LAXMI HUSSAIN STUDIO TOUR

Artist Laxmi Hussain creates her blue-toned feminist illustrations from her minimal, zen-like studio in London’s Wembley Park

Known for her ethereal illustrations celebrating the female form, Laxmi’s work is instantly recognisable, with free-flowing organic lines and the strong use of a vibrant shade of inky blue, dominant throughout her art.

‘My work is a celebration of women,’ Laxmi explains. ‘I celebrate our differences, but also highlight that this is what makes us incredible, by painting everything in the same colour.’

In this way, Laxmi has created a starkly individual and feminist aesthetic, exploring diversity through varying body shapes and skin colour. She seeks inspiration from women who catch her eye on the street or from scrolling Instagram, and from nature too - elements of which fill her north London studio space.

A MINDFUL SPACE The first thing to strike you about Laxmi’s studio are the floor-toceiling windows, which allow a soft, diffused light to flow through the room. Combined with the white walls and predominantly minimalist décor, this creates a zen-like space that evokes a sense of mindfulness.

Her studio is largely white, other than the splashes of vibrant blue shown in her work and contained within glass bottles of ink. A large, cerulean cabinet housing original artwork is one of Laxmi’s most beloved objects – she purchased it second-hand, and has a fond memory of the previous owner remarking that it was going to a good home.

‘Blue draws calm in me. Its varying tones are so fascinating, and experimenting with different types of blue is what drives much of my work,’ Laxmi explains, reminiscing over discovering a bottle of blue Indian ink in an art store many years ago.

There’s little fuss in her studio; the objects displayed around the room are mostly functional, essential for her practice. But that’s not to say that her studio is stark, or strictly minimal in any way. Laxmi describes how the natural woods and warm tones of her furniture add a hint of her home to the modern warehouse space. Her house has a similar aesthetic to the studio, but is scattered with more decorative objects such as glazed bowls and ceramic vases, inherited from her mother. A row of plants sits on the floor in her studio - in fact, there are plants everywhere, and there are small collections of rocks, shells and pebbles from her trips abroad. ‘Nature is a big part of who I am,’ says Laxmi. ‘I feel closely connected to it.’

The desk chairs are two of her favourite pieces in the studio. She found a cane and chrome original Marcel Breuer chair outside a building, and fell in love with both the design and the signs of wear. Her other chair is from Ikea, and is perfect for sitting in when taking a break – ‘I can be on my feet for long periods of time in the studio, so it’s nice to have a chair to relax in.’ She sourced the table-top of her work bench from a hardware store, completing it with Ikea legs to create a surface large enough for her work.

For Laxmi, her art is like therapy; her work the ideal way of unwinding from her busy days, but she also enjoys rearranging her space, moving furniture around, to create an ambiance that feels peaceful and calming, and doesn’t distract from her work. ‘One evening, I moved my desk six times!’ she laughs.

SPACE TO GROW Laxmi moved into this new studio in Wembley Park earlier this year, upscaling from her previous studio in Queens Park. The old workspace was shared with six other creatives, her new studio is a larger, brighter room, enabling her to grow both the scale and size of her work.

As part of a new-build development which houses 25 other artists in separate spaces, this studio has proved to be the perfect blank canvas for Laxmi. The whitewashed walls and concrete floors provide a simple backdrop for displaying her strong, bold, blue paintings.

Laxmi grew up in Wembley and now lives in the area again. Having her studio close to her family home gives more flexibility for working while looking after her children. Laxmi balances her artwork with a day job in marketing and property management, and looking after her children. She retreats to her studio three evenings a week, after spending time with her family and when her children have gone to bed.

Where did the idea for a ‘secret’ shop come from?

My family and I had spent many happy hours in the garden of this brilliant pub, I had always dreamed of having my own shop one day and the garden at The Horse Guards pub is such a tranquil, special place. I thought it would provide the perfect home for a small shop hidden amongst the greenery so I contacted Sam, Ben and Misha who own the pub, and they were hugely supportive.

What drew you to house your shop in a wooden cabin?

I’m Canadian and grew up spending my summers on the Northern Lakes where wooden cabins with wrap-around porches are a way of life. They blend in with the natural environment and enable people to enjoy nature whatever the weather. I have always wanted to recreate one of these and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.

How did you create the building?

I was lucky enough to be put in touch with the brilliant woodsman and eco-building enthusiast, Ben Law, known for the incredible Woodland House featured on Grand Designs. We met over a pint at the pub and I sketched out my Canadian style wooden cabin idea on a napkin, he was immediately onboard with the project, so much so that six weeks later it was built!

What lies behind the name ‘The King and I’?

Because of his surname (Priestley), my husband was nicknamed Elvis in his twenties. When he started working in Formula One it was the name he was known by and he has always been Elvis to me. We work hard to support each other and to help each other to follow our dreams. It isn’t always easy but it lies at the heart of our relationship. Naming my shop ‘The King and I’ is my nod to him and to the fact it wouldn’t have happened without his support.

Have you always loved interiors?

We have spent many years renovating properties and I’ve always enjoyed creating an interior style that I love. When we sold the houses, our buyers always said how much they loved what we had done and asked to buy all the contents along with the building. This gave me the confidence to follow the creative path I had dreamt about. I’ve also always had a passion for travel, I like to bring home interesting pieces which make my home feel unique and help me educate my kids about the wider world; travelling as a form of education for them is hugely important to me.

When I first opened, I was doing an upholstery course and would sit in the shop and work on a piece, people would ask to buy the chairs and often ask me to do up other items for them.

It was a great way to get my upholstery done, to find new business and to fall into conversation.

A thoughtful, creative and bohemian style infuses the interior of jewellery designer and maker Stevie-Leigh Ayres’ Devon rented family home

In the two years since she first moved in with her family, Stevie-Leigh Ayres has transformed their two-bedroom Victorian home from an eclectic mishmash into a calming, light and airy space. Neutral colours, upcycled furniture and a relaxed feel combine with a strong connection to nature, to fill each room with a soft simplicity.

‘I would describe our home as earthy,’ says Stevie. ‘I’ve tried to make a very calming, fresh atmosphere, with a whitewash throughout and lots of green friends. The style is predominantly bohemian with touches of Scandinavian and industrial here and there, all focused around a nature vibe.’

Stevie lives in Plymouth with her husband Josh, two young daughters, Ruis-Lu and Indi, and Watson the dog. The family have always lived in Devon and love having the ocean a five-minute drive away, as well as being close to Dartmoor. ‘There’s a perfect balance of beaches and lush green landscape,’ says Stevie. ‘I love those days when I step out of the door and I can smell the sea.’

Before this house, and before they had children, Stevie and Josh were renting a big, bright, Victorian one-bedroom ground floor flat - a place Stevie loved. But the couple soon needed more space, which led to them moving out in 2016 and renting their current house, handily owned by Josh’s uncle. A touch of serendipity, as Stevie says it was proving very difficult for them to find somewhere that allowed pets, especially a dog as big as Watson!

A FRESH NEW LOOK The house had been painted a rainbow of colours throughout; blue, purple, brown, cream, plus various patterned wallpapers. ‘The first thing we did was strip the wallpaper and paint it white throughout,’ says Stevie.

‘The house is quite small, so I really wanted that whitewash to let the light bounce around and make it feel bigger and fresh.’

This involved painting every single room, apart from the bathroom and kitchen. The most recent change has been pulling up the carpet in the bedroom to expose the floorboards, which are now also painted white.

She continues, ‘If I had it my way, I would be knocking down walls and gutting out the kitchen and bathroom for a completely fresh start, with open shelving and stone basins. But, I save those dreams for our forever home, which we are currently saving for.’

Renting can be a challenge creatively, but smart styling and upcycling by Stevie has gently but powerfully stamped the family’s identity throughout. Her aesthetic infuses each room with life. ‘Almost everything we own is secondhand; from car boot sales, charity shops and Gumtree. These are the places we go shopping, not the high street!’ she says. ‘Although, I do love TK Maxx for their range of rugs and plant pots.’ She loves painting patterns onto furniture to upcycle them. ‘I think we only have one piece of furniture that is untouched in the house, the rest have been blessed with a paintbrush!’
