HISTORY OF THE Z

O

ver the last 95 years, the Zeiterion Theatre has been a much-beloved place in New Bedford’s history. In 1923, the Zeitz brothers opened the Zeiterion as a grand Vaudeville house, with the vision of creating a “palace for the people.” At the time, the Zeiterion was one of nearly twenty theatres operating in the city of New Bedford. Shortly after opening, it transitioned to a movie house, and was renamed “The State Theatre.” Countless memories were made as the theatre hosted opening nights for films such as “Moby Dick” and “Down to the Sea in Ships.” As time passed and people began seeking their entertainment elsewhere, the theatre fell dark and faced an uncertain future. Thanks to some visionary leaders, organizations like WHALE, and the support of this community, the Zeiterion was saved from the wrecking ball. In 1982, the Zeiterion Theatre was restored and reborn as a nonprofit performing arts center, fondly called “The Z.” Today, The Z is a thriving home for live music, dance, theatre, and film. It is a beacon for some of the best and brightest artists from around the world, exposing audiences of all ages to the power of the performing arts. Once one of many, The Z is now the last operating theatre serving the city and a treasured landmark in downtown New Bedford. With the continued support of the community, The Z will remain at the center of cultural activity, entertaining and inspiring audiences for generations to come.

Thank you for being a part of The Z’s story.

OCTOBER 23 The group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy! No matter who or what is in the headlines, you can bet The Capitol Steps will tackle both sides of the political spectrum and all things equally foolish. What started out as a group of Senate staffers set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them has turned into a wildly successful comedy troop who have recorded more than 35 albums. They dig into current headlines, creating song parodies and skits that convey a special brand of satirical humor as popular in Peoria as it is on Pennsylvania Avenue. ZEITERION.ORG // 508-994-2900

THE Z PRESENTS SILENT MOVIE WITH LIVE SOUNDTRACK FROM THE Z’S MIGHTY WURLITZER ORGAN

GENEROUSLY SPONSORED BY EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN THEATER ORGAN SOCIETY

SATURDAY, 4PM

OCTOBER 27 The milestone film comes alive with a live soundtrack from organist Bernie Anderson and The Z’s Mighty Wurlitzer Organ! Known for its expressionistic sets and techniques, the 1920 film tells the strange tale of a sleepwalker under the spell of the mysterious and evil Dr. Caligari. As the demented hypnotist and his ghastly henchman spread death throughout the German countryside, an evocative score underpins the heart of this classic silent film. ZEITERION.ORG // 508-994-2900

DOO WOP XVII: BROTHERS IN HARMONY SATURDAY, 7:30PM

APRIL 27 Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Charlie Thomas and his Drifters (“Under The Boardwalk,” “Save The Last Dance For Me,” “Up On The Roof”) return after a five-year absence to headline Todd Baptista’s annual trip back to the first generation of rock’n’roll and doo wop! The three-hour extravaganza will also include first-time visitors Jimmy Gallagher and the Passions (“Just To Be With You,” “I Only Want You”), the original Tymes (“So Much In Love,” “Wonderful, Wonderful”), and the group behind Dion’s classic hits, Stan Zizka’s Del Satins (“Teardrops Follow Me,” “Runaround Sue,” “The Wanderer”). The evening, hosted and co-produced by Baptista, wouldn’t be complete without Jack Colombo’s Coast To Coast Band. Sing along and reminisce during an unforgettable trip down memory lane! GIRLS, GUNS & GLORY THURSDAY, 7:30PM

MAY 2 Their love for early rock ’n’ roll, true country, raw blues and pretty much any kind of authentic American music branded Girls, Guns & Glory quickly as anomalous – and electrifying! They’ve barnstormed far beyond their Boston hometown, playing honky-tonks, beer joints and concert venues throughout the U.S., amassing a loyal legion of fans along the way. The media have noticed too, including Rolling Stone, which heralds them as a “modern-day Buddy Holly plus Dwight Yoakam divided by the Mavericks.”

DAVID DORFMAN DANCE AROUNDTOWN

SATURDAY, 8PM

MAY 11 Aroundtown is a kinetic poem that examines the varied, unique and sometimes divided notions of love – its meaning, purpose, and platform. With original music, text, and visuals, the work explores commitment, community, and intimacy in times of violence and strife. David Dorfman Dance’s trademark empathy, sly humor, and bombastic physicality are harnessed in this look at love as both sociopolitical and intimate weather systems in a delightfully moving performance.
