Russia A Dynamic Market

Don't be afraid to give up the good to go for the great. John D. Rockefeller

#21 / MARCH - MAY 2016 Founder: ITE Group plc.

here is much debate about what distinguishes a great idea from a good one, but one point on which everyone agrees is that it's impossible to develop a successful idea in a vacuum – which is especially true when it comes to doing business in a dynamically developing market. Modern business executives are akin to army generals: they assign missions, accept risks, and most importantly, develop strategy and tactics. Both groups have to make tough choices in difficult situations, focus their resources to meet challenges, and make sacrifices to achieve their ultimate goal. The state of the market dictates the rules of the market and acts as a starting point for major players to devise their business strategy. When starting or growing a business, it is important to make it secure and sustainable. To do this, one has to study the market in depth and try to predict future trends. The simplest way to get a snapshot of the industry as a whole is to attend the MosBuild exhibition. It is considered a must-attend event by industry leaders, both as a forum for sharing information, and as a venue for making new contacts and seeking out new business opportunities. Year after year, we have shown that face-to-face meetings at the highest level are essential for success. As is tradition, the publication of MosBuild Magazine sets the stage for the opening of MosBuild, now in its 22nd year. This issue features some of the innovations that will be showcased at the upcoming exhibition, but to see the full range of exciting new products, come to MosBuild 2016 at Moscow's Expocentre, 5-8 April 2016. Moscow International Business Centre, also known as MoskvaCity, is one of the biggest urban planning projects implemented in Russia in recent decades. It is the site of a new financial district that also offers prime residential and leisure facilities. The total area of Moskva-City is close to 100 hectares, of which 60 hectares are earmarked for new development. Construction of all buildings in Moskva-City is due to be completed in 2018. Today, 11 out of the 23 planned buildings have been completed, with seven currently under construction and five in the planning stages. When the building work is complete, it is estimated that the district will regularly host approximately 300,000 people, both residents and visitors. The future focal point of Moskva-City is the Federation Tower, the soon-to-be tallest building in Europe, which was designed by Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger. The multi-purpose complex consists of two towers connected by a platform: the 95-storey East Tower at 374 metres and the 63-storey West Tower at 240 metres. Find out more at www.stroi.mos.ru

The Jewel in London's Crown Eric Parry Architects have unveiled their design proposal for a 73-storey office tower that will be located in the heart of London's financial district. The project is currently named “1 Undershaft” after the building's street address. The tower will be the second tallest building in London at 294.6 metres, just behind Piano's Shard, which stands at 306 metres. The project was commissioned by Aroland Holdings (Singapore), and the tower will contain 90,000 square metres of internal space, a new public square at its base and a viewing gallery at the top. The skyscraper's exterior will have a diamond pattern composed of bronze struts, and this motif will be repeated in the pair of escalators in the lobby. “Most skyscrapers are used Monday to Friday, but 1 Undershaft will be used seven days a week, with the public able to enjoy the new public square, viewing platform and restaurant every day. It will be the jewel in the crown of the City of London and something we hope Londoners will be very proud of,” said architect Eric Parry. 1 Undershaft, London, UK Design: Eric Parry Architects

SOUND WAVES The design was conceived as an elongated cube punctured by two conical atriums that allow light and air to filter into the building and give views of the river. The atriums resemble two giant eyes gazing out at the world: the building is home to the headquarters of Euronews, a leading international news channel that presents global news from a European perspective. The building's architecture is experimental and ambitious, comprising a bright facade made of glass and a perforated aluminium skin. The lattice facade has a striking effect on the interior, creating a play of light and shadow throughout the day. The conical atriums consist of faceted metal panels, an innovative approach to providing natural ventilation and natural light in the offices. The atrium balconies serve as spaces where Euronews employees can relax. The unconventional architecture and decor of the building are designed to meet the latest environmental and functional specifications, helping to enhance the life of the building and its inhabitants. EXPANDING CREATIVITY The redesigned San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is set to open in May 2016. The museum has undergone an expansion to meet the growing needs of the exhibition spaces and the museum's new social functions. The new building was developed by Snøhetta and integrates seamlessly with the existing museum structure, which was designed by Mario Botta in 1995. Its proximity to San Francisco Bay inspired the architects to create a facade resembling waves in the fog. Fibre-reinforced plastic panels have been fixed to the facade system and create ripples of horizontal stripes that move and undulate with the shifting light. The museum complex will act as an innovative learning and social centre in the city. In addition to galleries displaying modern art, architecture and design, the museum will have open-air terraces for sculpture, the Pritzker Centre for Photography, an education centre, library and archive (on the lower level), a conservation centre, restaurant and a theatre area with performance and events spaces.

METAL CURTAIN The Grand Theatre in Albi is an outstanding architectural symbol that ties together a network of public spaces and cultural facilities. The idea of preserving the site's old cinema building originated with architect Dominique Perrault, who repurposed the space as a comprehensive cultural centre boasting a theatre with two stages, and several cinema screens on the basement levels. Providing visual access to the public space, the building's facade is completely glazed on one side, like a large window on the city. The coloured glass casts the spacious foyer in a spectrum of warm, welcoming hues. The building's simple form is constructed from concrete and finished in brick, while the exterior is dressed in a copper-toned metal curtain that imbues the theatre with lightness and lustre. The building's entrances are marked by arches where the curtain-like mesh rises up slightly, allowing visitors to enter. Like a voile, the metal fabric protects the theatre from the wind, rain and direct sunlight. This translucent volume also partitions the terrace roofs, which feature a hanging garden and restaurant. COVERING PAST & PRESENT The major redevelopment of the Piazza Garibaldi in Naples designed by French studio DPA has been completed. The piazza is now a multi-purpose transport hub containing stations for the railway, metro, bus and tram systems, as well as cycling and pedestrian zones. The floating architectural structure allows natural light to filter down to the underground areas, while the steel framework of the canopies, perforated metal panels and variety of porous textiles harmoniously form singular loadbearing columns. More than 50 million people pass through the terminal every year. In addition to the transport infrastructure and commercial arcades, the piazza also has designated areas for walking and relaxing – a park and a flower market. In Naples, every step you take is a step into 3000 years of history, and the city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. “We have left our own mark on the city's history,” say the project leaders, who have breathed new life into the Piazza Garibaldi and blurred the lines between past and present. CHAINMAIL FOR WINDOWS The architectural idea behind the redesign of this 1930s building was the creation of a contemporary, sustainable home. Unlike the blocky ground floor, the upper floor is glazed with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer expansive views of the surrounding woods and the city. The windows have exterior metal mesh roller shutters that help protect the interior from solar overheating and provide filtered views of the landscape. Special radiating panels on the ceiling and floor serve to regulate the interior climate of the “glazed box, keeping it cool in summer and warm in winter. The heating and cooling systems utilise deep probe geothermal drilling, heat pumps and solar thermal panels on the roof. For overall energy saving, the new structure is composed of highly energy-efficient materials and insulation. The floor and walls are clad in walnut panels that create a warm ambience. The 2000 sq ft building has been given a new, energy-efficient lease of life. House S, Stuttgart, Germany Design: Behnisch Architekten

FLAT-PACK ARCHITECTURE Renzo Piano designed a unique cultural complex for the medieval Italian city of L'Aquila. The auditorium is formed of three interconnected cubes made entirely of wood that appear to have “haphazardly tumbled down, creating the illusion of instability. Though the wooden cubes present a marked contrast to the neighbouring 16th century castle, the material was actually chosen to optimise the building's acoustic function. Larch was selected as the ideal wood variety; it is also widely used in making musical instruments, most famously by Stradivarius. Each cube is clad in specially treated multicoloured larch tiles measuring 25 cm wide and 4 cm thick. The central cube is the auditorium itself, which can hold 238 people. The angle of the seating ensures the best possible listening and viewing conditions. The wood walls are covered in a series of acoustic panels to reflect sound inside the space. The piazza in front of the building is designed to allow the auditorium to extend outdoors in summer and to project live performances on a large screen on the facade. ON NATURE'S EDGE This building's location at the intersection of water and land has been utilised to transform it into a boathouse. The building is divided into above ground and above water sections, and the two facades are made from markedly different materials. The above water facade is made completely of wood, while the other is wrapped in expanded copper. This natural look makes the building seem like a natural part of the landscape. A system of facade-integrating folding elements has been developed which, unlike normal folding gates, open horizontally to form a passable bridge/pier, give ground-floor access to moored vessels, and create a platform over the lake on the upper level. Downstairs the building has a wellness area with hydromassage bathtub and a changing room. The thermally separated upper level includes a solarium, massage room and gym, as well as a small kitchen and lounge. All of the floors are connected by an open staircase that evokes the symbolic connection between the blue of the sky and the blue of the lake. EGGER DESIGN+ FLOORING:

new products, same eco-friendly ethos

At MosBuild, EGGER will present their designer wood flooring

About EGGER Founded in 1961, this family business currently employs 7600 people. Today the company has 17 factories across Europe that produce a wide range of wood materials (MFC, OSB and MDF) and timber. In the 2014-2015 financial year, the EGGER Group's turnover was 2.26 billion euros. EGGER has a global client base and regularly works with furniture manufacturers and specialised wood traders, as well as major supermarket chains and DIY stores. EGGER products have varied applications, including interior decoration of residential and public spaces: from kitchens and bathrooms to offices, hotels and shops. EGGER is a one-stop supplier of products for furniture manufacturing, interior decor, wood construction and wood flooring.

62

EGGER DESIGN+ flooring is a premium product suitable for use in commercial and residential facilities. EGGER is committed to innovation, so when it came to developing a new class of flooring, it focused on the varied needs of its customers: a modern flooring solution needs to look good, clean easily, and withstand heavy loads. Moreover, customers want price to correspond to quality. “Customer needs are changing, and they are becoming more and more individualised. We are rising to meet this challenge. EGGER has long been an expert both in laminate flooring and wood flooring. The laminate flooring market in Western Europe is shrinking just as demand for designer flooring continues to grow,” explains Michael Gerbl, Head of Marketing & PM EGGER Retail Products. EGGER DESIGN+ is ushering in a new era in designer flooring: it has successfully combined natural wood flooring with the properties of plastic-based designer floors. The top layer consists of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). This elastic, harmless to health and odourless material with low formaldehyde emissions is used in countless products, from smartphone cases to outlet pipes. The middle layer of this next-generation flooring is made of Ultra Wood Fibre Board (UWF) – high-density, double-sealed coreboard made from natural wood fibres. Flooring that remembers. EGGER has drawn on decades of experience to produce 20 contemporary wood decors and stone replicas. With the SelfRepair function, where the flooring molecules displaced by surface deformation “remember” and return to their initial position, EGGER has created a new, unique type of flooring.

MosBuild EXHIBITION | 5 - 8 APRIL 2016

ROUTE TO INNOVATION In the run-up to MosBuild 2016, MosBuild Magazine wanted to find out how companies are preparing for the exhibition and what new products we can expect to see in April. We interviewed Andrei Loginov, marketing director at Trade Lock, and Dmitry Klepikov, brand manager at Armadillo.

– Andrei, your company has been operating for 10 years now, what changes has Trade Lock experienced recently? – We have undergone global changes in the last year. In 2015 we launched the luxurious and exquisite Classic collection, and this year we will be launching our URBAN collection of contemporary handles. We developed new product and packaging designs for these collections and completely updated our marketing materials for the brand. But our creation of the collections began with revamping our logo. We didn't want to change it dramatically, as we wanted to preserve our brand's history and recognition. We added a graphical element that refers to the year the brand was established, and made the logo more streamlined and modern.

64

– When creating a new product, where do you begin? – It all begins with the idea. As we work to realise this idea, we are constantly thinking of the positive emotion we want the product to evoke. The idea is transformed into a design, which then is turned into a detailed blueprint and a 3D model that we print on our 3D printer. Then we can hold a prototype of our new product printed in plastic. We evaluate its appearance and the engineering department performs essential testing of its service life and safety. We make the necessary changes to the 3D model and it is digitally sent into production, where casting moulds are made for it. Sometimes we spend several months on the mould production and approval stages. When the moulds are finished we get the first samples of

by our company. The phrase shows that what you are holding in your hands is truly a high-quality product. Quality control begins at the design stage and continues through every stage of production. – Tell us about the new Classic and URBAN collections. – The Armadillo Classic Collection is a door handle collection. Tall classic doors are now coming into fashion. In line with this trend, we created door handles that are solid, ergonomic, and most importantly, beautiful. The collection includes five distinct models in eight colours. Several colours, such as SILVER 925, are new to the Russian market. The Armadillo Classic door handle in GOLD 24 resembles an exquisite piece of jewellery and adds a unique touch of opulence to an interior. – What other products do you expect will wow your customers? – Armadillo handles come with the innovative VELOUR nano coating which makes them incredibly pleasant to the touch. You will look forward to using these handles day after day. This is similar to what Andrei was saying about products evoking positive emotions.

www.armadillo.su

the product that have been through every stage of production and decoration. In parallel to this, we work on the packaging, manuals and advertising materials. – Dmitry, your company represents the Russian brand Armadillo, tell us about it. – Armadillo makes contemporary door fittings designed in Russia. – Given the competition in the market today, a different approach is required. How do you ensure the quality of Armadillo products? – Every product in the Classic and URBAN collections has “QUALITA’ DI SEMPRE” engraved on the inside. This is more than a pretty sentiment, it's an entire quality assurance system, devised and implemented

– But the construction of Armadillo handles is different from standard handles. – That's right. And this difference will evoke its own positive feelings. We developed an innovative fixing for the TURN&SET base, which was first applied in the Classic collection. And later in the URBAN collection. With this new system, our handles can be installed in under a minute. Customers can now swap the positions of their Classic and URBAN handles, or install a new handle on an existing base. The service life of TURN&SET has been extended even more and is now suitable for installation in hightraffic areas. – Your packaging is also unusual, is this also an example of your company's know-how? – Yes, we designed unique yellow packaging specially for Classic to enhance its status. We created contemporary blue packaging for the URBAN collection depicting the buildings of Moskva-City. The fittings are packed in foam using a new method that protects the products from damage. The packaging is unusually dense and has the Soft-touch effect of the URBAN collection. Each unit is wrapped in transparent film, which further protects against damage and guarantees the product's saleable condition.

– Tell us about the new URBAN collection. – When designing the URBAN collection, we drew inspiration from the world's metropolises and tried to convey the contemporary trends of the high-tech style. The slogan we chose for the collection was BIG CITY LIFE. Each handle in the collection has its own unique name with its own story. For instance, the SQUID handle mirrors the shape of this mysterious creature and gives you a sense of the beauty of nature even in the heart of a city. CUBE evokes the spirit of Cubism, which originated in France in the early 20th century and featured the use of geometric forms and local paints. Pablo Picasso was a pioneer of Cubism. – What are you working on now? – Right now we have a host of projects in development. I'll name just a few of them: Architect 3D-ACH UNIVERSAL concealed hinges, Classic pull handles, handles for URBAN sliding doors, and Classic and URBAN range door stops. In the future we plan to significantly expand the Classic and URBAN collections with innovative new models. www.armadillo.su We look forward to seeing you at MosBuild 2016, 5-8 April, in Pavilion 8, Hall 1 at our stand T169

NETHERLANDS |

The need to modernise one of Amsterdam's central districts led to the reconstruction of an old brick complex with panoramic windows and an inner courtyard. As a result, the De Borneohof building's exterior and interior received a stylish update. The redesign team carefully preserved the building's historic appearance and its facade is a natural continuation of the aesthetic established by the architect Weisman in the rest of the neighbourhood. The architectural expression of the quarter is underscored by the contemporary landscape framed by historic 19th century buildings. Apartments in De Borneohof are clustered around the inner courtyard, which is accessed by four entrances, two of which have been transformed into art spaces: the hallways and staircases are decorated with the old doors from the demolished homes. The retro feel of the door collage is also found in the design of the windows and staircases. The sensitive handling of the building's history and precise implementation of architectural innovations have turned De Borneohof into an urban oasis that functions as a residential and public space.

99c offices, Cape Town, South Africa Design: Inhouse Brand Architects

A new project from Inhouse Brand Architects is this striking 3000 m2 office design for branding agency 99c. The primary goal was to create a functional space to suit daily business needs that also reflected the creativity of the agency and its employees. The space is interspersed with breakout areas to stimulate communication and encourage collaboration. The upper levels are connected by a staircase leading to a mezzanine containing a conference room and a space where the whole team can gather. Simple and eco-friendly materials were used, such as pine, plywood and oriented strand board (OSB), which offset the concrete and steel framework. The space under the staircase conceals a small kitchen. Bold colours serve to distinguish different areas. The waiting room for visitors in located inside a red shipping container, a nod to the agency's quirky personality and a symbol of the global reach of its creative solutions.

Designer's home in Milan, Italy Design: Paola Navone

The home of designer Paola Navone in Milan closely resembles an open-plan studio. The living areas, which are located on the upper level below the pitched roof, have a complex configuration, exposed steel girders, rafters and corrugated ceiling panels. The predominance of unpainted metal gives the interiors an industrial feel, which combines wonderfully with Navone's bespoke collections of ceramics and textiles. Raffia light shades help soften the harsh effect of the metal. The floor in the entryway and along the perimeter of the space is laid with cobblestones, mimicking Milan's old streets. The colour combinations of grey and azure, green and ultramarine tiles in the dining area create a light, fresh ambience. Paola Navone is a true master when it comes to creating exciting combinations of materials, decors and colours. The mezzanine in the loft has large pitched windows instead of walls. There are no bold colour combos here, it is the “grey relaxation area. The building is a source of inspiration with an interior that lives and breathes, constantly changing with additions from Paola Navone's own collections.

Els Arcs, Andorra Design: KF ARQUITECTES, Spain

Photo: Adrià Goula

SPAIN |

Els Arcs (“The Arches”) is a multi-purpose building in Comú de la Massana, situated at an altitude of 1250 m. KF ARQUITECTES were the winners of the ideas competition for the project and were commissioned to design the building. The plot is trapezoidal in shape and adjacent to two streets with a difference in height of 12 m. The aim of the design was to create a homogeneous urban structure that served various functions. The building houses a children's play area, a youth club, a business incubator, a call centre for Andorra Telecom, a multimedia centre and a local health centre. All of these functions have influenced the architecture and materials used, which increase and minimise “loudness” and adjust the visual dimensions of the interiors. The geometry of the concrete roof is reflected in the structural ribs that recall the slopes of the mountains, improve the acoustics and conceal the lighting and other utilities. The large windows allow natural light to fill the interior, optimising the building's energy efficiency and providing a spectacular view of the mountains. The use of stone and slate on the pitched roofs is a nod to Pyrenees architectural traditions.

LINK TO THE PAST

Venice Biennale Café, Italy Design: Tobias Rehberger

Photos: Wolfgang Guenzel

ITALY |

Tobias Rehberger was awarded the Golden Lion for best artist at the International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia for his café design. The designer worked closely with furniture brand Artek in developing his concept. All of the furniture, partitions and screens were created by Artek to Rehberger's specifications and then finished in unique patterns and colours. The interiors are a complex scheme of geometric shapes and contrasting colours that create a visually disorienting space. It is hard to define the start and end of the tables, chairs, walls, floor or ceiling. The design concept is based on a specific example from the early 20th century: razzle dazzle or dazzle painting was a method used to camouflage ships during the First World War. The jury commended the designer for this striking link to the past “where past modes of exhibition are reinvented and the work of art turns into a cafeteria. In this shift social communication becomes aesthetic practice.”

British Royal Residences Collection design: Tricia Guild, Designers Guild

The interiors of royal palaces and castles continue to live and change today as they are updated and modernised with continuing respect for long held traditions. Since 2007, Designers Guild has produced fabrics and wallpapers as part of The Royal Collection brand in collaboration with the Royal Household. Art director Tricia Guild and her team were given exclusive access to the interiors of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, where the designers drew inspiration for creating these new designs. The palace's highly varied decor served as the heart of the collection: an extensive array of portraits of members of the Royal Family, tapestries, furniture, exquisite room decoration and other works of art that reflect the family's long history. Each design is imbued with a piece of history, such as the motif in the Queen Mary's Psalter pattern, which was inspired by the cover of a book owned by Queen Mary, or the Tudor Rose fabric, which mimics the pattern on the sleeve of a gown worn by Elizabeth I. The collection is wholly unique and, despite its classic sources, is a spectacular example of contemporary design trends that brings royal chic into any interior. In Russia, The Royal Collection is available in MANDERS stores.

ACOUSTIC WALLS

Malmö Live Concert Hall, Sweden Design: Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects

The new cultural centre in Malmö is a veritable city within a city, one that contains concert halls, a conference centre and a hotel complex. The expansive Malmö Live building reflects contemporary Scandinavian architectural tendencies, which focus on clear, functional organisation and an accessible, open environment. The cultural centre provides an architectural expression of the city's spirit of diversity and seclusion, while the materials and colours are drawn from the immediate surroundings. The interior has also been realised on an urban scale, with a colour scheme and materials that further the “city within a city” concept. The simple interior consists of rough, black concrete, stone, wood and brass. Working in collaboration with Akustikon, the designers achieved impeccable, world-class sound quality in the concert spaces. A composition of cube elements was created for this purpose, where the angles and dimensions of each surface are calculated to deliver perfect acoustics. The built-in wall lights can be changed to suit whatever event is taking place in the concert halls.

Apartment in Moscow, Russia Design: Goodnova-Godiniaux and designer Yulia Orlova

This living space fit for a globetrotter was created by French architects from Goodnova-Godiniaux in collaboration with Russian designers. The team took a 16x9 metre concrete rectangle lit by large windows at each end and turned it into a living travel diary, with recollections from journeys across the world. Each area or room has its own unique decor. Inspiration was taken from various countries around the globe. A Spanish rug is recreated in tile on the kitchen floor, while the ceiling features Chinese copper lights by Tom Dixon. The shower is finished in a Scottish tartan mosaic and the bathroom wall tiles depict hot air balloons from Italian designer Piero Fornasetti. This eclectic decor is a constant reminder of exciting voyages and adventures. At the end of your travels, you need a comfortable place to relax and unwind, and here the shower and bathroom modules have been designed with this in mind. No detail has been overlooked: like a suitcase, the apartment is packed with original ideas that take you on a journey through decorative design.

GENTLEMAN'S SET

Apartment in Moskva-City, Russia Design: Designer Veronica Sudnikova

In a contemporary home the bathroom should serve more than just essential functions, it should also be a space for relaxing after a hard day at the office. Best of all is a bathroom that acts as a unique spa salon with full pampering functionality. The familiar set of sanitary ware can be multi-purpose: bathtub with hydro massage, shower with light therapy, mixers with temperature stabilisers. In this bathroom designed by Veronica Sudnikova, everything has been carefully considered, right down to the placement of the lighting. The ergonomic lighting solution employed in the space was realised using Porcelanosa tiles, and alongside the Antonio Lupi washbasin is a host of “masculine accessories from Zara Home. The 235 m2 apartment is located in one of the Moskva-City towers and has 2.9 m high ceilings. It has now been fitted out with two bathrooms and a guest toilet. Veronica Sudnikova specialises in creating luxury interiors with designs guided by her drive to craft aesthetic and comfortable environments that are 100% unique.

DIY MARKET TRENDS IN RUSSIA IN 2015

In 2015, the housebuilding sector saw a significant reduction in investment activity, while the levels of new housing commissioned remained stable, which was attributed to the completion of construction projects begun in 2014. The principle trend in the housing market in 2015 was the surge in decorated apartments, explained by developers' response to the limited financial means of house hunters, more of whom are relying on mortgages to fund their purchases and who are consequently giving preference to turnkey apartments that require minimal to no repairs or cosmetic alterations.

120

General secretary of the European Federation of DIY Manufacturers Ralf Rahmede

The fall in building levels in Russia in 2015 had a negative effect on the building and finishing materials market: despite price growth as a result of the devaluation of the ruble and the high levels of imports, retail sales in the DIY & Household segment fell by approximately 5% in monetary terms. Despite the continued devaluation of the ruble, which will inevitably lead to price rises in a host of goods categories, in 2016 INFOLine expects the market to continue on this downward trend. Negative external factors, the most significant of which are reduced consumer spending and falling demand in the B2B segment, have placed even more pressure on DIY retailers over the last year. With lower sales and traffic, retailers continue to seek out solutions to optimise

their businesses in logistics, product management and by expanding their portfolio of in-house brands. DIY chains have also been developing the synergistic effect of offline and online sales. INFOLine predicts that, as DIY chains grow their online sales, this will be accompanied by a consolidation of the existing players, as well as the establishment of new service standards: reducing delivery charges and times, expanding product ranges and introducing loyalty programmes. General secretary of the European Federation of DIY Manufacturers Ralf Rahmede spoke about online sales in building and finishing materials as one of the major trends in the DIY market during his speech at the forum on Issues and Development Prospects of the Building and Decorating Materials

Market and DIY Trade in 2015. Mr Rahmede noted that today it is crucial for traditional retailers to integrate their offline and online sales to allow customers to move freely between sales channels. Significant changes are taking place in today's consumer market as the population becomes stratified by income level. In his report to the DIY Forum, the general director of INFOLine remarked that 35% of Russia's population live in relative comfort, but that the number of people living on low incomes will only increase in the coming years. Scarcely over 10% of Russians control virtually all of the funds held by the country's banks, and are therefore potential property buyers. As such, with regard to the current difficulties in the DIY market, retailers must be aware that even welloff customers will be more price-conscious when it comes to making purchases for home repairs. The major players in Russia's DIY market remain as before, with international chains Leroy Merlin, OBI and Castorama leading

122

the pack. Going against the grain, Leroy Merlin has ramped up its investment in Russia, putting ever more pressure on the domestic chains unable to compete with it on prices. Among home-grown retailers, only STD Petrovich presents any real threat to the big three, and is the undisputed leader of the B2B market and a highly effective multi-channel retailer, demonstrating incredible results in terms of online sales growth and online revenue share. The 10 chains in the DIY Retail Russia TOP ranking account for more than 30% of the market, a share which will exceed 40% in the next 2-3 years. The detailed results of 2015 will be discussed by experts and representatives of DIY market leaders on 5 April 2016 at the MosBuild forum on Issues and Development Prospects of the Building and Decorating Materials Market and DIY Trade. INFOLine will present the latest market figures based on recent research and announce their DIY Retail Russia TOP ranking for 2015 compiled in collaboration with MosBuild.

A NEW KIND OF SCHOOL

Danish architectural studio CEBRA has been commissioned to design and implement the Smart School project, which will have 1040 students and 400 staff when completed. The complex is a network of buildings grouped around a central courtyard and connected by a single roof that includes covered verandas and walkways. The height and construction of the buildings have been influenced

124

by the landscape features around the site. Openings and glass inserts in the walls and roof maximise the natural light inside the buildings. The complex spreads across 20 hectares, and 31,000 m2 of the floor space will be dedicated to learning. The Smart School will teach children between the ages of three and 18, and will also have cultural and sports centres and a social support centre. All of the

spaces are united by the overall concept, smoothly flowing from one to the other and symbolising gradual development and cooperation. CEBRA has been guided by the expectations and needs of the school’s future students, resulting in a host of common areas and spaces for leisure and socialising: the spacious hallways, broad steps, and cafÊs represent safe, comfortable spaces where

126

students can gather together. The learning spaces are a far cry from standard classrooms, and there are also multi-purpose rooms for practical work. 15% of the school's places will be allocated to children who are orphans or who have a disability, which is why the school will be equipped with the necessary ramps and lifts to allow all students to move freely around the school. The Smart School will

” also provide the opportunity for orphaned children's foster families to live at the school. “When designing the Smart School in Irkutsk we wanted to create open, multifunctional and transformable rooms. We drew upon international experience and research in this field to create innovative educational buildings,” said Mark Sartan, the project lead.

Students at the Smart School will have access to cutting-edge learning technologies, including Smart Boards

The concept is a completely new approach to creating educational spaces. The CEBRA team are breaking up the typical classrooms and corridors, allowing students' irrepressible energy to fully inhabit a space that was made just for them.

MASTER CLASS | Sustainable Multi-use Complex, Cairo, Egypt Design: Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut

Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut has created a futuristic design for a sustainable multi-use complex in Cairo, Egypt. The future 450,000 m2 eco giant has been named The Gate Residence. The design is grounded in an innovative approach to green construction that transforms the structure into a vertical garden with a hyper-connected ecosystem. The extensive space on the roof of The Gate Residence has been converted into a public park containing children's play areas, leisure and sports facilities, gardens, infinity pools and retail space, all protected from the sun by a lattice-like covering. The complex also contains three levels of office space,

and above them, nine levels of residential space: one thousand premium apartments configured in a series of U shapes form the bulk of The Gate Residence. The underground section of the complex includes four parking levels and a supermarket. The structure employs two types of facade, the main one made from glass and white polished stone. The building's exterior finish resembles the gills of a fish and provides some necessary shade. Balconies have become hanging gardens, while the foliage on the facade has been integrated into a single system, forming green cascades. The Gate Residence project relies on the natural climatic

129

MosBuild EXHIBITION | BUSINESS PROGRAMME

resources of the building's environment: the sun and wind. These sources of renewable energy are efficiently harnessed by wind turbines, solar panels, geothermal pumps and other devices for generating eco heating and electricity. The complex is fitted out with a host of state-ofthe-art energy-saving technologies: the green areas have built-in windcatchers, while the roof and sides of the complex are covered in a solar photovoltaic canopy that generates electricity while protecting the building from the sun. Solar heating tubes are also positioned on the roof above each unit of the complex – they provide The Gate Residence with all

130

the hot water it needs via glass and metal pipes. And the roof gardens covering the entire complex promote thermal stability. The living walls are formed by nine megatrees that have an integrated system for irrigation and air flow. All of the structures use a geothermal system to maintain an optimal temperature. The geothermal pumps transport heat energy in the soil – two to three metres below the complex's foundations – to the building, providing a sustainable method of heating and cooling the interior space. The complex is equipped with multi-sensors that detect the number of people in a room. The devices

are motion sensitive, and this enables them to accurately regulate temperature and lighting. It's clear the the team behind this design hope to strike the perfect balance between comfort and conscience. All of the systems and equipment are controlled remotely via a digital interface. Vincent Callebaut has given us a model for a fundamentally new kind of urban architecture, where buildings embody the principles of a passive house and sustainability to reduce energy consumption by 50%. The Gate Residence demonstrates the strides being made in green architecture and is an impressive response to today's global environmental concerns.
