The BCHS Choir Program showcases talented students. By Emma Suttell

The students in the BCHS Choir Program are a talented group.

IN APRIL, the Boulder Creek High School Choir Program traveled to Burbank, California, to participate in the Burroughs Music Showcase for the first time in the program’s history. Led by directors Kirk Douglas and Nancie Tobison, Boulder Creek presented five choirs at the competition, including Bel Canto Honor Choir, Broadway Bound, Bella Voce, Heart and Soul, and the Madrigal Singers. BCHS’ three concert choirs came close to taking the top three places in their individual competition, with Bel Canto Honor Choir taking home second place, Bella Voce receiving third, and Madrigals earning fourth. Additionally, Bel Canto Honor Choir earned a special reward, Best Male Sound. Perhaps the most unexpected result of the competition came from Broadway Bound, Boulder Creek’s Mixed Show Choir. The choir, made up of a mix of students of all grades, placed third, an outcome that they never expected, since the Burroughs Music Showcase was the first competition with a show choir division that the Boulder Creek Jaguars attended. What exactly is show choir? Contrary to popular belief, it’s not quite like the popular television show, Glee, but the concept is relatively similar. Show choir combines choral technique with dancing, and for Broadway Bound in particular, a strong repertoire of selections from the musical theatre genre. Broadway Bound lept into competition with a set that told a story, an unusual move for West Coast show choirs, which usually focus on an upbeat set with lots of flair. Both of the high school’s show choirs, Broadway Bound and Heart and Soul, entered the competition with sets that were handpicked by Kirk and custom arranged for the performers. Heart and Soul, a show choir consisting of all female students, took home sixth place in their own division. Alongside their placement in the competition, one student in particular was awarded for her performance: Abby Davis, a senior in the program. The Best Performer Award named one student in each choir based on their in-the-moment performance; for Broadway Bound, it was sophomore Erin Burgard. The choirs have been working on their sets for several months, and for some, since the fall. The competition proved that their hard work paid off, but in the end, most students noted the newfound relationships with their peers that they had developed throughout the year. Although their concerts have ended for the year, you can look forward to four more concerts next year, one for each quarter of the school year. You can find more information about the program on bcjagchoir.com.

JUDGE GERALD A. WILLIAMS The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office was an early supporter of the Video Arraignment System. It was using significant time and money to transport incustody defendants in vans to 26 justice courts.

FOR PEOPLE with limited resources, the simple act of receiving a traffic ticket can start a series of events that has a devastating impact on their lives. An unpaid ticket, even if it’s for an alleged civil traffic violation, will likely trigger a driver license suspension. If they’re pulled over again, as of now, they’ll likely be charged with the criminal offense of driving on a suspended license. If that person’s car insurance has also expired, then their car will probably be impounded. The downward spiral can continue because without transportation, many will not even be able to get to work. Without a job, defendants can neither pay even minimal payments toward their criminal court fines nor even get to a courthouse. Even in urban settings, many courthouses are not on bus or mass transit routes. And, yes, judges frequently sign arrest warrants for failure to appear. Throughout Maricopa County, defendants were being repeatedly arrested in connection with unpaid misdemeanor fines. While they would often be given credit toward payment of their fines for time served, non-violent defendants were frequently serving several days in jail for offenses like driving on a suspended license

or for criminal speeding, even though none of them were originally ordered to jail as part of their sentence. There had to be a better way. Former Maricopa County Presiding Justice of the Peace C. Steven McMurry and Maricopa County Justice Court Administrator Jeff Fine examined and then championed the idea of expanding a video arraignment system and also putting a system in place to resolve open charges. With the Video Appearance Center (VAC), judges are required to be available at a specific time each day in the event someone has been arrested on a warrant they signed. Prosecutors and public defenders are also available. The VAC was arguably an overnight success. In the first 18 days, justices of the peace were able to see 434 defendants and were able to reduce jail time by 53 percent. The sheriff ’s office ultimately turned six vacant positions back to Maricopa County. There are often case-specific issues that pop up and the VAC requires ongoing coordination with representatives from the County Attorney’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office, and Court Interpretation and Translations Services. If a defendant

has open charges, a deputy county attorney and (when appropriate) a public defender will be notified. In many cases with open charges, a plea agreement can be negotiated at that time. Cases can be heard by

Cal AGE: 2

BREED: English Spot/ Dwarf Mix Bunny FAMILY: The Peters

BACKSTORY: A few weeks before Dana Peters was set to graduate from Northern Arizona University and move back to Anthem to live with her parents, she went looking for a pet. She found Cal online and picking him up from the Arizona Humane Society shelter in Norterra was the first thing she did when she got back into town. “We’ve been best friends ever since,” she says of the former stray.

DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS:

“He’s a really interesting guy. He’s very shy compared to other bunnies that I’ve met, but he’s also very curious. I’ve been teaching him how to do tricks. He’s a quick learner and very smart,” says Dana, who also calls him quirky and friendly, although not super social like a dog typically is. Dana points out that Cal sneezes a lot. “He’s not sick, he’s just sneezy. It’s just one of his personality traits, like one of the seven dwarfs.”

HOUSEHOLD ANTICS:

“Cal’s never going to learn how to come when I call because he has so many names,” explains Dana. He’s allowed to free roam in Dana’s bedroom, where he spends a majority of his time. Potty trained, Cal does his “business” in a litter box, which makes cleanup easy. “He’s got a cage and a play yard in my bedroom. I’m trying to convince him to hop up in my bed, but he’s not super interested in that,” says Dana.

FAVORITE ADVENTURES:

Cal shares the Peters household with an 11-yearold Yorkie named Lucky. While Cal doesn’t pay the family dog any mind, Lucky had a bit more interest in Cal initially and is now kept away from Dana’s beloved rabbit. “I don’t want Lucky to treat Cal as a snack,” says Dana. Meanwhile, Cal doesn’t get out much because he’s not leash trained. Dana’s little brother has taken a liking to Cal too. “He watches Cal when I’m out of town, which is not super often because I can’t stand to leave my bunny child,” says Dana.

PREFERRED TREAT:

“Lettuce, pellets, and treats. He really likes bananas and carrots, those are his favorite snacks,” says Dana, who points out that rabbits make fun and interesting pets and admits that they need special care. She also wants people to know that you can rescue rabbits from shelters, rather than purchasing them from a pet store. JUNE 2018

Mason

BACKSTORY: “Mason was born at the veterinary clinic I worked at via C-section. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the owners were unable to care for the litter of four puppies that required to be bottle fed often. I adopted Mason and his sister, Lily (a tri-color Sheltie), and a coworker took their brother and sister, Alex and Emily, who like Mason are blue merles. I woke up every two hours to feed the hungry puppies,” says Michelle Wheeler. “They were so cute they reminded me of gerbils. On Christmas day, Mason opened his eyes for the first time. Mason and Lily have many adopted siblings in our household: Jake a huskyshepherd mix, three cats (George, Sox, and Martin), and two human babies, Claire (2) and Danielle (1).” 20 || 85086MAGAZINE.com || JUNE 2018

AGE: 5 BREED: Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) FAMILY: The Wheelers DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS:

“Besides being one of the cutest dogs around, Mason is also unique because he is so sweet. His personality really is one in a million. I wish I could take credit for his amazing behavior, but it is 100 percent natural,” says Michelle.

HOUSEHOLD ANTICS:

“Mason's favorite thing to do around the house is to play fetch. The ball is his favorite thing! He is training Claire and Danielle to throw it for him; it is very adorable to watch,” says Michelle, who had to switch out tennis balls for soft rubber balls so that Mason doesn’t wear his teeth down. “He would play all day and all night if he could. He loves the fact that the girls' have a mini ball pit, because now he has a never ending supply of balls!”

FAVORITE ADVENTURES:

Mason has many adventures, according to the Wheelers. “One of his favorites is probably getting together with all of his siblings for a ‘puppy walk.’ We love going to Anthem park with Lily, Alex, and Emily and walking all four Shelties together. It is amazing how no matter how long it has been in between walks they all immediately know each other from across the parking lot!” Mason also accompanies Michelle to work almost every day. “Mason is our ‘office assistant’, he greets the clients from behind the reception desk, where he calmly watches the other animals come in and get checked out. The only time he gets up and starts bouncing excitedly is when someone goes near the cookie jar, he knows he might get lucky and get a treat,” says Michelle.

PREFERRED TREAT:

“Mason loves all food! He is extremely food motivated. His adorable brown eyes earn him more treats than his little body needs. I had to make a sign that says, ‘Do not feed Mason. Please resist his cute puppy dog eyes and bouncing’,” Michelle explains. Despite the sign he still gets spoiled at work so Michelle gives him green beans and carrots at home, which he loves.

Franny AGE: 8 BREED: Yorkie mix FAMILY: The Taddeos

BACKSTORY: “Franny came to me in February of 2010 from a shelter in Ohio. I was fostering dogs for a rescue group at the time, and she had been left in a drop box at the shelter as an 8-week-old puppy. They asked if I’d like to foster her and the rest is history,” says Gina Taddeo.

DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS:

“She has two furry brothers, Bruce and Romeo. Romeo is closer to her age and they could play for hours! She also has two kitty friends in the house, Enzo and Sophia. They also play with her and I have to wonder who plays the hardest,” says Gina. “She’s always been a very energetic playful dog and I’m so glad I said yes to foster her.”

FAVORITE ADVENTURES:

“Franny’s favorite thing in the world is to go for walks and look for bunnies. She’s all terrier and quite the tomboy! I’d never let her catch one but she is happy just to see them. Lizards too,” explains Gina.

PREFERRED TREAT:

“Franny loves ‘cookies’ of all kinds, but her favorite treat is called Thinkers,” says Gina. “They are sausage type treats and all I have to do is say ‘sausage’ and she runs to the pantry and sits very well to wait for it. She does lots of circus tricks, rolls over, plays dead when I say ‘bang’ and dances. But her signature move is to put her front paws together perfectly when I tell her to pray!” JUNE 2018

To Dad, with Love SURPRISE YOUR POP ON FATHER’S DAY WITH THESE HOMEMADE CRAFTS. By Shannon Fisher Photos by Shannon Fisher Photography JUNE IS HERE, which means Father’s Day is right around the corner. I know in 85085, there’re lots of great dads to celebrate. With that in mind, here are some easy crafts you can make at home to show your dad how much you care. Most of the materials can be found at the dollar store or a craft store.

Heartfelt Message Make a note for dad that is from the heart. We used the saying, “A Daughter May Outgrow Your Lap, but Not Your Heart.” We used a small box we found at the dollar store. We painted it and added some blue sparkly scrapbook paper to the center. We cut out the typed message and glued that on to the blue paper. You could paint a message on as well or even use sticker letters. Whatever you write to dad, I’m sure he will love the heartfelt message.

Tape Art Another way to create a message is by using colorful tape. We used a colorful craft tape to write the message, “I Love You Dad.” After the message is taped down, you can color over it with crayon or markers. We left the tape, but if you use blue painters tape, you can easily peel up the tape after the paint or markers have dried. You can frame the art or use a craft glue like mod podge to paste it to a wood board so that it stands up. Allow your art to dry and you have a unique lettered gift for dad.

Roll Up Card A roll up card is an easy craft for anyone to make. Take craft sticks and lay out how many you will need to write your message. Next, use a craft tape or hot glue string to each of the sticks, leaving a little space between each stick so that they can be rolled up when the message is complete. Tape or glue on both sides of the sticks all the way around. Next, use a permanent marker to write your message on each stick. Roll it up and tie it with ribbon or string for a special note for dad. I hope all of these crafts are easy for you to make for that special guy in your life. Wising all the local dads a happy Father’s Day!

After high school, without future plans, his father advised Mark to “pay your Uncle Sam a visit.” Mark wasn’t opposed to the idea and decided to enlist in the Coast Guard. He worked as a fireman aboard a patrol boat in Hawaii and was dispatched on a number of search and rescue missions and law enforcement duties. When Mark’s tour of duty aboard the ship ended, he applied for aviation training and was accepted into aviation machinist school. After graduating and being promoted to petty officer, he worked and flew primarily on C-130 “Hercules” aircraft. base of cooked rice noodles that are topped with shredded lettuce, carrots, cucumber, and bean sprouts. You can choose from a list of different proteins to add. It’s then finished off with a scoop of peanuts for added flavor and texture. The combo meal version, which we ordered, comes with two small egg rolls. While the other dishes we’d sampled thus far had been all mixed together in a broth or soup, this dish is packed tightly with ingredients, so you might need to eat your way through some of the toppings to get to the noodles. We couldn’t leave without trying the tangerine chicken ($9). It’s very similar to the orange chicken dishes that you may have experienced at other establishments, but only in concept. The sauce is much lighter in this version and has a stronger natural orange flavor, as opposed to the syrupy version you’re likely to find at other places. Here, the chicken pieces are lightly breaded, fried, and then sautéed with onions and a caramelized tangerine sauce. It’s served with steamed broccoli and white rice and a small lettuce salad with tangerine segments. This is a wise dish to order if you’re unfamiliar with Vietnamese cuisine, as it resembles a more mainstream Chinese dish.

If you’re a non-adventurous eater, the grilled chicken rice plate ($9) is for you. A plate of rice with grilled chicken is exactly what you’ll receive. The chicken is cooked with a nice char but leans toward the more bland side, since it’s only seasoned with salt and pepper. There is the option for a side dish of soy sauce or fish sauce. I would recommend adding a little bit of flavor, unless simple grilled chicken is what you’re looking for. The final entrée of the evening was the stir-fry beef with curry ($10.50). Featuring thinly sliced beef that is sautéed in a yellow

curry sauce with a bunch of delicious vegetables, there’s a mix of mushrooms, onions, carrots, celery, bell peppers, and broccoli. It’s garnished with fresh herbs and served with a scoop of white rice. This dish had some heat to it like the other curry dish, but again heat level on a palate is very subjective. This is a filling dish and full of fresh vegetables. While this spot has quite a few tables for in-restaurant dining, I noticed that Pho Saigon Pearl also seems to do a thriving takeout business. This spot is for real and I’m not just being Pho-ny.

Side effects to HRT are usually mild and subside after a couple of weeks of therapy but may include breast tenderness, headaches, bloating, spotting, acne, and fatigue. The most commonly used hormones in HRT include estrogens, progesterone, and testosterone and are discussed below. Some providers may also include the hormones DHEA and pregnenolone in compounded HRT, which also provide symptom relief and can be converted in the body into estrogens, testosterone, and progesterone.

QUESTION: My friend started experiencing hot flashes during menopause. Her prescriber gave her a compounded cream that had hormones; she said it was natural and better. When I had similar symptoms my prescriber put me on Premarin. Is there a difference? Are compounded hormones better since they are natural? ANSWER: Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a very personal decision that must include the prescriber, patient, and pharmacist to ensure that the most effective and safest therapy is chosen for each individual patient. HRT helps to treat the symptoms of menopause, which is when the body naturally decreases its production of estrogen and progesterone hormones. This drastic drop in hormones can result in symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue, irritability, mental fog, insomnia, low libido, headaches, and many others. Patients that have had partial or full hysterectomies may have similar symptoms. Luckily many patients are able to find relief from these symptoms with HRT. The hormones that compounding pharmacies use in their HRT formulas are better described as bio-identical. Bio-identical hormones are derived from plant sources such as wild yams, soy, and peanuts. They are called bio-identical because they are identical to the hormones your body produces. Bio-identical hormones are often referred to as ‘natural’ because they are derived from natural sources. However, they do have to go through a manufacturing process to be converted to powders in order to be utilized in the various dosage forms available for hormone replacement therapy. Synthetic hormones, like the ones found in birth control, are hormones that are made in a lab and are structurally different from the natural hormones our body produces. Because of this they may elicit a different response than bio-identical hormones. Premarin is a combination of estrogens derived from a natural source, pregnant horse urine, but is not bio-identical to humans. Horses produce different forms of estrogens and estrogen metabolites than humans do. Some contraindications for HRT include tobacco use and personal

ESTROGENS There are three main types of estrogen: estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3). Estradiol and estriol are normally prescribed to help with symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and vaginal wall thinning. Estrogens are also supportive of bone health and some evidence suggests it may be preventative for some cognitive disorders such as dementia. PROGESTERONE Progesterone (P4) is our natural relaxing hormone and is the hormone that helps sustain pregnancy. It also supports estrogen levels, decreases anxiousness, and improves sleep. Progesterone prevents endometrial lining overgrowth in the uterus and because of this many prescribers choose not to prescribe this important hormone in patients that have had a hysterectomy since the uterus is removed and there is not the potential for endometrial overgrowth. However, there is evidence to support progesterone therapy in women post-hysterectomy to support estrogen replacement, reduce anxiety symptoms, help moderate weight, or to help with falling/staying asleep. There is a significant difference between progesterone and synthetic progestins. Progestins are in birth control and some HRT for postmenopausal women. Progesterone and progestins have different efficacy and side effect profiles. For example, synthetic progestins are used in birth control and the morning after pill to prevent pregnancy, while bioidentical progesterone is used to maintain pregnancy (to aid in implantation of the egg, maintain pregnancy, and/or prevent premature birth). TESTOSTERONE This hormone is usually thought of as a male hormone, but women make testosterone in their ovaries and adrenal glands. Testosterone is commonly used in compounding preparations of HRT at low doses. It can be beneficial for those with low libido, daytime fatigue, mental fog, and loss of vitality. Finally, it’s important to point out that there are commercially available bio-identical options for hormone replacement therapy. These in-
