INTRODUCTION • Guinness World Records, known from its inception in 1955 through 2000 as The Guinness Book of Records and in previous U.S. editions as The Guinness Book of World Records, is a reference book published annually, listing world records, both human achievements and the extremes of the natural world. The book itself holds a world record, as the bestselling copyrighted book of all time. It is one of the most frequently stolen books from public libraries in the United States.

THE SHORTEST MAN • The shortest living man is Chandra Bahadur Dangi (Nepal) who measures 54.6 cm (21.5 in) tall as verified at CIWEC Clinic Travel Medicine Center in Lainchaur, Kathmandu, Nepal on 26 February 2012.
THE TALLEST MAN • The tallest man living is Sultan Kösen (Turkey, b.10 December 1982) who measured 251 cm (8 ft 3 in) in Ankara, Turkey, on 08 February 2011. • The part-time farmer was the first man over 8 ft (2.43 m) to be measured by Guinness World Records in over 20 years. • Indeed, GWR only knows of 10 confirmed or reliable cases in history of humans reaching 8 ft or more. • Sultan first became the world's tallest living man in 2009, when he measured 246.5 cm (8 ft 1 in) in height. • He took the title from Xi Shun (China, b. 1951), who measured 2.361 m (7 ft 8.95 in) in height when measured in 2005.
THE FATTEST WOMAN • The world's fattest man has revealed he has not been able to leave his home for the past ten years. • Keith Martin said he specifically remembers the last time he left the house was on 9/11. Since then he has ballooned to 58 stone and was recently revealed as the heaviest man on Earth. • Mr Martin, 42, has said his condition has driven him to the brink of suicide and is now desperately trying to lost weight so reduce his 6ft waistline.
THE LONGEST BASKETBALL SHOOT • The longest successful basketball shot measured 33.45 m (109 ft 9 in) by Thunder Law (USA) of the Harlem Globetrotters, at US Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, on 11 November 2013. • The attempt was in celebration of Guinness World Records Day 2013. The record was attempted by three different Harlem Globetrotters players, who all shot for one hour, until "Thunder" drained his opportunity at history. • "I can't believe I broke a record on Guinness World Records Day," he said. "Awesome."
THE OLDEST WOMAN •
The greatest fully authenticated age to which any human has ever lived is 122 years 164 days by Jeanne Louise Calment (France). Born on 21 February 1875 to Nicolas (1837 - 1931) and Marguerite (neé Gilles 1838 - 1924), Jeanne died at a nursing home in Arles, southern France on 4 August 1997. Jeanne Calment lived through many major events which shaped the world we live in today. These events occured in all areas of life; social, political, scientific and technological and a number within her home nation of France. She lived through two World Wars, the development of television, the modern motor car, aeroplanes and numerous other items which are taken for granted today.
