DEAR REA DERS It’s been two years since I made the decision to move 91 Magazine from online only to print, and around seven years since the seed of an idea for it was planted. Over the years, that tiny seed has grown, slowly but surely, and bloomed into something I am immensely proud of. In this issue, our columnist Meredith Crawford talks of how creative careers should be allowed to bloom and grow without fear of judgement or pressure from others. Today, more than ever, the opportunities to carve your own creative path are there for the taking, all we need do is tend and nurture those fledging ideas as they emerge. In celebration of this, we have scattered this issue with petals: from our favourite florists and floral instagrammers to ideas for crafting and cooking for with blooms. Amongst this, as always, we visit the homes and workplaces of a wonderful array of talented folk who have cultivated their creativity through their career paths and the inspiring spaces they inhabit. Thanks goes to Dear To Me Studio (deartomestudio.com) who gifted the first 200 people who pre-ordered the magazine with a beautiful floral greetings card. If you received one, we hope you will use it to send a hand-written message to someone you believe should allow their creative goals to flourish – perhaps that will be all they need to take that leap! Don’t forget to share your pics of the magazine using our hashtag #my91magazine – seeing our readers enjoying the magazine really is what it is all about! Caroline x

Julia Grant STUDIO TOUR Tucked away in a builder’s yard in Chichester, Julia Grant’s mid-century inspired studio doubles up as a shop for her interiors business, Winter’s Moon Words by Hannah Clugston Photos: Georgia Gold

9 1 M AG A Z I N E

15

The thing about Julia Grant is that she is a people person. You can’t refer to the studio that houses her business, Winter’s Moon, without referring to the fact it is often open to the public as a shop. And you can’t talk about her stunning collection of interior products without mentioning the many collaborators she has worked with. She even rents out part of her studio to a textile artist to combat isolation and uses the invitational Instagram hashtag #comesayhello.

O PEN S T U DI O Community has been the deciding factor for Julia’s studio since day one, shunning isolated picturesque spots in the countryside for a less conventional space in a builder’s yard beside a busy road in Chichester. ‘Part of the reason I thought it was a good opportunity is that I am on the ring road,’ Julia explains. ‘I have a little sign that I put out that says “Open, come say hello”, so people that know me know they can pop in, and it’s also an invitation for people that don’t know me to be a bit curious.’ Hortons Yard also has plenty of history of its own; David Horton & Sons, a local building firm, were responsible for constructing much of the 50’s post-war housing in the area. Julia’s studio now sits nestled amongst building paraphernalia, a mechanics workshop and a storage space for someone who buys up bankruptcy stock. ‘It’s not really the designer/maker hub that I would like,’ Julia laughs. ‘But, I fight my little corner!’ It was the traditional Crittall windows, availability of sunlight and large open space that got Julia to sign on the dotted line in the end. Having a builder on hand also has its benefits, and there have been numerous improvements to the studio including the installation of a wood burner and the replacement of a roller door with traditional wooden garage doors. It is through these bright blue painted doors that one will find Julia selling her range of vintage and contemporary pieces, some of which are designed and commissioned by Julia herself.

Midgley Green Katherine Midgley and Seamus Green have created an enriching shopping experience at their contemporary craft shop in Clevedon, Somerset with a mix of traditional and modern aesthetics

Words: Helen Martin Photography: Kym Grimshaw

The experience feels all-encompassing when you walk into Midgley Green; from the scent of the soaps and candles, to the light illuminating the embroidered textiles, potteries and baskets. Is this what you wanted to achieve as shopkeepers? SEAMUS: It’s so important. The shops we remember are those with smell, textures and colours. It’s being creative. I think people thought we were a bit mad when we were doing it up because every detail needed to be perfect in our minds. I don’t think they understood that to open a bricks-and-mortar shop now you must go above and beyond. You can’t just open the door. We also really like the interaction having a shop brings us- we are quite old fashioned, I suppose. If someone walks in we give them a lovely greeting and have a good chat with them, and that way of doing business really suits us. For some, I feel like we are introducing them to the world of British makers. We’re always arranging the shop, our [perfectly matching red-headed] 18-month-old shop dog, Bailey, often by our side. You are both artists, something you can definitely sense through your curation, interior styling and Instagram. Tell us about your journey, from beginning university in Cornwall in 2008, where you both studied fine art, to now. SEAMUS: We’ve always worked together. We met in our first year at Falmouth University, and with our workspaces side by side, we were always bouncing ideas off each other. After we completed our fine art degrees, we had a studio and exhibitions in Cornwall, but couldn’t see the next step. We decided to take a break and moved first to Portishead, our thoughts being that our own practices were coming to an end, for the moment anyway. However, we wanted to be creative and we’d met some interesting people, so we started curating work for them. KATHERINE: During this time, we also began managing The Ethicurean in Wrington, which became our jobs for four and a half years. We opened our online shop Midgley Green in 2015, focusing on the ethos we’re passionate about: British makers creating functional and beautiful products. This meant there was a two year crossover with the restaurant and the online business. We had no time off, but it was great because The Ethicurean was being led by four young and highly creative owners and we learnt a huge amount. It wasn’t ours, though, and we always knew we wanted to work for ourselves.

9 1 M AG A Z I N E

What prompted the leap to opening the physical shop and how did you find the premises? SEAMUS: We live close by- around 10 minutes away- and although we were thinking about our own premises, we weren’t seriously or actively looking for anything. When number 26 became available we viewed it as an empty unit, and we could see the beautiful floor, cornicing – everything. The well-crafted details perfectly paralleled our business. KATHERINE: It was actually quite a scary moment, because we were still at The Ethicurean. We had to decide: could we give all of that up and actually do this? We opened on the 22nd of March 2017 and strangely, just like when we launched online, the first thing to sell was a cheese knife! How has it gone so far? KATHERINE: Happily, we’ve discovered that this part of Clevedon, which is full of independents, is the right place for us. People are coming in, spending and investing. Some have even taken detours to specifically visit us through discovering us on Instagram. SEAMUS: By starting online, then opening a shop with relatively low rent, it’s actually been a very reasonable and manageable way to start a business for us. Could you tell us about a few of your favourite makers? SEAMUS: Gosh, so many. Jacob Bodilly, a potter based just outside Wellington, Somerset. What I love about his work is he’s just so invested in British studio pottery and is interested in this long line of what’s gone before him, and his work reflects how he’s taking it into the future. We’ve helped each other; Jacob’s producing his beautiful work, while we are providing a platform, selling and repeatedly returning with more orders. We also both love Bonfield Block Printers based in Dorset, because we love stomping about in the countryside and they incorporate rural folklore into their work. They’re interested in old stories from country life, traditions of hedge-laying and charcoal burning. Also, Temper Studio, who we found in Wiltshire and design architecturally influenced furniture and homeware. We have worked with them collaboratively from the very beginning. People become our friends and that’s how we like it. FOR FULL FEATURE, PLEASE PURCHASE OUR FULL PRINT OR DIGITAL EDITION VIA WWW.91MAGAZINE.CO.UK AVAILABLE FROM 6TH APRIL 2018.

Carine Giraud Home Tour Sentimental vintage meets colourful contemporary in the home of online shop owner Carine Giraud

Words: Caroline Rowland Photography: Jemma Watts

Lured from the busier left bank in the city of Bordeaux to the quieter, more edgy right bank of the river Garonne, Carine Giraud, her husband Florian and four-year-old son Charlie now reside in La Bastide – a neighbourhood currently undergoing extensive regeneration. The future planned for this area is based on the development of a ground-breaking eco-neighbourhood, spanning out from the existing Darwin Eco-Systeme - a former military barracks - which now houses co-working spaces, a skateboard park, an organic supermarket, a trendy café/bar and an urban farm.

BUILDING THE FUTURE The Darwin had significant appeal to Florian, a keen skateboarder, while the Jardin Botanique and great views of the city sealed the deal for Carine, but while the location was perfect, they did have to compromise on the style of house. Their preference is for older properties with period detail, but their current home was built in the 1990s. Despite this, it hasn’t deterred the couple from creating a charming family home since moving in in August 2017, and Carine admits that she loves the larger rooms a more modern home provides. In the brief time since moving in, Carine and Florian have used their creativity to add colour, fun and unexpected details to the space. Initially the kitchen was nothing more than a sink, but the couple has since hand-built cupboards and shelving, painting them in cheery pink, yellow and white. They then added free-standing furniture and appliances, such as their second-hand pink Smeg fridge, a vintage cupboard and a wall mounted storage system by Dutch brand Tolhuijs. ‘I love to spend time in the kitchen - it’s simple and clean and looks out onto our little garden,’ says Carine. ‘I often change things around and create little vignettes with vintage finds and plants, and the bright colours make me happy.’ The vintage spice drawers are a favourite of Carine’s, which she discovered in an antique shop in Switzerland. ‘I was tempted to paint them at first, but instead decided to leave them as I loved the patina they had acquired.’
