for guests only. Why not book a room with a view, or check out the onsite restaurant?

5. Buttermilk Falls

See two waterfalls on this easy walk along the Lehigh Gorge Trail in the Lehigh Gorge State Park—just upstream from the Rockport Access Area in Jim Thorpe. First up is Buttermilk Falls, a 50-footer that cascades down a rocky ledge surrounded by lush vegetation. Park in the small lot and follow a .3-mile path across a bridge to get a wide-open view of the falls.

8. Hawk Falls

The western Poconos’ Hickory Run State Park is home to the rushing waters of 25-foot Hawk Falls. To get there, park in the lot on Route 534 and take the 0.6-mile Hawk Falls
