Above

Above the city

In the narrow and congested roads, when can there be a space for pedestrians and bicycles to walk freely? In the theory of futuristim architecture, architects think about multi-story building connection passages, so that cars can shuttle in the second layer of the city, to increase the vertical usability of a city. However, if there is a layered city that belongs to pedestrians, a pedestrian utopia city, it can meet the needs of our lives effortlessly at an appropriate time. Let us forget the convenience and economy brought by the car temporarily, and "walk" out of our perspective of the city. And what would it be like to experience a completely different urban experience in such a layered city?

I took the area from Ximen MRT Station to Huanhe South Road in Taipei City as a theoretical experimental base, trying to create a gathering point to continue the original industry in the base. But increase the diversity of the area through the second layer at the same time. Connecting existing and re-created "buildings and activities" nodes through linear "bridges" forms a multi-layered city that is different from today's urban activities, and also allows people to avoid chaotic traffic.

-City operation & Layered city- 01

-The ‘Essence Desire’ of human-

In the book ‘How Cities Work’ by Yoo HyunJoon, there is some theory about the relationship between the city and human essence desire as well as behavior. I choose some of them and then develop the concept of my design.

-Taipei & New Taipei City -15minutes-

According to the 15-minute city recently as a way towards more sustainable, livable, and healthy futures.

-Reason of Connection-

Connect the old buildings in Ximen Area and create new value in the exsisting city.

A performing place sometimes gather people together holding special events. If there’s no events holding, people can still stop here enjoying the different feeling from the city center.

There are many ways to get close to the river, but never try a way to sit beside the river and watch some movies as well as have some beer with friends.

People usally like to gather and stop at the end of the circulation. Besides, be close to the green is something essential for human being.

Children can get to the school by using the bridge whick connect the road near their home.

Entering the school at 2 or 3 floor of the building, create another interesting way to arrive school

I pick these nodes to progress my design to reduce barriers between river and people, extend events of Ximen walking district, re-use the vacancy as well. The yellow areas are the main nodes and most of the activities happened here. And the orange area are secondary nodes, providing people with temporary stops.

The history in Qingtian St.

1922-1930’s University Residential Cultural and Educational District

The Japanese-style wooden houses on Qingtian Street express the "Japanese-style houses in Taiwan" in space, including traditional Japanese style, westernization after the Taisho period, and adaptation changes in Taiwan; it also represents the Japanese in history. Build a house and settle down in Taiwan.

1949-1992 White Terror period

During the persecution of intellectuals, many professors were killed in their homes.

1970s

Taiwan experienced rapid economic growth and rapid urbanization. Most of the shophouses during the Qing Dynasty or the residences during the Japanese occupation period were renovated and developed into concrete buildings.

2002-present

The residents of Qingtian Street organized an activity called "Qingtian Emerald", which was a networking activity to understand the community environment. The informal organization of the community spontaneously started gatherings similar to the work of community literature and history, which gradually raised the residents' sense of community.

-Layers CombinationDecide what will become elements and put them layers and layers to create the abundance of the interface

Different visual and sensory experiences drive people's curiosity about the building. Enter the building from the outdoor corridor and a different interface to experience the visual feast brought by the building. Sliding doors, plants, grilles, moving lines, edges and paper windows, the transparency of different types of interfaces, and the way of interacting with people are not the same, and they can create many hierarchical relationships between buildings and people.

Among the various roofs that are different from traditional forms, the uppermost roof is made of modern metal and wood overlapping each other, creating a very rich light and shadow effect. Under the sloping roof, half is indoor and half is outdoor space, and you can experience the importance of the relationship between the sloping roof and the human scale.

To allow the transparent interface to float, a truss system is used to support and hang. It not only encloses the space but also defines the level. From the outside to inside, they are outdoor, outdoor under truss, semi-outdoor space, semi-outdoor space, or indoor (whether the sliding door is opened or not), and indoor.

The small site model shows the relationship between the building and its surroundings, which is highlighted in the residential area. In order to meet the crowds of different faces, different interfaces are used to face the urban environment.

-Part of the Building-

In this detail drawing, you can see how the space between the interfaces is used. And the essential element of the edge is highlighted on each floor as a significant semi-outdoor space. The circulation can be vertical between each floor.

The Central Courdyard is the most important space in this building, which means the end of every corridor will lead to this courtyard to make people look down at the activities happened in the middle of the architecture.

This is the most important part of the whole building. The space between the interfaces allows people to move horizontally and vertically, superimposing relatively closed and non-closed spaces, and the combination of dynamic and static. Following the ritualistic feeling found in Japanese shrines, the long staircase allows people to enter the most important space.

As I mentioned in the previous research and development, traditional Japanese roofs can be transformed into many different styles and used in architecture. Here it is shown how the activity and transparency of the roof are displayed.

What is Responding Environment? As these work environments became more systemic in nature and architectural services need to be extended beyond the completion of the space, the architect could become a long-term consultant to their client by modifying and transforming the space in response to client needs based on user-generated data. A new architectural business model could emerge with service offerings becoming more sustainable and responsive, generating a new kind of value for the client.

When combining folding cubes, it could only become one demention, so we tried to add cubes to make it in two dementions. It made the folding cube from line to plane. We put folding cubes on different surface of cube could make the plane we want.

-Twisting Degree-

-Logical Thinking-

The amount of folding cubes affect the degree that cubes twist. We decided to combine two folding cubes to be a set, so we could make different combination to control the degree.

The balloons are regarded as the distance while they are inflated in 100% between cubes.

When the whole system is combined with AB, the cubes can only be blowed up horizontally. It can’t be twisted or even make other form in three-dimensional.

We use PVC as the cube. It is flexible but also strong.

By using folding, the cube is set up with the whole rectangle. It would also stronger the cube.

Model testing :

Testing by all kinds of forms and logical rules, making models as well as using computers to simulate are complementary to each other.

The manufacturing process of making such a big model is not that easy, especially when the time was pressed at that time. It makes us can't help but formulate a great plan to stand to.

Final Model testing :

After studying all of the models, we realized the biggest problem of our failure is due to the wrong material. Therefore, we found a material that is available to obtain and light enough to support our study, which is Aluminum foil balloons. The result of using aluminum foil balloons is that the form changing that happens in the environment is more obvious.

Housing?

Living can not just only about living, there are plenty of possibilities that happen in the building, which is why we are researching space. Thanks to the covid-19, people get to have a chance to research the essence of living, work from home is getting more and more popular and has even become the mainstream during a hard time in this pandemic. I made this work before the covid, however, the only thing that didn’t change is that humans are always finding the best way to live.

When it comes to Zhongshan N Rd, due to the frequency of the traffic congestion here, the quality of the environment is not as good as we imagine. Vehicle emissions cause the air pollution in this area.

The host of the Kaira Looro imagine a ‘Children’s House’ as a warm and welcoming place where activities aimed at preventing child malnutrition can be carried out in a rural environment. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow; allowing them to develop properly is essential in order to build a better future. Today, 149 million children in the world suffer from growth retardation resulting from nutritional difficulties caused by poverty, conflicts and the environmental crisis. An adequate diet, especially in the first 5 years of life, means facilitating the psychological and physical development necessary to develop all of the fundamental abilities to participate in social life.

01 02 03 04

We would like to lay special emphasis on that the location we place the building are corresponded to the spirit of the sacred tree locally, though the sacred tree is not the same as the original one. However, we expect the line of sight to have a strong connection with the grove near the position of activities. Not to mention placing a tree in our architecture to extend the green from our site. Additionally, we elongated the main entrance to correspond to the major road which was located at the west of the site. Compare to the solid mass that the frame structure supports individuals increase the range of sight which penetrate the courtyard to see what is happening unconsciously.

To summarize, “playing” is an essential part of this project, which means human behavior and mental health development are surrounded by the core of the concept.

03 04

We believe that the cardinal value of childhood is to “play”. Conceivably, children not only can discover their interests during playtime, but they can also master social skills by meeting friends and encountering interpersonal connection problems. Most importantly, making children capable to think from a creative and unique perspective is undoubtedly beneficial to the process when they are developing their interests. Only when children are interested in the field they plowed in, can they have a high chance to contribute well to society, and this is the main concept that this project wants to display.

To make the space playful and interesting, we consider frame structure as a solution. Compared to solid spaces, a space constructed by modularity frame structure not only offers a transparent view and flexibility of space usage but is also convenient in construction. We decide to separate the interior space to centralize the main playground, so called the cardinal value of this project. Scattering the wood frame to surround three of the interior volumes to expand the sense of playfulness to the entire site.
