Special thanks to the clients who were able to attend our exclusive launch party and to Crossroads Kitchen for hosting us and Mizel Estate Wines!
We are thrilled to share our holiday issue with our cover story on the famed photographer Brian Bowen Smith. We had the privilege of attending the VIP opening of his exhibit at Studio CT at the Whizin Center where we got to enjoy Brian’s amazing Joyride exhibit. You’ll find some of his iconic photos in this story, but I also urge you to visit Studio CT during December to see all of Brian’s masterful photos in person.
We’re also excited to have an extended holiday shopping season this year, officially starting on Black Friday and continuing right through the New Year. We think you’ll agree that you will find the perfect gifts when you shop local and support the wonderful boutiques in the area that we are featuring. Shopping at real brick-and-mortar stores is especially fun this time of year, but most of the places we’ve highlighted also have great items and discount promo codes exclusive to 91302 Magazine readers when you shop these fabulous stores online.

From the Pharmacist
I feel sick; how can I determine what infection I have and how best to treat it?
Many infections, both bacterial and viral, circulate widely this time of year, and the symptoms often overlap, making it hard to distinguish what you may have. Common illnesses like covid, flu, RSV, and the common cold all share symptoms such as coughing, a sore throat, congestion, and a runny nose. Fever, however, is more commonly seen with flu and covid. Since the symptoms are so similar, the only way to accurately identify the illness you have is through testing. Fortunately, this year, an over-the-counter test is available that checks for both covid and flu with a single swab, offering added convenience.
If you do test positive, prescription treatments are available for both covid and flu, but they need to be started as soon as possible after symptoms appear for maximum effectiveness. If you test negative, it’s still a good idea to consult your pharmacist for over-the-counter medications that target your specific symptoms. Your pharmacist can also recommend vitamins or supplements to boost your immune system and help you recover more quickly.
Additionally, staying hydrated, getting plenty of rest, and maintaining good nutrition will aid in your recovery. It’s also not too late to get your flu and covid vaccines, which can help prevent these illnesses or at least lessen the severity if you do catch them.

Will 2025 Bring New Estate Tax Burdens?
What every Southern California family should know
Imagine this: You’ve worked hard to build a life you’re proud of, and when the time comes, you want the fruits of your labor to go to the people and causes closest to your heart— not unnecessarily to Uncle Sam. Currently, the estate tax— sometimes called the “death tax”—only affects the largest estates, with taxes kicking in only if your estate exceeds $13.61 million for singles and $27.22 million for couples. But that may soon change.
If Congress doesn’t act by 2025, these thresholds are set to shrink dramatically to about $7 million per person, meaning significantly more families—particularly in Southern California— may need to plan for estate taxes as high as 40% on wealth that they intend to pass down. While the prospect of a big tax change can be unsettling, the good news is that by planning now, you can keep more of what you’ve built for the ones you love.
What’s on the horizon: Possible tax scenarios
Lawmakers are still debating the future of the estate tax, and there are a few options they might consider:
Maintaining the current exemptions Some may push to extend the current high exemptions, but this outcome is far from guaranteed.
Reverting to lower thresholds The most likely outcome could be a return to pre-2017 levels, with a lower $7 million exemption..
Introducing progressive rates Some proposals suggest tiered rates that increase for ultra-high-value estates.
Lisa Golshani, Attorney at Law
How early planning can protect your wealth
A lower estate tax exemption could impact families in unexpected ways, but you don’t have to feel caught off guard. The key is proactive planning. Tools like trusts, lifetime gifts, and charitable giving can all be leveraged to minimize or even eliminate your estate tax liability. Staying informed is half the battle, and by starting early, you can ensure that more of your legacy stays right where you want it—benefiting your family and community.
Securing your legacy, one step at a time
We may not control tax laws, but we can absolutely control how we prepare. Taking a proactive approach with an estate attorney can give you the peace of mind that your wealth will serve the ones you love, just as you intended. l

Seth credits his business success to a blend of God’s blessings, staying committed to core moral values, discipline, hard work, and surrounding himself with wonderful people. Seth and Jolyn say their charitable involvement is “simply a response to God’s blessings and an opportunity to live a life of gratitude.” l

CELEBRATED
By Nancy Fath
Channing
Brian Bowen Smith, a celebrated American photographer, is deeply rooted in the fabric of his community, much like his evocative portraiture, which reflects the intimate and raw emotional connections he forms with his subjects. Smith has a style uniquely his own, merging glamour with authenticity and vulnerability. Whether capturing the essence of celebrities or the everyday beauty of local residents, his work speaks to the human experience in a way that resonates deeply with those who encounter it.
The partnership between Brian Bowen Smith and Studio CT began unexpectedly one Sunday evening at Basta, a beloved local restaurant. Howard Finn, the gallery director and consultant for Studio CT, was savoring a quiet dinner when he found himself in a playful debate with Smith over an indulgent chocolate lava cake. What began as light-hearted banter quickly blossomed into a creative spark. They laughed and shared stories over dessert, and by the end of the night, the seeds of an idea had been planted: a collaboration between Brian Bowen Smith and Studio CT to pay homage to the local community they both cherished.
Bringing Joyride to life
Brian Bowen Smith's body of work titled Joyride, which showcases at Studio CT through December, is more than just a series of photographs—it is a love letter to the local community. Joyride features a mix of well-known and everyday faces from the area, including Kerry on horseback and Kathryn Bell from Basta, all captured in local environments.
Stars and Stripes
side of his work. At Studio CT, Brian Bowen Smith could fully explore his passion for the people and places close to his heart.
Through this project, Brian Bowen Smith not only highlights the beauty of Old Agoura but also helps put the local community on the map in a new way. His photographs are deeply personal, reflecting relationships he built over the years with people in the area.
"All of the shoots were about relationships," Smith explains. "It’s about the connections we make every day, the people we see, and the places we go."
This spirit of connection found a new home with Studio CT, cofounded by Nancy and Shanesa Fath. Studio CT, a lifestyle gallery representing iconic photographers and artists, is a space where art, culture, and interior design intertwine. The studio's ethos emphasizes collaboration and local engagement, making it the perfect place for an artist like Smith to showcase a rarely seen
"Brian is an extraordinary individual with a tremendous heart for his community," remarks Shanesa. "His work truly captures the spirit of an American renaissance."
As they discussed the potential of working together, it became clear that Smith's values aligned perfectly with those of Studio CT. Both parties are dedicated to fostering a sense of connection through art, celebrating the everyday lives of people in their community, and preserving the rich culture of their local area.
As a photographer deeply in tune with his surroundings, Smith has long been a supporter of localism. His work with Studio CT further solidified this. "Photography gives me the opportunity to tell stories,” reflects Smith. "And in this case, it’s the story of our community—the people who live here, work here, and make this place what it is."
Through his lens, Smith was able to shine a spotlight on the unique character of Old Agoura, with its small-town feel, often overshadowed by its more glamorous neighbors. The photographs he created for Joyride reflect the spirit of localism in its truest form—capturing the everyday lives of the people who make the community special.
A Collective at Studio CT
Nancy and Shanesa Fath were thrilled to welcome Smith into their creative fold. The inclusion of an artist like him signaled a new chapter for Studio CT, making it not just a place to view art and design but a hub for community engagement, where local residents could experience the transformative power of photography, design, and storytelling.
"We are so passionate about bringing arts and culture to our community," explains Nancy. "Studio CT gives creatives an outlet to tell their stories." Through its collaboration with Brian Bowen Smith, Studio CT offered a space where art could inspire conversation and connection.
Another side of Brian Bowen Smith
Brian Bowen Smith had the opportunity to explore a side of himself that his fast-paced career rarely allowed. While he is known for photographing the biggest names in Hollywood, the work he did for Joyride is more personal, more intimate.
"No one has seen this side of me," admits Smith. "This is work I’ve been thinking about for years, but I only shot it a few weeks before the show. It’s been planned in my head for so long, and it just needed the right moment to come to life."
Each piece has a story behind it. From a portrait of ballerinas to images of motorcycles, which he describes as his "meditation, his surfing, his way to escape without a phone," every photograph in the exhibition tells a part of Smith's own journey.
What makes Joyride even more meaningful is the presence of his family. Shea, always by Smith’s side, has been an unwavering source of strength and inspiration throughout his journey. Their son, Jona, whom Smith has been photographing since the moment of his birth, is featured in a personal collection of images woven into the exhibition’s narrative. Kaleena Winkler, who graced the first edition cover of 91302 Magazine, is also present, symbolizing Smith's enduring connection not only to his family but also to the community.
It’s the story of our community— the people who live here, work here, and make this place what it is.

Poppa
Through his work on Joyride, Smith found a way to tell his own story, one that is intertwined with the lives of those around him. And in Studio CT, he found a home where his art can live and thrive. As the exhibition at Studio CT opened, it became clear that this was not just another gallery showing. It was a celebration of community, relationships, and the stories that bind us all together. "This exhibition has something for everyone," Smith notes. "It’s not just about photography—it’s about the gift of community.” Visit Studio CT to experience the Joyride exhibit featuring photographs by Brian Bowen Smith at The Whizin Market Square: 28873 Agoura Rd., Agoura Hills. l

SPIRIT OF THE SEASON
By Lawrence Mitchell
Ignore those who claim we have no seasons. Wondrous water falls from our skies. Native sage and yucca curl up and hibernate. Deciduous trees turn brilliant hues and drop their leaves. This is SoCal winter. Time to stoke our fireplaces and bake! Put aside summer’s rosés and margaritas. Here is our guide to stocking your bar with a thoughtful selection of spirits, mixers, and wines that will evoke warmth and comfort for the season’s inevitable guests.
Hearty winter meals call for bold red wines. Turn your wine fridges up from 42º to 46º and serve rich cabernets, dense malbecs, and spicy zinfandels at the perfect temperature. Focus on the classics. Bourbon and rye whiskeys’ warm, sweet, and smoky notes pair well with fresh-squeezed citrus or cinnamon-spiced liqueur. Create your own unique oldfashioneds and whiskey sours. Consider dark-aged rum mixed with molasses or maple syrup and mulled with clove, orange zest, and allspice for a soothing hot-buttered rum. Don’t be afraid to break out sweet vermouth for Manhattans. Stretch a little to include amaro or even chartreuse to add an herbal kick to traditional Negronis or Boulevardiers.
Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, and pumpkin spice to freshpressed apple cider and slowly warm in a pot on the stove. This will fill your home with an intoxicating aroma and serve as an all-purpose mixer for any brandy. Finally, consider adding a few mixers like ginger beer and fresh citrus to create refreshing mules paired with your favorite spirits.
With a well-stocked winter bar, you can experiment with seasonal flavors, delighting friends and family with warm, inviting drinks that celebrate the spirit of the season. l

October 7th: An Evening of Solidarity and Remembrance
Calabasas Mayor Alicia Weintraub and City Council Member David Shapiro hosted an Evening of Solidarity and Remembrance, marking the one-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack in Israel and the start of the Gaza war. Speakers included local rabbis, clergymen, educators, state officials, and mayors and city council members from neighboring communities. Glenn Heilbronn, 1st Sergeant, Battalion 9217, Givati Reserves IDF, discussed rejoining his unit and participating in the frontline offensive in northern Gaza. Rick J. Caruso, founder and executive chairman of Caruso®, expressed support for Israel and called for the release of hostages and an end to the conflict in the Middle East.
Peter Kraut The New Mayor of Calabasas
No one was surprised when Peter Kraut was elected to the Calabasas City Council in November of 2020. His esteemed reputation began in 2007 when he served on the Calabasas General Plan Advisory Committee. Volunteering for 18 months, he helped write the 2030 General Plan, the basis for the development code that the City of Calabasas uses today. He also served as a Calabasas planning commissioner from 2016 to 2020 and as the vice-chairperson for the latter two years. In addition, Peter brought his 23 years of business experience to City Hall, where he promised to curb wasteful spending and strengthen fiscal oversight.
Since his election to the City Council, Peter has been faithfully present and prepared for each council meeting. In addition to the two televised meetings each month, Peter meets weekly with the staff and city manager and participates in various committees and task forces on economic development, open space/ annexation, homelessness, and budgets. He also attends and participates in various organizations to accomplish Calabasas' goals within the community, the surrounding cities, Los Angeles County, and the State of California.
Peter studied civil engineering and earned a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering Technology from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts. He founded South Coast Engineering Group in 2001 and opened his first office in Calabasas, where he has employed dozens of engineers, designers, and draftspersons for the past 23 years.
Peter and his wife, Lesli, have lived in Calabasas for 20 years. Their children, Andrew and Rachel, attended local public schools, and both parents believed that building a
partnership with LVUSD was essential to the wellbeing of Calabasas. When elected, all five school board members endorsed Peter. An avid outdoors man, Peter has a proven voting record of preserving open spaces and protecting the environment and is committed to restoring and improving all our parks and trails.
Peter has earned a vast number of awards for his community service in the areas of engineering, water conservation, green building code adaptation, and Habitat for Humanity projects. His greatest interest and deepest involvement today is with Engineers Without Borders, where he serves at a national level, providing resources for mentors and reviewing projects before they are built. Locally, Peter is a mentor for the UC Santa Barabra chapter focused on a rainwater harvesting project in Rwanda. Peter has also been an assistant scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of America Troop 127 for the past 10 years and is an active member of Congregation Or Ami.
As the new mayor of Calabasas, Peter looks forward to working on and completing several key projects, including bringing back the city’s Strategic Priorities, so that the city staff can focus on one cohesive set of goals agreed to by the council. He also looks forward to the completion of the Annexation of Craftsman's Corner, creating a new ordinance to better protect our open spaces, rebuilding our aging infrastructure, particularly at the Tennis and Swim Center, and finding new sources of funding, such as grants and state budget allocations.
Peter will take his oath of office as the new mayor of Calabasas at the December 11th City Council meeting.l

Imagine being born into a family with roots generations deep in the skincare industry. Imagine that your playground as a child is a legendary apothecary giving access to the most luxurious ingredients and the freedom to create anything you desire. In this world, with no budget limitations and supported by the most brilliant scientific minds in beauty who have known and collaborated with your global brand for generations, you are able to formulate groundbreaking products tailored to your exact specifications, bringing your ultimate skincare dreams to life.
This isn’t a fairytale; it’s the real-life story of Jami Morse Heidegger. Her family history with the Kiehl’s Since 1851 brand spans three generations. Her grandfather purchased the business from pharmacist John Kiehl, and her father grew up in a full-service pharmacy stocked with teas, herbs, tinctures, and honeys. For decades, Jami and her family developed hundreds of new products for Kiehl’s.
around the corner from my school when I was young. It’s how I grew up. It’s a part of my DNA. We used to laugh that dinner was a meeting of the board.”
Jami and her husband, Klaus Heidegger, spent years cultivating Kiehl’s into a beloved international brand before selling it to L’Oréal. During the extended noncompete period, Jami focused on her very active family, including three children, two who were competitive equestrians and water sports lovers, not to mention a husband who was a former World Cup champion on the Austrian ski team. The family’s interests took place in locations with highly reflective sun, including the beach, desert, and mountains, posing significant dangers from exposure, such as skin damage, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer.
Transforming a family legacy into luxury skincare with Retrouvé
“My father wrote a booklet about different herbs, what their properties were, and what was good for overall skincare, whether ingested or applied topically,” says Jami. “That is what I learned about from the time I came in. We were a very small family, and that was the type of conversation we had at the dinner table. We talked about ingredients, we talked about Kiehl’s, and my father was a big believer in having me taste the ingredients because he worked with so many natural ingredients. Understanding how formulations are made, watching the manufacturing, these are things that I did every day. These were my extracurricular activities because Kiehl’s was located
Seeking an overall holistic skin wellness regime, Jami reached out to trusted chemists to develop what was best based on expertise and not on cost. Every formulation was initially crafted for her own personal use, not to be sold. “I created Retrouvè based on my knowledge, learnings, and research,” says Jami, “and also what I wanted for myself and my own skin as a woman to help me age as gracefully as possible.”
Retrouvé launched with the mission to develop advanced boosted formulations designed as a luxurious, longterm, unisex, skin health system that deeply nourishes, hydrates, and repairs. The award-winning products are made in the United States and elevate skincare, helping to deliver stronger, healthier, and more radiant skin for

all ages. The line provides science-backed solutions with the highest efficacy and clinical levels of ingredients preserved within their patented functional packaging. The company innovated the use of a triple airless protection system to ensure maximum potency and stability of the formulations.
With Retrouvé, Jami and Klaus are changing the landscape of skincare by sourcing directly from their sustainable family ranch in Malibu, allowing an unparalleled level of control over the quality of their ingredients. Klaus’s childhood on a small farm informed their development of a self-sustaining permaculture ecosystem, which has improved their soil and water systems so they can generate small batches for several products. They harvest the extract from the avocados they grow for use in their Luminous Cleansing Elixir and Dermal Defense Hand Cream. Klaus has planted orchards to support future ingredients, such as goji berries, apples, spinach, plums, lavender and rosemary.
The family business continues with Jami and Klaus’s daughter, Hannah. What was once a male dominated industry has evolved into a multi-generational, female-led collaboration between mother and daughter that shapes the brand’s growth with formulations to help people look and feel their best at any age. The family's philanthropic roots trace back to Jami’s father and grandfather, who were dedicated to community service and inspired initiatives such as having Kiehl’s products that donated 100% of proceeds to causes such as amfAR and the Magic Johnson Foundation. Today, the family supports sustainability with agroforestry and reforestation projects through One Tree Planted, and for years, Jami and Klaus served on the board of Waterkeeper Alliance, an international organization dedicated to protecting water quality worldwide.

Restore Your Smile Solutions for worn teeth
By Bernie Villadiego, DDS
How worn teeth affect your face, jaw health, and long-term wellness— and what you can do about it.
Worn teeth, or dental attrition, and erosion, or abrasion, are common issues with substantial effects on facial aesthetics and health. Teeth wear due to factors like age; diet; grinding (sleep bruxism); acid exposure; and certain habits, and this can significantly impact the face’s appearance as well as the jaw joints and muscles. Understanding the effects of worn teeth and the importance of proper bite alignment can help maintain long-term health and aesthetics.
Impact on facial appearance
Teeth play a critical role in maintaining the structure of the lower face. When teeth wear down, they become shorter, which reduces the vertical height of the face (also known as the bite). This can lead to a sunken or aged appearance as the space between the nose and chin decreases. This reduction can create wrinkles
around the mouth and make the cheeks appear hollow, giving a prematurely aged look. Worn teeth also affect the alignment and support of the lips, causing them to look thinner and less defined. No plastic surgery will be able to correct these effects.
Effects on jaw joints and muscles
Worn teeth often lead to a misaligned bite. Over time, this added strain can contribute to temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs), leading to jaw pain, stiffness, and clicking or popping sounds. As the bite changes, the muscles of the jaw and face must work harder to manage the misalignment, leading to chronic tension, neck and shoulder pain, and headaches that affect daily comfort and quality of life.
Causes of worn teeth
Bruxism (teeth grinding): Grinding, especially at night, places excessive pressure on teeth, leading to wear over time..
Erosion: Acidic foods, drinks, and acid reflux can erode enamel, making teeth more susceptible to wear.
Abrasion: Overly aggressive brushing or habits like biting on hard objects can lead to enamel loss.
Aging: With age, enamel naturally thins, increasing susceptibility to wear.
Solutions for correcting worn teeth
Addressing worn teeth involves protecting enamel, restoring lost structure, and ensuring a stable bite. Key treatments include:
Bite guards and occlusal splints: Worn at night, these devices protect teeth from grinding and distribute force more evenly, easing stress on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Restorative dentistry: Bonding, veneers, and crowns can rebuild worn teeth and restore a natural bite, improving function
and aesthetics. Orthodontics may also be needed to correct misalignments.
Dietary and lifestyle changes: Limiting acidic foods and avoiding chewing on hard objects can help prevent further enamel erosion.
Physical therapy and relaxation: For TMDs, exercises and stressreduction techniques like meditation can help relieve jaw tension.
Risks of incorrect bite realignment without proper jaw positioning
Realigning the bite without aligning the jaw joint properly can lead to serious complications. The TMJ must be in a stable, comfortable position before adjusting the bite; otherwise, an improperly aligned bite can worsen joint issues, increasing TMD symptoms, muscle strain, and even causing teeth to shift over time. Ensuring that both the bite and jaw alignment are correct is essential for long-term stability and comfort. For a complimentary evaluation, contact Aesthetic Smile Designs at 818.341.1345

CASA PACIFICA
By Roya Alt
Celebrating 30 years of empowering at-risk youth and families
As Casa Pacifica marks its 30th anniversary, the nonprofit is celebrating by launching a new initiative to address a critical need in Ventura County—supportive housing for young adults transitioning out of foster care or who are facing homelessness. The new housing is one of the first in Ventura County to address the needs of young adults, ages 18 to 25, who are transitioning from public systems, including foster care or juvenile justice, or are at a high risk of homelessness.
“These homes provide more than just a place to live; they offer a community and a chance for vulnerable young adults to grow and thrive,” says Shawna Morris, MPA, CEO of Casa Pacifica.
Transitioning out of foster care can create a time of uncertainty and instability in the lives of young adults. Nationally, an average of 40% of foster youth experience homelessness within two years of leaving the system. Less than 3% of foster youth graduate from college and 25% are incarcerated by the age of 24.
Casa Pacifica recently completed a six-month renovation of three of its residential cottages to create 27 units that accommodate both individuals and single parents and families, nearly tripling the number of transitional age youth the agency can support. Residents will receive extensive on-site services to assist in their transition to self-sufficiency, including case management, education and career development, life skills training, social skills development, and mental health services, through Casa Pacifica’s integrated Transitional Youth Services (TYS) program.
The new semi-independent housing exudes the warmth and communal atmosphere of a college dormitory. Each unit is fully furnished and features its own bedroom and bathroom along with a shared kitchen, laundry, and common areas for socializing or relaxing. One unit is designed specifically to house young adults with children.
Residents can access services such as equine and animal-assisted therapy and a pool and gym and enjoy supervised community outings to help them adjust to independent life.
A new beginning for a vulnerable population
Beyond the amenities, the new homes symbolize Casa Pacifica’s broader mission to provide at-risk youth with the skills and resources they need to succeed. For residents, the supportive housing offers an essential steppingstone to a brighter future. Transportation assistance will be provided to ensure residents can pursue education, find employment, and attend medical appointments.
The supportive housing offers an essential stepping stone to a brighter future.
“The space is great, and the support is so much more than I could have hoped for,” says 19-year-old Sophia, one of the first residents of the new housing. The former foster youth’s teenage years were filled with chaos and uncertainty along with housing insecurity. She frequently sought shelter with friends or partners but never for more than a month at a time.
“I wake up every day and feel that I have direction and that’s not something I’m used to,” she says.
How donor contributions shape Casa Pacifica’s legacy
Casa Pacifica’s accomplishments, including its new supportive housing, are made possible by the continued generosity of donors.
“Our incredible donors have been instrumental in our growth and our evolution from a crisis shelter to the largest nonprofit provider of children’s and adolescent mental health services in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties,” says Morris. “Thanks to their support, we’ve expanded our services and programs, giving children and families the chance to heal, grow, and succeed.”
How you can help this holiday season
As Casa Pacifica reflects on its 30 years of service, the organization invites the community to play a part in its vital mission. This holiday season, there are two impactful ways to help:
Monetary donations
Your financial gift will directly support the critical services Casa Pacifica provides to thousands of children and families every year, from therapeutic services to educational support.
Holiday wish fulfillment
Help brighten the holidays for Casa Pacifica’s youth by fulfilling their holiday wishes. Whether it’s a toy, a warm jacket, or a gift card, your generosity will bring joy to a young person in need.

The country western night included a great BBQ feast, live country music by the band Country Rev, line dance lessons, axe throwing contests, and a kids’ horse bounce house.

Staying in Shape for the Holidays Members of the club know that the best way to enjoy the food, fun, and drinks of the holiday season is to stay on track with their fitness routines. The Festival of Lights
By Lawrence Mitchell
In the dead of winter, the Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah. This year in a rare occurrence, Hanukkah coincides with Christmas, starting exactly on Christmas Day and ending on New Year’s Day. As one additional candle is sequentially lit each night, Hanukkah culminates in a brilliant show of eight colorful lights.
Lighting the Hanukkah candles brightens the darkest days, bringing joy to young and old alike. Families gather to sing cheerful songs and share sweet treats. Jelly-filled donuts, called sufganiyot, and potato latkes served with apple sauce are enjoyed on Hanukkah too. Gifts are exchanged and chocolate gelt is offered to the little ones in exchange for victory in the spinning-top game called dreidel.
While the struggles and nuances of history are often forgotten, Hanukkah celebrates the victory of the Jewish Maccabees against the powerful Greek occupiers of Judea. After their success, they rededicated the temple in Jerusalem but found themselves short of the oil needed to light the lamps. Miraculously, the oil that was only enough to last for just one day lasted eight days, and a holiday was born. But Hanukkah really resulted from the splintering Greek empire. Jews were in a tug-o-war between the Greek Hellenists and Ptolemaic Egyptians—torn into factions and siding with one or the other. The Maccabean peace in Jerusalem didn’t last. Roman forces brutally filled the power vacuum, leading to the birth of Christianity 150 years later.
Hanukkah reminds us to put aside our differences and remember what we all have in common: the universal hope for peace in the dead of winter as we gather with family and friends. So let’s light our dark nights, and celebrate The Festival of Lights! l

Sanity-saving holiday travel tips
It’s that magical time of year when the sparkle of decorations lights up the streets, the air buzzes with excitement, and families pack up to celebrate together. With the whole family in tow, it’s easy for holiday vacations to go from festive to frazzled fast.
Most smooth trips start with thoughtful planning. From hotel reservations to dinner bookings, secure the essentials in advance to avoid last-minute headaches. For flights, early boarding options can be a game-changer so that your family has a chance to settle in before the rush. Consider creating a packing list for each family member to avoid overpacking or, worse, forgetting essentials. Stash refillable water bottles in each carryon plus enough healthy snacks (and holiday treats) to keep the whole gang happy and well-nourished throughout the trek. While not the priority of the season, gifts are also an exciting part of holiday joy—but tricky to transport. Eliminate traveling with larger gifts by shipping them directly to the recipient or to your destination. Gift cards are the perfect option to save space in luggage. Make them more meaningful by choosing a special or sentimental gift-card place for each recipient.
By Kaylie Carafelli
Moms tend to hyperfocus on keeping their families happy, making it even more essential to find moments of downtime for themselves during travel. Pack a good book, download a guided meditation app, and throw on a pair of noise-canceling headphones—lifesavers to tune out the hum of travel and stay centered. If you’re staying in a hotel, sneak in a spa treatment, join a fun workout class, or treat yourself to solo retail therapy. Even an hour of personal space keeps a mom's spirits high and energy ready for any holiday festivities. Even if things end up going a bit off-script, remember the unplanned moments often make the best memories. Safe travels, and may your holidays be as beautiful as the memories you’re creating along the way. l

The pure beer, with a slight citrus taste, was enjoyed by all.

Cobblestone andVines
Nestled in the picturesque hills of Lake Sherwood, a quiet revolution is taking place at Sherwood Country Club. Under the visionary leadership of Nancy and Shanesa Fath, the historic club is undergoing a stunning transformation that marries the best of its storied past with an exciting, modern future. The mother-daughter duo, who helm Studio CT and Cobblestone & Vines, are redefining what it means to be a private country club, infusing it with a fresh sense of exclusivity, sophistication, and warmth.
This project is no ordinary renovation. For Nancy and Shanesa, it is a deeply personal journey rooted in their long-standing connection to the community and a desire to honor Sherwood’s legacy while propelling it forward into a new era. Their mission is clear: to transform the club into a luxurious yet welcoming space where members can enjoy a refined, elevated experience in every corner, from grand ballrooms to intimate lounges.
Their ambitious endeavor began with the iconic Sherwood Ballroom, a space synonymous with grandeur and tradition. While the ballroom had always been the crown jewel of the club, it was in need of a refresh. Nancy and Shanesa approached this challenge with a deep respect for the room’s classic architecture, blending the old with the new in a way that preserves its elegance while giving it a contemporary twist. By adding refined textures, modern lighting, and carefully selected finishes, they have succeeded in creating a space that feels both timeless and fresh—perfect for both grand events and intimate gatherings. The new ballroom is now a place where history meets modernity, seamlessly blending the two.
Robin’s Pub, a beloved social hub for Sherwood members, was next on the agenda. Originally designed as a traditional pub, the space had begun to feel dated and disconnected from the elevated atmosphere the club was aiming for. Nancy and Shanesa envisioned something more than just a typical

pub—they wanted a place where members would want to linger, socialize, and relax in comfort. They transformed Robin’s Pub into a sophisticated lounge, blending rich textures and luxurious finishes to create an intimate, exclusive environment. Today, it stands as a chic retreat for members, where they can enjoy drinks in style, whether after a round of golf or a casual evening with friends.
Now, Nancy and Shanesa have set their sights on the Oak Room, Sherwood’s renowned dining space. Their vision for the Oak Room is a complete reimagining of the dining experience at Sherwood. They plan to create an airy, inviting space that feels light and modern while maintaining the club’s historic charm. Their design will enhance the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, making the Oak Room a place where fine dining and relaxed luxury intersect. It’s all part of their broader goal to elevate every aspect of the Sherwood experience.
For Nancy and Shanesa, this transformative project at Sherwood Country Club is more than a business venture; it is a labor of love. Their work is driven by a deep respect for the club’s heritage, a commitment to the community, and a bold vision for the future. As they continue to bring their innovative designs to life, they are not only enhancing Sherwood’s aesthetic appeal but also redefining what it means to be part of an exclusive country club in the 21st century. Through their work, they are creating spaces that are as welcoming as they are luxurious, fostering a sense of belonging and connection within the community.
As Sherwood Country Club embarks on this exciting new chapter, it does so with the guiding hand of two remarkable designers who are committed to preserving its legacy while reimagining its future. l
HISTORIC WARNER BROS. RANCH CALABASAS
By Brian Rooney
Most of today’s modern Calabasas was once the Warner Bros. Studio Ranch. Excluding Old Town and the Motion Picture Home, the 2,800-acre movie ranch encompassed almost everything from the 101 Freeway south to Mulholland Highway and from Valmar Road on the east side to Las Virgenes Road on the west. The Warner Ranch was utilized over 75 times when large elaborate sets needed to be built (western towns and a Robin Hood castle among them) and when wide open spaces (not found at the main studio property in Burbank) were needed to recreate exotic locations, European battlefields, and the wild west. 91302 Magazine is proud to celebrate our local history, and you’ll see a lot more of it in coming issues. l

No actor shot more films on Warner Ranch than the dashing Errol Flynn (right) seen here in Objective, Burma! —where Warner Ranch played Southeast Asia.
Joan Blondell was a popular actress in the 1940s and 1950s, but she may be best remembered for her small but memorable role as “Vi” the waitress in the smash hit movie musical Grease (1978).
Classic comedians Phil Silvers and Jimmy Durante salute the troops from atop an armored truck in You’re in the Army Now (1941).
James Best and Paul Newman (L-R) starred in The Left Handed Gun ( 1958), one of numerous westerns shot on Warner Ranch.
The big sky of the ranch came in handy for Santa Fe Trail (1940). Errol Flynn is seen on the left with his hands up. Behind him on the horse is future U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
On an undeveloped, almost 3,000-acre property, restrooms, food service, and telephones all had to be brought in. Errol Flynn is seen between takes at a utility truck. The long spool of telephone cable in the lower left likely ran out to the then Highway 101.
Brian Rooney is proud to serve as a historian and archivist for the Calabasas Library. He is the author of the bestselling local history book Three Magical Miles, now in its 5th edition, and is finishing a documentary on the historic 20th Century Fox movie ranch.
LET IT
Snow
By Jacqueline Cleaveland
One January morning in 1962, upon hearing news that it was to snow in the Los Angeles area, residents, no matter the age, peered out their windows with innocent wonder. Stumbling in their slippers towards the front door, all faced a rush of chilly air that sharpened their senses. Front lawns were not green anymore, but rather an expanse of powdery white. A dreamlike coating of coldness laced palm fronds, red roses, cypress trees, cedar-shake roofs, and the tops of mailboxes. It really was snowing.
Surprisingly, throughout the beginning of the 20th century, the Los Angeles area received small snow flurries every few years. But the first truly “midwestern snowstorm” hit the area in January of 1932—during the thick of an otherwise sunbaked Great Depression. This snowstorm still holds the Los Angeles
city record for the greatest cumulative snowfall: two inches. At this time, Calabasas was a farm town with shepherds on every rolling hill. The city of Hidden Hills had not yet been conceived; it was still a valley of untamed nettle weeds and wildflowers.
The next considerable Los Angeles area snowfall was on January 9, 1949. The phenomenon occurred when an Alaskan storm was guided by a troughed jet stream southwards over the Pacific. Schools were canceled, work was put on hold, and locals threw snowballs at each other in the streets. Sticky-inked newspapers exclusively reported on the storm, beholding titles such as, “Record Snowfall Delights and Inconveniences Angelenos.”
Throughout the 1950s, the Greater Los Angeles area was intermittently freckled with snow flurries, but the next real
snow storm was the one that came in 1962, the year after Hidden Hills became incorporated as a city. The formation of the city came to fruition when the Round Meadow Homeowners Association and Long Valley Homeowners Association merged on October 19, 1961. A year later, when the blanket of snow covered the newborn establishment, it made for a sweet, but unexpected one-year commencement.
After the 60s, there was not much snowfall for over twenty-five years—until February of 1989. While Los Angeles city did not experience this snow, a thick blanket of frigid white covered Calabasas, Woodland Hills, west San Fernando Valley, and even the oceanfront hills of Malibu. Beachside hibiscus were frosted, budding orange trees froze, and the storm elicited high surf warnings. Since then, snow has regained its local status as a coveted rarity. In the 21st century, icy remnants have touched Greater Los Angeles, but they were characteristic of sleet as opposed to powdery snow.
But for the Hidden Hills community, there was something special about the 1962 snowstorm. The infant city was still rural and loosely populated. Upon the warning of snow, children closed their sheep safely into barns, while some saddled their horses and rode into the hills—wanting to have the once-in-a-lifetime, cinematic experience of riding through a winter wonderland.
Snow melts, ice thaws, time marches forward, but photographs offer perpetual stasis and immortality. Pioneer Hidden Hills resident, my grandfather Ed Cleaveland, had an artist’s intuition. In the silence of dawn, Ed traipsed along Hidden Hills’ icy roads in his “gentleman rancher” uniform of heavy rubber mucking boots, a duster coat, and an old cowboy hat. He was on a mission. With his Argus 35-millimeter film camera, he humbly photographed his friends' homes, barns, frosted street signs, and the undulating hills of white. These are photographs that even after his passing, he gifts to you.
I like to imagine during the snowstorm of 1962, when nightfall was so dark and cold that the whole world seemed to be in universal chill, inside snow-covered homes dotting Hidden Hills, holiday music echoed. Pamphlets honoring the city’s commencement were framed in living rooms.
Front lawns were not green anymore, but rather an expanse of powdery white.
Families laughed in kitchens as sleepy children lay sideways on couches with their gazes fixated on tinsel and lights. Their tired eyes slowly unfocused from details until the decorations melted into pooling, kaleidoscopic colors. Lulled by winter’s snowy spell, they fell into deep sleep against the backdrop of a historical moment. Select photos courtesy of Edwin Cleaveland. BRANDON'S VILLAGE
Above the tree line
By Lee Aubin
Brandon’s Village Park re-opens in Calabasas. Where limitations are forgotten and differences are celebrated.
In 2006, through the determination of Brandon Kaplan’s mom, Dina, an inclusive playground was built to provide a play space where Brandon and kids of all abilities could imagine, socialize, and have fun side by side. Over time, Brandon’s Village required extensive playground equipment repair and replacement, and the playground was closed for renovations over the past summer months. Unlimited Play, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that helps to plan, design, and build fully accessible playgrounds, worked alongside the Kaplan family, the City of Calabasas, and Little Tikes Commercial to rebuild and restore this inclusive playground.
On the morning of Sunday, October 6th, the Brandon’s Village Playground located at Gates Canyon Park in Calabasas celebrated its reopening on the 100%-certified all-inclusive playground. The reimagined park offers new play structures for ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12 with a new imagination-provoking theme, “Above the Tree Line.”
The upgrades include a new sand area and “Trike Zone” for creative play, updated landscaping for enhanced accessibility and aesthetics, and new fencing for safety and security. There’s also a new Brandon’s Village sign at the park’s entrance featuring the “Above the Tree Line” theme, alongside a memorial plaque to honor the dedication.
Mayor Alicia Weintraub, all city council members, and Michael and Dina Kaplan with son Brandon helped to cut the ribbon to signify the official reopening. The City of Calabasas’s new mascot, a yet-to-be-named hawk, also made his formal debut. l
The Calabasas Pumpkin Festival
The Calabasas Pumpkin Festival took place at Juan Bautista de Anza Park on October 20th to celebrate “CALABAZA,” the Spanish word meaning “pumpkin” or “gourd.” Local legend has it that explorer Juan Bautista de Anza was traveling through the area now known as Calabasas when suddenly, his wagon full of pumpkins overturned—resulting in the area’s first pumpkin patch. Each October, the City of Calabasas Community Services Department hosts this event to celebrate its namesake with friends, family, and fun. Attendees enjoyed shopping in the festival marketplace, trying new pumpkin dishes, dancing and singing along to great bands, and picking their favorite pumpkin in the pumpkin patch.
Highland Hall Waldorf School 70 th Anniversary
Nestled among the rolling Northridge hills of the San Fernando Valley, Highland Hall Waldorf School is an oasis for joyful learning. The sights and sounds are as timeless as the land beneath: honeybees buzzing, violin strings finding their pitch, chickens clucking about the organic farm, and the artful clanging of the blacksmithing forge. Everything at the school is connected, whether the tethers are readily apparent or not. It's obvious to anyone that walks into a classroom: The spaces are rich in their color and warmth. It’s evident in the thoughtfulness of the nurturing teachers. It’s clear in the eyes of the engaged students from preschool through 12th grade. It’s undeniable in the words of the parents sharing a knitting circle or educational forum.
So, why do students love learning at Highland Hall? Because Waldorf education acknowledges each distinct stage of child development and tailors the subject matter and teaching methods to meet them. It transcends mere rote learning and engages the whole child in the educational process. Students build interdisciplinary problem-solving capacities, learn how to authentically express themselves, and develop a genuine life-long love of learning.
And why do parents seek out Highland Hall for their children?
Some families begin attending Highland Hall during parent and child classes that empower newer parents with an arsenal of parenting approaches, help build community with other parents, and allow children to socialize within age-appropriate playgroups.
For preschool and kindergarten-aged children, Highland Hall builds the foundations of literacy and social engagement while fostering wonder and imagination.
In first through eighth grades, students often enjoy the continuity of having the same class teacher for multiple years, which builds meaningful relationships over time, so teachers have a deep insight into each student’s academic and emotional development. The faculty integrates movement, music, rhythm, and storytelling into every subject,

bringing the material to life and fostering a true sense of awe and joy. Lead teachers are supported by special subject teachers who deliver the wide breadth of curriculum—such as Mandarin, Spanish, music, handwork, practical arts, and gardening. The multi-modal curriculum fosters curiosity and creativity, aiming to imbue students with confidence in a way that is both engaging and fun.
Waldorf education at the high school level is college preparatory, and academic achievement is promoted through an intellectually challenging, interdisciplinary, artistically integrated curriculum. Core subjects are explored through lectures, discussion, and written and artistic projects that allow for deep immersion into the subject matter. Independent study, sports teams, clubs, study abroad exchanges, and trips afford students an opportunity to further enrich their experience.
Alumni have recognized the value of a Highland Hall education throughout its 70-year history:
“What Highland Hall gave me was an enthusiasm and passion for learning and being creative. Those things are much more important to your success in college and beyond.”

Over the summer, some Hidden Hills kids took creativity to the next level by writing and starring in their very own movie. From brainstorming ideas to writing a script, everyone collaborated to bring the story to the screen. Each kid got a chance to act, contribute behind the scenes and work with camera operators and even a stuntman for the week. The name of the movie was Sticky Chicken Fingers. It premiered at the Hidden Hills Community Center Theater on September 27, 2024. The kids got to walk down the red carpet and have their “celebrity” photos taken in front of the step & repeat. The premiere event also included a Q&A session, an awards ceremony, and great food, including chicken fingers! Great job, kids! l

Beyond The Ruins: Discovering Greece
By Lawrence Mitchell
Greece and its lovely islands inspire awe and wonder. Our trip begins in the capital of Athens, the cradle of Western civilization. At the crossroads of continents, Athens vibrantly weaves past and present together. A modern train whisks us from the airport to Monastiraki square. Colorful market stalls, fruit carts, and alleyways resonate with the echoes of ancient philosophers, sculptors, and playwrights. Cobblestone paths lead past white marble columns and stone archways. The Agora is a center of civic gathering dating back more than 2500 years.
In the heart of Athens
Past the market stalls of Monastiraki, abundant restaurants offer the everpresent Café Frios, the modern Athenian version of iced coffee. We have one with a delightful square of baklava for a sweet pick-me-up that combats our jetlag. We say “efharistó” for thank you when we are served, trying a few other useful phrases like “kali-mera” for good morning and “kali-spera” for good afternoon. If we are thanked by one of the many kind vendors in Athens, we try to remember to say “parakalo” for you’re welcome
Strolling through the Agora, we find the Temple of Hephaestus. This stunning doric-columned temple is a reminder of Athenian glory in the 5th century before the common era. Adjacent the Agora, we visit Hadrian’s Library, constructed 2000 years ago by the eponymous Roman emperor. Its impressive Corinthian colonnade and elaborate arch-work remain intact after numerous battles and earthquakes.
Near the Acropolis is the Temple of the Olympian Zeus. Built around 2200 years ago, it was soon after pillaged and destroyed by barbarians, yet its multitiered entryway and colonnade remain, along with several massive columns. No trip to Athens is complete until one climbs the daunting Acropolis to face the mighty Parthenon. The uphill trek is not an easy one. But along the way, we find an ancient theater where Menander, Sophocles, and Euripides once staged
their comedies to eager audiences. Today, it has been updated for modern sound and lighting and plays host to international orchestras and pop stars. Winded and exhausted, at last we pass through the incomprehensibly massive portico of the Acropolis. One wants so badly to behold the Parthenon. But we linger instead at this marvel of ancient marble construction and try to appreciate it. Soon enough, we are on the plateau of the mighty Acropolis. An expansive blue and white Greek flag waves proudly atop a towering flagpole at the far end. Yet it is somehow dwarfed by the Parthenon itself. The grand Temple of Athena, goddess of wisdom and warfare, stands as a singular wonder of the Western World, a marvel of ancient handicraft and engineering. We take it all in slowly, respecting its venerability.
As dusk descends, we stroll back toward our hotel through the quaint streets of Kerameikos, from which the English word “ceramics” is derived. We pass through what was once a thriving art colony where potters dug clay from the banks of the Eridanos river to create funerary urns for the notables buried there. We hear the rhythmic sounds of bouzoukis and pass lively performers singing melodies of love. We dine at the foot of the Acropolis and watch as the subway surfaces through an active archeological site where shards of pottery and massive building stones are unearthed. After dinner, we seek out Athens’s famed “street art”— wild and colorful graffiti that covers many buildings. Some find it objectionable, while others consider it beautiful. Facing this juxtaposition, one can almost hear the whispers of Socrates and Plato debating their philosophy and the challenges of democracy. Beyond the capital, we spend a day exploring the island of Aegina.
A day trip to Aegina
We wake early and enjoy breakfast atop our hotel, which looks out at the ever-present Acropolis. One cannot start a day in Greece without tzatziki—the tart yogurt dish mixed with cucumbers and herbs. It is delightfully refreshing. A busy subway takes us down to Piraeus, the seaport of Athens. There, thousands of people are eager to visit any one of hundreds of Greek islands. We board an express boat bound for Aegina. Only 45 minutes by ferry, Aegina is a picturesque island in the Saronic Gulf known for pistachios and stunning landscapes.
Arriving on Aegina, our friendly rental car agent guides us to a charming vehicle no wider than our outstretched arms. But
despite its tiny size, it gets us up the hilly roads and through the pistachio groves. At Aegina’s peak is the Temple of Aphaia, offering us glorious panoramic views across the Aegean to the mainland. On a smaller scale and made of local limestone instead of white marble, this temple duplicates the beauty and architecture of the Parthenon. Along with Poseidon’s Temple and the Parthenon, this place forms a “sacred triangle,” purposely aligned with geometric precision. Greek wonders never cease! Next, we drive down to the quaint fishing village of Perdika and dip our toes in its soft beach sand and crystal-clear waters. Hungry for lunch, we find a seaside restaurant specializing in char-grilled seafood pulled daily from local waters.
Hopping to Moni from Perdika
After lunch, we are drawn to the nearby island of Moni, accessible
by a short boat ride. Moni is a hidden gem that provides stunning views of Aegina’s rocky inlets and sparkling blue waters. Upon arriving, we find a friendly beach bar with lounge chairs lined up for the picking. Wild deer roam freely among abundant peacocks. We snorkel the turquoise coves and mingle in the surf with good-natured sailors arriving on boats large and small. The tranquility of Moni is a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Athens, offering a moment of respite in nature’s embrace. As the sun begins to set, casting a golden hue over Aegina, we reflect on our whole adventure. From the historical marvels of Athens to the serene natural beauty of Aegina and Moni, this journey is a reminder of the rich tapestry of experiences Greece has to offer. Each ancient site and sun-dappled island tells a unique story, connecting us to the past while grounding us in the present. l

RISE TO THE OCCASION
By Lee Aubin
by Shannon Farar-Griefer
A
chef's knead to share her passion for sourdough
Photographed
Shannon Farar-Griefer is a Hidden Hills resident, a mom of three sons, an ultra-marathon runner, a philanthropist, and a professionally trained chef with a passion for healthy organic foods. Her latest culinary obsession of making her own sourdough bread from scratch has quickly caught on throughout the community. Eager to share her passion, Shannon opened her home and kitchen to over 20 friends and neighbors on the evening of October 26th to host a sourdough bread workshop. Shannon also hired a sommelier so that her friends could enjoy tasting an array of wines, and she provided a delicious charcuterie board to enhance the experience.
Every baker’s dough will be different, depending on the environment, ingredients, and individual techniques, and that is what makes sourdough so personal. However, once you grasp the fundamentals, this hands-on part of sourdough baking will soon feel second nature.
The fruits of the workshop attendees’ labor required an overnight cold ferment, where participants could add their own signature score, followed by a 45-minute baking time in their own kitchens. At the end of the workshop, Shannon was thrilled that her friends left not just with dough ready to bake but also with a newfound passion.
Shannon began her sourdough journey by reading books, browsing the web, and watching videos. In doing so, she realized that making sourdough from scratch is about the “feel” and knowing what to look for in the dough. Once she gained confidence, she began experimenting with different flours, hydration levels, and techniques. “My approach to sourdough requires patience, as the entire process takes between 18 and 24 hours,” explains Shannon, “but I told my friends not to worry since much of the process is hands off, allowing for lengthy breaks between steps.”
Shannon explained that the levain, or levain starter, is a fermented mixture of flour and water that is used to make bread by adding it to dough as a leavening agent and flavoring part. It can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours for the levain to become ripe, bubbly, and ready to use. The primary focus of the workshop was the “bulk ferment” process. Shannon explains, This stage is where you truly learn to understand and interact with your dough. It is also the trickiest part of the process, where many home bakers want to give up.
Shannon believes that sourdough is a “gift that connects us to both history and health.” After a few years of baking, she became fascinated with the heritage grains used in breadmaking. She researched local farms and those across the country that grow the best heirloom wheat and grains. She now mills her own flour from varieties like einkorn, spelt, rye, and Joaquin Oro—grains that make incredibly flavorful, nutritious breads. To that end, Shannon bought a 6.5-acre property 30 minutes from her Hidden Hills home where she plans to expand her workshops. On this small farm, she hopes to explore everything from sourdough bread and pastas to pizzas and snacks, all made from scratch and a gut-healthy sourdough starter. “I’ll also be growing a homestead kitchen garden and harvesting lavender and honey from our bees,” adds Shannon. “And to think, it all started with one simple loaf of bread.” @ultrashannon

In a medium stainless-steel pot over medium heat, melt butter until foamy. Add ginger, shallot, lemongrass, Thai chili and sweat until soft (about 7 minutes). Add the curry powder and toast for 2 minutes, careful not to burn. Deglaze with white wine and reduce until almost dry. Add the coconut milk, carrot juice, and lime leaves. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and simmer for 10 minutes. While curry is coming to a boil, blend all the ingredients of the fruit puree into a puree. After the curry has simmered for 10 minutes, add the fruit puree and simmer another 10 minutes. Strain through a fine mesh sieve. Season with salt and fresh lime juice. Cool immediately.
Forbidden rice
Bring a pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add 3 cups rice and simmer until cooked to your likeness, approximately 20 minutes. Strain and cool on a lined baking tray.
Roasted carrots
Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Peel multi-colored baby carrots. Cut into quarters, toss with EVOO, add salt, and lightly roast until tender.
Scallops
I recommend U-10 scallops because they are larger. Try to find a source that sells them fresh and not frozen. If they were frozen, they will not sear well because they have retained a lot of moisture. I recommend 3–4 scallops per person.
To cook
Lightly season scallops with salt. Pat dry. Preheat a sauté pan until very hot. Add an oil with a high smoke point such as grape seed. Add a liberal amount of oil and watch until the oil simmers in the pan.
Add the scallops and let sit for several seconds before moving around to create a good sear. Once you have a golden-brown sear on one side, flip the scallops, add a knob of butter, and baste scallops until medium rare. Total cook time should be about 3 minutes.
To finish
In a small pot, heat the rice with a bit of lemon juice and olive oil and sliced chives and add to plate. Place the seared scallops on top of the rice. Heat the curry and add around the plate. Place the roasted carrots on top of the scallops and garnish with the Thai basil and cilantro.
Bon appétit!

The Television Motion Picture Car Club Cars and Coffee at Lavaggio
It was another beautiful Saturday morning in Southern California and the rumble of hot rods, classic cars, and exotic cars filled the air as the Television Motion Picture Car Club arrived at Lavaggio— the Art of Auto Detailing in Agoura Hills.
The semi-annual event at Lavaggio is always well attended by club members as well as other industry enthusiasts from all over California. Producers, directors, post-production people, actors, stuntmen, and stuntwomen…the club has representatives from every aspect of TV and film—a truly passionate group of people who find any reason to get together and share their love of community and automobiles.
Lavaggio is always a destination for the club as they have been hosting Television Motion Picture Car Club events there for almost a decade. The detailing center is luxurious, the staff is incredible, and of course, the detailing is world class. Lavaggio provided a beautiful breakfast for the club and a wonderful ambiance for all to enjoy. As the morning wrapped, the club had a great time, new members joined, and it was a tremendous success.
To learn more about the Television Motion Picture Car Club, visit TMPCC.org. If you work in (or have worked in) the television, motion picture, music, radio, sports, or motorsports industries and would like to join, go to the JOIN TMPCC area of the website. l
