Credit Design: Responsible for the design of the tower, the design of associated podium, the design of Observatory, the design of master plan and associated park, structural design of the complex. Digital Model and Drawings: Established the Rhino file, assisted the Rhino to Revit re-modeling process, visualized most of the renderings and diagrams. Physical Model: Designed and built three physical study models final physical model.

Chicago's reputation of the "skyscraper city" has been challenged after the shut down of the Spiral, a 2000 feet residential tower design by Calatrava. Chicago desires a new landmark to secure its position. The project aims at exploring the relationship in between a super high -rise and its urban context while engaging with advanced construction technology.

Phase 1 INITAL CONCEPT Examinate the shape of the concept: Set back in the bottom, And expand at the top

Phase 2 BASIC FORM

Phase 3 CIRCULATION & STRUCTURE

Phase 4 MIDTERM

Phase 5 FINAL

Examine the usable footprint of each floor. This iteration suffers insufficient floor space for guest room though it represents the most ideal shape

Experiment the layout of elevators shaft and structure. Introduces mega column system into the design

Experiment the new structure design. The perimeter of the peak has a 35 ft overhang to exaggerates the expansion effect - like a sail

Last iteration which amends the perimeter after several optimizations and connects the podium with the to we r to a c h i e ve b e tte r g ro u n d circulation

EVOLUTION OF TOWER DESIGN 8

Phase 1 INITAL CONCEPT

Phase 2 CREATE GRAND GUESTURE

Phase 3 FINAL

The podium serves as a secondary, minor swing -out parts of the tower. Illustrates the connection with its surrounding urban fabric

Exaggerates the welcoming guesture of the podium (90 ft tall) to celebrate the entrance of the world's highest residential tower

Re-Evaluate the proper dimension of the podium, moves the ballroom below grade to liberate ground circulation

EVOLUTION OF ENTRANCE 9

Entrance Design Designing a skyscraper is making a statement towards the world, and making that statement itself is very difficult. Chicago always represents the power of technology and opportunity as the born place of Skyscraper. We have tried several different scale and gesture to represent this provocative spirit of Chi-town, and the evolution of these design iterations, especially when dealing with the relationship in between podium and tower, is the biggest obstacle. We have spent over one month and at least 20 iterations to find a rightful scale for entrance and podium, which would celebrate the world’s highest residential tower while don’t draw the public attention from it. T h e p ro p o s e d to we r h a s t wo s e t s o f f u n c t i o n s , private(codominium) and public(hotel & observatory). We design two different circulations to separate the public visitors away from the residents of the condominium. All visitors of the observatory and hotel ballroom would be dropped off from the southern entrance and enter from the podium. On the other side, guest of the hotel and the residents would enter separate lobbies which locate on east or west wing of the tower.

SECOND CITY SQUARE REVIVING SOUTH CHICAGO DISTRICT BY ESTABLISHING A SECOND CITY

Residential Complex, Theater Near South Side, Chicago, Illinois Arch 574 Professor Tierney Fall 2016

Second city square pays homage to McCormick place's miesian structure, but re-programs and re-formats it for the 21st-century. The ideas of modernism such as repetition or uniformity have been reinterpreted through the parametric approach which alters for greater differentiation. Besides, as chicago has the reputable comedy co m m u n i t y s e co n d c i t y, t h e p ro j e c t i s n a m e d after the square of 2, the second city square. By preserving the arie crown theater, providing additional new theaters with flexible and mixed-used would offer venues for experimental performance.

20

21

CONCEPT The pure grid and column system which Mies invented represents the ultimate architectural approach in the 1950s, and McCormick Place Lakeside Center, which is designed by Gene Summers, an apprentice of Mies, has succeeded the core of free flow plan. It offers the largest conference area in its time, but it could not predict nor satisfied the demand of current conference goers, despite it has the great potential to play a role in the newly developing South Chicago district.

3X3 EDUCATION CENTER DAYCARE + EDU-RESEARCH + ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 2018 ISoA Graduate Design Excellence Award Hornable Mention

Chicago, Illinois, Arch 573 Professor Murray Spring 2018 Graduate Studio Team Project Team: Yang Li / Ivana Rakshit

Two diagrams showing that Chicago and NYC have very different distribution patterns of kindergarten and elementary school. New York City has an elementary education system which is more mature than Chicago in their downtown area.

Chicago Loop is suffering a dramatic population change at the average expansion rate of 143% per ten years due to the re-urbanization movement. However, the Loop area does not have any facility which could accommodate the demand for early child education. Recent demographic change shows that, increasing numbers of young parents are moving from suburban areas to the Loop, making a well-equipped education institute critical to maintaining an urban lifestyle. In the meantime, the education programs of nearby Universities are in need of a school in which their college students can practice and engage new educational technique. Given this need, we purpose a new Early Child Education Complex which will focus on early education with a specification in the Fine and Applied Arts. The idea is to create a safe and fun learning environment for the urban children. The design is functionally and spatially divided into three parts. The top zone is the Elementary School (K-3). The kindergarten’s design tries to tap into the curiosity of young minds by encouraging active learning. Children learn from a combination of classroom and extracurricular activities. The lower school (Grades 1-3) operates across 11 floors. There are 4 home rooms per grade, each classroom is designed for a capacity of 20 students. There is one dedicated cafeteria space per grade, designed so they can be used for other purposes as well. There are dedicated rooms for art & design, music/orchestra, science lab and library. The playground accommodates a junior tennis and basketball court. The Daycare City, which locates in the lower level, caters to both short term and long term daycare facilities for children ranging from 0-10 years. The daycare facility is separated from the school by providing dedicated elevators. Besides, there are 4 Colleges of Education situated in downtown Chicago. The building welcomes trainee teachers with the idea that they will use the school as a laboratory.

Histroic Preservation, Visitors Center Plano, Illinois, Arch 576 Professor Kapp Spring 2016

The proposal for the Visitors’ Center is a Tent Structure, with the ex terior envelope constructed with Telfer membranes, enclosed with glass curtain wall and supported by steel posts and cables. The soft butterfly-like structure n o t o n l y a l l ows t h e d e s i g n to b e e a s i l y a s s e m b l e d and removable on-site; it provides special flexibility. Juxtaposed to the free open plan of Tent is a prefabricated bar structure. The overall layer of the membrane is intended to define a broader boundary to the surrounding environment, offers the opportunity to integrate and design the larger landscape, at the same time introduce diffused natural light into the interior from various directions.

The selected site location is behind Farnsworth House, surrounded by and hiding behind the wooded areas. The topography is slightly sloped downward towards the House, which allow the Visitors’ Center to be a high-point to observe the House and its context.

Farnsworth House Suffers From Flood Issue

There is a path between Farnsworth House and the Visitors’ Center, which forms a loop, which provides the experiences of walking through the woods, obtaining views from multiple angles to the house. The Visitors’ Tent Pavilion offers the grand image of upward-oriented membrane-roof, hanged Spider-Glass curtain wall, with glimpses of activities inside could be enjoyed at entrance.

Scientific Laboratory, Visitors Center Land End Point , San Francisco, California UC Berkeley Summer Arch[ADV] Summer 2016

Performing as a machine which is parasitic on the land end point, monster provide the researchers and tourists a multifunctional facility for maritime and ecological research. T h e fa c i l i t y, w i t h a d va n c e d e q u i p m e n t a n d m a r i t i m e equipment such as easy access boarding dock and underwater observatory, the monster is capable of accommodating seven researchers and artists for their practice. The shape of and the circulation of the system create an arrow which is indicating the direction of the mile rock, the maritime chapel. Maritime chapel is the very first religion facility that built on the riff .

The landscape of the Land End Points had been modified dramatically during construction in the 1930s. The ridge of the former hill, which indicating a virtual line in between the San Francisco Downtown and another critical site, the Mile Rock Lighthouse, had been removed. The idea of creating a highly flexible machine snake-like structure which descending from the hill to the cliff and finally dive into the ocean would be a suitable solution that satisfied the need for both scientific research and public scientific education, the symbolic meaning of the building would trigger visitors to recall the memory of the past. By consolidating the design concept with urban grid systems in San Francisco, the project intended to echo with the profound historical and geometrical relationships within a wider urban context.

TEAMOJI Local Start-Up Asian Cafe

Bubble Tea Shop, Bakery 617 Green St.,Champaign, Illinois Co-Founder, Designer Store Rennovation and Brand Design Established 2017 Me, Jerred and Alex are friends since freshman year. Alex, honored with the Bronze Tablet in Chemical Engineering when he graduated, has a strong passion for cuisine. Jerred, a natural born entrepreneur, believe that we can take advantage of the large Asian population in U of I. Me, a future architect, is always seeking the opportunity to design and build something entirely base on my will. We started our business in my 1st-year grad school when Jerred and Alex finished their master degree from UC Berkeley and Cornell. After a series of twists and turns, we took over a former grill bistro and established our brand: Teamoji. Here are some moments during the design and remodeling of our beverage shop.
