ear friends, we present to you a unique and special publication, CERSANEX Magazine, which is devoted to sanitary ware, ceramics and stone. We want to be surrounded by beautiful things in life, especially in the interiors of our own homes, which we return to after the working day. People work together to create beauty: artists and designers create projects, manufacturers and builders bring their ideas to life, and trade exhibitions and specialist magazines help to promote dialogue between all the participants in the process. CERSANEX Magazine is the only industry publication about sanitary ware, ceramics and stone for architects and designers. The first section of the magazine features exclusive interviews with leading European sanitary ware and ceramic manufacturers, who are developing collections to premier at MosBuild 2013. For the ‘Awards’ section, we have selected the most interesting winners of the red dot design award 2012 in the bathroom, spa, pool and kitchen category. Of great interest to readers will be the ‘Design Project’ section, where different stylistic and functional interior solutions can be created independently from the recommended accessories. I hope that CERSANEX Magazine will become a useful tool for your company and will contribute to the development of your business in Russia and the CIS. A new source of inspiration
P
ractice has shown that although annual face-to-face meetings at Cersanex MosBuild are a sure guarantee for achieving cooperation, industry professionals want to communicate and receive information about new products more than once a year.
CERSANEX magazine is a continuation of the dialogue initiated at MosBuild 2012 and showcases the best projects from both the last exhibition and the global industry as a whole. The news section of the magazine features new collections from designers and manufacturers of sanitary ware and ceramics, as well as interviews with developers and suppliers of leading brands from all over the world. In the ‘Trends’ section, we show the latest trends in design and decoration: imitation, vintage, gigantism and hi-tech. There are also exclusive interviews in the magazine with the well-known designers Anna Erman and Slava Valoven. We continue to publish MosBuild ArchiClub projects, presenting not only bathrooms, kitchens, pools, saunas, spa and other design solutions, but also offering the opportunity to choose the accessories from them. And, of course, we cover international industrial design and architecture contests. CERSANEX Magazine presents the most interesting winning projects and products. Among the well-known manufacturers that have received awards are the German firms Grohe and Villeroy & Boch; the Italian companies Elleci and Webert; Spain’s Aparici, Peronda and Porcelanosa; France’s Jacob Delafon; Poland’s Bisk; Switzerland’s Duscholux; Denmark’s Damixa; Japan’s Toto; and many others. CERSANEX Magazine is an opportunity to continue the dialogue between professionals from the architectural and construction industries. We hope the magazine will serve as inspiration for designers and architects, expand the range of product sales representatives, and be useful to building materials producers and all those interested in reliable and aesthetic construction.

Bringing la dolce vita to Russia Mr. Armando Cafiero, General Director of Confindustria Ceramica, shares his opinion of the Russian market with CERSANEX Magazine
H
ow does Confindustria Ceramica support Italian companies in Russia? Russia is a very important market for the Italian ceramics sector. In this period we are experiencing a difficult time in the internal market, so we are looking ever more at every possibility for exporting. Our companies react very well to opportunities in the export market and definitely Russia, in this sense, is one of the most interesting markets for our exports at this time, and the interest is definitely growing. The growth of Italian exports to Russia in the first semester of this year is in double figures, so it is very important that the association works closely with our member companies in our efforts to ensure growth. MosBuild is certainly the most important trade show in the Russian market and we have been constantly following our companies and creating a common structure inside the trade show to allow them to have a reference point, which is highly appreciated. In fact, at the last edition of MosBuild we were invited by our members to increase our investment, which is what we did, giving more attention to the design of our stand and improving the services that we offer to our members. The association also assists with collateral events, such as workshops and seminars, which are an important aspect of our activity. It is very important for us that the Italian Trade Commission is undergoing a substantial process of restructuring. We are confident that it is going in the right direction and we expect that, as happened in the past, it will support our initiatives in the main markets for our exports, and Russia is definitely one of those. What kind of products are most in demand in Russia? I would say top-of-the-range products. The Russian market is a very demanding market, so the challenge for our companies is to provide the best of their series - which in many cases are provided specifically

for this market - the products with the highest added value, to demanding customers, and they are pursuing this challenge with success. What is the perception of the Russian market among Italian ceramic tile manufacturers? Our view of the Russian market is that it is a growing market, a market where the characteristics of ‘Made in Italy’ – continuous innovation, attention to style, products which somehow incorporate the Italian way of life – are highly appreciated by customers. There is also an important segment of the Russian market that views Italian products as luxury products. But I think, in addition to this, there are Russian customers who see Italian products as incorporating Italian style, the Italian way of life, which is not necessarily about luxury, but more about good taste. Which I suppose extends from cooking to fashion and even to ceramics… Exactly. Cooking is one important part and also an appreciation of good wine. So do you think it is all of these components that make Italian ceramic manufacturing unique? Yes, this is true when we are talking about exports. But we also have some other companies that have invested in the Russian market as a producer and have an extremely well-established and recognised operation there. I think that they transmit to Russian customers the same sense of style, but also attention to the client in terms of services – and it is that combination which makes Italian products successful in the market. Does the association view MosBuild as a platform for Italian companies to enter the Russian market? Absolutely, we have been in partnership with MosBuild for many years. It has been a partnership full of dialogue, in the sense that we have always tried to stimulate growth in the service that exhibitors receive. Continuous improvement is what we expect from our MosBuild partners and this is what we are receiving.

Colour is key in Russia Mr Stefan Grimmeisen, SteulerFliesen Marketing Director tells CERSANEX Magazine about the company’s new products and their promotion in the Russian market
T
he Russian market is very important for our company, because our more colourful products are well suited to the Russian market, where bright colours are more popular than in the German market. We believe that there is more potential in the Russian market to grow sales of our products. We have some lines that fit very well with this market and we sometimes also manufacture some products specifically for Russia. As I mentioned, German consumers tend to be more reserved in their choice of colours and approach new things more cautiously, while Russian consumers are bolder in testing new products. To promote our company in the Russian market, every year we participate in the MosBuild exhibition and we have boxes and sample boards at retailers. For Steuler, MosBuild is a key exhibition not only for Russia and the CIS, but for the whole Eastern European market. In Russia, customers like our Young Bath line, which is a colourful tile collection featuring small animals and is designed specifically for children’s bathrooms. This is very much a niche market. Russia is an important part of our export business, and we want to grow our business in Russia. For this reason, we have exhibited at MosBuild for the past five years. We will present some new products at MosBuild 2013. For example, we have a new tile, LAPS, which is very innovative in that the tiles are overlapped to create a flat uninterrupted surface, with no visible joints. The LAPS tiles are all hand-made and can be used in any room to provide an elegant decorative surface. They work really well as a background for stoves and fireplaces. Another new series we are bringing to the market is CAPRANO. We started with the development of a floor collection and we intend to use CAPRANO to demonstrate our expertise in floors, which is a growing market in our industry. The tiles can also be fixed to walls, so the series is suitable for the entire home, providing a modern and elegant decorative solution. We design all our products in-house. In the design department there are about ten people who develop new products throughout the year. By participating in MosBuild we hope to make Steuler better known, so that people see us as a partner and a unique manufacturer of tiles. What makes us unique is that we work with our own designers, so we are not copying anybody. We make our own products, with our own style. The Young Bath and LAPS collections which I described earlier also utilise new technology, and this makes them innovative products. We look forward to meeting buyers and architects at MosBuild 2013.

Alberto Magrans: Russia becoming a top priority CERSANEX Magazine exclusive interview with Alberto Magrans Roca Group Senior Managing Director, Central and North Europe Division
H
ow important is the Russian and CIS market for Roca?
For the Roca brand, Russia is becoming one of the top priorities, because obviously it is growing very quickly, while other markets in Europe, which were traditionally important markets, are either stagnating or in crisis. In Russia, however, with the Roca brand, we are seeing very positive development. We keep growing as a result of the investment we made many years ago, but also because of our willingness to maintain this level of investment and because we are probably the most important international brand with local presence in Russia. We are a big family in Russia: more than 2500 employees and seven factories. This gives us a lot of muscle to develop our product positions in the market.

interview What percentage of your products is produced in Russia?

It varies by brand. There are local brands like Aquaton, Santeri and Santek, which are 100% produced in Russia. Then, for instance, there is Laufen, which is all imported to Russia. It is all made in Switzerland or Austria. For the Roca brand, we are probably now at about 40% production in Russia and 60% imported, mainly because of the cast iron and steel bath tubs that are produced in Spain. The volume of products produced in Russia is continually increasing, because we keep investing in expanding our factories and in adding additional products, like the faucet assembly lines and the acquisition of Aquaton one year ago.
For Roca, we will present products focused in the mid-segment that are well adjusted to Russian tastes. Our colleagues in the design department - we have several design departments throughout the world are increasingly integrating product briefings from the local team. As I have said, Russia is becoming more and more important, so this means right from the beginning Russian requirements are already integrated into the finished product. So for Roca there will be important new products, completely new collections, in the mid-segment.
How do Russian and European consumers differ? Do you manufacture any products specifically for Russia? Yes, we are now creating more and more product lines especially for the Russian market, because we recognise that the tastes of Russian consumers are relatively different and, in some cases, very different from other European markets. Our strength as a big group is in being able to customise, to adapt the global trends in design to local needs. What is Russian taste? In bathrooms it is quite different in the sense that the designs are much less minimalistic than in some countries in Europe. And then the colours are different. Russian customers really appreciate variety in the choice of colours, while in other European countries people just want white. When you go into the details, you realise it is much more than you would have expected. What products are most in demand in Russia? There is a lot of demand for the high-end ranges. Our Armani range, of course, is a niche product, so the numbers are not very big, but the interest generated is very strong and turnover is also good. Then, for instance, with Laufen, we’ve had phenomenal success in the most expensive ranges – Il Bagno Alessi and Palomba Collection are the bestsellers in Russia. So this proves that when you have a really state-of-the-art product it needs to be at a reasonably high price, and there is a very interesting market in Russia for such products. In general, in Russia we see a greater appreciation of the unusual and a willingness to spend slightly more money on a bathroom. What new products are you presenting for 2012-2013? We roll out all the new launches at MosBuild, which is becoming a very important fair, not only for the Russian market, but also for the whole region. We are dedicating big resources to MosBuild and we are preparing important new products across all the brands present in Russia, which will be presented at MosBuild for the internationals and locals. Our Russian colleagues will present the
As for Laufen, we will launch important new ranges, with an innovative, patented ceramic material developed by us. This is exclusive because it has been developed internally, together with German universities. The material will allow us to produce pieces that are up to 40% lighter, and it will also allow more extreme designs and shapes, imitating materials like metal. We are trying to bring a completely new look to sanitary ware. How do your collaborations begin with leading designers? Our desire is to always work with top international designers. We cooperate with very well-known designers who we normally use for each collection. Sometimes we repeat and sometimes it is just one project, simply because we are constantly looking for new ideas and this means there is a lot of rotation in the designers we use. There are many famous names behind our designs, like David Chipperfield, Stefano Giovannoni, Andreas Dimitriadis and many more. Do you plan to present the Roca Armani collection at MosBuild? Yes, it was already launched at MosBuild and the reaction was very positive. We are making an impact on this niche. The idea behind the Armani collection was to try to create a very high-end range using the designs and concepts of Mr Armani and the technology and capability in ceramics, in fact in all products, of Roca. What results do you hope to achieve by participating in exhibitions? Exhibitions are a very important vehicle for maintaining contact with existing customers, making contact with new customers in new territories, and for explaining new products to people. As for MosBuild, we are impressed with the evolution of the show in recent years, because it keeps upgrading the level and I think the organisational team is doing a fantastic job in improving the show. Our Russian customers appreciate it being there, as Russia is such a big country it is good for them to be able to go to one place, spend a few days there and see all the companies. That is why we are deploying big resources in MosBuild for all our brands, because it is becoming a very important event for us.

The difference between Russian and Italian ceramics is the price
F
or the Sokol Group, which comprises the Sokol ceramic factory and Glebychevsk stone processing factory, it has become a tradition to open the construction season at MosBuild, where the management of the company proudly presents the latest collections. 2012 was no exception. Andrey Koksharov, Sokol’s chief ceramic artist, shared with Cersanex Magazine the secret to the creation of the company’s new line. It is not only my designs, but rather our collective creative work that is produced at the Sokol factory. But we do not always share the same view. We discuss the design, and what we then offer our clients comes out of these discussions. Not all of what we like and want to see in shop windows ends up being made. Every year, 50-60% of what we plan is scrapped because of technological problems. For example, there is a collection (he points to a product on the company’s stand at MosBuild), which the conservative part of our team initially said could have only been thought up by a couple of lunatics! It’s fair to say that it is expressive, but it is also in demand. It is not our business to educate consumer tastes. We have to make the most diverse range of products to meet the requirements of the maximum number of people.

Given this, is the creation of a collection based on research or is it all pure inspiration? Of course, there are some tasks that are set by the commercial department. For example, this year we were tasked with making import substitution products. I have been participating in this exhibition for fifteenth years, and I, and all my acquaintances who have worked in this market all this time, have observed that Russian factories have grown so strong that it is not immediately obvious what stand you are at – an Italian or a Russian stand. The main difference is the price: the price of equivalent products from Italy or Spain can be five times higher than Russian products. This has led to our dealers starting to ask us to do import substitution – this is now a popular term in the Russian ceramics market. What does this mean? For example, say a certain collection sells at five thousand rubles per square metre and the inserts for it at six thousand. Dealers are asking us to make the same product, but for five to six hundred rubles. We take this on and it is now very important. But there are also collections created through inspiration. In the end, all of this goes into the concept of the collection, which will be adapted to the Russian market. Adaptation is always necessary, because it often happens that an Italian collection won’t suit our country. Of course, we do custom orders from stone and tile, picking the material and even the colour specifically for the customer, but the main products of our factories are produced in the thousands of metres and this affects the design.
That’s what I like about our market, the diversity. For example, there are some standard European perceptions of what is good and what is bad. And in Russia? There’s Moscow where it is all mixed – glossy tiles and matt tiles – and there is St. Petersburg, the North Caucasus, Kazan and so on. I really like this diversity. It allows us to produce a diverse range of products. It is a unique space for creativity. But the most difficult thing of all is choosing a tile for yourself! Are you preparing something especially for the MosBuild exhibition? All the collections that we present on our stand at the exhibition at the beginning of the season are made especially for this time. Today, you can see here all the new collections of ceramic tiles from Sokol, Eurostone agglomerative tiles based on quartz and products made of natural stone. It is important to note that these are not prototypes. All these tiles are already in warehouses, ready for transportation. We approach the MosBuild exhibition in the following way: we present only what the dealer, if he likes the collection, can order straightaway and not wait several months for while we start producing it, after having examined the demand for the new collection. True, we do not produce huge volumes immediately. Invariably, a collection will be scrapped. But, as soon as we have the volumes, we are able to meet the initial interest of dealers and customers. We look forward to seeing what Sokol will surprise us with at MosBuild 2013.

The hunting lodge project was created by the architect Slava Valoven and the interior artist Olga Tretyakova

There are three houses on the site: the main house, guest house and spa house, which has a swimming pool, hammam, Russian bath and a relaxation area. The building fits harmoniously into the landscape: going in you enter the guest area which comprises a lounge, billiard room and a kitchenette. The interior is decorated with a combination of ceramic mosaic tiles, metal (usually brass), carved wood, stained glass and authentic accessories – the designers have not missed a single component of Moroccan style. The central ornament of the billiard room is the unusual replica antique billiard table, which is covered with a red cloth. Most of the interior items were brought directly from Morocco: carved products from Lebanese cedar, embossed trays, brass door handles, delicate metal lamps, Berber rugs — everything breathes the heat of the Marrakech desert.
Sitting in the lounge you can comfortably observe the blue water below. A fifteen metre long swimming pool with waterfall, hydro massage and counter flow is located on the level below in a spacious area. The floor in the swimming pool hall is laid with Mexican coquina, one of the few stones that have the property of water absorption and thus prevent slipping. The ancient tiles used in the interior of the spa house store the prints of prehistoric life. A particularly complex and valuable element of the dĂŠcor is the grill that borders the pool and is made from the same coquina stone. In addition to its aesthetic function,

it has a purely practical one: water from the pool, which is flush with the floor, goes into the grill instead of spilling over onto the floor. The swimming pool is as close as possible to nature: by opening the hall’s doors you access the outdoor terrace. But the most unusual interior item is, of course, the see-through fireplace! You can open the doors, light the fire and listen to the waterfall while enjoying the warmth of natural stone – all four elements are at your service! Through the see-through fireplace you can see the Eastern style interior of the hammam. The walls and floor of the Turkish bath are lined

with Eastern patterns, and light comes from a round window with colourful tiles. The steam room has the traditional vaulted ceiling, so that condensate cannot drip, but instead gently trickles down and exits through the drainage system. By the walls are heated marble benches, along with a sink with cold water. In the hammam the procedure is gentle: 30-55 degrees in the steam room and then washing. In the spa house’s Russian bath a wood-burning stove heats the room up to a much higher temperature, and the interior made from natural logs, which is typical for Russia.

Having warmed up in the sauna, you can cool off in the icy plunge pool, which has a multi-coloured backlight for colour therapy, or you can douse yourself from the tub hanging under the ceiling. Despite the variety of functions and traditions of the spa house, Slava Valoven was able to
unite all its parts into a single composition. The icy plunge pool sits harmoniously alongside the Turkish steam bath, as does the golden mosaic on the floor with the Berber rugs. Through the project, a part of the distant African country of Morocco has settled in a Russian blockhouse.

news Roca London Gallery by Zaha Hadid receives award
In June 2012, the Roca London Gallery received a prestigious Design Week Award for innovation in design. The gallery for the ceramic giant was designed by the world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid. The jury commended not only the architect, but also the client for commissioning the project: ‘We have a lot of respect for the client on this project. Completely immersive, beautiful design. Incredibly ambitious, brave and inspiring.’ Since 2009 it has been possible to learn about the Swiss brand and its products at the LAUFEN Forum, which is located in Laufen, in the canton of Basel (Switzerland). The building is unique and innovative in terms of its architecture and the building technologies used in its construction. The exhibition centre is designed in accordance with the main principles of the brand: a harmonious balance in water and energy consumption, and respect for the environment. The building is well insulated and consequently consumes little energy, requires minimal additional heating and does not use air conditioning. Natural light enters the building through skylights in the roof. From above, it is easy to see in the contours of the building the sink from LAUFEN’s Palomba
collection. From ground level, the building is reminiscent of an organic sculpture carved from concrete. The exhibition centre is open for architects, builders, distributors and sellers. Everyone can discover the world of modern and avantgarde bathroom design at the centre. The Forum houses the LAUFEN Bathrooms AG training centre. Various seminars are held here to train groups. Training sessions also take place in the Sky Gallery in Wilhelmsburg, Austria, and in Znojmo in the Czech Republic. The LAUFEN Forum has won the prestigious Swiss Award for Marketing + Architecture 2010, the Green Good Design Award, and the ‘best architects award 2011’ in the category ‘Business and Industrial Buildings’.

hand-made Aesthetics in stone Stone is, perhaps, synonymous with longevity. It is not without reason that it has been used since the dawn of time to depict great events and to construct grand buildings, which we still admire even now. Today, when we speak about aesthetics out of time, we again turn to natural stone, since there is such a range to choose from, and our ability to give this hard material an elegant shape has been enhanced by modern technology.
Among the Russian companies ready to immortalise your house in marble or granite is Domoff Group. The company produces decorative facade elements, fences and columns with decorative carvings, repeating the art of the old masters. The precise detailing of the smallest pieces gives the products special appeal. Among the products of Domoff Group there are also elements of interior decoration in the tradition of aristocratic homes. Stairs, carved countertops, panels and fireplaces, inlaid floors, bathroom decoration - all this is done on a custom order basis from marble, granite or travertine.

Ceramics as art In search of inspiration for their ceramics, the designers from Tagina turned their attention to the distant past, to ancient times. Ancient artistic and manufacturing techniques are reflected in each of the Tagina collections. The entire mural is done by hand: from the refined techniques of wall painting with encaustic paints to the grotesque painting of the Renaissance era, from colour mosaics to charming frescoes. All of these ancient traditions are combined with ancient technology in the laboratories of Tagina, where the designers constantly experiment, trying to bring to modern manufacturing the ancient techniques of ceramic production. Many of the products made by hand are unique. Some patterns are unrepeatable. The use of ancient production techniques gives Tagina’s products a unique value in the world of modern stamped ceramics.

news Porcelain tiles – the material of the future! Porcelain tiles are the future of construction and architecture. The Italian architect Maurizio Papiri is convinced of this. In May, he delivered a master class in St. Petersburg in support of the architectural competition ‘Porcelain Tiles in Architecture’ organised by ESTIMA. About 100 representatives of the St. Petersburg architectural community and guests from Moscow participated in the workshop. Maurizio Papiri, who is known throughout the world for his hotel projects, began the master class by talking about his studio in the centre of Rome. The studio specialises in developing projects for the construction and restoration of the world’s luxury hotels. The following reconstruction projects have been completed under the leadership of Maurizio Papiri: Grand Hotel Excelcior (Rome, Italy), Hotel Ritz (Paris, France), Hotel Exedra (Nice, France), Beau Rivage Palace (Lausanne, Switzerland), Imperial (Vienna, Austria), Hotel Alfonso XIII (Sevilla, Spain), and Hotel Carlo IV (Prague, Czech Republic). The master class by Maurizio Papiri in St. Petersburg was the third gathering between well-known architects and Russian planners organised by ESTIMA in support of the architectural competition ‘Porcelain Tiles in Architecture’.
Ergonomics Italian-style The Italian manufacturer Artesi is offering new furniture products for the bathroom: ON24 and ON27 from the Onyx Series. Ergonomics and design are the basis for the Artesi bathroom concept. Laser precision from Germany Z-LASER, a German manufacturer of alignment lasers that are used widely in natural stone processing, has introduced two new product lines. ZM18B are lasers for industrial applications and can easily be integrated into different equipment. In addition to these lasers, the ZM12B line has been launched, which is compact and affordable. The new lasers have a clear focus and power up to 200 mW. The lines include waterproof models with green or red light.

Elite collection, Piemme Valentino
n increasing number of famous fashion houses now have a Home division for developing the new area of interior design. Under the brands of famous fashion designers, today collections of exquisite floors, ceramics, wallpapers, textiles and accessories are being created. In line with this trend, at the MosBuild exhibition more places are being occupied by representatives of high fashion. In 2013, Valentino will join list of familiar names present at MosBuild each year: Versace, Cavalli and Armani. The Italian company Piemme is preparing to present ceramic and porcelain tile collections designed with the Valentino fashion house.
MosBuild presents: an interior by Valentino The collaboration between Piemme and the Valentino studio began in 1977. Since then, the design of Piemme’s ceramic products has become even more elegant and refined, gaining recognition around the world, especially among women. The Piemme Valentino brand embodies a unique, truly Italian style: Valentino style. The brand has never ceased experimenting with colour, pattern and texture in its tiles, producing more and more new collections.

atural forms and lines are harmoniously intertwined in the unique minimalistic design. A new technological solution was developed specifically for the mixers to save water: the nozzle is like a shower head, comprising 90 individual jets at the end of the spout. This creates a soft and full flow of water covering a large area. The Axor Starck Organic collection consists of 40 products for each functional area of the bathroom. In the basin mixer line there are four different types of height and wall mounting solution. Mixers and thermostats for the bath tub and shower are available in external and flush mounted versions. A line of accessories completes the collection.

Freedom of expression according to Ross Lovegrove Freedom is what we are all looking for but do not have enough of. We are prepared to fly to the ends of the earth in search of freedom, but who would have thought that it could be found so close - in the bathroom
U
nder the brand of the Turkish company VitrA, the famous Welsh industrial designer Ross Lovegrove has created Freedom, a unique collection of sanitary ware for bathrooms. ’The bathroom is not a place of basic necessities but a sacred oasis where you can recuperate after the chaos of the outside world,‘ says the designer, ’where well-being returns from contemplation of fluid biomorphic forms and from a feeling of initiation to the world of high art, the world of the artist, and where materials and technology have combined to become functional and affordable works of art.‘ Indeed, the asymmetrical ceramic products by no means resemble bidets, sinks and toilets. They are more like sculptures. To create this collection, consisting of five items, the designer took five years. However, it was time well spent. Freedom is Ross Lovegrove’s third collection for VitrA. The first was the Istanbul collection, for

which the designer was inspired by the Turkish capital, located at the crossroads of Eastern and Western civilisation. Ross then created the minimalist MOD collection - not just minimalist by design, but also by essence. Working on this collection, Lovegrove studied technologies that allowed water consumption to be saved and costs to be reduced for production of the sanitary ware. In the end, having reduced the firing time for the ceramics, he significantly lowered its cost on the shelves.

Ross Lovegrove, holder of a Master’s degree from London’s Royal College of Art, began his career working in studios in Stuttgart and London specialising in industrial design. Having become a member of the Atelier de Nîmes, he advised companies such as Dupont, Cacharel and Hermes. In 1986 Ross returned to London, where four years later he opened his own office, naming his company Studio X.

Dima Loginov: a Russian designer for western brands

ima Loginov is one of the few Russian designers to have achieved recognition in the west. He has created collections for world famous brands – including VitrA, Microsoft and Studio Italia Design – and has also won several awards. In 2012, Dima Loginov won two of the most prestigious design awards: the iF Product Design Award and

Water Jewels collection by architect Matteo Thun
O
ne of the most striking exhibits at VitrA’s stand at MosBuild 2012 was a series of decorative, and at the same time very practical, basins from the Water Jewels collection designed by the Italian architect Matteo Thun. In 2012, the series was complemented with models of unusual shapes, sizes and colours. The basins in platinum, gold and copper colour are available in versions with pearl patterns painted on the inside, which develops the theme of the Vogue wall tiles by VitrA. The new two-colour models bring a fresh touch to the bathroom. The Water Jewels basins go perfectly with the new Gala Classic furniture collection from VitrA, which is characterised by attention to
detail. For example, the legs of the cabinets are finished in shades of gold, copper and chrome. The furniture from the Gala Classic series is an ideal solution for those who prefer the classic style and functionality. Carlo Colombo: an architect of form
T
he famous Italian designer and architect Carlo Colombo is the art director of two companies, regularly participates in international exhibitions and conferences, and even teaches at the University of Milan. This busy schedule does not prevent him from regularly presenting collections of new products, which surprise everyone with their original simplicity. Carlo Colombo has worked with such brands as Moroso, Antonio Lupi, Poliform, Varenna and Flou. According to the designer and architect, he is equally interested in designing both skyscrapers and free-standing countertop wash basins. The world knows Carlo Colombo as the creator of the Archimede bed and Zigo Rustic carpet for Cappellini, and the Tender wash basin (Elle Decor award) and Nicolo table (MD magazine

designers Award) for Poliform. But Carlo Colombo has designed completely unique products for bathrooms: taps with strong lines and bath tubs with unusual geometric shapes or only 12mm thick. Last year, the CUNA bathtub, which was developed for the company Antonio Lupi, was presented at an exhibition. The bath is shaped like an armchair with a backrest and armrests. The CUNA bathtub is attractive as well as comfortable: the backrest can be tilted, and the depth and shape take into account human physiology. The bathtub allows you to fully relax after the working day.
The flagship of the Antonio Lupi brand in recent years has been another development by Carlo Colombo: the MATERIA collection of sanitary ware, furniture and accessories for the bathroom in a variety of shapes and sizes. The collection includes freestanding and built-in countertop washbasins, bathtubs, bidets and toilets, wall cabinets, taps, mirrors and lights. With the MATERIA collection, the designer, of course, focused on materials: stone, glass, wood and stainless steel. Simplicity of form is predominant in all the products, and the technical details are carefully hidden. For Teuco, Carlo Colombo created Milestone, a luxury wash basin from marble. The sink has an original, simple and elegant design. The flat basin shape, long linear drain, smooth corners and, of course, the texture of the natural stone once again demonstrate the unique style of Mr Colombo.

Ceramic bamboo from Spain Looking to create a bamboo garden at home? This is now possible thanks to the new Bamboo collection from the Spanish company Ceramica Mayor. The ceramic product perfectly imitates real bamboo stems, giving a feeling of comfort and tranquility. The ceramic cylinders, which have a diameter of 0,5 cm and maximum length of 1,6 m, are available in four colours: green, green-brown, yellow-brown and natural yellow. Pasion is the name of a ceramic tile collection from Spain’s Ceramica Latina. The collection’s main feature is a large mural inspired by Gustav Klimt’s painting The Kiss. The founder of Austrian Art Nouveau, Gustav Klimt is considered a genius of eroticism. The collection combines wall and floor tiles. Each of the two wall panels (150 x 60 cm) consists of six elements measuring 25 x 60 cm. Small metallic specks and fine lines in the embossed glaze create an interesting texture.

But the word ‘hi-tech’ has remained and moved more into design. Any technological design is called hi-tech, from interiors to architecture, even though the functionality of these hi-tech items is often quite primitive. The main thing is the hi-tech style. Recently, though, the original meaning of the word ‘hi-tech’ has begun to return. Now, if a tile is described as hi-tech, it either has a built-in microchip and the ability to adjust the level of humidity in a bathroom, or some other hi-tech feature
3D wall tiles from Lithea With the new stone working technologies utilised at Lithea, the designer Fabio Fazio has created original tiles made of natural stone: the Curve, Dune and Petali collections. The 3D wall tiles from Lithea have a striking appearance. Despite the seeming simplicity of the design, the collections change interior spaces, creating an original effect of depth and volume.
Light from the inside The idea of combining water and light was born long ago, but this is the first time it has been done so elegantly. A unique extension of a line of bathroom developments from ACO Haustechnik, the ACO E-Illumination Shower Drain is a drain hole for shower rooms with lighting. The drain casing with integrated lighting is made from stainless steel. The grating can be formed from two materials glass or steel. The mixers are made in a minimalist design; the bath, which fills with water through an internal valve, demonstrates the unique technology of Armani / Roca, which has not been used before. Due to the innovative island design, the surrounding walls of the bathroom can be completely free of any other accessories.

According to European standards, baths and other sanitary equipment in public buildings should be adapted for people with disabilities. The new Viega flush system consists of only five components: a control unit, actuator, power supply, connecting cable and mounting kit. If, depending on the design of the folding handrail, a button with radio control is used, the system can be fitted with a radio receiver. The flush, large and small volumes (6 litres and 3 litres), is operated by an electronic device, depending on the button used. It is also possible to choose a conventional Viega cistern, individually adjustable to three different flush volumes. The new Viega electric flush can be fitted in several stages to already existing equipment adapted for people with disabilities – providing more comfort without loss of function. The electric flush is suitable for use both in public facilities with high usage and in private bathrooms where design is paramount.
innovations Horizontal shower from Donbracht Donbracht is known for its research into innovative products and is now offering a unique horizontal shower, which consists of two slabs, the upper of which has six shower panels fitted to it. The user can sit or lie on the lower slab. The water panels are remote controlled. The horizontal shower is programmed to several different water effects: relaxing, stimulating or anti-stress. All the programmes have pre-set temperature settings and water jet pressure. Everything that you need is conveniently located on the heated horizontal slab, leaving you to enjoy your personal water massage.
Showerbasin Roca is offering a smart solution for the bathroom – a shower and basin combined in one unit – which reorganises the bathroom layout. For ease of care, the shower screen is made with an innovative coating called Maxiclean. In addition, the main elements of the shower room, the sink and shower tray, are made from a unique material known as Styltech, which, while lightweight, provides strength and durability. The collection is completed with an easy-to-use integrated mixer, thermostatic shower column, special lighting and anti-fog mirror.

The Sirex Electrosink from Elleci S.p.A. (Italy) is a kitchen sink that combines electronic features with clean design. The sink is made from Vitrotek 3G (glass particles and special resin), which provides a smooth finish. The sink is equipped with the S.I.R. draining system, which ensures the the rapid drainage of water while saving space under the sink. The designers, Elleci Team, have abandoned traditional drain valves in the Sirex Electrosink, which is easy to install and clean. It is also fitted with a special stainless steel plate to protect it from heat.
New product to protect pipes from leaking Hermann Sewerin GmbH (Germany) and the design company DWX Thiele have launched an electro acoustic water leak detector, the AquaTest T10. The set comprises the detector and radio headphones, which means no more cables getting in the way. The headphones are activated by a special sensor area. The AquaTest T10 has a display where the noises that are recorded are visualised in digital format.
In the groove With the Minta Kitchen System tap, Grohe AG (Germany) has remained true to the German desire for perfect proportions. The Minta tap has a simple cylindrical shape, with improved proportions. The groove structure of the ProGrip surface, coupled with the ergonomic water supply valve, ensures ease of use and protection from unsightly fingerprints.
awards Innovative design Another product from Blanco GmbH + Co KG (Germany) to be awarded a red dot award is the Blancovonda Mixer Tap. The smooth, streamlined shape of the Blancovonda tap is emphasised by a number of sophisticated details. For example, the water control lever is mounted at the front of the tap, making it easier to use. Another distinctive feature of the Blancovonda tap is the high spout, which has a pleasant-to-touch Softgrip surface.
An unusual form and smooth surface are key elements in the design of the Blancomodex-M 60 Sink Module from Blanco GmbH + Co KG (Germany). The sink was designed by Brigitte Ziemann. The cubic form and raised edge, coupled with high tap and generous drainer, which slopes in two directions, make this model stand out from others. In addition, the sink is equipped with a chopping board and CapFlow outlet cover.
Blanco GmbH + Co KG (Germany) present the Blancoandano Kitchen Sink, designed by Brigitte Ziemann. The Blancoandano sink has an attractive appearance, combining clean lines, smooth corners and a rectangular form, which makes the most effective use of kitchen space. With a depth of 19 cm, the sink is equipped with a hidden, easy to clean overflow and basket strainer. Among the special features of the sink are a multifunctional colander, sliding chopping board, attachable drainer and elegant outlet cover.

awards Twin taps The Twintaps Mixer Tap and Boiling Water Tap, created by Peteri B.V. (Netherlands), combines a normal mixer tap with a boiling water tap. One of the taps instantly provides water heated to 100°C for making hot drinks, blanching vegetables or washing utensils. The boiling water tap is fitted with a safety device for children.
Eastern harmony Ningbo Oulin Kitchen Utensils Co. (China), with the help of designer Guo Fang Xie and precise welding technology, has created the double-bowl FR601 Sink. The model is made of stainless steel and is fitted with a drain system. The sink also has a small basket strainer for waste and a built-in knife holder, which gives the product excellent functionality.

Zehnder Group Produktion Granichen (Switzerland) has launched a new radiator, Zehnder Fina. The designers, Tribecraft, have thought about every detail. The exterior is made in the form of a light smooth rectangle, which, on the one hand, isolates the heating surface (only 22 mm wide) and, on the other hand, blends the radiator with the wall. The radiator quickly provides cozy warmth to the bathroom and a built-in towel rack provides extra comfort.

Smart heat The Nest Learning Thermostat from the Nest Labs (U.S.) provides automatic temperature control in an energy efficient mode, without the need for regular settings. The Nest, which was designed by Tony Fadell and Ben Filson, maintains individual user preferences, taking into account both the originally specified parameters and additional manual adjustments of temperature. Furthermore, the thermostat’s built-in sensors recognise when the house is empty, switching the Nest to an energy-saving mode.
awards Compact bathroom The Geberit Monolith sanitary module from Geberit Vertriebs GmbH (Germany) and the design firm Tribecraft AG combines everything that you need for washing in one unit. A sink with a mixer tap is fitted to a glass surface, which already includes all the necessary elements: fasteners, a towel rack, a storage compartment behind a sliding door, additional shelves and more. Despite the number of different elements, the Geberit module is very easy to install.

The designers Kuba Gurnik and Magdalena Kiekiewicz from Colorofon have created the Futura collection in a classic chrome design and in a stylish black colour. German economy The Edition 11 Bathroom Furnishing Collection from Keuco GmbH & Co (Germany) is an innovative design concept for luxury interiors. The designers, Dominik Tesseraux and Anke Salomon from Tesseraux + Partner, have used a modular installation, thereby providing maximum freedom of design. The basic principles of the collection are simplicity of form and a minimum of detail. The result is maximum free space.

Harmony of space from Villeroy & Boch The new BathTray from Villeroy & Boch (Germany) combines natural elements and modernity. The designer, John de Groot, has created a free space around the bath for storing small towels and toiletries. The design makes use of a material with the texture and colour of oak, which gives it a special appeal, and there is an attention to details such as flattened corners, to ensure optimum comfort. The designers Chris Hegeman and Johan de Groot have developed the Loop & Friends Bathtub Collection for Villeroy & Boch. Based on two shapes, oval and rectangular, there are 22 baths in the collection. The variety of models allows customers to choose a tub for any bathroom. One of the attractive design solutions in the Loop & Friends collections is the extended edging of the bath, which serves both as a place for fitting a tap and as a basis for shelves. The soft headrest and ergonomic seat provide maximum comfort when using the product.
Functional elegance The Power & Soul Hand Shower Collection is a series of shower handles from Grohe (Germany). The design of the collection combines the familiar aesthetics of the brand with many functional elements. The handle has a seven-degree mode transition (from spray face to massage jets). The new Outline Bathtub is the result of a collaboration between Teuco Guzzini (Italy) and the designer Carlo Colombo. The main feature of the Outline bath series is the patented water supply system. The traditional hydromassage nozzles have been replaced by thin slits. The slits are back-lit, which not only provides an unusual play of light, but also offers the option of chromotherapy in eight differrent shades.
Floral motifs The Aria Washbasin Mixer from Webert (Italy), which is designed by Massimiliano Settimelli, has an elegant form which reminds one of a flower stem bent by the wind. The tap’s spout is located under the lever, and the flow of water resembles a cascade.

Sweet Sauna Pro Finnish Sauna: Finnish traditions, Italian design Sweet Sauna Pro by Starpool (Italy) and designer Cristiano Mino is a traditional Finnish sauna brimming with innovation. The interior of the sauna is made of bog oak with LED lighting. The front wall is made of heat-resistant glass, which provides good sound insulation and, at the same time, a view of the space outside. A stylish heater maintains the desired temperature in the sauna. Starpool produces several models of Sweet Sauna Pro in different sizes.

Kohler Daryl (UK), together with the designers Simon Browning and Gary Kington, has launched the Daryl Torsion shower cabin. The smooth lines of the glass and aluminium structure look unusually elegant, and the built-in shower seat and the shelf provide added comfort. The flushmounted fittings make the Daryl Torsion shower cabinet impeccably smooth. Another advantage of the model is it is easy to clean.
Fechner GmbH + Co. (Germany) has presented a new sauna, Pattern of Growth. To create a special atmosphere, the designer Eberhard Waldenmaier used hundred-year-old tree trunks for the interior. A special manufacturing process and artistic workmanship preserve the natural form of the trunks, including the tree rings. The benches, made from solid pine, create a contrast with the purist style of the walls.

Lightweight comfort The Collection 3 Shower Enclosure by Duscholuxr (Switzerland) is frameless. Flat hinges, chrome-plated metal wall brackets, slimline crossbars and an innovative handle result in a lightweight design. The fittings also follow the overall design concept of Designit Munich GmbH: calm colours and rounded forms conceal technical features.
Economy and design
Art underfoot The designer Christiane von der Laake chose multi-coloured slate as the material for the Emotion Ceramic floor tiles from Agrob Buchtal GmbH (Germany). The mixture of tiny crushed stone pieces creates a unique colour scheme. The technology used in the manufacturing process makes the Emotion Ceramic tiles resemble platinum plated stone slabs.
The Antero urinal is the result of a collaboration between Laufen Bathrooms (Switzerland) and the Italian designer Toan Nguyen. The design combines clear defined outer edges and an organic inner form. The ceramic siphon cover is integrated into the product. The geometric form of the Antero urinal prevents splashing. A combined flushing system provides different ways to clean the urinal, using just one litre of water.

The Mars Walk- In Bathtub developed by Bathroom Design Co. (Thailand) is a new type of bath, suitable for all age categories. An entry door and built-in seat make the Mars bathtub indispensable for elderly and disabled people. The bathtub provides a number of therapeutic spa treatments, which help to relieve muscle pain and tension, and stimulate circulation. A built-in foot massage starts within 30 seconds after the bath starts to fill, and a water pump means the tub fills and drains in only 5 minutes. In addition, the tub has a builtin alarm and SMS system for emergency calls.
Health concept The WS Health Toilet from Gural Vit Heris Seramic veTurizm San (Turkey) and designer Ramazan Atasever combines the two basic toilet types: the one on which a person sits and the other which requires a squatting position. WS Health effectively corresponds to the structure of the human body: in a sitting position the angle of the feet to the toilet is 90째, and in the squatting position the angle is 40 to 60째. The second position compresses the abdominal muscles, which most effectively cleanses the body, providing good health and preventing disease.

International architectural events at MosBuild The organisers of MosBuild are pleased to announce that the event’s 2013 business programme will include the award presentations of the MosBuild Architecture & Design Awards (MADA) and the international architectural competition ‘ArchCeramica. Ceramics and Architecture’
For the second time, ITE Group and the ArchiEurope communication network are organising the MADA competition, which is open to architectural students and young architects (under 45 years of age) from any country in the world. Like last year, the competition will have two categories: • Best architectural solution for creating an accessible environment • Best sustainable architecture project. Individual and group projects are being accepted until 7 March 2013. The winners will be chosen by a jury of leading Russian and international experts, including Gabriel Hyde, Director of Arup in Russia; Paul Jolie, President of the French Council of Disabled People; architect Andrey Asadov; and others. The 5th ‘ArchCeramica. Ceramics and Architecture’ international competition, organised by ITE Group, together with the International Association of Unions of Architects and Sovremenny Dom magazine, is open to architects, designers and builders from Russia and member countries of the IAUA. Bathroom by Anna Erman: irony in the interior In the mornings, after we are woken by our alarm clocks, most of us head straight to the shower. The door to the bathroom is, perhaps, the first that we open in the mornings. In the bathroom are the usual mirror, tap, toothbrush and set of items that are familiar to everyone. Many people want to transform their bathroom into a fully-fledged room, to make it individual, and some refurbish it to an elite level

he well-known designer Anna Erman knows what to begin with when decorating a bathroom. The first thing to do is to determine the size of the future home spa. What can you afford: a small shower cabin or something larger?

But the most important thing is to make sure that the room has a window to allow in light. Unfortunately, windows are increasingly absent in bathrooms. In Moscow, with the gravitation to global trends, the approach to bathroom design is not so different from the Soviet era – dark and cramped. The absence of daylight has an impact on the perception of the interior and, of course, on the design of artificial lighting. Another important point: pipes, plumbing fittings, radiators and other such items need to be concealed! Furniture, mirrors and pictures take on the function of a screen: no one will guess what is sometimes hidden behind them. Indeed, pictures are often present in bathrooms, because today in many homes people not only try to make their own bathroom as pleasant and comfortable as possible; they also provide a separate bathroom for guests. This is not so much a functional room as a ‘portrait’ of the financial status of the homeowner, so a designer’s creative ideas are quite appropriate here. Luxurious chandeliers, exclusive sanitary ware, pedestal sinks and mosaic panels have begun to appear in bathrooms.

Mosaic tiles. Anna Erman prefers to use tiles to create pictures and avoids their traditional use for covering walls. In modern building, sealant is applied to the joints, but sealant is a very short-lived material. Within half a year to a year, the lines between the tiles begin to darken, spoiling the whole appearance. The same approach is used for the positioning of the sanitary ware: the sink and bath are generally freestanding, so that they do not need fixing to a wall with sealant. But, of course, the mosaic tiles are the most decorative feature of the walls and floor. An interesting and elegant guest bathroom can be achieved if you allow a touch of irony; for example, a tap in the form of a pipe coming from the ceiling. The main ‘joke’ is understanding how it turns on – it is far from obvious.

Generally, when there is the correct architectural volume it does not additional decoration; minimalism looks far more effective in this interior. Anna Erman’s approach to the colour scheme is often purely practical: if a room will be regularly cleaned you can afford to use the lightest tones up to white, but if you want to avoid cleaning the room too frequently it is better to use darker colours. The crucial moment in creating a bathroom interior is choosing the sanitary ware. This is
determined, above all, by pricing policy. Once this is decided, you can choose a bathtub, sink and other items for style and functionality. But even in a bathroom with a window artificial lighting is necessary. Anna Ehrman uses the traditional functional approach: there should be general lighting and zonal lighting in certain areas – for example, by the mirrors, sink and bathtub. In Anna’s opinion, standard lamps look especially attractive in the bathroom, as they don’t give out a lot of light, but they decorate the interior. Soap, towels, toothbrushes and the other small accessories, without which a bathroom is incomplete, are also part of the interior. Anna Erman thinks in advance about their design and location – nothing should appear out of place. All this is not just a whim. In a modern home the bathroom should not only carry out its primary function; it should also provide an opportunity to relax and unwind from the mental fatigue of a hard day. Affluent people strive to turn their bathrooms into a home spa, and ladies prefer to arrange it as part of a boudoir. These ideas have long been in the air and today, finally, they are feasible.

Luxury for the bathroom from Credit Ceramica The radiator from the luxury Romanov collection manufactured by Hotech is finished in gold leaf. The design was created by Michael Casassa. The radiator not only looks beautiful, but it also has the advantage of the Hotech brand: high heat output with a small volume of water, which saves significantly on energy. The hydraulic system is made of copper. An electric version is also available, with the option of LED backlighting.

furnishing projects Octogonales tiles Octogonales, the name of the new floor tile collection from Spain’s Azulev, speaks for itself – ‘Octagonal’. Indeed, the basic elements of this collection are large (45 x 45 cm) octagons with rounded corners. They are alternated with small diamond-shaped inserts (6,7 x 6,7 cm). The basic elements are available in four versions, two with wood effect and matte finish, and two with marble effect and gloss finish. The tiles are especially effective with the diamond-shaped inserts that imitate titanium and bronze. The remarkable ‘Masque de Femme’, a crystal bas-relief on tap handle tops, is an exercise in elegance. Enamel with a picture of a palm branch adorns the handles on all four sides. The collection of luxury taps is offered by the well-known French manufacturer THG. No one will be indifferent to the appearance of the new taps by VitrA. The bathroom is given a nostalgic look by the Juno Classic collection of porcelain tap handles. The Efes and Serenada collections continue the theme. The first was created in the best traditions of old England: a basin with three slots for the handles and the tap snuggly in its place on the pedestal; a toilet with upright tank connected to the seat by metal pipe and fittings, underlining the style of the time. The Countryside tiles will create a traditional English interior.

The two-storey relaxation area with rotating floors and sliding partitions for zoning make it possible to fashion the space according to the required purpose. The 3D-Max project was created by the architect German Enin.

Endless enjoyment Engineers from the Japanese bathroom brand TOTO have looked at how to turn an ordinary bathroom into a private spa. The special systems used by TOTO in the production of their bathtubs and shower heads will enable you to relax and enjoy a light massage. Gyrostream is a shower unit in which water passes through a nozzle that rotates and pulses, covering the body more evenly with water. The swirling water massages the body, refreshing it and stimulating blood circulation. Hydrohands is a new hydromassage technology for the bathtub: water under natural pressure flows through specially calibrated nozzles, causing a spiraling motion. All TOTO ceramic products are treated with CeFiONtect, a durable glaze that protects them from mould, limescale and waste matter. The nano-technology used in the development of CeFiONtect helps to create an absolutely smooth surface, to which very little dirt can stick.
Jacuzzi The Jacuzzi City Spa is a new home wellness product, which merges design and advanced technology. Thanks to its two loungers and hydromassage jets, positioned at a 30° angle in an area of 2,4 m², it offers a highly professional hydromassage. Due to its compact size and low floor load, the City Spa can be installed both indoors and outside.
Wooden charm Etis is a ceramics collection from the Italian producer Atlas Concorde decorated with seven valuable tree species, each with its own history, unique aesthetics and charm, bringing the immortal beauty of wood into modern interiors and exteriors. The matt surface stands out with its almost intangible microstructure, slightly reminiscent of aged wood, whereas its structure reproduces the texture of sawn timber.
