Visiting Echo Park

The Best Store in Koreatown

and Emely told me Ralphs is open 24 hours.

Ally Song

Many people visit Los Angeles and come to Echo Park. Many visitors have to go around by themselves or sometimes with a friend. For example, Harris Kornstein said, “I came to Echo Park because it was on the way back to San Francisco and my friend lives up the valley and I’ve never been here before.” He also mentioned, “It is nice to see people walking around Echo Park.” Visitors don’t know about a great tour which shows them around the great sights and buildings of Echo Park. The tour is a walking tour but still very interesting. Visitors get to know Echo Park with more details about what they see through the tour.

Hello my name is Ally Song and I’m going to tell you what the best store in Koreatown is. It’s a store that is very close to my house. You can buy a lot of useful things there. You can buy food, you can buy kitchen tools, and you can even buy a box of crackers! If you can’t find things you need, workers help you.

My mom was there at the interview and she wanted to know what it was like to work as a Courtesy Clerk. Emely told me her job was bagging groceries for the customers, organizing carts, making sure customers have a pleasant shopping experience, keeping a neat and organized store, being a cashier, and overall making it possible for the store to thrive comfortably.

The tour is great and goes to many of the landmarks of Echo Park. For example, Jensen’s Recreation Center, Angelus Temple, and the lake which all represent Echo Park. The tour is two hours long because it also includes some of the stairways across from the lake.

Can you guess what store I’m talking about? It’s Ralphs in Koreatown! To get some answers about what makes this Ralphs important, I interviewed Emely who works there as a Courtesy Clerk. She likes her job. Emely told me that workers there remember the aisle numbers by going through them one by one. Workers at the store try to memorize where certain things are and what matches each category. It is not hard working at Ralphs, but it can be challenging at times because the store gets really busy. She told me she works six hours a day for just two days a week, Mondays and Tuesdays.

Emely likes working at Ralphs, she said people are very nice in general. People like me. P.S. Visit Ralphs, the best store in Koreatown.

I asked Emely where the products come from and she told me Ralphs gets products from three different warehouses in Riverside, Compton, and Glendale. I wanted to know how long Ralphs has been open for

The Hollywood Sign

Griffith’s Greatness

Cheyenne Williams

Joon Kim

I think it’s cool when you see the Hollywood sign and you know right where you are. To me, it’s a sign near my house that I see on the way to school every day. To others, it’s where all the movies are made. The sign means many things to many people: movie stars, palm trees, and film reels. But why was it built in the first place, and will it always be here?

Out on the mountains of Los Angeles, there sits not only the famous Hollywood sign, but also the Griffith Observatory, a paradise for scientists and astronomers. This shows all kinds of facts, displays, and even shows about the great world called The Universe. In the first room, you’ll see the pendulum that shows the forces of gravity. Now if you’re worried about money, there’s no point. It’s actually FREE!

The Hollywood sign was built by Harry Chandler on Mt. Lee in 1923. At first the sign said “Hollywoodland” to advertise the real estate he was building. It was originally an electric sign with bulbs that lit up the night. In 1949, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce got rid of the “LAND,” and fixed the letter “H.” In 1978, they rebuilt it, and there was no sign at all for three months! Today the sign is still standing, it’s in good shape, and when you see it, you know right where you are.

The first tour starts at 10:00 a.m. and begins at the boathouse. The tour includes many things except for the insides of buildings. The tour can also introduce people to restaurants and stores along Sunset. On the tour one of the great places it goes to is Elysian Park. Elysian Park is the oldest public park in the city and second largest, after Griffith Park. It is a great place to go for a walk with its great trails. The tour is really great, but another way to find out about Echo Park is to simply walk around. A visitor named Harris said, “I just got here, I’ve only gone to a restaurant, the food is good though. I also found some neat clothes at Out of the Closet.” The stairways are popular public stairs that go across Echo Park’s hillsides. Many of the stairways are shortcuts to streets but can also lead to great sites. Echo Park is great for visitors because it has many great things to do and places to go.

First off, we need to understand about how it all began. It all started with a man named Griffith J. Griffith. He was born in Wales in 1850 and came to America as a teen. In fact, the land where the observatory AND the park was once a part of a Spanish settlement known as Rancho Los Feliz. Griffith thought that a great city like Los Angeles needs a great park. (New York had Central Park, why shouldn’t Los Angeles have a park?) On December 16, 1896, he donated 3,015 acres of Rancho Los Feliz to create a park with his name. He also offered the city $100,000 just to create an observatory. He died in July 6, 1919. We can now conclude that this is a king of all observatories. It contains every space fact you would expect and unexpected facts. (I will not spoil the place for you so I will not talk much about the rooms.) Yes, indeed, Griffith was a great man, as many of the folks of Los Angeles say.

GOODTIMES The Scoop on Crazy Gelato Eddie Song There are many people who love ice cream! Some think of it as a delicacy, while many just think of it as just another tasty dessert. Pazzo Gelato, AKA “Crazy Gelato” is one of these shops, they think of ice cream both as a delicacy and a delicious dessert. I interviewed the founder of the company, Mike Buch. He was nice enough to give detailed answers. GT: What started this business? MB: My brother-in-law (Chris) and I started the business and built it with my late uncle, Mark. GT: Why is it called Pazzo Gelato? MB: “Pazzo” means “crazy” in Italian. We felt that our approach to gelato was crazy and fun so the meaning translated well and the name flowed as well.

VOLUME VI, ISSUE II

ingredients for, I would say the basics are always the most popular:

think they can make something great out of something cheap!

Vanilla bean Chocolate (anything with chocolate) Sea salt caramel Strawberry Mango Pistachio

GT: If the illuminati ordered your ice cream, what would they choose? (In your opinion?) MB: Whatever they want! :)

GT: Are all the flavors natural? MB: Yep, we don’t use artificial “stuff.” That’s why I insist on using high-quality ingredients and sourcing my produce personally. It’s the only way to ensure the taste is extraordinary. If the fruit I purchase tastes great, then I know I can make a gelato that tastes great. Give me crappy chocolate and I’ll give you crappy chocolate gelato! That’s what always amazes me about businesses that don’t insist on high quality ingredients. They

Overall, Pazzo Gelato is a great ice cream store to go to at anytime or just to kick back and have some rest drinking coffee or eating some cold ice cream! I wish they made some bizarre flavors like the illuminati flavor (a cone made out of waffles that is tinted so it looks like the illuminati symbol with an eye in the middle of a triangle and green and black ice cream that has a chocolate coating of a dollar) or the dumpster flavor (many flavors mixed into one). Also what is their goal? (I forgot to ask...) but over all, Pazzo Gelato= Life Coverage (no more hunger…)

GT: What makes the flavors demented? MB: It’s our approach to the flavors and the various combinations we come up with that are what I’m most proud of. Anyone can make peach sorbetto, but most won’t go to the local farmer’s market every week to hand-select produce and schlep back 30 or 40 lbs of fruit (and multiply that by the range of varieties) to make their product. I guess you just need to try the various flavors and experience the constant rotation to understand. GT: When did the one in Echo Park open? MB: About three years ago, but I recently sold it to my employee over there (Reggie). We’re focusing on gelato and getting away from food; however, Reggie loves food and was basically running the cafe so it makes sense that he’s the new owner. GT: What’s everyone’s favorite ice cream? MB: As much as I love the exotic flavors that I source

Search to Involve Filipino Americans Jereme Lua The afterschool enrichment program, Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) is still serving the community of Los Angeles since its start in 1972. Located on Temple Street it serves as a cultural beacon stationed at the very start of the Historic Filipinotown. Currently, SIPA has been hosting afterschool programs such as Sessions LA. SIPA’s after school program helps kids receive tutoring, enrichment, and most importantly, the opportunity to see the world in a different view. The normal day of a “SIPA kid” starts off with them going outside and allowing them to play with their fellow students, then it’s to time to do their homework with the help of several tutors. Finally, students are allowed to play or join programs like the Filipino Instrument Orchestra. The orchestra is comprised of Filipino instruments like the Angung a Tamalang, a drum made up of cut bamboo. Other than the orchestra, students can spend their time on other after school programs like Sessions LA. Sessions LA is a small DJ program fit for young adults and middle schoolers. Its aim is to help young minds nurture their creativity through the unorthodox instrument, turntables and records. Ali “ Alibi” Bhai, the music production teacher of Sessions, hosts the popular concert held every first Friday of the month called, “Freestyle Fridays.” During these concerts, the musicians sell their albums and feature aspiring young artists. Their Executive Director Joel F. Jancinto says, ”Mabuhay ang Komunidad Pilipino Amerikano!” (Long live the Filipino American Community!)

Won Kok Garland Church I had the chance to interview a man from Won Kok and asked some questions about the restaurant. This restaurant is good and has good reviews about the food, but the service is poor, according to the ratings. But overall, the food is still good. GC: “What are the popular foods?” WK: The popular foods are: egg tart, pork buns, pork dumplings, sesame balls, and rice cakes.”

What Happened to the Ducks and Geese in Echo Park Lake?

GC: “Is it affordable?” WK: “Yes the ratings are great and say it is under $10.”

Sofia Mah-Candelaria

GC: “Is it good?” WK: “Like I said, the food has good ratings.” GC: “What are your busiest times?” WK: “During the day, around lunch it starts to get busy and at night it cools down.”

Football Teams Coming Back to LA Joseph Barron In the next year or two, the NFL might bring football back to LA. Teams would play at the Rose Bowl or LA Coliseum until the new stadium is built. Possible locations for the new stadium include: downtown near the Staples Center, Hollywood Park, or Chavez Ravine. Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) is leading the downtown building site, which is part of a plan to improve the LA Convention Center. One elected official, Councilmen Curren Price, when asked about AEG’s plan, thinks that having a football stadium will score a “touchdown” for LA, with or without having a local team. Possible teams that would move to LA are the Raiders, Rams, Chargers. All three teams have played in LA in the past, but there is no agreement on who is coming to LA now.

The Echo Park Lake was a reservoir for drinking water in 1870. The lake failed for drinking water and turned into a lake for walking and seeing the ducks and other wildlife that lived there. Many years later, people started throwing shopping carts and a lot of other items into the lake. According to echoparklake.org, by 2006, the State of California called the lake an “impaired body of water.” This means that the lake was dirty and polluted. In 2011, the City of Los Angeles started a big project to fix the lake. One big problem had to be solved: What to do with all the ducks and geese that lived at the lake while they were fixing it? In an article from the LA Times published on September 26, 2011, the animals were not gone while they were cleaning, but they made little ponds for the geese and ducks to stay while they were rebuilding the lake.

GOODTIMES One Fashion Designer’s Way of Life

ASK A KID

Chloe Kim The fashion designer Sue Wong was born in the country side of southern China. When she was young, she was bored because she had nothing to do. She was thinking of what to do. Then she thought of an idea so she got to work right away. She was making her own paper dolls. Then she started making her own dresses when she was nine years old. She opened a boutique shop in Venice, California. After a while, she opened another upscale boutique shop in West Hollywood. As days passed, Sue Wong was an immediate stellar success, bringing the company sales from 2 million dollars in revenues to over 52 million dollars within a three year period. I got this information from SueWong. com. She has her own website and her biography is on the website. She even shows some of her own dresses. So check out her website! You don’t have to, but you should.

Allie Kim Q: How could you get $1,000 without working? A: Just get money like from Christmas or your birthday. Q: What should I give my girlfriend for Valentines Day? A: A whole bottle of nutella and a card that has a furry monster on it.

Natalie Sanchez Disney’s Aladdin, Mrs.Doubtfire, Good Morning Vietnam, and Jumanji, are all examples of movies that the great actor who has died, starred in. He is the great Robin Williams. He died of depression, but he has left a great legacy. He earned a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame; he was in 52 movies; he was funny, and he also left with us quotes like: “No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.” An 826LA reporter gave a five question survey to students:

Kylie Pimentel In the past few weeks, modern acts like Elvis Costello, The Pixies, and Blake Shelton have performed at the Hollywood Bowl. The famous outdoor amphitheater has a long history going back to 82 years. That is a long time. The Hollywood Bowl was opened on July 11, 1922. This old amphitheater was once known as Daisy Dell. Daisy Dell was a natural canyon on the hillside behind Highland Ave. People found out that if you played music on the hillside, the sound was very good to hear. When people came to hear this, they had to sit on blankets on top of the wild grass while the band played on a simple stage. In 1928, an architect named Lloyd Wright designed concentric arches on the stage, but it only lasted for one season. Then in 1929, they made a permanent shell on the stage. Another architect used Lloyd’s idea. Just a few modifications made by Frank Gehry in the 1970s to the1980s. Then, while all of those actions were going on, the seats were finally made into wooden benches. Then the seating was changed again, but permanently. There are 17,376 seats in total. The organizers were a group of children, women, and men. Many people worked hard together to have an amphitheater. The money came from some rich people, including a woman who donated a diamond ring. Students also helped. Because of these donations from the Hollywood High School, so they are invited to have their graduation at the Hollywood Bowl every year.

Q: Why do little kids cry when they don’t get what they want? A: They whine all the time because they need to do the number 2. Q: Why do children get more attention than adults? A: Adults pay more attention to their phone.

Q: What would you do if your head was on fire? A: Just dump a bucket of water over your head.

1. Do you know Robin Williams? 8 people replied yes and 3 said no.

2. If you do from what movie, t.v. show, or his death? A lot of people answered with Mrs.Doubtfire, Aladdin, Hook, Flubber, Mork And Mindy, and the Dead Poet Society 3. Do you think he is funny? EVERYONE said yes. 5. Do you know he is in the movie: Hook, Aladdin, and Flubber? Some people said yes to all, but not all said yes. Robin Williams left a pretty good life. We will always remember you Robin WIlliams. We love and miss you. R.I.P.

Exit Stage East Coast Gem Anthony Galiciano Film jobs are leaving Los Angeles and moving to the East Coast and to other countries around the world instead of staying here in sunny California! I interviewed some kids and tutors at 826LA and they had these things to say: Larry, a tutor at 826, who works at the LA Times said, movies are leaving LA “Because studios get money from other states.” Jereme Lua, a student from Downtown Magnet High School said, “Los Angeles is a populated area, not fit for most movies, even though it would be convenient, there are more scenic places to film a movie.” Ana, a really good writer, said that film jobs are leaving LA, “Because LA isn’t the movieland much anymore.” Some of these quotes are simple and some are complex, but here are the true reasons why they are leaving LA. According to LA Daily News, the studios are shooting and moving elsewhere because the cost of taxes that it takes to film here in LA is increasing, which means that the California government wants them to pay more here than in other states and countries. Variety states that other states and countries provide lower tax credits to film over there than here, which attracts lots of film companies because they don’t have

to pay as much to film there than over here. Some of the many places that people are going to film movies are Louisiana and Georgia. The mayor of Los Angeles has noticed that people are going elsewhere in order to film and is trying right now to prevent more of them from leaving Los Angeles by offering tax breaks. Without film jobs we wouldn’t be considered the “film capital” of the world anymore. It would be bad because all of the major movie stars might move away so they can keep their jobs. Also, without them, tourists would leave Los Angeles which means we will lose lots of money because most of our money comes from tourism. Without them, LA would be “dead” to the world.

GOODTIMES Place to Go: Museum of Death Ana Sotomayor Let me whisk you away to a land where all are intrigued to go, but no one dares to enter. The Museum of Death has open arms, or doors, to everybody but unfortunately, very few accept the embrace. Curious, morbid, or willing to take a scare, are the people who present themselves at their “Death School.” The Museum of Death, is a place where all things, from all places, and from all times, are set on display for our allured eyes. A land of revenge, enticing insanity, and the most complex issue of all time, death. A realm of serial killers who have a lust for being malicious, a truthful dimension of everlasting knowledge to those who want to learn from the institution of

The Museum of Death has been a witness to growth, sacrifice of valuable things, and to many weak stomachs. The masterminds behind the museum are power couple, JD Healy and Cathee Shultz. The Museum of Death was first, surprisingly, a museum that, according to LA Weekly, “Initially located in San Diego, the museum grew unexpectedly out of Healy’s conceptual project about breakfast cereal, and how consumerism manipulates us from cradle to grave. ” The Museum of Death was founded in 1995 and was innocent at first, like every horror movie you’ve seen.

Ivan Paz

LA Weekly stated, ”Over time, things began to go in a different direction. Healy built an exhibit of torture devices...They decided to use the basement as a small museum to house Healy’s “dark and deep” artworks, exhibits and letters. Their annual show of serial-killer artwork became a popular event.” The couple wrote to serial killers and did everything that was considered “out of the ordinary.” The owners decided to move to Hollywood for more of an audience in 2000 and “The Hollywood Museum” opened up in 2008. Artifacts were donated to the museum such as old police files and crime scene photos. The museum housed serial killer artwork, photos of Charles Manson, the head of Henri Landru, and so much more. The Museum of Death is so graphic that it is not a very ideal place for the easily sickened. The Museum of Death gives you the power to guide yourself throughout the whole building for $15 and there is no age limit because, as Mr. Erek, a worker at The Museum of Death, stated on September 29, “There’s no death education in this country.” dessert.” She and her husband Rob are the owners of Masa. She has lived in Echo Park for 15 years and she feels happy to live in such a wonderful community of friends and neighbors. Rodeo is a Mexican grill, and another popular restaurant in Echo Park. I interviewed a person named Marilyn Pelayo and she is a corporate representative for Hay Rodeo, Inc., who own the restaurant. They have been open since August 1998. They serve American and Mexican food, but their main focus is Mexican food. They serve breakfast all day and deliver, which makes them busy all the time—every day. Her personal favorite dish is the Carne Asada and Camarones Plate.

Stories Books and Cafe is an independent book seller located in Echo Park. They’ve been around for 5 years and sell and trade books. They also sell their own breakfast meals like scrambled eggs & toast and agg & cheese bagels. They also have an all day everyday menu with options like bagel & cream cheese and Kate’s mid-west chili- mac. I interviewed a Stories Books and Cafe barista named Giselle Reiber, she was nice enough to answer a few questions for me. IP: How long has Stories Books and Cafe been around? GR: About 5 years. IP: Do you like working at Stories Books and Cafe? GR: Yes. IP: What’s the best selling drink at Stories Books and Cafe? GR: Iced coffee. IP: How long have you been working in Stories Books and Cafe? GR: 4 months. IP: How would you rate your experience at Stories Books and Cafe out of 4 stars? GR: It has been wonderful. I would rate it a 4. Thank you Giselle Reiber for answering all my questions, it helped me very much with this article. Stories Books and Cafe is a good place to relax and drink a coffee because it’s very quiet. If you need to work on a project Stories Books and Cafe is a perfect place to drop by or if you just want to read an interesting book. Did you know lipstick contains chemicals? Lipstick contains dyes, oils, waxes, and lotions. It gives the lips color and protection, but what it is not doing is protecting your body because it has chemicals.

The top 2 favorite restaurants in Echo Park are Masa and Rodeo Grill. Now I will tell you a little about them. Masa is a bakery and cafe. I interviewed a person named Rhonda and she says Masa has been open since August 28th, 2004, which means they have recently celebrated their 10th anniversary. They serve a lot of family recipes, but they have a main focus on Chicago deep dish pizza since their chef, Rob, was born in Chicago. They also bake their breads from scratch. The restaurant is pretty busy overall, except lunch time is a little slower, says Rhonda. Their busiest times are on weekend nights, when everyone goes out for dinner. Rhonda says her personal favorite dish would be “the Manchego Salad to start, the California Chicago Deep Dish Pizza (with Spinach & Sundried Tomato) and the Warm Chocolate Almond Croissant Bread Pudding for

The Autry Museum would be the most perfect place for nerdy history pupils and nerdy history teachers!

When you go through the walkway of the Autry museum you will find a huge dirty-silver statue of Gene Autry on his horse. Inside the Autry museum you will find a gold penny room, a bunch of art, and a mural of Native Americans and English people. In the gold room, you put your shifter under water and pan for gold. The gold is actually fools’ gold because it is fake. One of the pieces of art is a rug probably made with willow. It is red with black, and green stripes. People dyed the willow with berry juices or colored tree sap.

Simpsons Ride at Universal Studios

Walk of Fame brings 10 million tourists per year and it is free to look at the stars in the sidewalk of famous actors and directors. At the Getty Center, the parking fee is $15 for cars or trucks, but if you ride a bike it is free of charge. Then, admission is free to get into the museum. As soon as you get in, you ride a tram up a steep hill to the art galleries, gardens, and shops. The stones they used to build the museum have fossil imprints on the outside. One famous painting is “Irises” by Vincent Van Gogh.

Universal Studios is a theme park in Hollywood that lets you experience the movie industry. It also has rides like roller coasters and movie-themed rides like Transformers, the Simpsons, and King Kong .The admission is expensive: it is $89 for 10 year olds-adults and $79 for 3-9 year olds. Outside is the City Walk which is free and has restaurants, gift shops, and a movie theater.

Griffith Park has a lot of attractions like Shakespeare plays, hiking trails, a carousel, golf courses, and horseback riding. Griffith Park is 4,310 acres and is one of the largest parks in America. The zoo is the most popular attraction in the park because the population of new animals keeps growing; the newest area is the Rainforests of America. The tickets are: kids 2-12($14), seniors 62 and up($16), and 13-adults($19). Hiking in Griffith Park

GOODTIMES Echo Park Lake Monica Lee Echo Park Lake has a very beautiful view. There are ducks and turtle and fishes—they make little kids interested. There are pink and white lotuses that make artists want to paint them. There is the peaceful scene and the cold breeze that makes people wake up early in the morning to walk around and enjoy the peace. There are boats and canoes and cranes. The water had rocks and algae. There are tall grasses in the water and ducks swimming and dunking their heads under the water hoping to catch a fish.

The best season to visit Echo Park has to be when the baby ducks are born. The little baby ducks are usually born in spring. They are so cute with their little tan, brown, and yellow colored feathers and the way they follow their parents. Besides the cute baby ducks there are also several geese. Sometimes there would be some baby geeses also. There are also one or two muscovies. These ducks look like a type of goose turkey. The Echo Park Lake has been reconstructed, because the new and improved lake would help remedy stormwater pollution, meet the state’s water standards, and to make the view nicer for the people who visit.
