A Note From the Publishers

Spring represents rebirth, renewal, and new beginnings. It’s also a time that many reset and re-organize—which is what we’ve done at 91302 Magazine. I’m delighted to finally announce that Lonna Weber is the official co-publisher!

Spring also symbolizes hope for a better future, which is our fervent prayer for the people and families who lost their homes or were displaced by the recent fires. In this issue, we are honored to share the story of the iconic restaurant Moonshadows, beautifully written by JD Slajchert.

JD’s family co-owned this beloved landmark, which was completely consumed in the fires on January 7th. JD also lost his family home in the Woolsey Fire in 2018. We think you’ll be inspired by his courage and resolve.

As with many past disasters, musicians have, once again, jumped in to lend their voices and talent to raise money, hope, and spirits. Our feature this issue, “Love & Grit,” tells the story of local musicians Windy Wagner and Chad Cromwell, who have amassed over 80 gold and platinum records during their stellar careers. They also lost their home, recording studio, and cherished music awards and memorabilia in the Woolsey Fire. This story reflects on what was lost, what was gained, and how they rebuilt and recovered—all powered by music and their passion for each other. We also shine a light on many of the local musicians who donated their talents to raise disaster relief funds, as well as young emerging local musicians who are just starting their music careers.

Spring is also considered one of the best seasons to sell or buy a new home. In this issue, we are proud to present personal profiles of our community’s most prestigious Realtors—all with the skills and expertise to guide their clients every step of the way.

Finally, we want to wish a happy Mother’s Day to all our moms, who undoubtably have the most challenging and rewarding jobs on earth.

Meet Tom, one of our esteemed advisors, with his loyal companion, Ringo. Their connection reflects the trust and loyalty that guide everything we do at Whittier Trust. Whether it’s guiding the management of your real estate holdings or supporting your family’s broader investment goals, Tom ensures your assets are cared for with the utmost dedication, safeguarding your legacy for generations to come. Trust isn’t just a word. It’s a bond.

From the Pharmacist

My doctor recommended I get a pneumonia shot. I thought I didn’t need one until I was 65. I am only 53. Should I get one?

The CDC has recently changed its recommendation for the pneumonia vaccine to anyone age 50 and over. It is recommended for adults age 19 to 49 with chronic conditions, including diabetes, asthma, COPD, chronic heart disease, and chronic kidney disease. It is also recommended for anyone who smokes.

Pneumonia is a bacterial lung infection. It is spread person to person by coughing and close contact. The lungs fill with fluid, making it difficult to breathe. Other symptoms include chest pain, fatigue, fever, and coughing. Pneumonia can last weeks. Prevnar20 (the pneumonia vaccine) covers 20 strains of bacteria and causes the body to create antibodies to fight the infection when exposed. Pneumonia does not have any “season;” it can happen at any time of the year. One single dose covers you for your lifetime; however, the recommendations have changed frequently over the past 10 years as new vaccines have become available. If you have had a pneumonia vaccine in the past, check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if a newer one is needed.

This vaccine has been available for over 10 years and has been administered to millions of people. It is safe and effective. Side effects include a sore arm and redness or swelling at the injection site. Some people may experience headaches, fatigue, and muscle aches.

In the Know: Building An Art Collection with Arushi Kapoor

Meet Arushi Kapoor, a leading art advisor and founder of The Agency Art House, a platform dedicated to making art collecting and investment accessible to a new generation of collectors.

With years of experience navigating the art market, Arushi has cultivated a deep understanding of both the cultural and financial aspects of art. Here, she shares insights on how to balance personal tastes with investment potential, and how to make smart and meaningful choices while building your collection.

How did you first discover your personal taste in art, and how has it evolved? Were there any specific artists or movements that were drawn to early on?

My taste in art has definitely taken a journey—constantly evolving as I grow and learn. Early on, I was all about aesthetics, but over time, my interests started to align with artists who not only spoke to my values but also made sense as smart investments for building my collection. As I’ve navigated the worlds of galleries, museums, artist estates, and auction houses, my instincts sharpened, and my understanding of the art market deepened.

Nowadays, I’m excited by artists and movements that challenge the status quo, especially in this dynamic and increasingly transparent art market. Historic icons like Basquiat and Kusama are always relevant and remain blue-chip investments, while I personally love the vibrancy of bold colors. Artists like Derrick Adams, Olafur Eliasson, and Jen Guidi also speak to me on a personal level. Right now, I’m particularly drawn to top-notch pieces from the South Asian art scene—collecting works by Souza, M.F. Husain, Paresh Maitey, Viraj Khanna and Sakti Burman. The South Asian art market is growing at the speed of its booming economies, and it’s thrilling to be part of that momentum. Ultimately, my appreciation for art still comes down to that initial connection—it’s about finding pieces that resonate and make a lasting impact.

Are there any misconceptions about art collecting that you are working to dispel through your service, The Agency Art House?

While art has always been rich in culture, it has also had long high barriers to entry as an investment. In the ’70s and ’80s, galleries, institutions and art dealers intentionally kept things exclusive,

largely because information and valuations were hard to come by and gave them a leg up with collectors. The art world, being relatively unregulated, has seen some incredible returns. In fact, research from Fortune shows that contemporary art appreciated at an impressive 12.6% compound annual growth rate between 1995 and 2022, even outperforming the S&P 500!

At The Agency Art House, we’re on a mission to open up the art market to a new generation of collectors. We believe that art should be more transparent and accessible. Whether you’re working with a modest budget or seeking high-end pieces, there are great art investments at every level. Our team of vetted art advisors offers expert guidance, education, and the resources needed to make informed decisions. We’re also committed to breaking down the barriers and eliminating the less-than-honest practices that have cropped up over the past few decades. As the world becomes more connected and cosmopolitan, our goal is to make art—a truly alternative investment—available to as many people as possible.

Are there any artists who are consistently a good investment?

Much like any other industry, the art world goes through cycles. Ultimately, art investment requires both financial acumen and a genuine appreciation for its cultural significance. In general, the art landscape can shift from bullish phases, where prices soar amid economic prosperity, to bearish times marked by declines during downturns.

LOVE & GRIT

WINDY WAGNER AND CHAD

CROMWELL

Some love stories are written in ink, others in melody. But for Windy Wagner and Chad Cromwell, theirs unfolds like a country ballad—etched in music, loss, resilience, and an unyielding spirit that refuses to fade. Together, they have lived a life that mirrors the music industry itself—an unforgiving climb where only the strong survive, where thick skin and tenacity are prerequisites, and where getting knocked down only means it’s time to get back up. Between them, Windy and Chad have amassed over 80 gold and platinum records, woven into the fabric of some of the greatest musical moments of a generation. They’ve carved their names into the hearts of the industry, playing and singing alongside legends. Their Malibu Lakeside studio was a sanctuary where sound and soul intertwined. But life, much like music, is unpredictable. The Woolsey Fire of 2018 reduced their sanctuary to ash, forcing them to confront the brutal reality of loss and the even harsher ordeal of rebuilding.

A career forged in passion and rhythm

Chad Cromwell has been a quiet driving force in the music industry for decades, his drumming the heartbeat pulsing through the albums of Neil Young, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton, and countless others. His work, often behind the scenes, speaks for itself—woven into the soundtracks

of millions of lives. Yet, despite a career overflowing with accolades, Chad is not the kind of man to talk about his accomplishments.

Windy Wagner, a powerhouse vocalist with the kind of energy that lights up a room, has lent her voice to artists spanning every genre, including KD Lang, Ringo Starr, and Rick Springfield, just to name a few. She has graced the stages of the world’s biggest productions, her voice blending seamlessly into history. A life of music brought them together, and music is what has held them through the storm.

The fire that changed everyone

In an instant, everything they built was gone. The Woolsey Fire swept through with a vengeance, taking with it their home, their studio, and their memories— Grammy and gold records, decades of personal archives, instruments, and irreplaceable artifacts from a lifetime in music all turned to ash. But what the fire didn’t take was their resolve. Years later, the pain still lingers—not only in the charred remains of their past but in the relentless battle against red tape, bureaucracy, and an exhausting system that makes rebuilding nearly impossible. In many ways, it mirrored the music industry itself—where perseverance, sheer grit, and relentless determination are the only ways forward.

Rebuilding against the odds

For many, the Woolsey Fire marked the end of their Malibu Lakeside story. Over five years later, many of those homes remain empty lots, victims of an agonizing rebuilding process that made the flames look almost merciful. Insurance battles, city nightmares, and endless regulations made even the most determined hearts weary. But Windy and Chad refused to be another statistic. Brick by brick, note by note, they fought their way back, using the same resilience that carried them through the highs and

lows of the music world. They are among the few who have successfully rebuilt, standing as a testament to the power of perseverance. Their new home, though different, carries the soul of what was lost. Their studio, still a work in progress, is once again a place where magic happens.

Recently, Windy managed to recover 35 of Chad’s Grammy nominations and wins out of his original 83, purchasing the certificates from the Recording Academy and having them framed. But instead of placing them on proud display, she lined the walls of their studio bathroom with them, a humorous and heartfelt nod to a career that has never been about accolades but about the love of music.

A love story defined by tenacity

Through it all, Windy and Chad remain inseparable, their bond as unshakable as the rhythms they create. They sit comfortably in their newly rebuilt home, glancing at each other, finishing each other’s sentences—a duo that has weathered storms both literal and metaphorical. They speak of the fire not just in terms of loss, but as a chapter that tested and proved their strength. When asked what kept them going, Windy simply says, “Music teaches you to push through. It teaches you rejection; it teaches you resilience. And if you want something bad enough, you fight for it.”

Chad nods, “You don’t quit. You just don’t. You get up and walk up that hill. Whether it’s music, rebuilding a house, or rebuilding a life, you don’t stop until the work is done. This is our home.”

An inspiration to many

In the aftermath of the Woolsey Fire, Windy and Chad’s story stands as a beacon of hope. They faced the unimaginable and built their way back, proving that with passion, persistence, and love, even the greatest losses can be overcome. They didn’t just survive; they reclaimed. l

Hundreds Protest in Calabasas Against Toxic Fire Debris Disposal

Hundreds of concerned residents, celebrities, and medical experts attended protests to fight against the disposal of fire debris from the Palisades Fire in the Calabasas landfill off Lost Hills Road. While City Attorney Pam Lee argued that the facility is not permitted to accept hazardous waste and toxic ash from burned structures, a superior court judge and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors denied a request for a temporary restraining order. Despite the setbacks, Calabasas is not giving up. Protect Calabasas, a grassroots organization, is urging residents to sign up at protectcalabasas.org to force the government to follow its own laws, test the debris, and send it to an appropriate facility to avoid potential health consequences. The city attorney will also be filing a preliminary injunction against toxic ash being dumped at the county-owned facility to halt the debris disposal ahead of a trial outcome—if Calabasas can show that the city will otherwise suffer irreparable harm. Mayor Peter Kraut acknowledged that there will be Phase 2 debris coming to the landfill for now, but the city is pursuing regulatory solutions for inspections, air quality, and groundwater monitoring. The next hearing for the landfill will be June 27. Photography by Luke Jen

"As a pediatrician, I’m very concerned about the health risks tied to the wildfire debris being sent to local landfills in L.A. Right now, the cleanup is moving forward, with ash and soil from the fires being dumped at a landfill close to homes, schools, and parks. Even though the county says they’re sorting out hazardous materials, there’s still a chance that harmful substances like asbestos, lead, and mercury could remain. Over time, I worry we might see more cases of cancer, autoimmune issues, and other health problems, especially for kids living nearby. It’s a serious concern that needs more attention." —

Navigating the Autism Cliff : Helping Your Child Transition Into Adulthood

For parents of a child on the autism spectrum, the 18th birthday brings a mix of emotions—pride, excitement, and often, deep concern. As childhood support systems fade, parents are faced with what many call the “autism cliff”—a sudden shift where educational, financial, and healthcare structures change overnight. But you don’t have to navigate this transition alone. With thoughtful planning, you can ensure your child’s future remains secure while empowering their growing independence.

Legal and financial tools to provide security

Fortunately, California offers legal safeguards that help parents continue providing support while respecting their child’s autonomy.

Limited conservatorships: Unlike full conservatorships, these offer a tailored approach that allows parents to assist with key decisions while preserving their child’s independence in areas where they thrive.

Special needs trusts: These trusts ensure financial security without jeopardizing access to government benefits like SSI or Medi-Cal, covering expenses that enhance quality of life, from therapies to education.

ABLE accounts: A complement to special needs trusts, these accounts allow individuals with disabilities to save money without affecting their eligibility for benefits.

Durable powers of attorney: If your child has the capacity to understand legal documents, a power of attorney for healthcare and finances provides a less restrictive way to ensure their well-being.

Start planning early

The best time to begin is around age 17. Early planning allows parents to put the right protections in place before crucial services change, preventing gaps in support. By combining these legal tools, parents can create a safety net that fosters both security and independence for their child. l

I’m

Moonshadows

La Dolce Far Niente

Written in loving memory of Andrea and Marco Bullo

I’ve never been fond of the word “was.” It’s a long story for me, but the word “was” implies a sense of the past I feel discredits the relevance and power of today, the “now” or the “is.” For example, when someone passes on and I speak about them, they are, to me, and forever will be, an “is” because even though they’re physically gone, it doesn’t mean their lessons, memories, and moments won’t forever be present. In many ways, some of the people I’ve lost are even more alive and present and still teaching me now. They’re still here.

On Tuesday, January 7th, my family's beloved Moonshadows restaurant in Malibu was lost in the Palisades Fire. The devastation that consumed my family and I that day was as

heavy as an avalanche, one that crashes over you as you sleep in the night, only burying you further and further below as you attempt to claw your way out of the mountain of snow and ice. With each struggling minute, hour, and day that passed in the beginning, it was as if we were falling deeper and deeper, losing oxygen and daylight. We couldn’t breathe.

I remember doing my absolute best to occupy space beside my mom and stepdad as I watched them process this tragedy—a tragedy that unfortunately is not at all foreign to us.

In 2018, we found ourselves wrapped in a very similar tragedy, the Woolsey Fire. In that fire, we did not lose our restaurant,

but instead, we lost our home—a loving, warm home turned to ashes overnight. It was then, in the early moments, that I first felt that feeling of being buried alive—the sinking and the isolation.

But that January day when the Palisades Fire began, I watched my mom and stepdad relive this shock with the unbelievable reality that this had indeed happened again—lightning struck twice. We truly couldn’t believe it—the shock was cold and immediate. My heart sunk and ached so deeply for them both. I wanted to take hold of them and never let go, and as I hugged them tight, a flash of memories and incredible moments experienced at the restaurant went before my eyes.

As any grief settles into your soul, I always attempt to remind myself that the reason this pain exists is because the moments were so pure, so good. Throughout my entire lifetime, some of my most meaningful and impactful experiences have taken place around the dinner tables at my family’s restaurants: Moonshadows, The Sunset, and Ca Del Sole. It was there at Moonshadows, looking out at those breathtaking views, that I experienced my first glasses of Italian wines paired with belly laughs that carried for days. It was there that I would go early just to grab a moment with Alessandro or Andrea before the rest of my party arrived. It was there that I was taught to practice the famous Italian philosophy “La dolce far niente,” which translates to “the

sweetness of doing nothing.” The leisurely Italian lifestyle is an idea that means that dinner isn’t over when you finish your meal; in fact, it’s just getting started.

So, my heart hurts because there was so much beauty, so much inspiration, and so many lessons learned—and these things were wiped away by the harsh flames in an instant. But experience and proper guidance has helped me realize that this isn’t true at all. In fact, those meaningful, powerful, and impactful moments that we shared over time at Moonshadows are stronger than any wooden beam or cement door. It’s those remarkable moments that will live on forever—in all of us.

To put it simply—we will always have Moonshadows in our hearts, minds, and souls. The important parts of us, no fire can ever take. The physical place has been taken, yes, but our experiences lived in that space now hold a much

greater significance. I can tell you that even now as I write this, my sense of clarity for the memories experienced at Moonshadows has never felt stronger, and I’m confident that will only continue. And the best part is that I know this is true for so many others out there as well.

One thing I’ve shared with people who asked how I’m feeling is that when we lost our house to the Woolsey Fire, it was a deeply personal experience. But after we lost our restaurant more recently, it didn’t feel like a personal loss but more of a community one—a communal grief. It was in the constant outpouring of love and support around me that I felt the true power of community we’d created in the form of everlasting and permanent memories—the lived experiences that have blossomed into memories that will never be forgotten.

For me, stepping away has been an important part of processing all that has happened in our cherished community

and to our restaurant. Currently, I’m sitting here writing this surrounded by a wonderfully lush landscape beside an outdoor coffeehouse in Miami.

It’s February, but it feels like summer. And in this peaceful moment of stillness, calm, and warm sunshine, I can clearly see that Moonshadows Malibu will never be a “was” but will always be an “is”—an “is” not just for me but for the millions of people that have enjoyed and created countless memories there.

We are not the ashes, but instead, we’re the faces of our gracious staff, our breathtaking views, and the countless smiles of all of you that have enjoyed that wonderful space. We are all the people that found love at Moonshadows, and we are the seaside landmark along Pacific Coast Highway. And that is evergreen, permanent, and forever etched into stone. l

Restaurant-goers may find their favorite classic dishes from the Moonshadows menu now available at The Sunset in Malibu.

DEEP PURPLE DREAMS

“If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you. If mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me…”

These are the opening lines from Led Zeppelin’s sentimental love-ballad “Thank You.” This song reminds me to be grateful for the fragile beauty we all enjoy in the 91302, a beauty that was sorely tested this past January. Now, with roses in bloom, we must think of those who lost so much then—and be grateful for what we still have.

The power of music came up when I recently had a profound talk with my mom, aged 90. “If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what song would it be?” I asked her. She answered, “Deep Purple,” which surprised me at first. I had never heard of it.

I thought she might be referring to the 1960s acid rock band of the same name, with the famed hit “Smoke on the Water.” But alas, she was not. “Deep Purple” is a hauntingly beautiful melody from the 1940s. Its tender and intimate lyrics recall a lost love. Her selection revealed so much that I appreciate in her—her warmth and sentimental memories of a long and illustrious life. I am thankful that she shared this with me.

So, I encourage you in the 91302 to give your special moms a unique gift this Mother’s Day by asking them to share about the music they love. You just may find a wonderful sentiment, as I did in the “Deep Purple” lyrics: “In the still of the night, once again, I hold you tight. Though you're gone, your love lives on when moonlight beams, and as long as my heart will beat, we'll always meet here in my deep purple dreams.” l

Violet Saturn

In a world where music often is predictable, Violet Saturn is anything but. The sibling duo, Lauren and Spencer Carr Reed, attended Malibu High School and lived in Hidden Hills briefly after the Woolsey Fire. They exploded onto the scene in 2020, where their song "Young and Dumb" became the most played track on 95.5 KLOS. The band quickly gained momentum and landed a major record deal. Like true pop music survivors, when the industry threw them a curveball— being dropped during Covid, they didn’t fold. Instead, they doubled down, proving that real music isn’t about contracts or industry politics; it’s about a love and passion for making music. Their song "Love U Madly" has since been featured on the video game Rock Band

Violet Saturn’s music blends catchy, relatable pop lyrics with an underlying edge, influenced by their rock background growing up. Their latest single "Tell Me Boy," has been described by critics as a Taylor Swift song with a Paramore edge. Lauren’s strong-yet-ethereal voice creates a passionate and angsty track. Now in 2025, Violet Saturn is gearing up for big things. While details are still under wraps, they’ve hinted at exciting surprises and lots of new music. If history is any indication, it’s going to be worth the wait. If you haven’t already, it’s time to tune in; don’t be late to the party. They are constantly creating music related content, and you can check them out on all social platforms. violetsaturncom @violetsaturnofficial l

Delivered Signed, Sealed,

A Hidden Hills Charity Musicale

Written and photographed by Britt Aaronson

The beloved Valentine’s Charity Musicale made its return to Hidden Hills, showcasing the extraordinary talent of local residents in a lively musical comedy. Thanks to the Hidden Hills Community Association and the Theater Committee, attendees enjoyed an festive evening complete with elegant décor, gourmet appetizers and desserts, and a signature cocktail celebrating the season of love.

This year’s event raised close to $15,000 in support of three deserving charities: S.T.A.R.T. Rescue, THE Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools, and the California Fire Foundation. It was a testament to the generous heart of the Hidden Hills community. l

LOST HIGHWAY

When the price of convenience was too steep

In 1940s postwar America, the economy was booming and our new interstate highway system put the mobilization of people and goods into high gear.

Los Angeles' population was growing rapidly in 1958, and Caltrans began planning a new freeway that would connect to I-5 in Burbank, run west through the center of the San Fernando Valley, then turn south and course through Malibu Canyon to the Pacific Coast Highway.

This project would have created major upheaval in the San Fernando Valley. Thousands of homeowners would have needed to be bought out, and the quiet, rural nature of the central Santa Monica Mountains would have dramatically changed with a major roadway running between Calabasas and Agoura.

LAS VIRGENES ROAD

Where Las Virgenes Road crosses over the 101 is seen here in a historic rendering looking north. The ambitious Highway 64 would have spanned from Interstate 5 near Burbank and run west through the San Fernando Valley, turning south into Malibu Canyon to the coast.

FUTURE MUREAU ROAD

Illustrations courtesy of Caltrans and the City of Calabasas Library, Special Collections.

Highway 64 would have been carved into the east wall of Malibu Canyon with tall pillars supporting the roadway as it crossed over to the west wall (on right here). Malibu Canyon Road is at the bottom here with the tunnel at the left.

It is noteworthy that Caltrans called this proposed route "Highway 64" instead of a freeway. Highways allow drivers to pull off anywhere to access side streets and local businesses, but this is definitely a freeway with exits only every mile or two. The watered-down designation may have been a preemptive strategy as Caltrans feared public outcry on the project—for good reason.

Even 60 years ago, this roadway could have cost over $1 billion with a large chunk of the expense going to buy out thousands of homeowners in the San Fernando Valley where the route would cut through. In 1975, plans for Highway 64 were finally abandoned by Caltrans, and the state held a huge sale, selling the roughly $10 million worth of land it had accumulated in preparation for the freeway's construction.

LASVIRGENESROAD

It's worth remembering that in 2007, Soka University (at today's King Gillette Ranch) closed its campus along Las Virgenes Road after a long expansion battle to increase the student body from 400 to 4,000. The expansion plans included a concrete flyover ramp off and over Las VIrgenes Road to get staff and student cars quickly into a campus parking structure.

The Las VIrgenes Road/Malibu Canyon Road portion of the Highway 64 route has been designated a state scenic corridor and is now protected from excessive development and advertising signs. It is ironic that this protection falls under the state scenic highway program.

FUTURE DE ANZA PARK

This monstrous interchange is what Caltrans was planning for the southern terminus of Highway 64 at PCH. Look closely to the left of 64 here and you'll see Malibu Canyon Road snaking along and going underneath the 64.

Brian Rooney is proud to serve as a historian and archivist for the Calabasas Library. He is the author of the bestselling local history book Three Magical Miles, now in its 5th edition, and is finishing a documentary on the historic 20th Century Fox movie ranch.
