Week Three

Reading: Kolerevic B. 2003. Architecture in the Digital Age

Kolerevic described three fundamental type of fabrication techniques in the reading. Outline the three techniques and discuss the potential of Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with parametric modelling. (150 words max)

Subtractive Additive Formative

Week Three Surface Creation

Surface Test 1

Final Surface Big View

Surface Test 3

Surface Test 2

Final Surface

For the primary surfaces, I tested several times based on two ideas. One is the idea of creating effects of open and close by changing the distances between two surfaces. The contrast between open and closed space can create kind of balance. Therefore, people can feel the balance of the space when come into the pavilion. The other idea that I was testing is finding appropriate intersections between two surfaces.

Week Four

Panels & Waffle

For these panels, I did both 2d and 3d panels on two surfaces. There are totally 3 types of 2d panels and 3 for 3d panels.

For this waffle, there are 28 x contours and 12 z contours.

For 2d panels, I put them on the part that has high gradient and they can show the slope better than 3ds in my opinion. And for higher gradient, there are segments on panels as well. For 3d panels, I used “Construct Point“ command in Grasshoper, and create a group of point on the xz plane. Therefore the ends of each 3d panels are on one plane. These 3d panels create a stable structure and some interesting spaces.

I decreased the distance between each waffle structure, therefore, the number increased and the whole structure became more stable and tight.

Week Four Laser Cutting

600.00

600.00

For the process of creating laser cut files, I learnt several key things that need to be concerned.

900.00

And for a lower price, explode all the texts is pretty important. Because it will spend a quite long time to laser cut all texts.

900.00

In order to get a proper laser cut product, changing layers is necessay. I had to identify the two layers for cut and etch.

Week Five Boolean Test 1

Boolean Test 2

Boolean Test 3

Boolean Final

Before doing the 3D model, I was quite clear about the boolean forms that I want to use. Therefore, I just focused on testing ways of cutting it. Through test 1 to the final test, I found showing the intersections of inside and outside the surface is quite important in my design. In the final boolean test, the geomatries and curves are clearly shown, which perfectly expresses my design intension.

Week Five Isometric

For this task, I aimed to find interesting intersections between two types of solid and the boundary surface. In the final work on the left, I chose octahedron and dodecahedron. The intersections of these two solids create multilaterial and multi-directional interior spaces. By changing their size in Grasshoper, the intersections on the boundary surface create diverse nice geometries. These multiple shapes in different sizes and the interior curves are significant for the sunlight system as well. Different hollows create different shadows and sunshine inside. When consider each small volume as a room, it is also very spatial, dynamic and balanced, which is I want to achieve in this task.

Week Six

Task 01

Task 01 Matrix In the first row it shows the process of how the final surface came up. I was testing different types of intersection between surfaces and the effect of open and close space. To the second row, it shows how I made 3d panels. I used “construct point” command in Grasshopper and constructed points on “unit x&z“.

8

Week Six Task 02

Task 02 Matrix In the first row, it is about the point attractor. I arranged the attract point on different directions. In the second row, it shows the central points of my solid forms. For the last row, I tested two types of solid: octahedron and dodecahedron by changing their sizes.
