my previous novels, and Viva will definitely be returning in the second book of the series, Don’t Fret the Small Stuff. But I haven’t abandoned grittier mysteries entirely. I’m also in development on a mystery series set in a small town in Northern Michigan. I love small towns and have lived in small towns most of my life. Interesting places like Cortez, Colorado and Bluff, Utah. I lived in Monument Valley on the Navajo Indian Reservation. I’ve met some of the most interesting people with some of the most interesting secrets in these little out of the way places, places people run away to and sometimes hide out in. Music (specifically the ukulele) added so much to this story, almost like it was a part of the setting, or another character even. Is music a big part of your life? Music has become important in my life. Though there was music in my home as a child, there were no musical instruments and I had no musical training. One day a few years ago, I took time off from writing to learn to play the ukulele. Why the ukulele? I don’t know. Anyway, I bought one and joined the Phoenix Ukulele Group, and just loved playing and wished I had started earlier in life. I now have six ukuleles, two guitars, and two dulcimers. But writing is all consuming, so I don’t have as much time to devote to music as I’d like. I tell people that I was born to be a rock star, but I write books instead. You are the first author we've featured twice. Thank you for being such a friend of the magazine and this 85086 book club. What are some of your favorite things about this area and does it ever influence your characters or towns? Anthem is a marvel, isn’t it? And there is so much to love about it. It has everything anyone would want in a community along with a very active and engaged HOA. I’ve lived here longer than I’ve lived anywhere. It’s not exactly a small town, but it’s far enough away from Phoenix that some people think it’s “out there” in the sticks. My house happens to be on a nice quiet street with a wash out back. It’s not a through street so there’s no traffic. It’s a very compact, contained neighborhood, sort of like my own little small town in the middle of Anthem. And, oh, yes, I have an as yet unpublished manuscript set in Anthem with much of the activity taking place at Anthem Outlet Mall. So, watch for that one.

MORE THAN any other carmaker, Dodge has remained committed to testosterone-fueled muscle. Even the tamest Chargers and Challengers have an unmistakable stance and strike a commanding pose. So, what if you have a muscle car soul, but a minivan lifestyle? The answer to that question is unequivocally, Dodge Durango R/T. This performance-oriented SUV looks the part, with a functional hood scoop and an aggressive font fascia that looks ready to handle any situation you throw at it. Running the carpool? Check. Durango can be configured to seat up to seven passengers in three rows of seats. Road trip? Bring your toys along because the R/T is available with all-wheel drive and up to 7,400 pounds of towing capacity. And most importantly, it’s fun to drive. Durango R/T is equipped with a 360-horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine. While most SUVs sit on car-based front-wheel-drive platforms, the Durango is rear-wheel drive, improving its on-road performance. Dodge has given the Durango a 50/50 weight distribution, reducing the body-roll sensation; you always feel in control, with the wheels firmly planted on the pavement. All-wheel drive is available to increase traction and improve traction for those trips to the mountains or the campsite. More than 60

THE MR. BC pageant returns to Boulder Creek High School on April 26. The annual charity event features 12 well-known male seniors taking the stage for an evening of fun, lighthearted performances. In addition to being a rousing school-spirited event, Mr. BC participants get the community involved by soliciting funds for charity. This year, the event benefits local Daisy Mountain firefighters, specifically the families of fallen or injured members. Previous beneficiaries have included Little Kids Rock, which works with low-funded schools to bring them money and instruments to aid their music programs and Halo Animal Rescue, a no-kill facility that provides refuge to pets. Contestants vie for various titles including Mr. Generous, awarded to the participant who raises the most money by going around the community in the time leading up to the event to solicit donations. Meanwhile, during the pageant, audience members are encouraged to donate and crown one of the contestants as Mr. Popular. The public is invited to join in the Mr. BC festivities, which start at 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased for $10 each at the BCHS auditorium on the evening of the event.

Role Model Anthem teen Gabe Geselle inspires, supports, and teaches local youth. By Emma Suttell Photos by Ashlyn Drayton
GABE GESELLE, a Boulder Creek High School senior, not only loves Anthem’s sense of community, but also enjoys contributing to the lives and well-being of fellow youth in the area. A lifeguard, swim coach, and youth group coach, Gabe invests her free time into inspiring, supporting, and teaching the youth of Anthem. She credits Anthem as a community that is always aiming to create the best environment for every family. Since age 5, Gabe’s been involved in recreational swimming, and has continued to be a leader in the sport for her community. “I’m really passionate about swim because I grew up around the water. This year, I was the co-captain of Boulder Creek Swim and Dive. I actually work for Anthem as a lifeguard and a swim coach, which is really cool because the community center makes it really team-focused. I really like that because I get to bond with my co-workers

and others that work for the community center,” she says. Working with youth up to age 6, Gabe emphasizes that “being a swim coach is a really fulfilling job” because she gets the opportunity to work with children while teaching them a life-saving skill. Gabe’s work with youth doesn’t stop on the weekends; she also serves as a youth coach at Christ Church of the Valley’s Anthem campus. There, Gabe works with seventh-grade girls, and commits every Saturday night to connecting with them. Of a typical Saturday night, she says, “The girls are in a stage where they’re starting to figure out who they are and who they want to become. I like helping them navigate the struggles of middle school; I get to reflect on what I went through as a middle schooler and apply what I’ve learned to what they’re going through.”
Volunteering at CCV also led Gabe to commit to the life of a little girl in Colombia. Through a program called Compas-

Creek. If you take the I-17, exit Carefree Highway and head east for 7 miles or so, you’ll see the sign on the left. This park charges $6 per vehicle, so be sure your humans bring money. Dogs are most welcome on leash. We chose the 3 ½-mile loop, but you have lots of options from short to long. We parked at the first lot and got on the Overton trail. We didn’t go too far before we saw a sign for the Go John Trail, and we hiked this up and around a mountain. This desert has more lava rock and unique mountains than others we’ve hiked. It was quite pretty. Because they require a fee, it wasn’t as busy as some other trails would be on a weekend, and we didn’t feel like we would be run over by a mountain biker. That’s a good thing! Still, we found plenty of folks to say hello to and allow them to adore me. The trail was very dusty but not too rocky. Our hike was moderate in difficulty. Along the way, you’ll find some benches with great views of Phoenix. The park has lots of picnic tables and pavilions as well. It is a place you could spend some time. As we turned to make our way back, we passed the other two parking lots. We had to walk along the road from the third parking lot back to ours. My mom doesn’t like that because I don’t walk a straight line. Humans and dogs need to watch out for cars along this stretch that takes you back to the Overton trail—up a hill and back to where we started. We all had to shake the dust off, but it was worth it. We enjoyed the scenery and time outside. This is yet another wonderful local gem. We live in a great place.

Get a taste of the islands at Mama’s Hawaiian Bar-B-Cue. By Andrew Leach Photos by Andrew Leach
MAMA’S HAWAIIAN Bar-B-Cue is a unique addition to the local dining scene. Serving traditional Hawaiian plate lunches and homemade desserts, the Anthem outpost offers area diners a taste of island living in a laid back setting with a large dining area and a drive-thru option. One out of seven locations, I went to Mama’s when it first opened here. I wasn’t blown away with my first visit. However, I think it’s important to visit a restaurant twice before writing it off completely. In this case, I’m glad I did. A lot of people think of Spam, macaroni salad, or rice when thinking about Hawaiian food. While those items are available at Mama’s, that’s hardly the extent of the menu. There are a number of interesting options to choose from; although I suggest the island specials or plate lunches as a starting off point. We started with a Spam musubi ($2) as an appetizer. It’s not on the printed or online menu, but is available if you ask. For those unfamiliar with musubi, it’s a bed of sticky white rice and protein wrapped up with a small ribbon of seaweed. This iteration features a marinated slice of Spam. Don’t let the Spam dissuade you. Anyone who’s visited Hawaii on a regular basis knows Spam is a dietary staple there. Islanders serve it
Spam musubi
in abundance. Don’t picture the iconic blue and yellow can of meat. Yes, it’s Spam, but at Mama’s it’s sliced and marinated and ends up delicious. If you’ve never tasted Spam that has been treated properly, you’re missing out on a culinary experience. Up next, we ordered the teriyaki chicken sandwich ($8.49). Note: all sandwiches come with French fries as a side item. The marinated chicken breast is grilled and served on a toasted bun and finished with a piece of grilled pineapple. The chicken is tender, but did taste a bit like it was precooked and then re-heated upon ordering. We then selected the loco moco meal ($8.99) off the island specials section of the menu. Featuring two scoops of white rice served with two island-seasoned beef patties topped with a fried egg, it’s then covered with thick beef flavored gravy. This is a very popular dish in Hawaii, and Mama’s does a great job recreating it. The beef patties are perfectly seasoned and when you taste the yolk of the egg combined with the rest of the ingredients, you’ll understand why it’s an island favorite. The final item we ordered was from the combo plate section ($12.99). On the combo plate menu items, you get to select two protein styles from a list of nine options. Other protein options
Teriyaki sauce, Hawaiian barbeque sauce, and sweet chili sauce
36 || 85086MAGAZINE.com || APRIL 2018
Loco moco meal
include tofu, fish, or pork. Some proteins are an additional charge, so be aware when ordering. After you decide on your two proteins, you then select two side dish items from a list of six items. We opted for the teriyaki beef and the teriyaki chicken for the proteins and then white rice and mixed vegetables for the side items. The vegetable option, consisting of broccoli, green bell peppers, and carrots, is a small additional charge. The beef and chicken have a fantastic flavor, especially when you add some extra teriyaki sauce from one of the bottles on the table. Unlike the chicken sandwich, this chicken has a great charred flavor and tastes amazing. Meanwhile, the beef is tender with just a slight bite to it. Three sauce options are available to diners: teriyaki sauce, a Hawaiian barbeque sauce, and a sweet chili sauce. The teriyaki sauce is thinner than the other sauces, but is very flavorful. The Hawaiian barbeque sauce has a Polynesian flare, while the sweet chili sauce is more of an Asian style sweet chili sauce. One of the major advantages to Mama’s Hawaiian Bar-B-Cue is its location. Plus, it offers Anthem residents something other than pizza or fast food for lunch or dinner. It’s great to support local and you have the added benefit of feeling like you can get a taste of the islands without the plane ride. Aloha!

Elevated Levels
Local pharmacists talk over-the-counter products for high cholesterol. By Sarah Penny and Tara Storjohann QUESTION: I recently had my annual labs drawn at my doctor’s office. For the first time in my life, I noticed that my total cholesterol is slightly higher than normal. Besides working on my diet and exercising more, are there any supplements I can take to help lower my cholesterol? ANSWER: With heart disease (heart attacks and strokes) being one of the leading causes of death in the United States, this is an excellent time to evaluate your own heart health and consider altering your lifestyle. When looking at cholesterol lab results, it’s most likely that you received a lipid panel, meaning a lab that looks at all components of your cholesterol: total cholesterol, LDL (“bad” cholesterol),
HDL (“good” cholesterol) and triglycerides. If any component of your cholesterol is elevated by a certain amount, your health care provider will most likely advise you to begin exercising more and eating differently and they may want you to start a prescription medication. As far as supplements go, there are a few overthe-counter medications that have shown benefit in lowering various aspects of your cholesterol. Niacin (nicotinic acid) A vitamin that is shown to positively decrease LDL and increase HDL. When purchasing nicotinic acid, the immediate-release formulation is the most effective at
lowering cholesterol and is not as harmful on your liver as some other formulations. However, the immediate-release nicotinic acid is notorious for causing the side effect of flushing (when your face and body turns red and becomes warm). Some people find the flushing is lessened if you take the niacin with food. Fish Oil Fish oil’s main cholesterol benefit is in lowering your triglycerides. However, you need to take the supplement at a dose of 3 to 4 grams per day to see an effect. If you’re interested in beginning a fish oil supplement, keep in mind that there are hundreds of choices on the market. When picking a supplement, read the label to find one with the highest ratio of omega-3, and less omega-6 and omega-9. Cardiovascular benefits have been seen at amounts of at least 1 gram of omega-3 per day. Fish oil’s main side effect is causing a “fishy” aftertaste or burping. Some people find that storing the capsules in the freezer will cut back on the burps. Additionally, when starting this supplement, be mindful that it is an oil, meaning it contains fat. Because of this, it can have the unwanted effect of increasing your LDL. Red Yeast Rice Red yeast rice primarily decreases LDL and total cholesterol. This supplement is actually the active ingredient in the cholesterol lowering prescription medication known as lovastatin, and works the same way as statins to lower your LDL cholesterol. If you’re interested in starting red yeast rice, it’s important to consult with your physician. Because this medication is the same ingredient as prescription lovastatin, it’s often advised to receive a prescription medication instead. Prescription medications (unlike over-the-counter supplements) are highly regulated to make sure they’re of the correct quality and quantity that is displayed on the label. Because red yeast rice is a supplement, it may contain a different amount of the active ingredient in each pill and bottle you purchase. Common side effects of this medication include muscle aches or weakness.
