‘Changing gender sparked my psychic gifts’ says medium A MEDIUM who transitioned from a male to a female has explained that her psychic gifts blossomed only after she made the change. “Meet the borough’s trans medium,” announced the Ilford Recorder on its front page, which sent reporter Ellena Cruse to see one of Rebecca “Becs” Sawyer’s demonstrations and interview her. Ellena started her account: “Despite the remnants of a glorious day outside, I sit in a packed room with around a hundred other people, eyes facing forward. “The only exception to the mass stillness and silence is a woman sitting behind me. As gentle tears roll down her face, she whispers, ‘Thank you.’ “Before you think I have run away and joined a cult or decided to audition as an extra in a futuristic dystopian movie, I need to come clean and reveal that I am relatively safe and have come to watch a show by medium Rebecca ‘Becs’ Sawyer, who grew up in Ilford. “If every medium has a back story, then Becs has a seven-part series and she claims that her gift only manifested after she changed sex from a man to woman. “A former 6ft 2in martial arts trainer, who was bullied at school, she said it was only when she was true to herself that she could feel spirits.” Becs said that she “always had a passion” for the subject, “but nothing really developed much until I went through my own emotional and physical transition, then the spiritual stuff opened up. “I came across some brilliant tutors and mentors who helped me. We all have the ability – it is not a superpower. I don’t think unless I went through the transition it would have happened.” Ellena added, “Just like living people, Becs said spirits of the dead all have different energies and personalities, and she doesn’t like all of them.” The medium explained that some spirit beings “have an issue with the trans stuff, and I think, ‘Oh go away, get out of my head’.” Becs told the reporter that “all mediums have to heal themselves before the spiritual side can manifest and her abilities didn’t happen overnight. She said everyone is on a journey and she has only scraped the surface with her talent and is a ‘work in progress’.” Back to Becs, who commented: “Spirits haven’t got a voice box. They have to use

my memories and feelings to communicate – we come together. “My job is to get my brain out of the way, so they can do their job and I can narrate their story. It is all about trying to give them a voice.” During the demonstration, Becs made contact with “a grumpy Nan, a suicide victim and someone who was shot dead by a group of boys. She spends time tracking the right person in the room to deliver the message to.” The medium told those present, “If it doesn’t fit, I am not going to make it fit. I can only pass on what I pick up. I am a mobile phone mast.” Ellena wrote that during a two-hour demonstration, “the messages Becs received from the Other Side vary in their subject. While one wanted to let his family know he was safe, another one wanted to pass on messages of love. “Even the most cynical audience member could see that people were getting an enormous rush of comfort from the messages. “Becs had the knack of fluidly and sensitively turning the mood from serious to making the room laugh with her witty observations.” “I am trying to show people that love and life are eternal,” said Becs. “Every culture talks about consciousness, a soul, a spirit. “You can’t change the physical pain people go through, but I can give comfort. I can give them a life reunion. “I am not the right medium for everyone. I don’t go it all love and light. Not every relationship was wonderful, but I can help them heal; they deserve to be healed. That’s the joy of my job – that a relationship continues.” Becs, 58, was also featured in two national papers, one of which described her previous life “as an eighteen-stone bodybuilding bloke. Now she is a full-time medium chatting to ghosts. Becs married wife Nicky, 43, in 2007, and the pair have stayed together.” (Photo: Facebook)

The medium told the Daily Star: “I do meet some homophobic spirits who don’t agree with me, but I don’t take it personally. “It’s about me expressing the person’s personality and character even if they don’t agree with me. Spirits will tell me what they think of me, so they can validate who they are. “If a dad is homophobic he won’t lie about his homophobia otherwise his relatives won’t recognise him. I never want to change or filter what the spirits want to say.” Metro reported that Becs underwent “complete reassignment surgery,” which was “a long process with incredible highs and incredible lows, but at least now society has moved on I’m not the only trans in the village!” Becs called her wife Nicky a “rock,” adding: “She’s incredibly intuitive, like a real earth angel. We support each other in everything we want to do and she helped so much during my transition. “After I came out as trans she didn’t care. She loves me as a person. It wasn’t about gay or straight, just about who I love. “We’re actually quite boring, though. Our idea of a good night is being in bed together each watching our Netflix programmes while holding hands.” n
