Promoting education is one of the core values of the Zeiterion (The Z) and an integral part of our mission. At the heart of our commitments lies the belief that learning in and through the arts can serve as a powerful tool for student achievement in the classroom and in life. This season offers a wide range of opportunities for both students and teachers to explore the arts through performances, workshops, and residencies. Education in the arts plays a central role in the development of a child; connecting them more deeply to the world and opening them to new ways of seeing it! Not only do Schooltime performances enable students to explore concepts and themes they’re studying in their classroom but they also provide an alternative pathway to learning, foster empathy and understanding, boost critical thinking skills and spark meaningful discourse. Further, access to our performances can improve vocabulary and reading comprehension, nurture cultural awareness, and develop appreciation for the power of the imagination.

ABOUT THE SCHOOLTIME PERFORMANCE SERIES The Z’s Schooltime Performance Series features performances by some of the world’s most respected and famed theatrical, dance and musical companies. These engaging CURRICULUM-BASED PERFORMANCES are designed for students in grades K-12 and incorporate an array of subjects, themes, topics and issues of relevance; reaching nearly 20,000 students and teachers each year! Shows occur during regular school hours and provide engaging learning experiences that enhance students’ knowledge of the content, create meaningful connections and foster their appreciation of the performing arts. The diversity of programs deepen, strengthen and develop children’s curiosity and creativity as well as nurture a better understanding of self, community and the world. Productions are typically between 60 and 90 minutes in length. Each performance includes a TEACHER RESOURCE GUIDE which is helpful in preparing students for an enjoyable and educational theatre experience. Included you’ll find discussion topics, resource materials, and classroom activities that extend the impact of the performance and promote learning across the curriculum. These guides can be downloaded from our website, www.zeiterion.org/schooltime-series. In conjunction with these performances, The Z often offers WORKSHOPS and IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCIES as well as POST-SHOW DISCUSSIONS with the artists and companies. Designed to enrich and deepen your students’ experience with the arts, these opportunities also excite and engage participants in the subject matter, provide greater insight, understanding, and interpretation of the content, and enhance their overall theatre experience.

OTHER Z EDUCATION INITIATIVES

TEEN AMBASSADOR PROGRAM Encourage your students to join our Teen Ambassador Program! Open to students age 13-18. This FREE leadership program is ideal for students with an interest in the performing arts as well as those interested in writing! In the course of a school-year, students attend 6-8 mainstage performances, write reviews, attend workshops and masterclasses and complete community service hours. Applications due October 1.

PAGE TO STAGE ARTS INTEGRATION PROGRAM

The Z’s Creative Classroom offers courses in the performing arts to learners of all ages and abilities in a variety of mediums.

Page to Stage is an authentic arts integration initiative, where students engage in a creative process connecting theatre and ELA while meeting evolving objectives in both. Throughout the program, students explore theatre fundamentals such as acting and characterization through the lens of a novel supporting their curriculum. A final script writing project and performance promotes group work, creativity, and critical thinking. Students attend a live performance of the novel at The Z at the conclusion of the project.

The application for LCC grants opens Sept 1st and the deadline to submit is October 15. The Z highly encourages teachers to take advantage of this opportunity!

The Z offers need-based scholarships to students and schools facing financial hardships. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis so long as funds are available.

50 States in 60 Minutes A GreatWorks Theatre production Hold on to your hats for a breakneck tour of 500 years of American history in this fast, funny – and informative – tour de farce!

Call of the Wild

A Theatre Heroes Production Jack London’s classic tale comes to life on stage. This multi-media adventure mixes performance and storytelling with projected illustrations to tell the story of Buck, the magnificent offspring of a St. Bernard and Scottish Collie.

The production uses 180-degree projection that surrounds the performer and provides scenic, artistic, and historical context to the show through their content. The images feature a unique mix of Philip R. Goodwin’s classical illustrations from the book’s first edition, period photographs, and brand new drawings and animations created by artist Michael Rae.

Layer the Walls What if you discovered an old apartment covered with forty layers of wallpaper? What if these layers could be peeled back to reveal the stories of past tenants? Layer the Walls explores stories of a tenement apartment in New York City that was once home to hundreds of new immigrants. We Shall Overcome A Celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr Inspired by the words and actions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., We Shall Overcome showcases the repertoire of the African American music traditions that electrified generations of civil rights activists and defenders as it is interwoven with spoken word from Dr. King’s recorded speeches. This production ties together a living lineage of music and culture that includes traditional and modern gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway standards, and spirituals. County of Kings A Literature to Life production County of Kings is a tough, yet poignant biographical account of a good kid growing up in an unforgiving environment. Adapted from the extraordinary life of slam poet, playwright, and speaker, Lemon Andersen, this riveting on-stage memoir will resonate with young audiences long after they leave the theatre. Lemon, whose parents met at a methadone clinic and died from AIDS, served two prison sentences before he was 21 and won a Tony Award before he turned 30. Weaving hard-edged drama with urban poetry, County of Kings is a coming-of-age story told with profound honesty, compassion and humor.

Jessie is the daughter of a Political columnist from Tennessee, growing up in Washington, DC, during the early 1900s with dreams of being as important to her father as her younger brother is. When her Great-Aunt Charlotte, a longtime suffragist, comes to Washington, she introduces Jessie to the movement. Jessie begins to learn about the history of the women who started the movement, such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the new generation who have continued the fight, like Alice Paul and Lucy Burns--and those who oppose it, including her own parents. Despite their objections, Jessie soon becomes deeply involved in the Women’s Suffrage movement, comparing their fight for democracy to the one her brother Will stands for when he goes overseas as a soldier in World War I. As tragedy strikes both at home and abroad, and the battle for the vote continues to escalate, everyone in Jessie's family must face their own decisions about what they believe is right and the actions they are willing to take on this pivotal issue. A GreatWorks Theatre production When the Nazis invaded Denmark in the 1940s, Jewish families were generally left alone, unlike other parts of Western Europe. But all of that changed suddenly in 1943, and when the call went out to round up Denmark's Jewish families, thousands of non-Jewish Danes worked together to smuggle their Jewish friends and neighbors across the water to neutral Sweden, and safety.

That true series of events forms the basis of Number the Stars, Lois Lowry's popular book for middle-school readers. Annemarie Johannsen's family lives in Copenhagen, downstairs from her best friend, Ellen Rosen. But before they get that far, Annemarie will have to step into the fray, and put her own life at risk for the sake of saving her friend.

Doktor Kaboom has built a great big spinning wheel and labeled it with everything from optical illusions to chemical reactions to a homemade hovercraft and more! At least a dozen fantastic demonstrations ready to go. Wherever the wheel stops, that’s what’s next! Will we turn a water bottle into a rocket or catapult bananas across the stage? Miss Nelson Has a Field Day A Dallas Children’s Theatre production Return to Horace B. Smedley School where the Smedley Tornadoes have never won a football game. In fact, they have never even scored a single point! With such a poor record and a team that is out of control, kind-hearted Miss Nelson comes to the rescue when she enlists the help of her alter ego, the ill-tempered Miss Viola Swamp, to coach the team and whip them into shape. Considered by all to be “the meanest substitute teacher in the whole world,” Coach Swamp applies her trademark discipline to the players’ training, demanding tough exercises and no back talk. In the end, the team changes their attitude, pulls together, sharpens their skills, and manages to win the biggest game of the year.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long are the performances? Performances are approximately 60 minutes, unless otherwise noted.

How much are tickets? When should we book? Our shows are extremely popular. Please make your request early to avoid disappointment. Once a performance has been selected and confirmed by The Z, make sure the date is on your schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s master calendar. Our reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may be difficult to reschedule if a conflict develops.

Who do we call with a performance or booking question? Contact our Education Department by calling 508-997-5664 x129 Monday-Friday between 9AM and 5PM.

Who/What is the School Representative? The SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVE is the point person for the field trip. This person is responsible for distributing important information to other teachers attending the trip as well as notifying The Z of any changes to the reservation.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the performance?

Performance prices range from $8 to $12 each. See ticket request form for specific prices. With every 10 tickets purchased, you receive 1 free adult/chaperone ticket. Additional chaperones and parents are welcome to attend the performances at the published ticket price.

How do I prepare my students for the performance? Prepare your students for their theatre experience with a pre-performance lesson! Check out our Teacher Resource Guides for ideas, lesson plans, background information and more! Resource Guides are available at www.zeiterion.org/schooltime-series. Also consider reviewing proper theatre etiquette and behavior with your class, see page 13.

How do we arrange for special assistance?

When do we pay? Invoices are mailed upon receipt of your request form. Payment (or purchase order) is due 30 days prior to the performance. If neither payment nor a purchase order is received at least 30 days prior to the performance your seats may be released to the next school on the waiting list.

The Z will gladly make the necessary arrangements and accommodations but can only do so with sufficient notice. Please notify us at the time of booking if anyone needs accessible seating or assistance (wheelchair, hearingimpaired, etc.).

What are the cancellation policies? All cancellations must be made in writing 60 DAYS PRIOR TO THE PERFORMANCE. No refund will be issued if your order is not cancelled within the 60 day time frame. Cancellations by The Z rarely occur, but if they do, you will receive a full refund.

The Z is contractually obligated to pay artists regardless of weather conditions. If your school is cancelled due to bad weather, The Z cannot refund your payment, but with your written request, we will try to accommodate your group at another performance.

Our shows book quickly! We strongly encourage you to order in advance to avoid disappointment!

Complete the request form found on page 15 or 1 online at www.zeiterion.org/schooltime-series. It is important that all sections of this form are completed. Of special importance are the school representative’s email address, an evening or weekend phone number, and your principal’s signature.

Estimate your group’s numbers as closely as 2 possible. (within 10% of final number)

Plan on one complimentary chaperone ticket for each 10 paid student tickets.

4 Final payment is due 30 days prior to performance.

ADJUSTING YOUR RESERVATION Notification of changes in attendance numbers must be made IN WRITING 60 days prior to the performance. Changes within 60 days of the performance are permitted, however, your original number of tickets ordered can only be reduced by 10% within this time frame. Changes increasing the original number of seats are welcome but subject to availability. All changes MUST be made 72 hours prior to the performance.

We accept school checks, VISA, MasterCard, AMEX or Discover. If payment or purchase order is not received by due date, unpaid seats may be released for other schools to purchase. Day-of or post-performance payments are not permitted.

THEATRE BEHAVIOR

Here’s how students can help:

The Z realizes that attending a Schooltime performance may be the first introduction to attending a live performance for many students. A live theatrical production is exciting and vibrant. The actors, the audience, and the backstage personnel are all part of the experience. Your students, as part of the audience, play an important role in the atmosphere of the production. Please remind your class that everyone will have a wonderful time by remembering their theatre etiquette.

It is important to remain seated throughout the entire performance. Restroom visits are best made before the show begins.

Lights Out = Quiet Time. When the lights in the theatre dim to blackout, this is a signal that the show is about to begin. Please make sure to settle down and get ready for the performance.

Cell Phones and other electronic devices are prohibited. Noises from electronic devices are highly distracting to the performers so please make sure they are turned off.

Give your full attention and energy to the performers. In return, the performers give it back to you with a better performance.

Don’t talk or whisper during the show unless you are asked. It can be disruptive to the performers.

Show the performers your appreciation for their efforts! When there are parts that you particularly enjoy, you should feel free to laugh and clap.
