The History of the Magic Castle and Its Magicians Makayla Carpinteyro The Magic Castle was founded by Milt Larson and his brother Bill Larson in the early 1960s. The building used to be a house and an apartment before it became the Magic Castle. The building is over 100 years old and is a famous place in Los Angeles.

A Hidden Jewel Katherine Torres When talking about the landmarks in Los Angeles, people usually think of places like Disneyland, Universal Studios, the Hollywood sign, Dodger Stadium, maybe even UCLA. But they rarely think of a jewel hidden somewhere near the mountains in Pasadena, CA. It is a place where future scientists and engineers study math, computer sciences, and astrophysics get ready for earth-observing missions, planetary exploration, and protecting our country. This place where amazing things happen is called California Institute of Technology, or CalTech. CalTech is one of the smallest and best colleges in the world. With only 2,000 students a year, Caltech has won 34 nobel prizes and 71 United States National Medals of Science and Technology, according to its website. You might think a school, which raises geniuses like that is boring, but you would be surprised. CalTech has interesting traditions, some of which are like in the Harry Potter books. Peggy Otsubo graduated from CalTech in 1975 in the second class of women and currently has a daughter in CalTech.

into eight houses, kind of like the sorting hat.” When you join a house, you become a member of that community. The houses have sit-down dinners served with waiters. “When somebody would not show up for dinner, and we would all go, ‘Oh is this person OK? We better go check on him.’ So it is like a nice community. This is unique to the undergrads.” Peggy explained what some competitions are like between the houses.“So they have athletic competitions but you kind of make up your rules. When I was in Page we had a couple of athletic girls so we would say, ‘Ok, we want to play some volleyball,’ which required girls so we would challenge another house and the house that has the most points at the end of the year would be able to have the trophy in their house. You don’t really get anything for it. You don’t get any money, the trophy isn’t really that big of a deal, but it was fun. It was fun to let off some steam a little bit, and play sports. There is also other informal challenges between the houses and there are a couple more houses that have even more rivalry. A couple houses are connected and I remember they used to throw water balloons a quarter past the way. It is just fun games.”

“I worked as a computer programmer. I worked in the aerospace defense industry and I worked at several different companies increasing my computer programming skills and eventually went into more of a management position. So from a direct map you would be surprised at the number of places who really like a math major,” Otsubo said.

There is one important tradition that Otsubo mentioned. “One that I will mention is the honor system. It’s very, very important to CalTech students and what it means is that the exams are given to you, and you take it back to your dorm and you do it in your room whenever you want to. So, it’s a one-hour test. You take it back and when you’re ready to take the test, you time yourself for one hour and you take the test. If the test is closed book, you don’t open any books: you take

home to the 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which is among the most prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art worldwide.” Some of the artist featured are Jeff Koons, Ellsworth Kelly , Jean-Michel Basquiat, Barbara Kruger, Cy Twombly, Ed Ruscha, Kara Walker, Christopher Wool, Joseph Beuys, Jasper Johns, Cindy Sherman, Robert Rauschenberg, and many more.

Da Bomb Broad: 2,000 Works of Art in One Building… Dylan Hong The Broad is an art museum in downtown Los Angeles. It opened on September 26,2015 and had about 3,000 visitors. It was the idea of Eli and Edythe Broad. The museum cost 140 million dollars to build. It was designed by Diller Scofidio, Renfro, and Gensler. The Broad’s art collection is from artists around the world and the artwork was donated from Eli and Edythe Broad’s personal collection. According to the the Broad’s website “The museum is

According to Ed Patuto, Director of Audience Engagement, at the Broad it took 40 years for Eli and Edythe Broad to collect the art and for the Broad to be built. Eli Broad collected art because he enjoyed talking to the artists and he enjoyed collecting art. There are currently 25 people working at the Broad full time. The Broad is a wonderful place with lots of art pieces that were collected from artist around the world. It has an awesome entrance and nice docents. If you enjoy art this is the place to go. Dylan Hong is a 10 year old in the fourth grade. He likes snakes and has a pet corn snake named Motley. He is named that because he’s an albino motley.

On January 2,1962, the Magic Castle opened its door to members of the Academy of Magical Arts. The Academy is a group of magicians and people who love magic. These members are allowed into the Magic Castle to see the shows. Members are allowed to invite friends or family to be a guest. Adults must be over 21 years old to go inside the Magic Castle during the week. Kids are allowed to go to the Magic Castle on certain days. They can go with member on Saturdays and Sundays. To become an associate member, members would have to pay $1,500 first to be a part of the club and then need to pay $750 once a year. Members have to be older than 21 years old. The Magic Castle has three theaters. They are Close Up, Parlor, and Stage. The Close Up theater is small and can only seat about 20 people. Magicians that work in this room do card tricks, coin tricks, and other up close tricks. The Parlor Room is a little bit bigger than the Close Up room. The room can only seat about 100 people. The types of magic that audience can see are tricks that use balls and ropes. The stage is medium sized. It is called the Parlor of Prestidigitation. The largest room at the Magic Castle seats more than 100 people. This is where the big magic acts perform. The room is called Palace of Mystery and opened in 1976. Magicians who perform on this stage perform big illusions like disappearing people or making doves appear. Magicians usually have assistants helping them because it is a big show. Greg Wilson performed on this stage during the opening week in 1976. Wilson has been a professional magician since he was six years old. Wilson’s mom and dad, Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell Wilson, are founding members of the Magic Castle. In the late 1970s, Time magazine printed a photo of Mark Wilson making Nani Darnell Wilson float in front of the Magic Castle. The Magic Castle is filled with magic. It is also a very fancy place to go. The reason it is fancy is you need to wear dress up clothes. The shows are always different because magicians from around the world come to perform. Makayla Carpinteyro is a second grader at Micheltorena Elementary School. She enjoys performing magic for her family, going on vacation and reading.

GOODTIMES “A Hidden Jewel” continued... the test for one hour and you don’t open any books. It’s a system that people are really surprised that it works. When I tell some of my friends from other schools they are convinced that everybody really does cheat. You know how can that really work? But I myself when I was a student there thought that everybody did abide by the honor system. It also meant that if you wanted to leave your purse out in the hall nobody would take it because that would not be a right thing to do. So you felt safe with your possessions being about. We were often allowed to go into the labs at night because they knew that by the honor system that you take care of the possessions in the lab or in the building. So I think it’s something that is unique. I know there are a couple other colleges that have it. But that is a part of what you do at CalTech. ”

Disney and More! Natalie Sanchez “The Happiest Place On Earth,” is Disneyland’s motto! Disneyland is where the whole family can go and enjoy the park. Disneyland is where anyone can have fun and feel like a kid again. Disneyland California was first opened in July 17, 1955. Walt Disney was the founder of this beautiful place, so thank him. This place had just celebrated their 60th birthday. In Disneyland there are many things you can do such as rides and entertainment, but do you know some other thing you can do in Disneyland? ( Beside eating as well)

Believe it or not, CalTech started off as a vocational school in 1891. It was called Throop College of Technology until 1920. In 1907 a solar astronomer named George Ellery Hale joined Throop’s board of trustees and soon started developing the school and the whole of Pasadena into a major scientific and cultural destination, according to the CalTech website. Arthur Fleming, a wealthy resident of Pasadena, donated land for the permanent campus site. Later on,

In July 17, 1955, Disneyland was opened to the public. This place contained, over the years, roller coasters, entertainment and food choices. This is what people see, but do you know there is a secret club? Club 33, is a club that you can pay for the whole year and be treated like royalty. To join, you pay about $25,000 a fee per person, with $10,000 per year. This club is like a restaurant, a very very fancy restaurant. A restaurant that has a dress code! There is another secret in Disneyland, everywhere you turn there is a hidden mickey in the park. Disney does this many times, such as in his movies and all over the park. You just have to look carefully in order to find them. There is a book in Disneyland to find ALL the hidden mickeys. You would be surprised on how many mickeys there are. Disneyland has many secrets, but these are the big ones. Many things happen in Disneyland, but that is where you come in. You can go to Disneyland and look around, ask questions. You know what, you can look it up on google, that is also a good idea! Next time you go to Disneyland, look around and see if you can find hidden mickeys. Natalie is graduating eighth grade at Thomas Starr King Middle School. She likes journalism because she gets to hang out with tutors and students. She likes to watch Disney movies all the time and loves to go to Disneyland.

CalTech used to be an all-boys school. It is not that girls were not allowed, but just that they never tried or were not expected to make it. Things have changed a lot over time. Now CalTech is 40% girls. As Peggy Otsubo said about the changes since her graduation, “I think major thing is that it is a much much better place for women now. I’m glad for that and I think it is a great thing, and we were a little bit of trail blazers because they didn’t really know what to do with us but now women are fully integrated. That is I think the main difference that I see. The campus is also much bigger, much more developed, a lot more nice buildings there.” My name is Katherine Torres. I am a competitive swimmer and I also enjoy doing Shakespeare plays and writing stories.

Illegal Art in LA? Kaylin Lopez J. Paul Getty had the thought of making all art available to the public. Believing this, Getty contributed in 1948 to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Having his personal collections, Getty created his own museum to share with the public in 1953 and opened the doors in 1954. According to getty.edu, “The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance.” The Getty Museum presents the visitors with paintings, drawings, sculptures, exhibits, and much more.

First, who is Walt Disney, if you don’t already know this man. Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901, Chicago Illinois to Elias Disney and Flora Call Disney. Walt was one of five children, four boys and a girl. Later, after Walt’s birth, the Disney family moved to Marceline, Missouri. Walt lived out most of his childhood here. There in the new house, Walt learner to draw. His sister was the one who helped him with his paintings. He would draw pictures of animals or nature and sell them to his neighbors. Later, he moves to Kansas City for acting and filmmaking. With very hard work, and so much ups and downs, he created many classic movies. The movies and characters you know and love, created by a man whose heart was powerful enough to continue on. With this he also created a place where all dreams come true, a place where kids never ever grow up, a place where all ages can have fun… this place is called Disneyland.

Arthur Amos Noyes, a physical chemist from MIT, and Robert Andrews Millikan, a renowned physicist, helped to turn CalTech into one of the leading research institutions in the United States, which it is today. Not many people know that CalTech has land in the Neider Grove, and the three largest sequoias there are named for Millikan, Hale, and Noyes.

Walt Disney Concert Hall Rachael Kim The Walt Disney Concert Hall is home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and two music programs: Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) and Symphonies for Schools. The wave-like building on 111 South Grand Avenue is a remarkable landmark of music. Designed by Frank Gehry, the design of the concert hall was made after the structure of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain with similar waves resembling silver sails. Frank Gehry’s original idea was to make the design clad in stone, but he was urged to change it due to the huge hit of the style of the Guggenheim Museum. Making the museum cost $265 million dollars and at one point almost ended by the Los Angeles County. But, with Lillian Disney’s donation of $50 million dollars, the concert hall was made possible. In an interview with Teresa, a staff member at the concert hall, said that her favorite attraction of the architecture is the Lillian Disney Fountain. The Lillian Disney Fountain is a gift of appreciation from Frank Gehry to Lillian Disney for her generosity and donation. It is a mosaic rose made of broken china and has the inscription: “A Rose for Lilly.” Another of Teresa’s favorite part of the architecture is the woodwork of the inside of the concert hall. The main auditorium is where most of the concerts take place. It can hold 2,265 people in the seats and has a magnificent organ. The organ is also an attraction that many people enjoy. Rachael Kim is a 5th grader at Eagle Rock Elementary. She will go to Portola Magnet for middle school. She does swimming and hopes to one day be a great writer.

The wonderful art of the Getty, is it really all legally there? “Documents found show Getty officials had information as early as 1985 that three of their principal suppliers were selling objects that probably had been looted and that the museum continued to buy from them anyways,” according to the atimes.com. The majority of art pieces at the Getty are assumed to be stolen from other museums or bought from illegal sellers. For example, “Giacomo Medici, 67, is an Italian who operates from his office in Switzerland. In 2004, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined €10 million for selling stolen art. His case is currently under appeal,” according to www.spiegel.de. The Rome prosecutors found handwritten letters and memoirs offering deals of stolen art work. The Getty Center started as a small house bought by J. Paul Getty and is now many buildings, each containing exhibits from different time eras. As part of the outside exhibits, one of the must-see is the central garden. The garden is maze-shaped and is surrounded by shallow clear water filled with coins from visitor’s wishes. “We suggest picking up a gourmet to-go lunch outside the restaurant on the Plaza Level and then grabbing a grassy spot for a leisurely picnic,” says http://www.discoverlosangeles.com. After the many hours of viewing all the art, sculptures, and many other surprising exhibits, lunch can be grabbed from the Getty cafe or a nice picnic out on the Getty Lawn. The Getty Center is a great choice for relaxation and an. opportunity to experience ancient exhibits in person. Kaylin Lopez is a fifteen year-old freshman at Bravo Medical Magnet dealing with much work but still has time to attend journalism. Journalism has helped Kaylin a lot in school with both writing and typing.

GOODTIMES GRIFFITH PARK: A PARK! Roman B. Sarinana

Have you been to all of the parks of the world? Well, that would be a no. But I bet that you’ve been to this one: THE AMAZING GRIFFITH PARK! It was established on Dec. 16 1896 when Colonel Griffith Jenkins Griffith gave 3,015 acres of his park to The City of Los Angeles. There’s an observatory at Griffith Park. It’s called Griffith Observatory. The architects of the building are John C. Austin and Frederick M. Ashley. The observatory is filled with outer space things. There is a Planetarium Show at the Observatory. The current shows are Centered In The Universe, Water Is Life, and Light Of The Valkyries. I think that Centered In The Universe is the coolest one because it takes you on an adventure of cosmic exploration and discovery.

The INCREDIBLE L.A. Zoo with its FANTASTIC Animals!!! The Amazing Chloe Kim History and animals are everything in life. If there were no animals there would have been no way that humans could be alive. Now can you guess what this article is going to be about? Yup! You guessed it! History and animals! Tune in till the end to find out answers of some questions from a person that I interviewed, that went to the L.A. Zoo many times for field trips. Now, about animals. In the L.A. Zoo, there are hippos. There is a mom hippo named Mara, and her daughter, Rosie. There is almost every animal you can think of. For example, there are lions, giraffes, elephants, and much more! Now at the L.A. Zoo there is an exhibit about dinosaurs called “Dinosaurs Unextinct”.

There is a mountain lion in Griffith Park, too. It’s “name” is P22. It is full grown. It doesn’t attack hikers because it has it’s own cave and that cave isn’t near the hikers, so the hikers are safe. Some other animals are bobcats, squirrels, foxes, mules, coyotes, skunks, salamanders, toads, snakes, lizards, deer, hawks, and so forth.

Now let’s talk more about history. In 1885, the City-owned Eastlake Zoo opened in East L.A. Park. IN 1912, the Griffith Park Zoo opened with 15 animals. In 1915, ”Colonel” William Seling opened his combination movie studio and zoo, The Seling Zoo, in Lincoln Park. The L.A. Zoo was the fourth zoo to serve the city. Here is the chart of the early years.

You can go to many places at Griffith Park. You can also go to the LA Zoo!

By 1956, the Los Angeles citizens realized that their city had outgrown the tiny Griffith Park Zoo and had gone ahead with a $6.6 million bond measure to help

Roman goes to Franklin Avenue Elementary School and is 7 years old and is turning 8 this year. He likes to sleep, fence, and play video games.

build a new one. The L.A. Zoo recently partnered with The Orianne Society to support their Mesoamerian Project. The L.A. Zoo will also conduct field surveys, teach local communities in Costa Rica and Panama. It’s near the end. Guess what! Time for questions! …..or should we say, how about a Q & A? I am going to interview my twin sister ……. Allie!! Chloe Kim: What is your favorite animal from the L.A. Zoo? Allie Kim: My favorite animal at the L.A. Zoo was the lions. CK: What are some animals that you saw? AK: Some animals that I saw were lions, meerckats, giraffes, and hippos pooping. CK: What was fun there? AK: Something that was fun was lunch and the gift shop. Chloe is a girl that is in 4th grade. She is 9 years old. Soon she will turn 10. She likes to play sports and video games. Chloe also likes wearing shorts and hates wearing headbands.

Royce Hall, a Great Choice Edward Song Royce Hall is a magical place for people who love music. Much like the Staples Center, many people come to the Royce Hall to listen to music ranging from classical to rock. Many people such as the Coldplay, Albert Einstein, and John F. Kennedy have gone to Royce Hall to either perform or make speeches. Royce Hall’s origin started with Josiah Royce, a philosopher who was born in California and a teacher at Harvard. Royce attended college at UC Berkeley and received a Bachelor’s Degree. He studied under Hermann Lotze in German before going to The Johns Hopkins University where he got one of its first four doctorates. After four years in UC Berkeley, he replaced William James at Harvard and stayed for the rest of his life. Although Josiah Royce never attended UCLA, Royce Hall was dedicated to him for his achievements. After being dedicated to him, it was used for many purposes such as films, speeches, lectures, and more. There have been many different performances such as circuses, pop music performances, and even graduations! Royce Hall has been in many movies such as Angels and Demons, The Nutty Professor, and Legally Blonde. Some of these movies have been classics while others were modern movies starring comedians such as Will Ferrell. It has also been featured on television shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 90210, and Heroes. Edward Song is a student journalist at 826la and loves to write. This helps him take his mind away from the horrors of the world and just write about what he thinks is interesting.

THE Dodger Stadium Sawyer Sarinana I’m guessing, that a lot of you readers out there probably know a lot about the L.A. Dodgers [former name: Brooklyn Dodgers], but you probably don’t know a ton about the stadium. So enough baby talk, let’s get straight to the point. The ballpark was officially opened in 1962, that’s fifty- four years ago! It’s architects are Emil Praeger and Thomas Christian Kavanagh, and it took $23 million U.S. dollars to make. Emil, in addition to Dodger Stadium, also designed Pier 57, Thomas Christian Kavanagh on the other hand has only designed Dodger Stadium. Dodger Stadium is the only current MLB park. It historically held 56,000 people due to capacity limits. The Dodgers went through nine baseball fields since 1879; 1879-1890: Washington Park Brooklyn, NY, 1886-1889: Ridgewood Park Ridgewood (Queens), NY, 1891-1897: Eastern Park East New York (Brooklyn), NY, 19131957: Ebbets Field Brooklyn, NY, 1956-1957: Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJ, 1958-1961: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Los Angeles, CA, 1956-1957: Dodger Stadium Los Angeles,CA. Dodger Stadium is home to not only players but also artists. Many famous singers have played there,

including Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Madonna, Elton John, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, AC/DC, Paul McArtney from the Beatles [whose concert I’ve been to] and more. “I think that stadium is fun for all ages” states Mark Langill, archivist of the Dodger Stadium, “I went to my first game when I was 7, and that was 44 years ago. Dodger Stadium goes through a lot of food in one season, 44.5 tons of french fries, 121,528 gallons of soda, 18,440 pounds of chicken wings, 221,672 pounds of recycled items, 59,755 pounds and 5,602 gallons of cheese sauce, 50,295 gallons of bottled water, 19,250 pounds of fryer oil, 68,7 tons of peanuts served, and 200,000 pounds of glass and aluminum. WHOA, that was a lot of stuff. Imagine 10 seasons... that would be so much food and supplies!! “And so you can enjoy it as a fan, you can enjoy it with your family, and you can enjoy it with students. Really, it’s something people can enjoy their whole lives.” said Mark Langill. He’s right, you truly can enjoy Dodger Stadium anytime. Sawyer is a 4th grader at Franklin Ave. Elementary. She likes reading and dislikes math. Collecting pins is a hobby for her.

GOODTIMES Universal Studios: From rides and movies, to earning money Andres Mah-Candelaria Universal Studios was founded in 1912 by a German immigrant named Carl Laemmle and Universal opened on March 15, 1915. The ranch he bought was 230 acres and it costed $165,000 which would be about $2,475,000 today, which is a lot of money. But that isn’t what Universal Studios was all about, so let’s hear about some theme park information.

The Grove Ally Song The Grove is a unique place to hang out with friends and families. The Grove is also a place to go shopping and eat dinner in elegant restaurants. The Grove opened on March 15, 2002 and has been very popular ever since. The Grove is said to be more popular than Disneyland. In the words of Rick Caruso, “We want to design something where people can come hang out just to meet a friend.” Rick Caruso’s signature project has become a local landmark. Developers began demolition of an antiques alley and other older buildings on Third Street CBS Television City, and broke ground for the new mall in 1999. Where the Grove is today, there used to be a farmers market. The Grove has many restaurants such as Maggiano’s Italian restaurant, The Cheesecake Factory, and Wood Ranch BBQ. There are many stores in the Grove too! Some common stores are Nordstrom, Banana Republic, Gap, Barns and Nobles, J. Crew, Dylan’s Candy Bar, and Apple. The Grove is relaxing for adults, however kids enjoy The Grove too! For example, fourth grader Allie Kim likes The Grove since it has a lot to offer. She likes

everything from restaurants all the way to the theater. “My favorite part of the is the theater because they have movies I want to watch.” said Allie. “My favorite restaurant is the Cheesecake Factory because the cheesecakes there are really good.” Allie said. She also likes the stores there. “My favorite store is either the Nike store or the Dylan’s Candy Bar because at the Nike store, I like to look around seeing cool products, but in the Dylan’s Candy Bar, I like how you can grab any candy you want.” The Grove also has a trolley. The trolley was the organizing principle behind the entire site plan. In other words this means that the trolley helps bring people to different places. “I have rode the trolley and I like to sit in the top front seat because I like to view the sight from the very top.” says Allie. There many reasons why The Grove turned into a cultural landmark. “I think The Grove is a cultural landmark because it has been around for many years.” says Allie Kim. Some other reasons might be that people went there often and went shopping and ate dinner there. Ally Song is in 4th grade. She is 10 years old and her birthday is on December 31st. She goes to Wonderland Avenue School. She likes to write. Her teachers are Ms. Ryan and Mr. Ellis.

During the 1900’s the owner would let people tour around his outdoor studio for only 25 cents and it would be a nickel extra for a boxed chicken lunch. During the tours, Carl would lead people around his backdoor studio and he would talk about how different films are made. On September 4th, 1947 a fire destroyed the Spartacus movie set. Then in 1957, a $500,000 fire destroyed the New York back lot set. Another incident that happened in another Universal Studios set in 2009, when an employee got hit by a 55 mile per hour train, which gave him severe injuries. Sometimes Universal had better times than these. One of the better times for Universal Studios was making about $41 million during the past 6 years. One attraction that Universal spent a lot on was Harry Potter world. They spent 256 million dollars during 2015. Another ride that made Universal spend a lot of money was the Transformers Ride which cost more than $100 million to build. Another time when Universal had The Walking Dead attraction, which brought a lot of adults and teenagers and made more money. Even though they make all this money that doesn’t mean they won’t lose it while making rides. But the business itself and other famous rides around the park make up for this spending fee. They usually make up for this spending fee because according to Wikipedia sources, Universal makes 15 billion a year. Andres Mah-Candelaria is a 6th grader at Eagle Rock Elementary. He likes to do math and play sports such as basketball and soccer. He likes to write because he can see a new perspective in language arts and other writing techniques.

Ask A Kid with Chloe Kim and Ally Song

THe Hollywood Sign Garland Church The Hollywood Sign was built in 1923 by Thomas Fisk Goff. Originally, it said Hollywoodland, but due to the condition it was remodelled to Hollywood in 1949. They removed all light bulbs and this cost $4,000 to remodel. The sign was also lit on the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. I interviewed Diana Wright who works at the Hollywood Sign Trust who said, “The Sign was lit in the 1920’s and then again for the 2000 New Years celebration. Right now it doesn’t have lights for a variety of reasons. But one of the biggest is the Sign sits in a part of Griffith Park that a lot of animals call home including a big mountain lion named P22. We don’t want to disturb them or the nearby residents that live in the neighborhood.” When people think of LA, they think of the Hollywood Sign. Diana said, “The Sign now is an official monument of the city and the Hollywood Sign Trust is in charge of taking care of it. In 1978, Hugh Hefner held a fundraiser to save the Hollywood Sign and auctioned off each of the letters to help pay for

the construction. Celebrities and studios each “purchased” a letter for $28,000 each. However, they are not allowed to take their letter home.” The Hollywood Sign is pretty big. The letters are up to 45 feet. Diana said, “It’s huge! Each of the letters are 45 feet tall. And it can be seen from very far away in Los Angeles so it has to be big.” You might think why doesn’t the sign deteriorate? Diana said, “The last big restoration was in 1978 when the Sign was completely rebuilt into the Sign today. The original Sign that was built in 1923 was only supposed to last for one year so they didn’t use materials that were meant to last. The new Sign is very strong and hasn’t needed any major repairs other than painting. We did repaint the Sign in 2012 in preparation for the Sign’s 90th anniversary in 2013.” Did you know that the sign was originally built for geographical purposes to know where you are, and now you always know you’re in LA whenever you see it. Hi, my name is Garland Church and I’m the 8th grade. I like to play basketball and video games.

Q:How do I convince my parents to let me have a dog? A: You tape your parents to a wall and force feed them durian fruit. Q: What is better? Pepperoni Pizza or Cheese Pizza. A: Pepperoni Pizza is better b/c it has an extra topping on it and if you don’t like pepperoni, suck it up. Q: What 3 items should I take to the future and why? A: Your phone, puppy you earned from force feeding your parents, and a bucket full of durian fruit. Q: How can you answer this question? A: But do you answer questions? Or do you not answer questions is the question at hand. Q: Which came the first? The chicken or the egg? A: Neither. They were both dust bunnies and evolved into an egg and a chicken. Q: Is time travel possible? A: YES! It isn’t called the Time Travel Mart for no reason!

GOODTIMES The Amazing Colburn School Allie Kim The Colburn School is a place full of arts. The School was also founded in 1950. The founder of The Colburn School is Richard D. Colburn. The Colburn School’s original name was The Community School for the Arts. In 1986, the School’s name was changed into Colburn. They do many activities like ballet, singing, acting, and many other CSPA programs. The school is private, has an urban campus, and the president is Sel Kardan. The school is located in Zipper Hall and in Los Angeles. The school website is www.colburnschool.edu and the acceptance rate is 5%. Unfortunately my first interview person did not answer 2 weeks in a row so, I decided to interview my sister, Rachael who takes classes there. Her favorite thing about the school is “the economy and how friendly the community is”. She also said that “the closest concert from now that I have is on May 6”. She will be playing the clarinet. I will be playing the trumpet. Even though she plays the clarinet her favorite string

instrument is the viola. She said that the viola is her favorite string instrument because “the pitch is not too high or too low.”

and why? AC:I’d say the cello. Also because its voice is deeper and “darker.”

Allie Kim Interviews Abigail Caro of The Colburn School

Olvera Street: The Oldest Street in LA Joon Kim What is the oldest place in Los Angeles? If you said Hollywood, that would be wrong. But, if you said Olvera Street, that would be correct. Olvera Street is the oldest street in Los Angeles, built around 1818. Olvera Street is a place that celebrates Mexican culture and brings joy to tourists every day. But how did this place exactly get started?

Natural History Museum: Rats and Turtles and Snakes and More Sofia Mah-Candelaria The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles is a very cool place! It has been opened for a very long time. When the museum was being built , it took 38 years to complete. The opening date was in the year 1913. There are a lot of exhibits in the museum. Also, there are a lot of upcoming museum exhibits. “You can see rats and turtles and snakes and more. Some people love the dinosaurs most, or they love exploring our Gems and Minerals. Others would say they love exploring our outdoor garden,”said Alexi Chisler, Supervisor of Exhibits. The past exhibit of the museum is the mummy museum. This exhibit shows some bodies of mummies. Now I will tell you about the special exhibits. It has the Butterfly Pavilion, the Dino Lab, the Edible Garden, and the Spider Pavilion. These are the special exhibits and the past exhibit. For this next paragraph I will tell you about the exhibits that will be staying at the museum forever.

The exhibits are the African Mammals, Age of Mammals, Nature Lab, Nature Gardens, North American Mammals, and many more. The Nature Lab is in the second level of the museum and this exhibit shows you a lot of nature and a lot of the animals. The Nature Lab also has some activities kids would enjoy a lot more than adults. Now I will tell you about the Edible Gardens. The Edible Gardens is an outdoor garden that has a lot of edible plants. But you can’t eat the plants. Even though it is called the edible garden. What changes did you make in each exhibit? “If I do make a change, it will be for the safety of the exhibit and the people who visit. For example, right now on the First Floor, we have a giant Oarfish on display inside of a tank.”, said Chisler. How long does it take to make the exhibits? “How long depends on how big the exhibit is. Then there are so many steps to create an exhibit. It can take 2 years, or sometimes even more,to create an exhibit from scratch.” Hello my name is Sofia and I am 10 years old. One of my hobbies is cooking. Some day, when my mom is old, I will cook for her. I am also in 4th grade at Eagle Rock Elementary School .

It all started in 1781, when Spanish settlers came to Los Angeles to live here. The settlers were made up of 11 families who were accompanied by Spanish soldiers. The place became a town for the Mexicans and the Spanish people and lasted for a long time. In 1928, a young woman named Christine Sterling was walking along in the place and saw the Avila Adobe, the oldest house in LA, with a notice stating that it will be demolished. Concerned with the fact that the historic home was going to be destroyed, she decided to raise money to repair and preserve the ancient building. She also wanted to make a Mexican marketplace near the adobe where people could learn about the Mexican and Spanish heritage of LA. Because of her her work, many of the historic places were saved. In 1930, her dream of a marketplace cametrue and Olvera Street was born. There are a lot of things you can do in Olvera Street. You can shop, eat, and listen to mariachi bands in this wonderful place. The shops in the marketplaces sell things from pottery to various toys such as wind-up cars. Olvera Street also has events going on such as the Day of the Dead and the Blessings of the Animals. With many shops, souvenirs, and many historical attractions, it is no wonder that Olvera Street attracts over 2 million visitors a year. If you want to have fun and visit somewhere in Los Angeles, Olvera Street might be a good choice for you. Joon Kim is a 12-year old boy who goes to Cathedral Chapel School.
