FOR YOU, IT’S ABOUT WHO IS ON STAGE. FOR US, IT’S ABOUT WHO IS IN THE SEATS. THE Z – 684 PURCHASE ST. NEW BEDFORD, MA
FROM THE MAYOR
CITY OF NEW BEDFORD JONATHAN F. MITCHELL, MAYOR
Welcome to the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center, one of the premiere performance venues in New England. The cover of your program book proclaims, “You are here!” and indeed you are in a special place. This beautiful historic theater has been the setting of wondrous, thrilling, and illuminating moments over the decades, right here in New Bedford, one of the most historically and culturally rich cities in the U.S. From our dominant historical roles in whaling, abolitionism, and textiles, to our current status as the top commercial fishing port in America, there is truly no place like it anywhere. New Bedford is home to a vibrant arts and culture scene, a national park, a preeminent arts college, a world famous Whaling Museum, and numerous galleries, shops, and restaurants. It’s no wonder that the Atlantic Monthly named New Bedford one of the “most artistic” cities in America. The Z is at the center of it all. Here, visitors can experience the unique arts, history, and culture that New Bedford residents enjoy year-round. This season promises a wide variety of performances by world-class artists, entertainers, and story tellers. We are pleased that you are here, and we know you will be, too. Sincerely,
Jon Mitchell

2017 PERFORMANCES FOR STUDENTS
DEAR EDUCATOR,
H
ave you considered attending a SchoolTime Performance at The Z lately? We’ve lined up nationally recognized artists who provide an engaging learning experience your students won’t forget. Performances such as “Through the Eyes of a Friend: The Anne Frank Story” and “Rock the Presidents” tie into core subjects such as History, Social Science, and Civics and Government, and “Lights! Camera! Math!” and “Engineering Rules! With Arc Attack” tap into the STEM fields. By providing your students with memorable time out of the classroom, you enhance your students’ knowledge of core subject areas, build their learning skills, and unlock their creative thinking. The Z provides curriculum guides to help prepare students for their educational theatre experience. Plus, we offer pre- and post-show discussions with the artists and in-school workshops and residencies to offer a deeper insight into the material introduced in the performances. Whatever subject or age group you teach, The Z has you covered! Hope to see you and your class at The Z, Leann Heath Education and Community Engagement Manager

HISTORY OF ZEITERION THEATER
O
n April 2, 1923, New Bedford opened its last new theatre in the city’s downtown area – THE ZEITERION. Built for the “live performance of vaudeville”, it opened with “Troubles of 1922” starring and written by George Jessel. Barney Zeitz and his brothers built the $800,000 Zeiterion with the intention it be the biggest and best theatre in New Bedford. The two story tapestry brick building, designed by Frank Leary and Frank Walker, is an adaption of the Georgian Revival style. Inside, the decorative shield with the family’s “Z” logo and marble columned walls dominated the lobby. The Morning Mercury described the auditorium as “Impressive in its beauty.” The color scheme was ivory and old rose; silk tapestry on the walls, a frieze of gold leaf Grecian dancing figures; a large oval sunset scene on the ceiling, an orchestra rail of solid gum wood, and a $7,000 cut glass Czechoslovakian chandelier. The theatre did not meet with immediate success and by September 1923 it had closed briefly and reopened that month as the STATE, a silent movie house. Its first film was the New England premiere of D. W. Griffith’s, “The White Rose”. From this point on the STATE would feature only occasional live performances. Five world premieres were held at the STATE. The most important premiere was the 1956 opening of “Moby Dick” complete with Gregory Peck in attendance, a Time magazine souvenir issue and a white whale that terrified audiences everywhere. The STATE was modernized in 1971. Marble walls were covered with wood paneling, chandeliers in the lobby were removed, contemporary rocking seats replaced original leather and black paint replaced ivory and old rose. On December 31, 1981, the Penler Brothers of Paragon Travel donated the theatre portion of the building to the Waterfront Historic Area League (WHALE) who provided $200,000 for the first phase of restoration and commissioned a feasibility study. Once one of 17 operating theatres in New Bedford, the Zeiterion has been restored to its original grandeur. It is reborn as the symbol of an age when theatres were truly palaces for the people. The ZEITERION held it’s gala-reopening on September 25, 1982 starring Shirley Jones in Concert. To become eligible for major state funding for restoration, WHALE transferred title of the theatre to the City of New Bedford. The building is now managed and maintained by The Zeiterion Theatre, Inc. 32

Dear Zeiterion audience, My first theatre experience was in one of these very seats as a child. In 7th grade after reading the classic novel, my class took us to a production of A Christmas Carol. I remember the rich smell of the theatre, the gorgeous chandelier, and the ultimate beauty of the architecture. A s I waited for the curtain to rise, I recall trying to count the figures that dance along the ceiling… That day forever created an intense appreciation of art and theatre that I carry to this day. Art plays an immense importance in our community and culture. As a Z member and REALTOR ® here in the South Coast, I am always delighted to see the benefit this institution plays in our community. The Zeiterion holds a special place in my heart.

BOB WOODWARD SATURDAY, 8PM
APRIL 1
No journalist or author has uncovered more secrets or probed deeper into the modern American presidency and Washington than Bob Woodward. Over the years the power of the executive branch has morphed and broadened. How has it changed – and how is it likely to change during the next administration? Woodward will bring a wealth of experience and insight on the topic and will speak exactly 70 days into the administration of our next president. With riveting storytelling, there can be no better guide as he pulls back the curtain and takes audiences on a behind-the-scenes, intimate tour of political power and the often hidden motives of key players. His appearance marks the revivification of the New Bedford Lyceum, a centuries-old New England tradition of learning through intellectual debate.
